A word from The Round Table at the Algonquin Hotel
For 100 years, the Algonquin has been greeting and lodging the country's most prominent writers and literary personalities, as well as the leading figures of the American stage. The hotel is best known, perhaps, for the members of the Round Table, a group of luminaries who had in common both the ability to fire blazing witticisms and to withstand being on the receiving end of them. The tone they set during their daily meetings set the literary style of the 1920s. After World War I, Vanity Fair writers and Algonquin regulars Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley and Robert E. Sherwood began lunching at the Algonquin. Though society columns referred to them as the Algonquin Round Table, they called themselves the Vicious Circle. "By force of character," observed drama critic Brooks Atkinson, "they changed the nature of American comedy and established the tastes of a new period in the arts and theatre."Continued

  • "I came back to the Algonquin after a thirty year absence. The formerly famous Oak Room and Rose Room dining areas no longer exist. The lobby has been merged into one massive space. It has all the ambiance of a grade school cafeteria. That may be because I made the mistake of dining while the pre-theatre crowd was at feeding time. Theatre tourists and their urchins. You could not carry on a civilized conversation above the din. While my friend enjoyed her tenderloin I suffered with the crab cakes. Supposedly "pan-seared" it was oven baked. It was not restaurant made but a pre-formed ball of wispy crab meat. Mrs. Paul makes better crab cakes. I am not sure what the sides were. I could not see them through the darkness. Not finish the meal."

  • "Of course, we went for the literary connections -- and the fun of sitting in the same space as so many brilliant writers (and conversationalists). The food was fairly standard fare, but simple and well-prepared. We went after a Sunday matinee (around 6pm), and had the room mostly to ourselves for an hour or so, which was a plus."

The atmosphere was absolutely beautiful but I think it should be stated on their website that at 1PM on Sunday you can only order off the brunch menu -- I thought, like all other restaurants you could order brunch or lunch but we were informed we could only order from the brunch menu."

  • "We arrived early and the place was empty. Even so, they gave us the worst table in the place located next to the kitchen door. I got the distinct impression, we were treated poorly because we gave them our Groupon voucher when we arrived. From the on, the service was horrible. Fortunately, the food was very good. Over all an unpleasant experience."

  • "When we arrived for our reservation, we couldn't find anyone to help us. Finally, someone did seat us and then left us sitting there for over 15 minutes. I finally had to go to the front desk to get help. The brunch menu was adequate; however, the Chef had change one of the items we ordered and we were not informed of the change until the item was served."

  • "I checked out the menu and history prior to making the reservation, was excited about he history and this 'gem in the city'. Arrived/seated on time. Seated at a tiny wide table between two other couples, felt like I was shouting to my husband over the kitchen clatter. This was a birthday celebration, received nice complimentary champagne when we were finished with our dinner, odd timing, but appreciated all the same."

  • "My husband and I dined at the Algonquin years ago and had an excellent experience. The waiters were attentive and efficient. The food was good. This was not the case with our recent 24th anniversary celebration. We arrived early (5:30 p.m.), as we were going to a play, so the fact that there weren't many people in the restaurant was not surprising. We were pretty much ignored by the waiters and had to flag someone down when we were ready to order or needed anything. There were many people having drinks up front. They must heard about the bad food, which explained the lack of diners. My husband's chicken was not good. I'm a vegetarian, so I had a portobello mushroom, which was cut up and hidden in a mountain of lettuce. "

  • "A Sunday breakfast here was pleasant but not outstanding. The menu is average but ok, the cooking and presentation similar. The service was indifferent, perhaps because we were a group of three mature women. Several times a waiter tried to remove my plate while I was still eating. This makes a customer feel hurried and harassed. It also means the waiter has not noted the position of the fork, prongs down to indicate still in use. The room was nowhere near full so there was no pressure to clear a table. The Round Table Room itself is beautiful and of course full of history. Perhaps the management is trading on this rather than the full customer experience. "

Further the location was idle because my wife is a writer and the people we were meeting were writers as well. With the background of the Round Table the location was perfect. Already by reputation you know that this is where the wickedly witty literati such as Dorothy Parker and the famous Round Table group hung out, so it's not surprise that the decor is reflective of that era. The Restaurant is simply the back portion of this rather exotic lobby/lounge area, quite small and intimate with tables spaced far enough apart that one can actually hear the conversation at one's own table--not easy to find in NYC! Food was well-prepared, nicely presented, tasty, and service was attentive. It made for a lovely evening with dear friends to enjoy good food, good conversation, and lovely ambiance."

  • "Going to the Round Table at the "Gonk" one re-lives the lingering historical whispers from New York's roaring twenties & the "ten year lunch" of the famous round table members. That was enough for me and my group. We ordered from the ala carte menu and the food was excellent. Service was slow, but friendly. The ambience was perfect since they have retained all the charm of the past."

  • "Hotel was excellent; service and quality of rooms. The round table Restaurant was built up to be a real gem but turned out to be very ordinary except for the prices. The Restaurant is really just an extension to the lobby bar; not what we were expecting! We made reservations 2 months ahead of time to ensure a nice family dinner before a Broadway show. The management booked a family reunion of at least 50 folks for the same time which filled the place and the noise level was unbearable. Made for a very uncomfortable experience! Food and drinks were mediocre and far too expensive even for New York City. I was very convenient and probably would have been more enjoyable if the large party had not taken over the place with their reception."

  • "I ordered a salad that had shockingly wilted lettuce. I had to ask for water, 15 minutes after we were seated. The restaurant was empty at lunchtime (not a good sign for a Manhattan restaurant, regardless of the location), and still our waiter was MIA. My date's food was mediocre at best. Way too pricey for what you get. You are paying solely for the ghost of Dorothy Parker, et al, and it aint worth it. "

  • "We arrived before the restaurant opened, and the Host directed us to the beautiful lobby seating where we could get a drink while we passed the time. When our table was ready, we were allowed to pick where we sat, and we were treated very well. The Crab Cakes and the Filet were delicious. The history of this hotel and restaurant are also 'delicious'. Enjoy!"

  • "I went for lunch on Sunday, I was told you only serve brunch. Your website says lunch served daily. I was embarassed because I took a friend for lunch she doesn't eat eggs there was little for her to choose from. The food took a half hour to arrive. I ordered a turkey club with french fries, instead I was served chips. By the time the fries came out I was done with my sandwich."

  • "We had a wonderful experience Tuesday night. Our waiter was attentive, but not overbearing. We weren't rushed. The food, we ordered from the pre-theatre prix fix, was elegant and delicious. Pasta was pleasantly spicy and steak was well seasoned and cooked to my liking, not a fan of the potato pancake though. I t wasn't crowded when we arrived at 5 so we had our choice of table...we picked one right by the 'Round Table" and even got a photo :) We are looking forward to another visit."

  • "I am a native New Yorker, who unfortunately left NY for professional reasons. I made this reservation weeks ago, yet even as a hotel guest, in a relatively empty restaurant, my well dressed party of four was led to a table in the back of the restaurant next to the kitchen door. When I protested, we were moved to another table but the host was decidedly condescending in the process. lackluster service and a de minimus wine list only added to my disappointment. This was my son's 26th birthday celebration. As a writer and a journalist he was really looking forward to dining at the round table. However, while I love the Algonquin and stay whenever I can, I don't think any of us will dine at the round table in the foreseeable future."

  • "We were taken care of well here. Service was a four only because we waited for approx 40-45 mins to place our order. We were visiting during that time so perhaps the waitstaff did not want to rush us, and we did not try to get their attention. Even so, our 5:30 sitting gave us ample time to make our 8:00 showtime. The prix fixe 3-course meal for the pre-theater folks is an exceptional value at $35. Portions were plentiful and of very good quality, and the ambience is simply wonderful. We are going there again today for their Sunday brunch!"

  • "The atmosphere felt like it had been ripped from a movie scene from the 1920's. However the fact that the hotel's check-in encroached upon the tables of diners was annoying. The food overall was okay, but the servings and flavor was not on par with the price. I kept thinking, I need to show them how its done in that kitchen. I am a self taught chef and I was disappointed in just about every meal I had at the Round Table. Even dessert was a bust. I will never dine there again."

  • "The Blue Bar and lounge were wonderful. Staff was excellent - but the good, while good, was uninspired. What do you do with an icon? Maybe make The round table into a degustation table and refresh the menu so that it draws people. We were one of only 3 tables on a Thursday night. The Blur Bar was SRO and the lounge was decently full. So why is the restaurant so empty? Good meal but boring."
