Diner Reviews
  • "Loved it. Wish we hadn't waited so long to try it out."

  • "My wife and I made our first visit and were truly delighted. We had terrific service and the food was outstanding. Great appetizer, the pork soup was delicious, and the honey pie was a total pleasant surprise (a must). we've already told several people and look forward to our next visit."

  • "Couldn't be happier with our experience at the Rieger. We chose the Rieger for dinner on my wife's birthday because we have always loved their high quality, creative, seasonal menu. They did a fantastic job of taking care of us and making her feel important on an important date. Love these people and will be back soon."

  • "We started with cocktails downstairs at Manifesto--always a unique experience--then upstairs for dinner. GREAT food, and a vibrant place to be."

  • "This is my boyfriend and I's absolute favorite restaurant. We have been probably ten times in the last few months, and have yet to have anything that was not terrific. The service is excellent (ask for Mango, he's great), the drinks are delicious and we'll balanced, and the food is outstanding. We would very highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a fantastic night out for a wonderful meal."

  • "I was surprised how much food we had on our plates. My husband and I ordered the special salmon and the special veal. Both were delicious and we got a real portion. The desserts, honey pie and s'mores custard, were also tasty and good sized. The Rieger was definitely a good value for upscale dining. My only complaint was that it was a little loud for my liking. Other than that, this is a very fun place to eat."

  • "We took some friends to dinner to celebrate a special occasion, and enjoyed our evening so much! While this may seem odd, the food item that everyone absolutely raved over was the sweet potato soup! My husband, who knows his way around a beautiful medium-rare steak, couldn't stop talking about how delicious his KC Strip was. The peach polenta cake was one-of-a-kind and very tasty. Our water glasses were well-attended-to!"

  • "My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our first dinner at The Rieger Hotel. Everything we tried was beautifully prepared and plated. I had the melon salad which was out of this world. My husband loved the fried green tomatoes and the pork soup. Our entree's were perfect - the Missouri trout for me and the rabbit for my husband, which he couldn't believe was so good! Thank you for making our anniversary dinner extra special."

  • "We were wanting to enjoy and evening out together and ready to try somewhere we hadn't been to yet. So glad we chose Rieger! We've heard lots of praise and agree with all of it. Dinner was wonderful, the heirloom risotto was delightful and our server was just the right amount of helpful and invisible that you want on an evening together. Looking forward to our next visit!"

  • "This is our 6th or 7th visit. We go for the food. Chef Hanna and his entire staff are always "on"! Love the chef's table. We'll be back next week."
    Dined on 7/31/2014
  • "If you want good but not great food, that you can only access after enduring surly and pretentious staff, all topped off by a bill more fitting of an actually superb restaurant, then maybe you should come here. Other than that, skip it and go to Extra Virgin."
    Dined on 7/30/2014
  • "Food was delicious and service was excellent. Only complaint was that it was WAY too loud. Almost impossible to have a conversation across the table. Noise level could be reduced if the music were turned down. There would still be noise (talking), but it wouldn't compete with loud music."

  • "I loved the ambience of Rieger, but I was disappointed in the food. I ordered the fried rabbit which came with a buttermilk biscuit and corn on the cob. The rabbit meat was tender, but I had a problem with the breading. It reminded me of something I used to eat as a child at the local pizza dive that I now find disgusting: chicken fries. The entire dish was heavy and one-note. The corn was rubbery and old. The biscuit was delicious and was the best part of the meal. We also ordered fried green tomatoes which were better than my meal but still not up to what I had expected. We had s'mores custard for dessert which was delicious. The graham cracker crumble on top had a perfect crunch. The service was great, but I expected more from the food."

  • "I've been a fan of The Reiger since they opened, but the evening I took guests, Mr. Reiger dropped the ball. Our tentative waiter said the menu was new and being tuned - uh oh. Starters were good, mains were mediocre. The salmon special was dried out, perhaps due to our long wait between starters and mains. My rabbit dish (others rave about it) was a strange plate concoction that just didn't work. One rabbit piece was like a 3pm fast food chicken strip and the thrown-in jalepenos were inexplicable on this dish. Trying to save face, I suggested desserts. When I eat dessert I want to feel guilty pleasure. After the peach-polenta crumble, which resembled a fast food biscuit, the only guilt I felt was suggesting Reiger in the first place."

  • "My boyfriend and I have been to this restaurant on five different occasions, and it has been fantastic each time. The food is amazing, the specialty drinks are delicious and the service is wonderful. The rieger hotel has officially become both of our favorite restaurant in kansas city"

  • "My wife and I tried The Rieger Hotel on short notice and were delighted with the overall experience. We tried two of their impressive cocktails, appetizers, soup and entrees. Each was delightful in its own way. I particularly enjoyed the Rieger version of corn chowder. Our waiter was excellent, just the right amount of attention. Overall, everything was excellent! We plan on returning to try new items!"

  • "I've been to the Rieger many times, and it never misses a beat. Every dish has something about it to make it surprising and better than you thought it could be. For instance, we ordered the buttermilk panna cotta for dessert. It had all the smooth vanilla creaminess you'd expect, but it also had flecks of pepper. Gave it a pop and sparkle that was just incredible. Thanks, Rieger. All great."

  • "Our visit was wonderful! The food was very delicious and our server Kim did a great job making us feel comfortable. We will be back! Thanks."

  • "We both chose the beet salad which was beyond excellent, the beets were tasty and the combination of the textures was interesting. I wish I had a jug of the beet puree', it was a memorable part of the salad. Both of us chose the KC strip, medium rare and the Rieger did not disappoint. Cooked to perfection but hot throughout and flavorful, enhanced . I sliced mine as thin as I could so the experience would last. The Montasio potatoes were superb, my companion said they were the best potatoes she has ever ate, which I second. The asparagus was cooked perfectly and very high quality. For dessert we opted for both the Chocolate Bombe' and the Icebox cake, with coffee. The Bombe' was very tasty but the Icebox cake was memorable."

  • "Have eaten at this restaurant several times with my wife and other couples, usually on a Friday or Saturday night. This was the first time hosting a business dinner for out of town clients in the middle of the week. As usual the service was great and the food was excellent. Everyone in our group had nothing but good things to say about the food and the atmosphere, and since they were all from the great foodie town of Chicago and have all experienced some great places to eat, I took their comments to heart. I recommend the smoked trout appetizer and the sweetbread entrée. Enjoy!"

  • "Never disappoints. We took some friends from the East coast, one of whom is a sommelier and master of wine--they were very impressed."

  • "Although the food was outstanding as usual, our server (we sat in the bar area) was more interested in the men at the counter than actually doing her job. I just hope they tipped her well, because my typical generous tip was decreased. She mixed up drinks, and only brought us one dessert. The timing of everything was awful. We ordered specific after dinner cocktails to complement our dessert orders, but the one dessert came out 20 minutes after!! Even though we arrived with plenty of time to make an 8:00 show (5:30), we were scrambling because of such poor service. Even though the food was excellent, it'll be a while before I return because of this. Braunschweiger mousse, crispy lamb and panna cotta - outstanding!!"

  • "Noise level is way too loud for potentially romantic dinner. Otherwise, loved it."

  • "we started with the famed pork soup. It was tasty, but not sure what all the fuss is about from other reviewers. The beef carpacio appetizer was fantastic as was my special G &T. Our waiter was attentive and quick. I had the catfish with a side of the artichokes in lemon and my sister had a steak. Both were cooked to perfection, the fish flaky and moist and her steak was rare and flavorful. The sides were small but delicious. We enjoyed the experience and give this restaurant a thumbs up. It is a very vibrant and LOUD enviornment. The room is small and tables are quite close together which some will enjoy and others will not. It is not for families but seems to be for those dating and couples out with friends. Very hip and trendy!"

  • "I took my culinarily savvy best friend *who has lived in New York City for 9 years), and she said this was the best dinner she'd had in months. We had the appetizer lobster rolls to start, followed by fried the soft shell crab and fried catfish, and the house made gnocchi. All of the pasta is made-in house. Bartenders really know their stuff...I recommend the Rieger G&T. We had the special for dessert: homemade strawberry sorbet and hot chocolate cake--YUM."

  • "My husband & I started our weekend with friends over happy hour at a downtown KC bar and had a terrible experience. Our weekend was saved when we moved on to dinner at The Rieger. Staff always makes people feel like they're glad to see you, something that does not happen as often as it should in the hospitality industry. Cocktails at The Rieger are a treat; I usually order the Pendergast bourbon specialty drink. I started dinner with the chilled artichoke soup; tasty but quite filling so I didn't finish it because I did not want to spoil my appetite. My husband and I both had the salmon special and enjoyed the most vibrantly colored Alaskan salmon either of us could remember. We finished with the ice box cake, an excellent summer treat!"

  • "We enjoyed a nicely prepared and well presented dinner for 5 guests. We ordered 2 appetizers - trout and crab, and in our opinion, the trout won out by a landslide. Our entree selections were significantly varied, from a medium rare steak to the vegetarian Sformato, and each was beautifully prepared and presented. While the evening's meal was not overly rushed, it's worth a comment that our food was presented in a timely fashion. After spending over 3 hours at a different restaurant for a nice dinner, we finished a 3-course meal in under 90 minutes - a welcome difference!"

  • "There was a constant haze of smoke from the kitchen in the entire dining room that was very irritating. Our server said it like that anytime they make chicken dishes, which is every night. They need to install a venting system! Food was ok, but not great. Trying too hard to be foodie, and need to dial it back a notch."

  • "After an evening at the West 18th Street Fashion Show, we enjoyed a very nice dinner at The Rieger. We have been in there for drinks on at least three occasions but this was our first chance for dinner. We split a beet salad for starters to go with great bread. While there were some interesting pairings on the menu, we stayed a little mainstream. My wife had the chicken and mashed potatoes while I have the pork loin and swiss chard. Good, solid entrees. Nothing on the dessert menu jumped out at as so we passed on it. Attentive service but the refilling of the water glasses was a little much considering we had a bottle on the table. Next time I will take some stools by the open kitchen and watch owner/chef Howard Hanna work his magic."

  • "The owner and head chef, Howard always has time to chat with his guests and share a bit of nostalgia about the process he's been through in developing this wonderful restaurant along with his superb staff. Never had one iota of negativity, staff in bad moods or unaccommodating. When someone asks me what I would recommend for food and character in Kansas City I always put this on their list. Great prices, excellent food and fun drink lists (The Cartographer or Prescription Only all excellent blends of new flavors). I also appreciate the choice of where this restaurant is located. It is a historic hotel building that served the working class formers of Kansas City. Be sure to check out the newly restored mural in the parking of the Rieger."

  • "The Rieger is an amazing experience--the history, the food, the service, the cocktails...I had a great time. The server was very knowledgeable and could suggest new cocktails to try that would pair nicely with our meal. The pork soup was amazing! Each dish is very unique and deliciously prepared. What a gem!!"

  • "From the creative cocktail menu (Pendergast if you like Buffalo Trace), down to the desserts, this was an excellent restaurant choice. The service was excellent, and since it was a relatively small place, the chef coursed out our meal as we completed each one- there was no "sorry that your entree arrived before your salad" deal as you can get at supposedly, nice places. Definitely going back. "
