  • Excellent Service! Excellent Food!

The service was excellent. However it was obviously a slow night at the restaurant and I had reservations indicating that I needed a quiet table for two for a dinner meeting with a colleague. I was quite surprised given the option of many open tables when a group vigorously celebrating a birthday was seated across from us making it difficult to talk without interruptions periodically. The view of the Harbor area and Long Beach across the Bay is breathtaking and it was a clear night.

I made reservations open table and asked for outdoor seating Got there checked in and was told about 15 mins Was called about 10 mins later and led to a inside middle table When reminded of my reservation request I was advised not available and that she had mp clue of when it would be avail As she walked away I asked about window seating and she again said no clue My question is what happened to customer service(out to sea) and what happened to the special request made in my reservation She acted as if she did not have a clue of my request until I mentioned it to her Will think twice about reservations at the Reef and even then will call to follow up on special request

We sat in Auggie's section of the restaurant. And the service was "horrible"!! (You'd have to go experience it to understand that inside joke). He was a dynamic personality, very interactive and timely. He kept our champagne flutes filled and was extremely attentive. If his section is full... Wait... It will be worth it. The Reef itself is home to wonderful food and service. I've never had a problem there, from valet to paying the bill. The food is delicious (and I'm not crazy about seafood, go figure!) but overall, it was a wonderful experience.

We did have a little difficulty finding the Reef. But once we got there the experience was incredible. While waiting for our party to arrive I enjoyed a refreshing white sangria filled with lush California produce. When we were seated, we didn't know whether to stare at the plates of food the other guests ordered or the lights of the city glimmering over the ocean. The complementary bread was served with a great Rosemary spread. Nice touch. Our party stuck primarily with their seafood options, passing around our plates, exchanging bites. Everyone was more that satisfied with their choices. Overall, I would rate the place strong to very strong on all accounts.

My husband and I have eaten here several times for special occasions. We love the beautiful view of the Long Beach harbor and city lights. This time we sat in one of the cozy booths inside, but also enjoy eating on the nice patio outside with the same gorgeous view. The food is very good and the servers are friendly. I highly recommend it for special occasions!

  • DISAPPOINTED
    OpenTable Diner Since 2009
    Dined on 8/25/2012
Our table was located in the path of constant flow of people in and out of a wedding. Everytime the door opened we could hear the very loud party and again the constant flow of people in and out. Highly disappointed that the music did not support the Hawaiian/Tropical theme of The Reef. Neither the servers nor the attire enhanced what should have been a relaxing and retreat like atmosphere. Food was boring and my Creme Brulee was burnt on top. Sorry, but I must say that I liked the place better before it burned down.

Great location, amazing service but the food is not as good as I remember. If prices are going to be as high as they are I would expect for the food to also be as good. This isn't my first time there, which is why I was surprised that the food was not up to par. I don't remember it being so bad. Get better chefs!

I think the host didn't even knew my request she ask us if we want sit outside or inside, I feel bad with my wife experience.

Expected better quality of food as compared to other brunch's in the area. Service was fun but slow. My Champagne glass remained empty too long during brunch. It took the wait staff a long time to clear used plates from the table. The scenery and beautiful setting was first rate.

    Dined on 8/17/2012
The Reef is the epitome of meets expectations. The food is good, not great. The service is good, not great. I took a client and old friend to dinner here and was embarrassed by the stuffing coming out of the couch in the lounge as well as the garbage on the floor, i.e. A candy wrapper, napkins, and stirs. The view is great but if that isn't the most important aspect of your dining experience, I can recommend at least five other restaurants in downtown Long Beach that offer better food, service, and ambiance.

The atmosphere at the Reef is romantic, the lights are dim so you can see the city lights across the bay, butnot too dark that you can't see your food. Dress can be casual to very dressy. Food was good, but not spectacular. I had the blackened swordfish, and my sister had the steak which was better tasting. The service was great. Celebrated my mom's birthday here at 5pm on a Tuesday.... The place was empty. We ordered half of the Happy Hour appetizers, all of which were delicious hearty portions. The fish & chips and seafood salad were good too. Specialty drinks were surprisingly well priced ($8-10) and well made. Scenery was amazing also. My only complaint is in regards to the hostess at the front. As an event coordinator for weddings, I wanted to look at the facilities upstairs. She blatantly told me it was closed and I couldn't. Bad customer service; I could be a potential client or bring clients and she blew me off even though they were still empty.

The food was very good, I had salmon (wonderful). My dinner companion had mahi and said that was also very tasty. We were seated in a booth with a nice view of the water and hoped to enjoy that at sunset. However,to our dismay, there was a private party about to get started. A sweet sixteen. It sounded like a very loud nightclub. Teenagers walked back and forth thru the dining area to either use the facilities or to chat on their cell phones. The music was so loud that it completely drowned out any conversation we were having. On the good side, the wait staff were very kind to move us to a table a bit farther away. It was a disappointing situation.

The food was great. The service was pretty good. Would have liked to see our waiter (or somebody) a couple of times more than we did for things such as water refills. And I guess the only real complaint was that a drink I ordered at the beginning of the meal never came (and I didn't see my waiter to remind him about it) but it still showed up on the check. We got it straightened out in the end. We will hopefully be back.

There were 2 of us and we were placed at a side table in a small room with 1 very large party and another not quite so large party. They did not have enough seatings for the largest party so they brought more tables and took extra chairs from other tables, including ours. The food was ok but not worth the price, especially because I'm sure the "great" views of the harbor were worked into the food prices and we did not have a particularly good view and we had lots of noise from the large parties. Oh, and we both experienced some gastric problem a while after the meal.

Decor has aged and not been well maintained. Steak was not cooked to order and one entree did not arrive until all others in the party were half done. We had a party of 8 and when I booked the reservation, I explained my guests were all from a different country visiting for a conference and we would like a nice view. We were given a table in the middle of the room when the restaurant was only 1/2 full. None of my visitors wish to eat their again.
