The Red House RestaurantClassic New EnglandGreat good and service every time we go. The small private dining rooms are really wonderful for small groups for groups as small as 6.5/14/2013 12:00:00 AMSomewhat disappointing this timeWe usually like the Red House; it has a warm atmosphere, and the noise level is not too high. The staff is friendly and attentive but not overbearing. The beet salad and the kale salad were great, and the scallops appetizer was delicious; the Vietnamese spring roll consisted largely of chopped carrots and was not particularly interesting. The seafood special entree was delicious, but the stuffed pork loin was a failure; the pork was dried out and tough, and the sausage stuffing couldn't make up for it. We'll probably give the place another chance in the future, though.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMMy kind of place.Loved the menu, loved the level of elegance--still homey.
Some of the food just missed being great.
Still, I'd go again.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMDelightful Tex Mex PopUp-Red HouseWe dined at Red House during the monthlong April pop-up restaurant serving Tex Mex by chef Amanda. Terrific food, great vibe, and fun to have the chef stop by and ask us about every course. There's only one Monday left in April, so we're coming back! Please have chef Amanda come again soon!4/22/2013 12:00:00 AMlovely eveningalways a good experience at The Red House. Good food, good atmosphere and good service.4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMLoved it!!Altho I live in Cambridge, The Red House had somehow escaped my attention. I loved the (typically Cambridge) casual, funky ambience. The menu had some wonderful and unusual choices, it was difficult to select. The food was excellent, I got swordfish and it was tender, mild and juicy. The waitstaff were super nice and attentive. My dinner companion was 40 minutes late and they made me feel welcome and un-pressured as I waited, seated, munching on bread etc and sipping wine.4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMIt was nice to be able toIt was nice to be able to order one of two sizes of certain entrees.4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMRomantic dinner spotMy companion and I had a charming table in the small front room, and the only thing that would have made it more charming would have been if the fire had been lit and the large party did not arrive towards the end of our dinner. How fun for them to have the room to themselves (as we did for a while). The food was very good. We shared a couple of apps and the half portions of our entrees were quite large. I love places that have great food and offer half portions! My companion is from England and we both agreed that only in America would that be considered a "half" portion!
The bar area looks like great fun, and the fireplace in there was lit. It looked lively but not too much so. Another reason I'll have to go back.4/12/2013 12:00:00 AMWhat I love about this restaurantWhat I love about this restaurant is that you can get half portions of many of the entrees; these are quite adequate in size, especially if you plan on having an appetizer and/or dessert. I had the duck and was asked how I wanted it cooked; my friend had the swordfish. Both were excellent as was the kale salad that we shared. Cocktails were yummy. Dessert choices were good. The main room was hosting a large party, and even on a weeknight (Wednesday), the room was completely full, so the noise level was a little high, though not overwhelmingly so. Reservations recommended! The Red House is in the heart of Harvard Square, but just off the beaten path. It is, as it says, an actual house that has for many years been a restaurant.4/3/2013 12:00:00 AMFood was excellent. EndedFood was excellent. Ended up trying multiple things as appetizer sizes, to have a variety. Everything was delicious.
Service very good, although the waiter did forget my drink til end of meal.
Tables are too close together, made for a bit uncomfortable romantic evening. Felt cramped between two larger parties.
But overall, is was a very nice dinner.3/30/2013 12:00:00 AMAlthough full, noise was notAlthough full, noise was not too bad. Food varied from good to out of this world great (particulary the lobster chowder). Ambience was very nice, bar has a wood fire (only place in Cambridge) and a dining room with a skylight. We had a table under the large skylight, which was very pleasant.3/29/2013 12:00:00 AMA wonderful dinner for dateA wonderful dinner for date night with my husband.3/16/2013 12:00:00 AMHad made lunch reservationsHad made lunch reservations prior to attending matinee at A.R.T. When we arrived we were warmly welcomed and it was noted that we wanted to be out in advance of curtain. Our waiter was informed and while he did not hover he was aware of our time and served us most efficiently...but never with a sense of rushing us. Really appreciated the fact that the menu entres allowed us to order appetizer portions. Perfect for lunch! Experience was delightful, food was delicious and soon even our waiter responded to the kidding and comments of three little old ladies in tennis shoes. Will return when next in Cambridge.3/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
