  • Food is good when it finally arrives
    OpenTable Diner Since 2008VIP

The Refectory seems to subscribe to the outdated notion that at certain price points, diners should feel grateful to be allowed to dine at their establishment. Despite having a reservation, we had a long wait for our table. Given the number of other parties seated in the waiting area, this is clearly the norm and was a sign of what was to come. Everything took too long: getting menus, ordering, getting our appetizers, etc. It was over 90 minutes from the time we arrived to get our entrees, which were cold. We should note that the restaurant handled that situation very well and attentively. There were some highlights to the evening and it all had to do with the food. The chef is French after all, so the soups and sauces are excellent. The highlight of the evening was the creme brulee, which was probably the best we have ever had. Exactly the right sweetness, vanilla and consistency with the right amount of bruleed sugar. Unfortunately, the overall experience was so bizarre that we probably will not be back.

The Refrectory has been our special restaurant for the past thirty years. During that time, we have been very fortunate to experience many memorable dining experiences in our travels throughout the United States and abroad. Even after all those very positive experiences, the Refrectory remains the restaurant that we choose to celebrate our special occasions. The one and one-half hour travel time for us to visit the Refrectory is rewarded by the quality of the food, service and ambiance that we know awaits us when we arrive. The menu selection is extensive with entrees of beef, pork, bison, duck, lamb, seafood...all of which we have sampled and found delicious. The Refrectory will continue to be our restaurant of first choice.

Our waiter was so great! He reminded me of Matthew Broderick in the most wonderful way. He whispered the Browns-Bengals score to me as he walked by our table, and after he very professionally explained the pate, he added that it's the best meatloaf we'll ever have. It was really nice that he was personable because we don't go to such high-end places often, and he made us feel very welcome.

Beautiful French-inspired cuisine means average to smaller portions artistically prepared and presented. Esgargot terrine unique. Wines are extensive and not priced beyond reason. Free "percs" add to enjoyment. Overall, I've not eaten anywhere better in Columbus and would recommend highly for a sophisticated dining experience.

The Refectory was a great place to dine 15 years ago and hasn't missed a beat. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal, our cocktails and the service. The goat cheese appetizer has the creamiest goat cheese I've ever had, the tuna sashimi melted in your mouth, my scallops were seared perfectly (and didn't have a grain of sand) and the Caesar salad was perfect as well. I can think of nothing to criticize at all. The restaurant is gorgeous with all the ambiance of an old church. Having had many disappointing dining experiences in expensive restaurants, I am happy to say the Refectory is a gem and it will not take us 15 years to return this time.

Recent anniversary celebration dinner. Waiter and service were attentive, however my wife ordered a Caesar Salad and the romaine used was old, looked like it may have been fresh a week earlier. When this was brought to the attention of the waiter, his only comment was that he was sorry to hear that, not "I will take it off your check or something like that" The entrees were average to good but certainly not a good value for the money spent.

My wife and I had dinner at the refectory and as usual it was a perfect evening. The atmosphere and interior décor is elegant. The pace was not rushed, the service was perfect. The waiter was very helpful about wine offerings and interacted with us in positive way during our meal. The food was perfect and creative. We very much appreciate the use of local and seasonal offerings in the dishes. The only regret is that we live in northeast Ohio and only make it to Columbus once or twice a year. Wish you were closer!

A perfect dinner to celebrate the birthdays of two friends. A quiet table in a divided section of the beautiful dining room. A mention of gluten allergies to our waiter resulted in delicious gluten-free bread being brought to those who couldn't have the wonderful multi-grain bread for others. Fine choice of wines and seasonal dishes. Highly professional service - so rare today! A wonderful environment to let us catch up with good friends making it a a totally special evening.

This is the most romantic restaurant in Columbus, perfect for special occasions. It has the best food and wine list in Columbus. Everything here is impeccable, from the service to the presentation of the food. The wine list is extensive with a very nice selection of carefully selected wines by the glass. The menu is eclectic french and everything is prepared to perfection. Our evening began with some of the best multigrain bread that we have tasted in a while. We had the seasonal soup and a special seafood pate appetizer that was wonderful. We then had duck breast and a bison flat iron steak that were prepared to perfection. This is one of the few restaurants where we leave room for dessert. We are never disappointed.

My partner's favorite restaurant, so it was a must for her birthday (a Wednesday). I'm a tough critic, but would say this was the best meal I have had here, and our best restaurant meal in at least 6 months. We saved a bit by ordering one prix fixe and one a la carte. Delicious cold appetizers (alpaca terrine; goat cheese & beets); perfectly executed entrees (salmon "chop;" and Cajun duck breast) and the pear tart is to die for, combined with pistachio gelato ... and certainly can serve two. Touraine sauv blanc, l'Ecple 41 Semillon and Helms Rd (Wash St) Merlot all great pours, though a tad pricey at $9-10 /glass. Reasonable price/quality. Special birthday treatment. GO! NOW!

The dinner was great and the wine was outstanding. We had a very nice evening for my wifes birthday which they made a very special evening. They commented on it twice and brought a free dessert which I did not expect. The service was very low pressure and made our evening very enjoyable, I thought the food was very good and well presented. We don't get to go out to nice establishments very often but the Refectory made it worth it.

My wife and I visited for the first time and were immediately impressed! The host and hostess were pleasant, the servers were enthusiastic and carimg, and the food was spectacular. The only, and very slight, drawback was toward the end of dinner the waiter took quite a while to bring the check so we could pay and head home. Again, very very slight misstep considering how great they were for 1.75 hours of a 2 hour dinner. I would highly recommend visiting there and look forward to our next dining experience.

I went with my fiancé and parents to celebrate our engagement. The service was everything it should be: friendly, knowledgeable, courteous, professional, etc. My parents love wine and were impressed with the wine list and liked the waiter's suggestions. And of course the food was wonderful, fit for any foodie. I had the chicken with the pan seared foie gras. My mother had the duck and the men had the beef tenderloin. Everything was cooked perfectly. To help us celebrate the chef sent out a special between courses sorbet and a small dessert. In addition to the complementary dessert I also mentioned seeing a dessert online that wasn't on the current menu and they made it for me anyway. I recommend highly.

First off, we loved our experience and our server Joseph was extra attentive and knowledgeable about the wines and food. The pairings and choices he suggested were excellent. We sat in the bistro. The stained glass lends itself to a cozy and intimate vibe. It suits the mostly older clientele there. We seemed to be the youngest and we are no spring chickens. It's not vibrant or "cool" but maybe that's why people call it "romantic"--though we thought it reminded us of a had a nice hotel restaurant. My flank steak was great and my partner enjoyed her wolf fish. She had the sushi app upgrade which was generous and subtle. I had the seafood pastry which was delicious. Not inventive but definitely seemed reliably prepared. We will be back.
