Diner Reviews
  • "I often go to the Refectory, because it is generally the best restaurant in town. However my last meal--veal ragout--was disappointing. During my last two visits the service was too slow. The restaurant has bistro meals, which are served only during early hours. These are three-course meals for around $25. They are a good value, and the meals are usually quite good."

  • "Can never go wrong with The Refectory. Recent menu change has several outstanding choices. The best dining experiences I've ever had."

  • "We visited the Refectory for the first time on Monday. The maitre D' was very knowledgeable about the history of the establishment. It added to the character of the beautiful building. We arrived on time and were seated without waiting. All of the waiters and servers were very pleasant. The waiter was helpful in selecting menu items. Everyone was discreetly attentive. The portions of the food were just right. We were not rushed or felt we had to hurry through our meal. We had time between the appetizer and meal to enjoy each. Although there was a need to change the menu, the offered items were delicious. My complements to the chef and staff! Thank you for an amazing first visit!"

  • "My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary at the Refectory, and the staff went out of their way to make us feel special. Although we did not request any special instructions, our waiter, Justin, brought us sparking wine to toast when we sat down, and later gifted us a dessert and some dessert wine. The food, as always, was excellent, and Justin's wine recommendation was lovely. The Refectory is one of the few places in Columbus that really sets the mood for a wonderful evening and makes diners feel special. We are lucky to have this gem in Columbus!"

  • "Excellent special gambas and herb infused soup. Skate wing always reliable. Bison accompanying gambas was disappointing, maybe under warming lamp or oven a little too long. The pinot noir paired choice was superb."

  • "This restaurant is where we often celebrate special occasions. Recently, we had an excellent dinner for a birthday. It began with a cold terreine for one and an artichoke salad for the other. The main dishes were a combination lamb dish and a salmon with ravioli and sauce. Dessert was very special with a melon pastry and a chocolate mousse. Each dish was beautifully prepared and presented. The restaurant is quiet and intimate. We recommend it highly. It is expensive, however, but worth it."

  • "Once again, the cuisine and service at the Refectory wowed us! Superb wine parings with each course. The lamb combo was outstanding and the sea bass was extremely flavorful. For those who enjoy fine dining and food prepared with such care - this is the place to enjoy."

  • "My wife and I went there for our 5 Wedding Anniversary and without a doubt had one of the best meals every. Our server (Steve) was fantastic! The food was fabulous, the timing was just right for the service of each dish. It was pricy, but worth every penny spent!"

  • "We celebrated our anniversary at The Refectory, which was recommended for a special occasion. We were very pleased with the service and enjoyed the unique food choices. I especially loved the mussel soup - outstanding. We were seated in the old church which was beautiful with the stained glass windows."

  • "Great and sincere attention paid by all staff to assure that 50th anniversary was enjoyable and memorable. Wait staff attentive throughout the meal; Kamal was gracious both at arrival and our departure. As always the food was properly prepared, delicious and served hot and fresh from the kitchen. Reliable!"

  • "The Refectory's menu is SO filled with wonderful choices that it's always difficult to decide what to order. But every First Friday of the month, Chef Richard puts together a special prix fixe menu of items not on the regular menu. The restaurant always posts the menu in advance online, so we have the fun of anticipating what we'll be eating. The great thing is that we don't have agonize over what to order, because it's all pre-determined. And it's all wonderful. Creative cuisine, expertly prepared and artfully presented. And it's a great bargain at only $55 per person, too! There's an option to add on 4 specially selected wines to complement the 4 courses, which makes the whole evening even more fun. We've never been disappointed!"

  • "My wife and I hadn't been to The Refectory for several years, but we went for an anniversary dinner a few days ago. It was a great experience in all respects. The menu was extremely interesting, making the decision of what to order difficult. The food was terrific and the service was as good as restaurant service can be: personal, attentive, but never intrusive."

  • "We visited The Refectory for my daughter's 15th birthday, and it was really a great experience. The food -- as always -- was outstanding. Consistently probably the best kitchen in central Ohio. But the service was great as well. The front of the house staff are outstanding, and then they and the Chef go out of the way with some extra little surprises. (This time it was mesclun salads, compliments of the chef -- which were wonderful, of course.) All in all, my daughter really enjoyed her birthday, and I think I'll bring the family back to celebrate my birthday in November."

  • "Dining by myself with my wife out of town, the staff made the evening special. The First Friday menu was superb. Each dish - terrine, soup, veal, and dessert - unlike similar tasted previously on the menu. The grated carrot an unusual, tasty and surprising addition to the mussel soup. Veal medallions very flavorful. Dessert light and appropriate. The terrines may be the Chef's forte'. Let me add how the service made a single-for -the-weekend feel comfortable and at home, relaxed. The wine pairings were thoughtful and appropriate. For fine dining in this city why go elsewhere?"

  • "We have been to The Refrectory 3 times. We tend to save it for really special occasions because it is a special experience. Michelle was our server this time and she was excellent. She also was our server last year when my whole family ate here for my birthday. It was an exceptional experience then too. Michelle did an excellent job explaining everything and my children, both somewhat picky eaters, tried all kinds of new foods. It was a wonderful night. This year it was just my husband and I for our anniversary, as it was a few years ago too. We had another wonderful meal. Thank you."

  • "Our favorite restaurant in Columbus simply never disappoints. We had dinner with two friends who are very critical foodies and they were totally awed by their meals and the excellent service. They also went out of their way to provide one diner with gluten-free bread and changes to the main course. The salmon entree was beautiful as well as delicious, one diner had the walleye and said it was outstanding. My husband and I had the soft-shell crab entree because it is only available for a few weeks in June & it was excellent. Caesar salads all around... excellent. Their crusty bread from Cleveland is fabulous. Decanting the red wine over a flame at table-side was a nice touch. Too full to try their wonderful desserts. "

  • "As regular customers, we are used to a fine dining experience at the Refectory, but our most recent evening set a new standard for excellence in food and service. An appropriately seasoned and subtle asparagus soup began the evening. My wife and I agreed the soft shell crabs were the best we have ever eaten (including a long residence in MD); they were large, tasty, and no trace of oiliness which is often a problem elsewhere. The blueberry tart was gorgeous and tasty. A well chosen Chablis accompanied the meal perfectly. Service unrushed, attentive, and personal. "

  • "Wonderful choice for date night. The food was the best I've ever had and the service was amazing. The kitchen was running a bit slow but our server was so kind and friendly and even brought us a complimentary glass of wine and salad so the wait didn't bother us much. It was very very expensive but worth it since we don't get out much. "

  • "This is a converted church, which presents many options for decorating the dining areas. It is a visually soothing place that sets a mood upon first entering the property. Needless to say the food and service continue to enhance the dining experience. The refectory has been in operation for some time now, and it's not surprising That it has weathered the culinary storms over the years. It's a winner !!"

  • "We've lived in Columbus for more than 10 years and have always heard wonderful things about The Refectory. We finally made the trip ourselves and we weren't disappointed. Our entrees were all wonderful, just right in flavor, temperature, and size, and the presentations were beautiful. At the end of the meal our server even surprised us with a complimentary dessert and dessert wine tasting! The only reason we didn't give service 5 stars was because our server did seem a bit distracted throughout the evening, but she did have many tables."

  • "My wife and I dined with another couple on the patio. Our friends are from out of town, and this was their first visit to The Refectory. They were very impressed, as we knew they would be. The food is always outstanding, beautifully garnished and artfully arranged. It would be too pretty to eat, if it didn't taste so great. The patio is very pleasant on a nice evening: much less noisy than might be expected, given its proximity to Bethel Rd. Our attentive waiter realized early on that we were making an evening of it, and he thoughtfully paced our dinner to give us time to continue our visit between courses. The wine list is remarkable, offering many reasonably-priced choices for those not on an unlimited expense account. "

  • "Wife & I had a night away from kids and tried to squeeze dinner and a show into a very small time frame. Normally we like to eat a very relaxed pace but out of necessity we were forced to pick up the tempo. Restaurant accommodated our needs beautifully. Sat Bistro side, which I didn't enjoy as much due to ambiance, but still very enjoyable. They even gave as a quick dessert as we were finishing the last of our wine. Best overall restaurant in central Ohio, in my mind. "

  • "The food was absolutely outstanding. Deliciously cooked, artistically prepared, intelligently picked courses all lead to one of the best meals I've had in a decade. The chefs and waitresses take pride in their job and it showed. I definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a quiet, special occasion, and reasonably priced 5 star meal (expect to pay 50-75/person for all courses/drinks)."

  • "I had bought my girlfriend a ring about a year ago and was thinking of the right way to propose. I told the staff this while in the lobby as I secretly escaped to the bathroom for ten minutes and they were excited to help me come up with a plan. In between dinner and dessert the owner brought out something I'd made on a tray hidden underneath a napkin. Another girl that worked there videotaped my proposal on my phone for me. We are now engaged and we'll be going back every year on our engagement day to celebrate. Food was superb. Hospitality was first class. This truly was a dining experience at it's finest."

  • "We eat at the Refectory often and are never disappointed. The ambiance is exeptional. The staff and service is always first class. The food is consistently the best I've ever eaten. Chef's daily specials as well as special event menus such as 1st Friday, are aways a good choice, as is anything on the menu. The cost may be considered pricey, but you get what you pay for, and it is worth every penny. "
