A word from The Round Table at the Algonquin Hotel
For 100 years, the Algonquin has been greeting and lodging the country's most prominent writers and literary personalities, as well as the leading figures of the American stage. The hotel is best known, perhaps, for the members of the Round Table, a group of luminaries who had in common both the ability to fire blazing witticisms and to withstand being on the receiving end of them. The tone they set during their daily meetings set the literary style of the 1920s. After World War I, Vanity Fair writers and Algonquin regulars Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley and Robert E. Sherwood began lunching at the Algonquin. Though society columns referred to them as the Algonquin Round Table, they called themselves the Vicious Circle. "By force of character," observed drama critic Brooks Atkinson, "they changed the nature of American comedy and established the tastes of a new period in the arts and theatre."Continued

  • "When commercial property builders purchase a NYC landmark what you end up with is an entity that aspires to offer as little as possible in terms of service and attention in pursuit of whatever revenue they can squeeze out of an admired institution. The staff hates the owners (as I was told), and the owners could care less. Hoards of unsuspecting tourists parade through their front doors expecting a mythic experience only to realize they've been had and that they would have been better off staying at the airport and saving their hard earned dollars. It's just so cynically sad. My advice? Do your homework, eat and stay somewhere else, and when you're in midtown, drop in, look around, and use their bathrooms. Cornerstone Realty deserves it."

  • "I went for lunch on Sunday, I was told you only serve brunch. Your website says lunch served daily. I was embarassed because I took a friend for lunch she doesn't eat eggs there was little for her to choose from. The food took a half hour to arrive. I ordered a turkey club with french fries, instead I was served chips. By the time the fries came out I was done with my sandwich."

  • "We had a wonderful experience Tuesday night. Our waiter was attentive, but not overbearing. We weren't rushed. The food, we ordered from the pre-theatre prix fix, was elegant and delicious. Pasta was pleasantly spicy and steak was well seasoned and cooked to my liking, not a fan of the potato pancake though. I t wasn't crowded when we arrived at 5 so we had our choice of table...we picked one right by the 'Round Table" and even got a photo :) We are looking forward to another visit."

  • "The atmosphere felt like it had been ripped from a movie scene from the 1920's. However the fact that the hotel's check-in encroached upon the tables of diners was annoying. The food overall was okay, but the servings and flavor was not on par with the price. I kept thinking, I need to show them how its done in that kitchen. I am a self taught chef and I was disappointed in just about every meal I had at the Round Table. Even dessert was a bust. I will never dine there again."

  • "The Blue Bar and lounge were wonderful. Staff was excellent - but the good, while good, was uninspired. What do you do with an icon? Maybe make The round table into a degustation table and refresh the menu so that it draws people. We were one of only 3 tables on a Thursday night. The Blur Bar was SRO and the lounge was decently full. So why is the restaurant so empty? Good meal but boring."

  • "I am a native New Yorker, who unfortunately left NY for professional reasons. I made this reservation weeks ago, yet even as a hotel guest, in a relatively empty restaurant, my well dressed party of four was led to a table in the back of the restaurant next to the kitchen door. When I protested, we were moved to another table but the host was decidedly condescending in the process. lackluster service and a de minimus wine list only added to my disappointment. This was my son's 26th birthday celebration. As a writer and a journalist he was really looking forward to dining at the round table. However, while I love the Algonquin and stay whenever I can, I don't think any of us will dine at the round table in the foreseeable future."

  • "We were taken care of well here. Service was a four only because we waited for approx 40-45 mins to place our order. We were visiting during that time so perhaps the waitstaff did not want to rush us, and we did not try to get their attention. Even so, our 5:30 sitting gave us ample time to make our 8:00 showtime. The prix fixe 3-course meal for the pre-theater folks is an exceptional value at $35. Portions were plentiful and of very good quality, and the ambience is simply wonderful. We are going there again today for their Sunday brunch!"

  • "We had a travel zoo voucher for lunch which is one of the main reasons for trying The Round Table. We showed up an hour before our reservation, and there was plenty of seating so they accommodated us by seating us at a nice quiet table of our choice. We had a glass of wine which they let us taste first to see if we liked it before ordering it which was excellent. My girlfriend had the crab cake, lobster mashed potatoes, and grilled asparagus. Crab cake and lobster mashed potatoes were both excellent, but the grilled asparagus was not the best. I had parmesan crusted chicken with potatoes, and artichokes hearts. It was very good. Overall, we enjoyed our lunch and would go back again. With a voucher though. A little expensive without one."

My husband had the steak with spinach - it was perfect. The servings were generous and very filling, so we ended with cappucino. The service was attentive and courteous even if we did not buy any drinks."

  • "I wanted to find a good and quiet place for a great brunch that wasn't too far from Grand Central. I've been in the bar many times and good experiences but brunch was miserable. The restaurant was empty when we arrived at noon and although there were several waiters milling around - none could be bothered to seat us and, after asking several times, one of the waiters rudely suggested we just pick a table and sit down. It just went downhill from there. It took forever to get menus, more than 20 minutes to get coffee when the food showed up, 45 MINUTES LATER, it was just okay - and very, very expensive - $132! We didn't have anything fancy and, I honestly wouldn't have an issue if the service and food were good but, they were not. Ugh!"

  • "We were given a voucher for a dinner for two, and my expectations weren't super-high, it seems since they've reopened they're going for tourists, and the prices are really steep. A pleasant surprise! Service was lovely, no attitude because we were dining with a gift voucher, and both our meals were very good, as was the wine. Great, historic atmosphere, of course. Would I pay the menu prices for dinner here? No. But we thoroughly enjoyed our evening out and can't think of a reason not to recommend, as long as you're wallet is fat."

  • "The entire staff from start to finish was attentive, warm and welcoming. The food was very good. I had been there another time for drinks in the lobby late at night and enjoyed that very much. The area for sitting to lunch felt a bit stuffy---stiff chair to sit on. I prefer the lobby atmosphere better. However, that is not a negative, just my preference. I will be sure to come again. I certainly would recommend to others as a good place for a late night cocktail. Nice ambiance."

  • "We haven't been to New York City in a few years and, on a recent trip there, our 1st stop was lunch at The Round Table at the Algonquin Hotel. Just sitting there in that fabulous space was worth it. Add very good food (the hollandaise sauce was perfect), terrific service and the ghost of Dorothy Parker seated at my left - well, the experience was sublime. We were barely able to tear ourselves away to attend the Sunday matinee performance of "Twelfth Night"! (Another amazing experience!) What a perfect afternoon. We have every intention of repeating the experience regularly and encourage the remainder of the universe to join us."

  • "My family and I were stuck on a subway for over an hour during a recent visit to NYC, and as soon as we got out of the subway, we called the Algonquin to see if they could move our reservation. We also had theater tickets that night! The people at the Algonquin seemingly went out of their way to hold our reservation and helped us get a great meal and still have time to spare to get to our show a few minutes early. They were so kind and helpful and even though it was a rush, we never felt rushed at all. It was greatly appreciated and we would all recommend the Algonquin to friends. Not only is it a special place due to the history, but it is also a current spot for a great meal and great service."

  • "My husband took me to the Algonquin for my birthday because he bought a half price coupon, and, he knows I'm a Dorothy Parker fan, and she drank there. We began with Dry Martinis, as we Ms. Parker would have, and thus began a pleasant evening. Service was gracious and fluid and very professional. The steaks were good as were the scallops. The spinach was boiled to death and tasteless. There was a potato patty of some sort that I tasted that was okay. The wainscoting, lovely lighting, and long history of the Algonquin are the main attraction. It was a very good birthday treat."

  • "We had a Travelzoo voucher which made this night affordable. Arriving early we had a VERY expensive pre dinner cocktail in the Bar. My husband doesn't drink alcohol & we thought that $11 for a ginger beer was a bit over the top ! The food & wine at the Round Table was very nice but we were glad that we experienced this iconic Hotel with the Travelzoo voucher as full price would have made it a VERY expensive night . The service was very ordinary, not what we are used to in NYC."

Service very attentive, food great, and complimentary champagne and dessert in honor of the occasion.   • "We visited NYC over the Christmas holiday season- it was rainy and very busy - streets were crowded and it was cold and wet. The Algonquin was a quiet, warm oasis- we reserved a large table for 8- the staff catered to our every need. Food was delicious- especially the calamari (generous appetizer serving that was shared by all 8 of us)- crab cakes were perfect too. Menu was great for our group which was a mix of vegetarians and omnivores. Gorgeous setting- beautifully decorated for Christmas and fun to be in a classic NYC setting. Location was ideal and after our late lunch we had a short walk to Grand Central for our train home. Very easy to book our reservation online- we had such a great time- sure that we will return again!"

  • "Walked in, no greeters. Asked desk where the restaurant was:pointed vaguely back somewhere. Asked a man in back where the 'Round Table' is: he pointed to a round table under a painting. Um- 5 min. later, I again ask where we may go to find our reservations. OHHH! Here is your table! Welcome! Big smile! Sat at very nice comfortable table. Asked the waiter for vegetarian entree offerings. Looks at me half a second, replies: 'penne' then disappears. No offer to make a dish of vegetables or protein Nice upscale restaurant? Not. Order:orzo side dish, wedge salad no bacon, and a 'pot of hummus' /'pita chips' carb frenzy. Pita soft thin strips didn't hold hummus. My shirt did. Coffee ice cold. Dessert 25 min. late. Pre theatre? Late to the show"
