  • "It took too long to take our order, and too long to bring water and provide refills, even after asking. Food took forever to be brought out (how can it take over an hour to make a burger?). Although we requested ketchup with our order, we had to ask four times before any was brought to the table. After clearing our dishes, it took forever to get the waiter's attention."

  • "We drove to Big Sur to enjoy lunch and the scenic view. We made a reservation but upon arrival found out that the patio was closed for a special private party that evening. We could not dine on patio or even step foot out on it to see the view. I ordered the burger and thought it was just ok however the fries were crispy. My husband ordered the fish special which was swordfish and enjoyed. Our waiter was very nice!"

  • "Our party of 4 came arrived for Father's Day dinner right after an 8-mile hike at nearby Andrew Molera SP. Expecting not to be dressed appropriately for a more formal dining room, I had expressed a preference for outdoor seating in my reservation. But when we arrived, the hostess declined to seat us in the patio, where other diners were, saying fog could be rolling in any time and it would be cold. Wait staff was overly formal in a stuffed-shirt way. The saving grace: our food was beautifully presented. All four of us enjoyed how the appetizer and each main course that we selected was prepared in just a slightly different way than we each had expected, but delightfully so. Praises to the chef."

  • "Paul Corsentino has made a dramatically awesome impact on this once just ok restaurant. We last visited here about 15 years ago. Big Sur is a special place on its own and now the Ventana Restuarant more than rises to the occasion. The food is imaginative, presented beautifully and quite tastey! We ate dinner twice here and as guest of Ventana Inn had the opportunity to have breakfast that was also excellent. The service was excellent without being overly attentive."

  • "Stopped here for dinner on the way up the Big Sur coast. The dining room was warm and inviting, and there's a large outdoor patio (with heat lamps) if you want to enjoy the view (which may/may not be that great, depending on the fog level). There's a 4 course meal for $95 or you can order individual items a la carte. Four of us ordered a la carte and had enough to eat, though the prices (as expected) were high ($18 for a small plate of fresh veggies, which included a couple of squash blossoms, fancy carrots and sliced green beans). Two in the party had the steak which was tasty. The food was fresh and tasty and presented well. Service was excellent."

The weather was perfect, I would not think a great location if windy or cold. The food was good but not exciting. The price was right for the location. Definitely a must return place."

  • "We went to Ventana for our anniversary dinner, but had some reservations due to negative reviews online. However, our experience was outstanding. The food was superb and the service was professional and courteous. The food presentation was beautiful. The restaurant manager on duty visited our table twice to be sure everything was to our liking. I requested a window table for our special occasion and the staff put two tables together at a corner window for us. I recommend The Restaurant at Ventana highly."

  • "The ocean view is one of the better ones along this part of the Pacific Coast. The food was delicious and included one of the best pieces of swordfish I have had. The salmon appetizer was also excellent. Overall the service was good. Our waiter was a little less attentive than desirable, not being there when the entree was served nor soon after and not coming back to ask if we wanted more drinks until we were almost finished eating. The food only gets a restaurant part of the way to being excellent, the service gets a restaurant the rest of the way and Ventana did not make it the rest of the way."

  • "The menu has changed, prices have gone up significantly and without that patio being open... the eating and drinking experience at Ventana Inn is subpar now. Oddly enough, we felt rushed and, without request, the bill showed up after our plates were taken away. There was not even a chance to digest and request a post dinner drink. We were highly disappointed. It was not worth the drive up to Ventana. I wish that we had chosen Post Ranch Inn, instead."

  • "In one of the most amazing settings imaginable, Ventana has lost its former excellence and is now tired and below average in every way: a pedestrian menu and wine cellar, dull food prep and presentation, friendly but amateurish service, and decor that is long overdo for an upgrade. The first clue was the empty tables at 7:30. The second was the basket of grocery store quality bread. The rest followed suit, with odd combinations of ingredients (asparagus and chunks of mozzarella?) and entrees the theme of which was protein on a bed of carbomush (u pick: polenta, mashed potatoes, barley, rice, pasta). Skip it, and splurge across the street for a truly exceptional experience. "

  • "The meal on the whole was enjoyable and choices from the chef's menu were available as fixed price for pick one from four categories (starter, appetizer, main and dessert) or ala carte. Three of us picked the Monk fish which I found slightly salty for my taste and one person picked the short ribs which she thoroughly enjoyed. All in all the ingredients appeared to be fresh, well prepared and pleasing in presentation. As compared to its across the road competitor, Post Ranch Inn, the meal would be value added. The Post Ranch Inn meal was double the price for a comparable meal but has a fabulous scenic view of the Big Sur and the setting sun and as a result was also more crowded. The Ventana has a limited coast view from their patio. "

  • "We have been coming to the Monterey area together since 1989/1990 timeframe. A local friend recommended Ventana's and it is now our favorite dining spot when we visit. The food, ambiance, view, drinks are all superb but what sets Ventana's above so many places is their wonderful customer service! We were in town for a wedding but also celebrating our anniversary and the staff at Ventana's treated us with warm wishes and rare consideration. Put Ventana's on your bucket list - you will not be disappointed!!"

  • "Poorly trained receptionist (Courtney) almost ruined the evening::: promised us the last nice window table available when we checked in with her at the front desk and then while we're waiting to be seated, she gives it to another couple who complained about their assigned table! (and we're customers who have been coming here for over 30+ years) BUT: server Richard and manager Matthew to the rescue after seeing this go down themselves, and they graciously apologized and offered up some food amenities along with great service the remainder of our evening. Courtney needs to go to customer service school or get out of the hospitality industry. New chef on board, and we look forward to our next visit to see his developing vision for the menu."

  • "With good intentions, Ventana tried to hit the mark but most dishes (of the 4 course option) missed the mark. The cold zucchini soup was a low point (poorly seasoned and executed). While the pretense is that this restaurant fits the mold of the hotel with it's luxurious look and feel, the restaurant fails in this vain. The seating is poorly conceived and tables awkward in shape and size. I had higher expectations for not only the food quality but decor. I think with improvements the restaurant could be a star."
