A word from The Richmond
Message from John & Thu Ha: The Richmond is a small family owned restaurant. Our goal is to deliver upscale food and service at neighborhood prices. Since the Spring of 2005, we have created relationships with local farmers and ranchers. The entire Richmond Restaurant family would like to thank our suppliers, and most importantly, our loyal customers for your support. We are proud to have you as part of our small community. Wine Program: Our goal is to offer some of the cheapest "restaurant" wine prices in the Bay Area. We believe most local restaurants take advantage of customers with overly inflated wine prices. My wife and I are committed to selling wine at more than 30 percent below typical restaurant pricing. Our wine list has an emphasis on small local family wineries. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "The two front rooms in the old-storefront window are clovered by velvet drapes for great old-world mood and privacy. Waiter was slow to greet us and when he did (ten minutes later), he just walked up and asked what we wanted. He did not communicate very much. Took easilty another 20 minutes to bring our wine. Did not offer bread, but later an amuse bouche appeared (delicious). It continued like this thru the meal -- slow and inattentive I loved everything else, food was great, but the consistently bad service ruined the meal."

  • "Went here for a girlfriend's birthday. The food is great and the service is outstanding...never had an empty water glass and they gave us our dessert as a birthday gift for the birthday girl! The chef apparently always makes a special appetizer to give complimentary to his guests...we got brie and ham on puff pastry: delicious and so very thoughtful!"

  • "Great service and the staff was very attentive and friendly and definitely not over bearing. Would definitely come back again and a few more times after that."

  • "We have been to the Richmond several times as we live just a block away! Find it to be a nice Nopa alternative (not replacement). Love the Billie Holiday-esque music, the romantic curtains, wine is always good and you know you'll get an above average meal for a reasonable price. We took a couple of friends there to show off our neighborhood gem, and were treated pretty rudely. We made a reservation and arrived late but still within 5 minutes so I held on calling. We got there and the server was extremely rude, mentioned how he didn't know if we would show, and that we needed to order immediately before the kitchen closed. Understood the message, but the extreme attitude at greeting and through service was unappreciated."

  • "This place remains one of our absolute favorite places to eat, esp. if you want a quiet place where you can actually hear each other. The food is incredible and we have loved every one of our meals there."

  • "There were 6 of us and we all agreed that we truly enjoyed Richmond - for the value, for the taste, for the ample portions, for the service. We went without any expectation and was pleasantly surprised to find a lovely restaurant so close to home. Parking can be quite a challenge in this neighborhood but we definitely plan on coming back."

  • "I took my boyfriend out for his birthday and actually had to apologize for taking him there for his special day. The food was not good and the steak actually tasted funky. The service was disappointing. We like to dine. Take things slow and order as we like. It felt like the waiter was rushing us to order. When we ordered appetizers he told us that we had to order the entree at the same time. I understand that restaurants like to turn tables more quickly but as there was only 2 other tables in the restaurant besides us it didn't seem appropriate. In addition, a restaurant should not make it so obvious that they're trying to turn the tables as it makes the patron feel rushed. I was disappointed and will not go there again."

  • "The Richmond is a terrific gem with excellent food, service and cute ambiance. This was our second visit and we will be back many more times as the food is excellent and the prices below what you would find at comparable restaurants."

  • "The Richmond is our go to quality restaurant: a post work day evening walk, high quality food, quiet talk, good wine. A neighborhood gem......receiving citywide notice. We came with friends.....8pm reservation.....left at 10pm. John is the Chef and owns The Richmond .......during the evening he walks the tables checking in with diners. The food is always well prepared. The wine list is strong. And the menu changes with enough frequency to keep coming back interesting."

  • "Definitely a quaint place & food is delicious. Could use some improvement with ambiance. Maybe some candles on the tables. But, overall great romantic spot for dinner."

  • "The Richmond is a very favorite neighborhood restaurant. Wonderful comfort food and service, and the owners/chefs, are always warm and welcoming, as if you are a guest in their home. Little touches in the sauces and preparation make their dishes sparkle!"

  • "I have been to the Richmond many times and usually love it. I have had some great food there. I brought a friend of mine who is a chef because I thought it would be somewhere he would love. Sadly this time the food was a let down. I am hoping it was just an off night."

  • "We LOVE The Richmond. Food is deliciously prepared, staff is attentive but not intrusive, the wine list is varied but all reasonably priced. The Richmond is our go-to restaurant when we want a "California elegant" meal--scrumptious food without pretension served in an atmosphere that's as hospitable for "jeans-and-a-jacket" casual meal to an "impress-your-inlaws" night out."

  • "I thoroughly enjoyed dinner here with my fiancee the night before we moved out of San Francisco. We went late in the evening on a Wednesday and received attentive and enthusiastic service. Our waiter graciously arranged and presented wine pairing selections to match our appetizer and entree selections (even though we weren't ordering off the fixed course menu, for which the standard wine pairing accompaniment was specified). The short rib and scallops over polenta appetizer was the best part of my meal, but the duck entree that followed was also excellent. Overall a fantastic experience and the perfect way to celebrate the bittersweet moment of leaving town ..."

  • "Hi, We had a great experience at the Richmond. We had one night for a "good meal" in San Francisco and wanted to eat someplace special to celebrate a birthday. The reviews on Yelp were good and so we tried it. Prices were excellent...especially for the size of portion and the flavors. Service was great. They had a large party so Chef/Owner John came out to welcome us and make sure we were not neglected. They did a great job of taking a small space and making it cozy and feel special. The food amazing...great flavors and an overall wonderful experience. They are a hard working restaurant that is doing it right and I would not hesitate to tell others to try The Richmond. Well worth it! I will go back...."

  • "We, and our friends & table-mates, feel that the Richmond Restaurant is a quiet, comfortable, and much loved Place to eat. It is not our 'first time' there, and we still thoroughly enjoy our time there. It is really an Neighborhood Gem. We sincerely hope they are able to keep up the whole outstanding experience long into the future."

  • "Delicious well prepared and presented food using top ingredients. Reasonable prices. Chef came out to check on us, which is always nice. Very conveniently near the DeYoung and Golden Gate Park."

  • "The food was great, but the joint was strangely empty and quiet. Our food was very good, but unfortunately we almost all had to settle for our second choice of beverage and entree because they were out of quite a few items. I might go back again to try more items, but not for the atmosphere."

  • "We've been to The Richmond three times. This last time the service was lacking, the limited menu has grown old, and proper wine glasses were not used. We had to wait 10 minutes for the waiter to take our wine order and another 5 minutes for him to appear with wine. I don't mind waiting for dinner, but for beverages to take so long is unacceptable. I don't know what the problem was as the restaurant was not crowded on the Thursday night we were there. The food was all right, although the other couple we were with felt there just weren't enough choices to satisfy them. I could see their point."

  • "Great experience: very nice server and food was well prepared and presented. We were tucked in a nook created by drapes right next to the front door. The heavy drapes did the job providing a cozy, warm space on a chilly SF evening."

  • "A last minute Christmas Eve dinner out and was pleased The Richmond was available. I've dined here a few times and always find the quality and presentation of the food top notch. The downside is finding parking (allow an extra 30 minutes to roam!) and the service. I presume since it was Christmas Eve, the restaurant did not anticipate it being busy, but all the tables were filled when we arrived and there was just one waiter and a hostess that should have helped out more. But the other times I've been there, the service did not meet the food quality experience. I will continue to eat at The Richmond despite the service, as I feel the excellent food and reasonable prices for wine and the gourmet food, is worth the wait!"

  • "The only comment is the food was a little too salty . I've been there before and I don't remember it being this salty."
    Dined on 12/24/2013
  • "I think perhaps the regular chef was out that day. The crab salad was salty (the sauce) and the duck was mushy, loaded with way too much sauce and super salty. To the point of bitterness! There was so much of that sauce the mash potatoe disappeared Everything else was great, the wine, the service, but this restaurant seems to have forgotten the most important thing - the food!"

  • "The chef, John Owyang continues to create great food which is well presented. The restaurant is small and the ambiance does not fit the food."

  • "I needed to find a restaurant in the area to meet my parents for dinner. It was perfect: good food, good wine, good service and quiet - we could actually hear each other speaking at a normal volume! I had salmon - delicious and medium rare. My parents are very discriminating eaters and enjoyed the food very much. My Mom had a cheese/vegetable tart that she loved. My Dad had NY steak - he said it was cooked perfectly."

  • "I had never been to the Richmond before. I went because of it's location and it's high Zagat rating. My expectations were not especially high. I found the entire experience delightful. The food was very tasty and imaginative and expertly prepared. The service was attentive and gracious. Overall I was surprised at how outstanding the experience was. I would highly recommend the Richmond."

  • "This restaurant was recommended for the fabulous food and we were not disappointed. The location itself is fine, although street parking scant. Ambience was disappointing. Located in an old storefront building, the restaurant is oddly sectioned up. There's a small main dining area, a little hallway with a miniscule bar, and a weird bay window table completely cut off from other areas which is where we sat. Heavy red velvet curtains closed us into the alcove and cut us off from other diners and also server activity. It felt like we were eating in our living room! Nice for seeking privacy on special occasions I guess, but we wanted more interaction - this was simply not a fun place to eat."

  • "Terrific entrees at moderate prices. This is a small restaurant perfect for dinner with a friend or small group. The atmosphere is simple and very pleasant. The only downside is finding parking in this area, give yourself plenty of time to do this."

  • "Nice cozy restaurant where you can have a quiet conversation and not have to elbow the person at the next table every time you move. The entrees are very good and service was attentive. We had the steak and the salmon. Both are very good."

  • "I took my boyfriend who is absolutely picky about how scallop got cooked. He also loved hanger steak & I enjoyed the duck dish, we ended the evening with yummy chocolate brownie & icecream dessert. Richmond serves great wine collection. I am glad we have such a notable place to eat at the quiet Richmond district."

  • "We had the 5 course tasting menu accompanied by the wine tasting menu. It was absolutely delicious and a bargain at $75 per person. We will definitely be back next time we are back in town. An absolute gem of a place."

  • "Although we've lived in the Richmond for a while now, we hadn't heard people mention The Richmond restaurant and hadn't tried it yet. We recently had a Friday night dinner there, and are so pleased to have a new favorite. The heirloom tomato salad was a stand out, as was the hanger steak. We also enjoyed the art and the reasonable prices. We'll be back soon to try more on the menu. Truly a neighborhood gem."
