Diner Reviews
  • "The Red House is consistently excellent and the setting is perfect for those who like absolutely first-rate food but would rather avoid the large rooms that are the norm for most very special restaurants. There are several separate spaces in this old Cambridge home that make you feel like you're home, not in some institution. But oh the food is way beyond most homes! This has become the place of choice for small business lunches, romantic dinners, and family gatherings. The menu is eclectic enough for the vegan, vegetarian, kosher, and omnivore folks in my party on Monday. We ordered seven different dishes and each was perfectly flavored, prepared and presented. The Red House has been top-flight and consistent for years!"

  • "I've been to the Red House for lunch on several occasions and it was terrific - so was looking forward to trying it out for dinner. My guest and I were both disappointed. The kale and avocado soup was pretty bland; we were brought a wrong appetizer (the crab and avocado instead of the chicken) which came so late we didn't send it back, although we were surprised at the tiny amount of crab and the pretty tired lettuce that accompanied it. The mussel entree was excellent except that clams were mixed in, I guess to make up for the small amount of mussels - the dish was tasty but I think if you're going to use clams you should say so on the menu. Excellent scallops though. Waiter seemed distracted. I'd go back again for lunch, not for dinner."

  • "Atmosphere, food, service, and drinks all excellent. Great place for fine dining and/or hanging out with friends. We particularly like the outside oyster bar in the summer and the cozy fireplace in the lounge during the colder months...great place to entertain as well."

  • "We loved everything we ordered. Oysters, Mushroom Phyllo, scallops, spring roll. For dinner, Lobster Ravioli, special pasta of the day, lamb. Sangria. Would highly recommend and will be back. We sat outside but on a cool night there is a nice bar area with a fireplace and on the night we were there there was live music. Very nice all around."

  • " The menu was interesting and varied; everything was very good. I had the mushroom phyllo appetizer, then the appetizer-sized lamb chops. All very good. I especially liked the option to get an appetizer or main-course size of so many selections. My husband had the pulled pork taco app (a special) and the halibut (also a special)...tacos were tasty; fish was super-fresh. It was our server's first night; she was a little freaked out at having to open a bottle of wine. We told her not to worry, we weren't judging her! She managed just fine. I would definitely go back."

  • "I was really surprised that the little red house opened up inside to a fairly big room.It was raining so we didn't get to dine outside which would have been preferable as the noise level inside was very loud. The service was very good and everyone loved the food.....try the amazing figs stuffed with goat cheese and wrapped in prosciutto."

  • "My parents and elderly great-aunt were visiting from out of town, and I decided to take them to The Red House because I knew the food would be excellent, the ambience lovely, and that we would generally have a nice, relaxing, "New England-y" evening. I was not disappointed. One thing I really like about the menu (other than the scallops with smoky potato and pea hash-- perfect in every way!) is the fact that many of the entrees come in full or half-sizes-- excellent for mixing and matching if you just can't decide what to order. While my half-order of lobster ravioli was just about the right size for half an entree, the half-order of swordfish was plenty for a full meal, and everyone raved over it. Will definitely come here again!"

  • "Food OK, dining room was hot and unpleasant, often had to wait a long time for the waiter. WE were the waiters."

  • "We took our daughter and son in law there for graduation lunch. We were going to be late and let them know. No problem. We live nearby and the food is always excellent. Red House is especially nice in summer to sit outside but the inside is cozy and moderately quiet. "

  • "this was a fantastic experience from start to finish. it was a cold rainy night, and it was fitting to walk into the pub with a fire burning in the fireplace (although it was may 23). we had the music room reserved for our group which made the evening have a bit of an intimate feel to it for our special occasion. the service was prompt and friendly and the food was very good and priced reasonably (especially for the neighborhood). i would recommend this for any occasion, and look forward to returning in better weather to enjoy the outdoor bar and patio."

  • "We did not enjoy any aspect of our experience at Red House either of two times we visited, once over the winter and this past Saturday. There was one greeter--outside--who had to walk each party into the restaurant and seat them before coming back for the next group. We waited on the sidewalk for at least 10 minutes, as there were two large parties ahead of us. I feel it was a waste of personnel and an inefficient way of getting people in on time. The food didn't taste good. The vinaigrette on the beet salad was oily; the salmon risotto bland except for hidden chili-type pepper; the pasta with duck and artichokes was under-seasoned except for the same hot chili pepper. Seating was tight with no aisles between tables. Noisy. Not a good time."

  • "Just one disappointment - they have dscontinued the half portions that made it possible to share and try several dishes- one of the reasons I always loved the Red House . Too bad!"

  • "We waited 20 minutes to place a drink order and 15 more to get them. When waiters bring food they auction it off, like they have no way of knowing who ordered what. Poor training. I don't like a beautiful filet of fish to be mired in flavorless whipped potatoes. "

  • "The service was sub-par. Our waitress may have said four words during our entire stay, mixed up our drinks, and upon bringing us our meals, she just left them on the end of the table rather than putting them in front of us. It wasn't a big deal, but it was a treatment that I have never experienced before. The only reason I gave the Service a "Fair" rating is because all the other wait staff were incredibly friendly and seemed to take interest in their job. As for the food, we ordered the risotto and seafood fettuccine. For the price, they both lacked flavor and creativity. The risotto was flavorless and lacking on the salmon. The fettuccine had a little more flavor, but still nothing close to exceptional"

  • "Great food! Great atmosphere! A home run in every dining category!"

  • "This restaurant served half portions that are a good buy. For those who like it quiet, this restaurant doesn't play music."
    Dined on 5/3/2014
  • "As a group of seven we got the special "music room," which provided both intimacy and lower noise -- as if in someone's dining room -- but the energy of our group meant that the waiter held back a bit in moving the orders along, totally understandable. Most of us had lobster dishes, and I have to say (as one who knows lobster) that even in the linguine it was a perfectly cooked, sweet and delicious lobster. (Don't attempt this dish unless you know how to take a lobster apart with minimal mess). Desserts were good. Wines were VERY reasonably priced, also with some interesting choices."

  • "Ordered lobster risotto with triple crème brie & pea tendrils that I expected to be sweet & creamy. But it was spicy hot with a burn that grew with every bite. My husband's pasta with ham was also spicy hot so maybe this is their standard seasoning for pasta dishes but, if so, I wish they would say that on the menu. The atmosphere was cozy but the rickety chairs need tightening. Service was lackluster. We seldom saw our waiter but when he collected my full uneaten plate of food, and I told him that I did not like it, he said nothing. He did not ask why or request feedback for the kitchen, and he did not offer an apology, all of which I found odd. It was like nothing new or surprising. Very disappointing - we'll not return."

  • "No complaints, just nice service and good food. Love those half portions."

  • "We found the wild boar meat a bit tough. Usually as per our experience this kind of meat should be more tender"

  • "I love the choice of smaller portions; makes it possible to try more dishes or to have dessert. Great variety on the menu."

  • "This was the second time I was there. Both times were celebratory. The fist after my Jan 29 talk at HKS with a group and this one with just one person to celebrate that event and so much else. We were given a quiet table as requested. The oysters, lobster, special ramps, and all the other food were absolutely fabulous. Drinks superb, wine good. All in all a masterful production!"

  • "My husband, son and I went to he. Red House for Easter. The room was nice with a skylight and our corner table had a bench with cushions. The food was great. The scallop appetizer was just right and our meal of duck was just the right size and so flavorful with the mashed potatoes. Service was very good. I would gladly go there again. "

  • "I've been here 4 or 5 times before and always had a great meal. This time was very different. For starters, it was probably 80 degrees in the dining room. finally 20 minutes into the meal a window was opened. She would take an order from one or two of us and then disappear. At one point we saw her on her phone in the corner when we clearly hadn't ordered entrees yet. And then the food arrived. The salad that I had was drowning in oil and the duck entree was indelible - literally impossible to eat. My friend got the snapper and wasn't convinced it was snapper. All and all a terrible experience and embarrassing for me since I had chosen the restaurant. I may be back, but only to have drinks in the summer on their great patio. "

  • "I chose this restaurant as a nice centrally located place that had plenty of seafood options - especially many varieties of lobster dishes. Our out of town guest had trouble making it over from Boston in 45 minutes and we were warnedabout the 2 hr limit. That aside, the restaurant is very charming, in the heart of Harvard Square on a pedestrian only side road near the Galleria and the Charles Hotel. The front room in the old part of the house had a blazing fire which was welcome on a chilly night. We sat in back which was also nice and quieter. I loved the lobster chowder and a beet salad side. Everyone else ordered the lobster risotto. I'd go back again in nicer weather and take the time to enjoy walking around the area before or after."

  • "This restaurant is in a simply wonderful setting, with a great urban view unencumbered by cars, very good service and of course, wonderful, homemade Italian/continental food. Love the half portions. The oysters are a bargain. Love the real wood burning fireplaces on a cold day."

  • "I have the good fortune to dine at the Red House with my partner about twice a year and it is always excellent, but this past Saturday was by far the best--the two of us had the Duck and Pork Ragout, which were phenomenal: uniquely seasoned, well accompanied, and cooked to perfection! We could ask for nothing more except to return to explore the regularly changing menu...the service is always professional and friendly."

  • "My wife and I were in the area for a Celtics game and had a gift certificate, so we decided to make a night of it. The place was great! Very quaint location in the heart of Cambridge. We had a early reservation at 5:30 and there were only a couple people in the back room, but by the time we were done, the room was packed. And they really pack people in there which is the only reason I gave ambience a 4 and not 5. I gave the overall rating a 5 because we had a fantastic meal, the service was great, and I think that should trump the fact that they capatilize on their success by filling the room. I will definately be back... Great job Red House!!!"

  • "Sat on front room, tiny w fireplace, bar, and seats about 15. Great on a cold winter's night! Back newer room has library atmosphere w large atrium/skylight. Oysters from the specials menu were popular and delicious! At 5:30 we saw several groups come just for drinks and oysters. Mussels cooked in wine with kale and tomatoes, and small plate lamb chops excellent. Caesar salad had wonderful white anchovies but too much dressing - our only complaint. Cosmopolitan nicely made and served in a slanted/-rim glass. Will go back!"
