Diner Reviews
  • "You'll find an extensive wine menu and wait staff who can make good suggestions on matching you meal with the proper wine. Food is gourmet and attractively presented."

  • "We dined at the Refectory for our first formal/nice dinner. The service was impeccable, and the good was to be remembered for years. I have requested a special romantic table in the comment/request section in Opentable.com and they did accomodate us with a table that had the perfect light, distance to others. The food was superb. I have not experienced real fancy food much in my life. However, this was a new experience for me and I did not think the price was too high at all for the unique flavorful dishes. If things go well, I'm pretty sure my girlfriend and I will dine here again."

  • "I absolutely love dining at the Refectory! The staff and owner are very accommodating and make it their priority that you have a wonderful experience. Most recently I took my parents here and wanted to be seated in a quiet spot because my dad has trouble hearing sometimes. When making my reservation, I requested a quiet spot, and I was so pleased when the owner acknowledged my request when we checked in by saying he had a table for us in a quiet area. As always, the food was outstanding. My favorites are the warm goat cheese appetizer, the seasonal roasted tomato and corn soup, salmon, lamb, beef tenderloin, tiramisu, and crème brulee. My favorite wine is the chef's cousin's Brouilly."

  • "Cuisine and service were exceptionally good. Although consistently operating at a very high level, our meals and service were even better than normal. Many thanks to Michelle and the waitstaff team for superior service. Our compliments to the chef for the beautifully prepared whole European Sea Bass and also the Duck Breast entrees."

  • "One of the best restaurants I have ever eaten at. The server, Stephen, was informative, personable and interesting"

  • "To the average person, taking a visit to The Refectory calls for a special event, and rightfully so. Like the setting sun over the Pacific Ocean, the refectory is a beautiful spot to take a date with exceptional staff that demonstrate utmost professionalism and knowledge about the food preparation process. If you want to woo your special someone, take them to The Refectory. In hindsight, the big check is a small price to pay for such a unique and classy experience."

  • "what has been my favorite restaurant was not the exceptional food it had been. Of the 3 dishes , one was served cold, one was the wrong dish, and the third- duck- was exceptional. Desserts are phenomenal and excellent service. Pretty pricy"

  • "Generic reviews aside, I knew very little about The Refectory before making a reservation. It was for our first anniversary and my wife is pregnant with our first baby. I made both of these facts known in the special request section when booking on OpenTable. The staff could not have been more accommodating. We received congratulations from multiple staff members and a very nice "mocktail" was provided for my wife. We both felt very special. Needless to say, the meal was amazing and our experience there was perfect. I could see this being a place I will frequent for special occasions."

  • "We were very happy with our meals and the soup special- green lentil was awesome! Would have liked to had a steak knife with my beef tenderloin. It was perfectly cooked and did cut with a regular knife but took a bit more effort. The scallops my husband had were outstanding and perfectly prepared. Overall was an extremely good meal."

  • "Whether dining in the bistro, dining room or choir loft, the food and service are rarely less than exemplary. The greeting from Kamal, Jeff, or other, is always welcoming, to new patrons as well as regulars."

  • "Brought some friends from West Coast to show off one of Columbus's best bets. The outstanding wine list continues to impress--I enjoy just reading through it! We were impressed with the level of knowledgable service--particulary with the pairing suggestions. Menu provides great selection including single plate variety or multi-course options; with the food itself both well presented and prepared. West Coast friends has nothing but good things to say. Glad to know Columbus continues to have a such a fantastic destination for food and wine that can compete with the best in the biggest cities."

  • "We were greeted when we first came in, in a timely manner. We were seated, ordered drinks, mine was superb, wife hated hers. Service, was fair but felt looked down on, Then the wait... for food, which was ok.. not great or worth the price. My wife says I cook a better filet on my grill. We finished our meal and waited 17 minutes for someone to ask if we wanted desert, we said no.. then after 10 minutes another waiter brings the desert menu... (don't they talk to each other) he lays it down then walks away... takes another 15 minutes before he comes back for us to tell him what we told the other one.. nom we do not want desert... we are now out of time for a movie we were going to see. Thank you for your time, but we will not be returning."

  • "The Refectory really went out of their way to make our dinner outstanding. We celebrated our daughter's engagement there and the waiter, even the owner, all did their best to make it special. Food and service of course were outstanding as always. Thank you Kamal."

  • "We went here for the first time ever and mentioned on our OpenTable reservation that it was my birthday. The staff said happy birthday from the moment we entered the restaurant and even added a birthday candle to my dessert. They went out of their way to make sure I had a great birthday and I appreciate that so much. The food was EXCELLENT. We ate the escargot, veal, filet... everything was outstanding. The presentation of the food was just on a whole other level. There is no better place to eat in Columbus for a special occasion."

  • "Took my parents there for their 50th wedding anniversary. They commented that it was the nicest place they had ever eaten. The service was excellent as always and the food was delicious."

  • "The Refectory is located in an old church so the ambiance is unique. The food selections are plentiful and a gluten free menu is available. My choice was delicious and attractively presented. I could not have requested better service. The Refectory is definitely a five star restaurant."

  • "I finally made it to the Refectory for dinner.....and all the praise I have heard over the food and service were well founded. Our server, Michelle, was knowledgeable, gracious and very warm. She was a great ambassador for the restaurant. Both me and my date had four courses....all delicious and well prepared. I had the fish special (grouper) and my date had veal....both were exceptional. And if you stay for dessert try the pear tart - perfect and not too sweet. I really love the history of the building and the vaulted ceiling and stained glass in the dining room are great. But the decor was a distraction. While tasteful, the wall and floor coverings, light fixtures and upholstery were just tired and worn. Update needed to design."

  • "The accommodation to the table request was granted, the food was exquisite, the service could not be improved upon, and I scored points with my wife for taking her there for her birthday!"

  • "We celebrated multiple events recently and this was the place to do it. Preparation and attention to detail is unsurpassed, the taste and aroma is sublime and the service, both in knowledge and attentiveness, was great."

  • "Stopped by on the last day of restaurant week. A nice selection of offerings for each course was available. The goat cheese appetizer was a nighlight of the evening. The pork in the bacon sauce was delicious, and the beef dish was also enjoyed. We always look forward to dining at The Refectory!"

  • "First time at your place primarily because we live in Pickerington and our busy lives keep us local. However, we enjoyed the Refectory so much we will be back, and are telling our friends wonderful the food and staff were. Al and Kathy C."

  • "Did the restaurant week prix fixe menu. Service was impeccable and food presentation was excellent. Food itself was not out of this world good, but well-prepared. My wife had the roast chicken and what I ate of hers was overly salted. The pork chop I had was excellent, as was the tiramisu. A bit expensive for what you are actually getting though."

  • "We had decided to try The Refectory after receiving a much hyped review from friends. We arrived and were immediately introduced to the menu. We started off with a round of cocktails and appetizers, then got a bottle of wine and our main course, and finally finished off with dessert. The food was delicious (exactly what I would expect from a four star restaurant), but the true pleasure of dining here was the service. The wait staff was quick, knowledgeable, and highly recommended. We never had a dry glass, and got to try lots of different wines. In particular, for dessert, our server brought us a few samples of Asti which paired perfectly; something we would not have known to order. He made it a true food tasting experience."

  • "Most the food was fantastic. However, they switched the side on one dish to something very plain, with no sauce. Did not receive adequate response. Also, was not told at time of ordering"

  • "This is my fourth dining experience at The Refectory. This is the second time to have Justin as my waiter. He is a talented, knowledgable, impeccable waiter who made the evening perfect. The food and wine are amazing. The atmosphere is unique and beautiful. The Refectory is truly a dining experience."

  • "The food at the Refectory is usually excellent but on this occasion (7/24) it was extremely salty and mediocre. Even though it was early in the evening 1 chosen appetizer and 1 chosen dessert were not available. Service was great as usual. I have had better here but may have been an off night?"

  • "My Husband and I have always wanted to dine at The Refectory, however we have a VERY modest income. The Restaurant Week prix fix menu was well within our budget, and we began our dining experience with the idea that we may get discounted service as well. We were pleasantly surprised!!!! Our service was incredible- of the highest quality! The first course was beautiful, aromatic and thoughtful. Our entree was filling and elegant. And deserts and drinks were divine !!! We even received complementary glasses of wine ! We HIGHLY recommend The Refectory for it's elegance, service, but mostly for the delectable art created by the chef! Worth every hard earned dollar and then some!"

  • "Appetizers Roasted Goat Cheese - Excellent! I would go again just to have two of these! Crab Pannequet - Good. Though most crab cakes are good. Entrees Salmon and Lobster Ravioli - Awful. The salmon was seared on the outside and raw on the inside. Not opaque - raw - like sushi. However, the quality of the fish was very good - sushi grade, in fact. The single ravioli on the plate was not lobster at all. It may have been mushroom. The entire dish was cold. Baby Rack of Lamb (ordered medium rare) - "Meh" Thin, overcooked and chewy. Again, the dish was cold. Deserts - like anywhere else, but smaller. "Been there, done that" list. Overrated and expensive. I MAY go back for wine and appetizers, but not for dinner."

  • "I have never been to the Refectory before but have heard only great things. So, for my boyfriends birthday/brothers going away dinner we decided the perfect fit would to celebrate both at one of the most beautiful restaurants in Columbus, Ohio. The service, from the moment we walked into the restaurant, was divine. The ambiance was elegant, it made even a dinner with the man I love and my entire family romantic. The food was exquisite, we decided to do the restaurant week menu, and all ordered something different, we planned it so we would take a bite or two of our own and then pass it around the table. EVERYTHING was just amazing. The wine list was impeccable, I wanted to try it all. It was definitely a night to remember forever."

  • "This was the best dining experience I have ever had. The waiter (Justin) was fabulous, knowledgable and entertaining in a subdued way. The wine list was amazing with a variety of prices. We ordered both a red and a white. All entrees were exceptionally plated and tasted wonderful. We passed bites around the table. The desserts were like the entrees exceptionally plated, fabulous tasting and shared by all!"

  • "The Refectory is one of our favorite French restaurant...it makes me feel like I'm in Paris :) We went on restaurant week for the food banks. We was not disappointed with the service or our meals....it was fantastic!!! We had creme brûlée and it was perfect!!!! We will be heading back soon:) Great job to all the staff:)"

  • "We have never been disappointed by the Refectory. We went for Restaurant Week and it was a great reminder of how exceptional their food and service really is. We'll be going back again soon and have moved it to the top of the list for our special occasions. This is what haute cuisine is meant to be!"

  • "We had a very good dining experience, thanks to our waiter, Joseph. He suggested wine pairings, if we did not want full glass. It was a wonderful idea and we thought the 2 ounce glasses, per course, were great. I observed my wife sitting back, and her fork on her plate. Thinking something was wrong, I asked about her salmon. She said it was delicious and that she was just enjoying the taste between bites. My sea scallops were delicious as well. I am not a dessert person, but the warmed pear tart was excellent. The Refectory was well worth our 20+ year wait."

  • "Food was really good, but not exceptional (I arrived with high expectations), and a bit expensive. The place is quiet, romantic and comfortable. Great for a date or special occasion. Service was great. I won´t become a frequent costumer due to the price, but I´ll probably be back."

  • "The Refectory is your classic French dining experience; delicious small plates bursting with flavor, with lengthy intervals between each. I can't say enough about their scallops, most definitely the best I have had. Their wine list is extensive, and the staff very knowledgeable about each. If you are in the mood for a three hour dinner, consisting of top quality food, I highly recommend the Refectory. If you are looking for a large plate in short order, I would suggest finding an alternative venue."
