I chose it to celebrate our anniversary and it did not disappoint.
I chose to order from their tasting dinner selections menu. I started with the crab cake appetizer. Flavors were so complex in every dish that my palette was treated with every bite. Next course was the asparagus salad which had mushrooms, red quinoa and sun flower seeds in a bright dressing. Main entree was their Ancho honey trout on a bed of spinach with potatoes and a rich creamy sauce. We finished the meal with a brown butter maple gelato.
We felt we were experiencing a meal from Top Chef from its elegance and flavor. Chef James is a rock star and I highly advise you to treat yourself and attend a concert at the Root.6/6/2013 12:00:00 AMAwesome as alwaysThe food is always amazing. They have a "taste" menu that offers two seperate options (one for vegans/vegetarians) and one for the traditional meat eater. (It's a 4-5 course meal: appetizer; salad; intermezzo; entree; and dessert) The portions for each course are generous --plenty to share with another person. Everyone that works there is very friendly. The only down side is that they forgot to serve the "intermezzo" of which is amazing when it is served. It was our first visit. The décor was casual, but nice, evoking the theme of connecting with the earth. The wine menu was acceptably priced, offering a range of pricing. I would have liked to see more CA Cabs on it, but that is my personal preference. We were given the wine menu before we opened the dinner menu, so we ordered a bottle before we saw that there was an available chef's menu with optional wine pairings; If we had seen that first, we would have ordered it. We know for next time. The food menu was limited, which was challenging for a picky eater. But all at the table were pleased with what we were served. Favorite? The beet salad was awesome! It is a little bit of a drive for us, about an hour, but well worth it. The food was excellent and our waiter was incredible. He knew the menu inside and out. It is out of the way but well worth it. The smoked pork shoulder was excellent and the beer sampler was tasty but I am by no means a beer expert. We started with the pickled vegetable side as an appetizer, then had the pea and ramp puree soup, the orchard salad and the smoked meatloaf with mashed potatoes. Every dish, every item a winner!
On a visit last year I'd had an issue with a small-ish size of my entree; no complaint on this visit! The salad was gorgeous, and huge! And the smoked meatloaf was served in big, thick slabs over potatoes and grilled brussel sprouts. Tremendous flavors!
The service was up to their high standards- helpful, professional, cheerful without being intrusive. The restaurant tries to use foods from local farmeres, which is a plus, both in terms of freshness, and supporting the local economy.
The menu is not extensive, but the creativity is escellent.
The wine list is very adequate .

We were early so went to the bar. It was packed but there was no lack of attention/service from several people checking on u. Craft cocktails were great.
My wife is not a vegetarian, but loves vegetarian food. When she realized everything she liked on the menu was vegetarian, she decided on the vegetarian tasting menu, and was not disappointed. (They have tasting menus both regular/vegetarian that you can get any time.)
Everything outstanding, overall knowledge of our waiter was great. Not enough characters left in this input field...I could go on and on. We were not disappointed. It was refreshing to see the level of professionalism in the kitchen and the attention to detail from not only the cooks, but the servers as well. Our server, Molly, was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the menu and accommodated my granddaughter's request for plain sauteed scallops, broccoli and crab cakes. The crab cakes were delicate and the other ingredients didn't overpower the flavor of the crab. The scallops were sweet, tender and without a speck of grit. I had the charcuterie board. The smoked meats were moist and tender, and the walleye spread was exceptional. Our server was great! The menu seems almost identical to the dinner menu, but it is creative and varied. To begin, cocktails were excellent. The bread basket is devine! The beet salad should be mandatory to order: it's perfect. Very ample portion and just enough dressing. The crab cake sandwich is a winner! Jumbo lump crab and not filled with bread crumbs. The bun was light and tasty. French fries are evil they are so good. I'm not a fan of the Mac and Cheese at all, but my guest loved it. The vegan dessert was better than expected and actually worthy of a repeat order.
