Diner Reviews
  • "Great food (especially seafood). The bar area with the fireplace is very comfortable and fun. Great location in Harvard Square as well"

  • "We sat by the fireplace and had an amazing dinner. The lobster carbonara was to die for. This place is really cozy and so different from anywhere I've ever been."

  • "I chose this restaurant as a nice centrally located place that had plenty of seafood options - especially many varieties of lobster dishes. Our out of town guest had trouble making it over from Boston in 45 minutes and we were warnedabout the 2 hr limit. That aside, the restaurant is very charming, in the heart of Harvard Square on a pedestrian only side road near the Galleria and the Charles Hotel. The front room in the old part of the house had a blazing fire which was welcome on a chilly night. We sat in back which was also nice and quieter. I loved the lobster chowder and a beet salad side. Everyone else ordered the lobster risotto. I'd go back again in nicer weather and take the time to enjoy walking around the area before or after."

  • "This restaurant is in a simply wonderful setting, with a great urban view unencumbered by cars, very good service and of course, wonderful, homemade Italian/continental food. Love the half portions. The oysters are a bargain. Love the real wood burning fireplaces on a cold day."

  • "We went on a cold, rainy evening, so it was great to be in a warm and welcoming environment. The food was excellent. The service was attentive. The booth was very comfortable. Everyone in our party truly enjoyed the experience."

  • "Very good local food in an old house right off Harvard square."

  • "All the food was excellent, and very creative. The ambience is terrific---old house, warm, welcoming. The smell of the fireplace set a wonderful tone."

  • "Great that the menu has changed. For a long time, it has not changed. hard to keep returning if menu does not change. The Restaurant Week specials were terrific! (4 of us)"

  • "My wife and I got engaged on St. Patty's Day 2012 and ate at the Red House that night. Food was fantastic and our waiter helped maked it a very special night. We were very impressed. We went back on 2/13/14 to celebrate Valentine's day and hoped that we would relive an exceptional dining experience. Big Disappointment! Our server had very little personality and basically met the minimum as far as service is concerned. We ordered a seared scallop appetizer which was served with lentil. The scallop barely had any color to it. I'm guessing it was wet and could not be seared properly, or the cook was just rushing it. My wife got a braised short rib which was not seasoned well. I got the duck breast which was rubbery. Will Not Return."

  • "This used to be a fabulous restaurant. It's still good, but they've had to cut some corners, and it shows, sadly."

  • "I have the good fortune to dine at the Red House with my partner about twice a year and it is always excellent, but this past Saturday was by far the best--the two of us had the Duck and Pork Ragout, which were phenomenal: uniquely seasoned, well accompanied, and cooked to perfection! We could ask for nothing more except to return to explore the regularly changing menu...the service is always professional and friendly."

  • "We have eaten here before when in Cambridge and have always liked it. Good lobster selections, but the next time I would order the steamed lobster without all the fancy stuff. Also oyster/clam selection. I always like to order something New England when in New England"

  • "Sat on front room, tiny w fireplace, bar, and seats about 15. Great on a cold winter's night! Back newer room has library atmosphere w large atrium/skylight. Oysters from the specials menu were popular and delicious! At 5:30 we saw several groups come just for drinks and oysters. Mussels cooked in wine with kale and tomatoes, and small plate lamb chops excellent. Caesar salad had wonderful white anchovies but too much dressing - our only complaint. Cosmopolitan nicely made and served in a slanted/-rim glass. Will go back!"

  • "My wife and I were in the area for a Celtics game and had a gift certificate, so we decided to make a night of it. The place was great! Very quaint location in the heart of Cambridge. We had a early reservation at 5:30 and there were only a couple people in the back room, but by the time we were done, the room was packed. And they really pack people in there which is the only reason I gave ambience a 4 and not 5. I gave the overall rating a 5 because we had a fantastic meal, the service was great, and I think that should trump the fact that they capatilize on their success by filling the room. I will definately be back... Great job Red House!!!"

  • "We ate at Red House on a Thursday night. They were nearly full -- reservations are a good idea here. Our server was friendly and charming, but not always well-informed about the dishes, and we had to ask for bread three times. However, the food more than made up for it. We had the mussels of the day, which were in a delectable white wine sauce. The grilled shrimp we added to the beet salad were big, fat, and beautifully cooked, and the salad beneath was a very nice version of this standard dish. The duck was perfectly cooked to order, and the lobster risotto was absolutely divine. Servings were generous for the price, including the half orders. The only disappointment was the bread pudding, which was just not my style."

  • "The Red House is a lovely place to dine in every way -- beautiful, healthful and delicious food; beautiful spaces; great service; miraculous quiet, you can actually hear one another talk. It is my topmost favorite restaurant to go to currently. By a long shot. P.S. I checked things like "good for groups" even though I haven't been to the Red House with a group, because I'm sure the private dining rooms you can reserve there are very special -- like every other aspect of the place!"

  • "I took a friend from out of town and we both enjoyed our evening at your restaurant; special thanks to Deep at the desk and our server, Daniel. most courteous and helpful .Delicious food, quiet even though full of guests. great service and ambience"

  • "The Red House food & service was exceptional, however, our party of 6 people were crammed into a corner table. There appeared to be room in the restaurant where our table would have been less cramped."

  • "Lovely setting and the bar has a welcoming fireplace, so the atmosphere is promising. Problem: a very noisy bar and even the main room could be quieter. The food was uneven: we had one excellent appetizer but another one run out before 8pm. The pasta was very good but the duck was dry."

  • "This is the third time I've gone to the Red House and have loved it every time. My friends and I always start off with either a soup, salad or small appetizer followed by a few dozen oysters. The food is fantastic and the oysters are incredibly fresh. My one minor complaint this time was our waiter was clearly trying to leave for the night as we were finishing up and handed us a check a little faster than what would have been expected. He came over to check on it far too many times to the point where it got annoying. It was obvious he was trying to rush us so he could leave. The other two times I was there, the service was great so I don't think this is usual. I very much recommend the Red House if you are a fan of oysters."

  • "Red House is perfectly situated in the heart of Harvard Square, 4 min. walk from the subway and on a quiet side street. The bar/lounge was super with a roaring fire on a snowy evening. The small intimate space was lovely and the drinks were delicious. The dining room was just O,K. with quite an extensive menu. Oysters were good, not amazing; the wine was very good, and the entrees were fair to good. We will return in good weather to sit outside and enjoy the scene. I think a new chef with some innovative ideas would be a big help."

  • "Three of us had a lovely lunch on a cold, snowy Saturday afternoon. We sat in the bar, in front of a warm fire as the snow piled up outside. We had delicious bakes dates to start. I had a roasted kale salad with shrimp which was delicious. My companions both had the salmon club sandwiches which they enjoyed. We each had a draft beer that was a perfect complement to the lunch."

  • "Great place to take a date. My significant other loved the place and the food. I've also been here for their daytime oyster special and their oysters are phenomenal. Delicious, big, served with great sides. So much value for the buck."

  • "This restaurant participated in Harvard Square's Chocolate festival with a menu of chocolate infused delicacies. However, this menu would not be offered until dinner. The experience made up for this misunderstanding. When we requested to be seated by the fireplace, the wait-staff happily obliged. There was someone there to tell me about the gluten free options, and there were so many! This, and the locally sourced ingredients made me so happy! The food was delicious, expertly displayed, and in the coziest of settings: the owner refurbished the place himself, says the website. Even though we missed the chocolate menu, I was able to order a hot chocolate cocktail there. The Almond Joy was a little strong, just how I like it!"

  • "Sat in the lounge area next to the fireplace which was very nice and cozy. Staff were very friendly and accommodating. Lounge got very busy, crowded and loud so if that is not what you are looking for, you may want to choose a different room."

  • "It is a charming setting especially if you get seated near the fire place but besides that the food is average, heavy on sea food, service is friendly, portions are normal, not skimpy, food quality is average, price is normal for what you pay and what you get. At least you do not leave the place empty pocket and empty stomach."

  • "We have eaten here many times and have never been disappointed by the food or service. The 1/2 portion entrees are a great feature"

  • "We were coming from a concert and had no prior experience of this place. Somewhat a surprise, they had super yummy lobster dishes and great offer on oysters. I also had esparagus soup, but it was rather uneventful. Would def recommend to friends and will prol go back as I am in the Harvard Sq area a lot and this was a nice alternative in between the great dive bars."

  • "We went on New Year's Eve! They were so accommodating to such a busy night. Bartender shucked lots of delicious PEI Oysters and we all enjoyed them. Dining Room was festive and the service (our waitress) was the perfect server with great timing on when we might need something. We loved the food offered on the prix fixed menu and could not have started our New Year with a better night out!"

  • "Have always wanted to grab a drink in the front room with the big fireplace, and that was indeed lovely. Though 2/3 wines tried were not good. Dinner in the back was also fabulous in terms of ambiance and service, though the food was not as I had recalled when i used to dine here several years ago. Apps were great, entrees were rather bland - no sauce, same soggy veggies for everyone. Still, had a lovely time and didn't totally break the bank."

  • "Nothing could be cozier than to dine by the fireside on a cold winter night. We were pleasantly surprised to find that we sacrificed nothing in terms of the food. A great steak in a wonderful cognac sauce, papardelle with pork ragout, all the extras. The service was just outstanding, very attentive and friendly and helpful with recommendations. A go-to restaurant in Harvard Square. We will come back often."

  • "I love the Red House. We went during the Christmas break because a friend from out of town had never been, although in Boston many times. The wait staff is always interested and friendly and the menu varies often and with the seasons. It's also good for tourists because of the extensive lobster dishes. This visit the oysters on the half shell were very tasty and cheap! Go early and often."
