  • "I've been to The Red Onion many times and never once been disappointed. The food is consistently excellent. The service is prefect. The ambience is warm and inviting. The one thing I'm not crazy about is the lighting. It's often too dark to read the menu. They should have little flashlights at each table. All in all, if you want great food in Woodstock, don't miss this terrific restaurant."

  • "Four friends dining together, several for the first time at The Red Onion, enjoyed a delicious meal and an all-around wonderful dining experience. The menu is creative and each person ordered a different entree. Everyone enjoyed her selection and said they would like to return. We sampled appetizers, salads and main courses and each item was prepared attractively and was equally delicious. It was a busy Saturday night. We were seated in the middle of the main room and the waiters were a bit cramped for space and my chair was bumped from behind a few times but the staff was courteous and friendly. This is one of my go-to restaurants when I want to take friends out to dinner in the Woodstock, NY area."

  • "We couldn't have had a better night. The staff was warm and welcoming, even after we arrived late for our reservation. After describing our harrowing ride on a winding road (optional - our mistake) through sleeting rain, the host handed us 2 glasses of champagne and our stress melted away. We were nestled into a cozy corner table in the front of the restaurant by the bar, which was busy but not loud. The ochre walls w/ cool photos lend to a great vibe. The food is creative and delicious. Not pretentious, just really fine fare and an excellent wine list. We even found a favorite Pinot in a half bottle! (perfect considering we had to make that drive back). The service was attentive and highly professional. We will be back!"

  • "Food was generally good. The tables were very close together. So much so that one could hardly get in and out of one's seat without bumping into the next table or clearly hearing your neighbor's conversations. The service was generally courteous but slow. Our three course meal of a single shared appetizer between the two of us, our main courses, and desert took over three hours. The waiter who brought us our soup appetizer forgot to provide us with spoons. I asked for spoons and he never returned. After 5 minutes I had to flag down the maitre d' to provide us with the spoons. For the kind of prices they charge, we would have expected better service and a little more space between tables."

  • "What a delightful evening, from an excellent gin and tonic that made it feel like summertime despite the two feet of snow outside, to the best Caesar's salad I've ever had, and a lovely comforting roast chicken with mashed potatoes and carrots: perfect on a winter night.   • "Another wonderful meal. Our third visit to this gem outside Woodstock and once again we found it warm, friendly and had fantastic meals. The steak frites has an herb butter that does the near impossible; improves 'Butter'. Perhaps it was due to it being Valentine's Day but the chef was very generous and sent out complimentary desserts (1st some killer truffles and then a panna cotta that rocked.)"

  • "My husband and I live around the corner from the Red Onio but, in 2 years, hadn't been there. Now I wish we hadn't waited so long! From the moment we walked in, I knew I would love the place. The wait staff was attentive yet not overbearing. Everything we had to eat was absolutely delicious, our drinks were perfect, and dessert was to do for! We definitely plan on going back sometime (hopefully soon!). A great find in Saugerties!"

  • "10 minutes off the NYS Thruway, Red Onion is a quaint, upscale hideaway good enough for foodies with time to relax after a long day on the mountain. The food ranges from simplicities like hamburger and French fries to escargot and scollops all prepared with the elegance of a fine NYC eatery. The food is equalled by the ambiance however with room for improvement in a sometimes overwhelmed service staff. High ratings and definately worth the trip."

  • "We sat at a table near the bar, which was a nice fairly quiet background noise that was not a problem. Our food (the braised short ribs and sauteed calves liver) were cooked perfectly and flavored nicely. We split the pierogi appetizer, which was small for splitting, but very good and didn't spoil our appetite. The tiramisu for dessert was outstanding, and the house-made cookies plate could have easily been shared, very generous. Not to forget our waitress, a woman originally from Hungary, who was always there when we wanted her, and not when we were fine, even to giving us the check and processing it in a timely manner."

  • "We had a nice meal at Red Onion on Sat. night. The salads (beet and arugula) were large and tasty. My husband had the sardines and he loved them. My friend had the ragu pasta, also quite good. My dish, the Thai style mussels were excellent. The escarole w/garlic was excellent. Our only complaint is that we waited for 30 minutes despite having a reservation."

  • "In every way The Red Onion was a terrific place to go for dinner. Our table of 5 shared numerous appetizers, all distinct and excellent and everyone's dinner was terrific. Portions were perfect. We left felling fully satisfied but not stuffed, usually the result of good food made with fresh ingredients and light sauces. Service was quick but we never felt rushed. 5 stars in every way."

  • "We haven't been there for awhile.When we had returned for Dinner it was Amazing. We were greeted at the door ,seated almost instantly. O.K. ...fine food came steady,very freesh,and perfect temp. As we were chatting we think it was the owner or maybe the host he asked if everything was O.K....We said yes. Main course arrived perfect timing was excellent.Dinner arrived was excellent.Dessert was superb.We are a little fussy with food ,BUT WE ENJOYED OUR WHOLE MEAL . The only problem we found VERY ANNOYING ,WAS THE LIGHTING ..IT IS VERY LOW AND IT IS DIFFICULT TO READ THE WINE LIST AND MENU.When bill arrived it WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO READ THAT...VERY."

  • "It's always chancy going to a restaurant on New Year's Eve, but this experience was great. Very professional service, delicious food, good choices, and an upbeat yet still sane vibe. The only tiny, tiny glitch was that the menu promised an amuse bouche, but the first course arrived without it. However, when I mentioned this, the waitress brought it after the first course, which was fine. Actually, the amuse bouche was fantastic, a smoked salmon tartare-like yumminess, so we were happy to have not missed it. All in all, a delicious meal and a lovely experience."

  • "We were so happy to eat at The Red Onion again. It is our favorite place in the Woodstock area. The food and atmosphere fits our style - informal with great, creative food. We started with the roasted mussels, followed by the pork chop/creamed parsnips/kale and lamb/potato/minted peas entrees. Delicious! The staff is knowledgeable and friendly and not overbearing. Our only complaint was that the lesser staff might have been a bit aggressive, wanting to take our cocktail glasses and plates away before we were ready."

From appetizer of stone hot mussels and Sancerre wine we drank with it to the beautifully cooked liver and balsamic onions, or truffled raviolior the homey chicken or excellent fish and chips .everyone was pleased with their choice...portions are right. And although no one felt like having desert six spons for a taste of the apple crisp with vanilla ice cream finished the evening nicely."
