Diner Reviews
  • "Great meal. Took a date here and she was wowed. Now she's wowed with me!"

  • "Our dinners were creative dishes cooked to perfection. The meal was one of the best values we've experienced. We wish it wasn't so far from home."

  • "We were at dinner on July 5 when guest chef Matt Bolus was visiting. The snapper crudo was absolutely fabulous. We also had the shrimp sausage appetizer and the amberjack with dirty rice and the pork chop dinner with fried okra - They were all excellent. We love the refinery and would love to see more visiting chefs!"

  • "Excellent food at a reasonable price without the snobby atmosphere. Just need a location in Pinellas."

  • "Only been once so it is hard to tell whether the menu that supposedly changes "three to four times a week" actually does. The food was pretty great if not a little convoluted and a little too salty. The service was great and atmosphere enjoyable. Truly a welcome change in a town smothered with chain eateries in sprawling, strip mall matrix. For a long time it seemed like the only thing original you could get was Caribbean, Latino or Central/South American."

  • "Pre-dinner communications with The Refinery is very positive, from attractive website to reservations via phone. TR is clearly a step up in a neighbourhood that could use more such efforts. The dining room is smallish, the tables simple, chairs upright wood, acoustics still an issue. The great beers selection is not matched on the wine side, this could improve. The Dinner Menu is more limited than expected, and on this visit not even include some items that received great reviews...so a disappointment at so few choices. Pork belly was overcooked and dry, but the chicken entree was perfectly cooked! Delicate clams were overwhelmed by the dish's other (of too many) ingredients. The Cuban bakery across the street is an opportunity missed."

  • "Came here with a few friends I was treating to a thank you dinner for helping me move. They had never dined here before, and my fiancé and I had only eaten here once. Everyone loved their meals. Each was special, interesting, delicious. Great presentation. Decent beer variety, and we shared dessert. We wanted to get both desserts but one was not available. Service was polite but a little off. Tables were a little close together, and clientele is friendly and trendy/fun atmosphere, but would be nice to have a little more space. Seems reservations are inside only, and would be nice to have an option to make a reservation to eat outside. We had a great time and loved our food though, and we will all come again and recommend to our friends."

  • "My wife and I love the refinery because first and foremost they have the best burger ever. Its not even close to any other. We had the burgers and the pork belly appetizer and it was truly a five-star meal. The food is high end and the menu is always being updated to reflect the chefs skills and the great local food. Also, they have a great beer list thst adds to the overall experience."

  • "Had a reservation and were seated immediately. The waiter was attentive, pleasant and knowledgable. Had the Pork Belly appetizer (first time for pork belly) - it was good - the crust was stupendous. Had the braised beef shank and it melted in my mouth. The rest of the plate was very tasty also. My partner had the swordfish and was very pleased with it. They have a good craft beer slection and good wine selection. The dining room is a bit austere but pleasant."

  • "A fun place to grab a few drinks and some dinner and a great date spot! The refinery is small enough to feel exclusive and well enough known to be considered a treat. My date loved her burger and my double cut pork chop was great and cooked to a perfect med raw (med rare, I requested it that way instead of medium) the compound butter on top complimented it nicely and added a nice fat to the dish since the pork chop was so well trimmed. We shared the chicken meatballs as an appetizer which was a done well. Just a suggestion if you try it, let them sit for 3-4 minutes to cool down before you eat them. They were served a little too hot to truly appreciate their flavor on our first few bites. From one chef to another, well done keep it up!"

  • "Food was average at best. Chef seems to be trying too hard to be creative or to use what ingredients he has, it doesn't work, Chicken was salty, sides were bland, beef tongue was dry and chewy, watermelon didn't work with dish, fried sweetbreads was bland also. White cheddar popcorn burger was good I guess but nothing wowed any of us. No one at our table said they would come back, although the restaurant concept was cool it just falls short. Service was excellent and employees were attentive and nice. Go to Edison instead, it's a far better restaurant."

  • "Don't know what all the hype is about. No class whatsoever. The food was mediocre at best. Good place for the neighborhood to hang out but don't go out of your way to get there!!"

  • "We ordered both desserts last Friday (May 30th) and were very disappointing. Neither was good, both were way over priced for what you got. We will skip dessert next time. Otherwise, dinner was excellent."

  • "Comfortable restaurant with interesting and diverse food/drink selections. Makes good effort (with success) to deliver innovative food/drink choices at reasonable price level. "

  • "We really enjoyed our dinner at The Refinery. It was our first time there but I understand the menu changes weekly. The offerings were unique and we loved that it wasn't the typical fair you see on every restaurant menu. If you're a picky eater - don't eat here - but if you are open minded and enjoy trying new things then this restaurant is not to be missed. The service was excellent and we pretty much went with our waiter's recommendations. I would add that even though we ate 3 courses (splitting dessert) I wasn't overly full and the food was on the lighter side which I appreciate. We will certainly be going back for more!"

  • "The dining experience was a bit different, as the restaurant prides itself on fresh ingredients and innovative dishes. We ate on a roof top on a lovely warm evening which was a very nice experience. "

  • "Limited selections, no bread served, not much that even sounded good, one side dish was so garlicky as to be inedible, trying too hard to be cutting edge and forgetting that the food is supposed to taste good. "

  • "First time visit. May be the best meal of the past 12 months. Outstanding. What I saw and devoured was a perfect plate ... all the better because I know how easy it is to botch Amberjack. Already planning second visit."

  • "Dined at the refinery Saturday night and the food and service was top notch. I have been in the service industry for 18 yrs. and I have dined at chef-driven concepts all over the country. I found that the chefs at The Refinery used well thought out ingredients and fresh local fare to allow for remarkable presentations and new food combinations. You can't go wrong If your looking for A casual dinner that will exceed your expectations. "

  • "the food was prepared well but was overdone as far as the list of ingredients in every dish. if half of the ingredients were left off, it would have tasted the same. the appetizers and entrees were good, but not worth the price. the desserts were horrible. I had something called cornbread trifle. the cornbread was burnt and dry. I told the waiter but he did nothing about it. he was very pushy and wanted us to order right away. I will not go back. "

  • "Since we were 17 mins late due to pooring down rain our table was given away-even though when they called us at 15 min late and we said we were across the st they cancelled our table. It was not crowded as it was a mid week night. Then they put us at a table upstairs on the patio where rain was bouncing off our table and was extremely noisy. Finally one server came and asked us if we would like a table downstairs afterall since 'someone cancelled' and we moved. The table was much quieter. The food, although on Tampa Bay top 50 list', was unremarkable at best. My salad greens had sand/dirt on them and it made it impossible to eat. No one bothered asking why I had not eaten more than a few bites. The dessert they raved about was 'okay' only. "

  • "The service was terrible until I addressed it with the owner Michelle and she was more than apologetic for her wait staffs ignorance. She was a gem about the whole fiasco. The food was fabulous. I would give it another try and hope I am waited in more quickly. "

  • "As the title implies, my wife and I took my mother to celebrate mother’s day. The staff was friendly and competent with just the right amount of attentiveness. The food was unique, flavorful and prepared beautifully. The ambiance was warm and inviting while still being clean and professional. Would recommend to anyone looking to enjoy a great meal in a wonderful atmosphere."

  • "My boyfriend and I have heard a lot of buzz about The Refinery lately, and it really does live up to its reputation. The food was fresh, the dishes creative, and the beers local. The service was excellent--our server was so sweet and attentive. I have nothing to complain about and everything to rave about this place. We'll definitely be going back to see what deliciousness the rotating menu has to offer next week!"

  • "I loved the relaxed atmosphere and our servers were friendly and attentive. The food was fantastic, it was hard to pick our favorite dish of the evening because it was all so great!! Will definitely return...soon!"

  • "Most of the other 7 folks said their food was decent. I ordered roast chicken but it didn't seem to get very roasted. Skin was still pale yellow. Some rawness inside. Covered in lots of local farm veggies with no real flavor. I could not bite thru what I think was cauliflower?. I found the actual white meat of the chicken to be very bland where it was actually cooked. I don't send food back, I just do not ever come back. There are way too many decent restaurants in Tampa to return to one that can't get chicken right. Also $10.00 to $12.00 for a glass of plain red or rose wine is ridiculous. The 2 desserts tasted terrible. no sweetness at all. How does that happen ??"

  • "Brought my SO for the second time this year. The first visit was great; the food is amazing, and the environment is a refreshing change of scenery compared to most other restaurants. Everything on the menu sounded great, and all their food being local added a fresh presence. Would recommend it to all."
