The Root Restaurant & Bar is a locally owned and operated business that showcases the seasonality of food and beverage in Michigan and its surrounding areas. The comfortable yet refined dining room and bar, accented with stained ash wood and limestone, feature an open kitchen and a chef's counter where the customers can sit and watch their food being made. Chef James Rigato's menu changes often and has a variety of options including a local grass-fed beef burger, house-made desserts, fresh seafood and in-house smoked meats. The Root Bar has 8 Microbrews on draft and a full selection of wines, bottled beer, alcohol and house cocktails incorporating a number of Michigan breweries, distilleries and winemakers.   • "We love The Root and go regularly. But Friday night was especially great. Our server Matt was awesome. He provided great service, was very knowledgeable about the menu and was also super friendly. We were with my sister and brother-in-law celebrating a couple things and he helped make the evening extra special. The food, of course, was incredible. The clam stew is so delicious and will bring us back very soon while it's still on the menu. Thank you for an excellent dining experience!!"

  • "Go to restaurant....especially with just the two of us for a great meal without having to get all dressed up, even though the food is 5 star. They have the best vegetarian options! My wife always gets the vegetarian tasting, and I always get something else, then like hers best and swear I will get the vegetarian menu next time.....but I never learn. I swear NEXT TIME I will try the vegetarian tasting. (It's just hard....everything on the menu is amazing.) The craft cocktails are great, and the wine pairing regardless of which menu you go for is always very good, and Michigan wines whenever possible. Just go!!"

  • "The food was very good and the flavors and pairings were interesting. I like that they use organic and local food. But I went to a similar restaurant in Mt. Pleasant, with equally good food and local sourcing, but the prices were much more reasonable. I had tuna in both places and the Mt. Pleasant restaurant gave you more for a cheaper price. The other thing was the drinks. Very expensive and for no good reason... The restaurant is a bit loud."

  • "The food is just top notch at this restaurant!! The wine was fabulous and they have an extensive Michigan beer variety. Most food is grown locally in Michigan and is sooooo fresh and full of flavor!! The service is just above and beyond and they are very well informed and knowledgable on what is being served. Would recommend this to everyone...the desserts just topped off the meal and were exquisite! Kudos to the chef and the owner. they have done a fantastic job!!"

  • "The service and staff were great. The food was quite good, but pricey. The fish special was Artic Char done in a fish and chips style, but at $25 a bit pricey for "fish/fries". Even though we were offered a complimentary dessert to honor our anniversary that we were celebrating, we couldn't find anything outstanding to choose from, so we skipped dessert. Again, our waitress was right on top of it, asking if we would like coffee instead. Don't know if we would go again for dinner, but would consider for lunch if they are open for lunch. The restaurant is slightly noisy."

  • "Been here twice. Each time had to request the manager regarding our food. Soup was tepid, had to be returned to be reheated. The Arctic Char was overcooked. The couscous was cold and this dish had to be sent back to be reheated. Had similar issues on our previous visit. Seems as though the ingredient combinations of the dishes are not harmonious, but haphazardly selected out of a hat and thrown together. My girlfriend said she does not want to return here."

  • "I'd been wanting to try this restaurant for over a year so when my sister and her boyfriend came to town, I suggested we go there. All of our food items were delicious. Between all of us, we tried the baby octopus salad, baked brie, seared scallops, pork shoulder and chicken & dumplings. The affocado and banana cream pie were also fantastic. Our server was attentive without hovering and thoroughly explained the restaurant's mission and daily specials without hesitation or sounding robotic. The only thing we found funny was that after telling us the restaurant tries to use food sources in MI or as close to MI as possible, baby octopus is the very first thing on the menu! No biggie but we all enjoyed a good chuckle over that. "

  • "One of our favorite restaurants in the Metro Detroit area. Heard of the chef via Food and Wine and were impressed from the first time we stepped in the restaurant. The staff is knowledgeable on the wine, beer and drink menu's as well as on the food menu itself. Staff is always friendly and energetic. Food has always been phenomenal. We'd be in trouble if this restaurant was closer to home. After having a few of the 'upscale' restaurants treat us like we are not worthy (cough Coach Insignia cough), we keep coming back to The Root and enjoy it more and more every time!!"

  • "We've been to the root multiple times before but joined friends of ours for a nice quiet delicious dinner. The wait staff was very pleasant and the noise level at a low since it was a Monday. The food as usual was delicious. The guys in the group had the meatloaf as it came highly recommended and they spent probably 20 min trying to figure out what was in it that gave it that amazing taste. We both had the shrimp and scallops, mine was shrimp only and she said it was delicious as well. We will be back for sure"

  • "I was disappointed a few months ago when I went to the root and just thought "maybe it's an off night for them" - I have been going to the root ever since it opened and didn't think twice about driving from Brighton because the food was always fun and had a great taste. I have no idea what has happened in the past 6 months although I am done with the root and it's a shame that such an awesome place has fallen with food quality and service. I had the scallop dish with risotto and it tasted like someone took white "Uncle Ben's" rice made from two days ago and called it risotto!! You have servers using decanters for some red wine and others not using decanters for the same red wine at different tables. These things never happened in the past! "

We did the 4 course taste and left stuffed and very impressed. Service was very good and friendly. Ambiance wasn't quite as romantic as we would have liked, but overall it was a great experience and we plan on going back."

  • "My son found out about your restaurant because he is vegetarian and likes the fact that you use local foods and produce. We took him there for his birthday along with six others. We enjoyed ordering many different things and tasting all of them from fried bologna to banana cream pie. Everything was excellent! I highly recommend your restaurant.
