Diner Reviews
  • "On a recent impromptu trip to San Diego with my wife and 5 children we decided to stop by the Red Door for lunch . We were apprehensive about whether or not the restaurant would be kid friendly . However upon arrival we were greeted warmly and reassured that while they don't have a childrens menu , they could accommodate the kids with some flexibility . The service was excellent and the food was impeccable . They have quite a good wine list as well. I would highly recommend this establishment and will be visiting again ."

  • "The Good: Food. All of our dishes were quite good. The Bad: 25 minutes just to order drinks when waiter finally arrived, we ordered a bottle of the Floral Springs Trilogy (the 1st item on the list) only to be told 10 minutes later, they don't carry that anymore. Ordered a comparable bottle asked for decanter. Waiter poured a glass and spilled 1/4 of it all over table and partly on me. Took several minutes to return to partially clean up wine. I cleaned up remainder. Had to ask twice more for a decanter. Waiter brought wrong appetizer and said he wouldn't charge us. (why would he?) Entrees took an hour to arrive even though several parties arrived after us got theirs first. Surrounded by others who also complained about service."

  • "We always enjoy the Red Door experience! The food is amazing, the wait staff is delightful and the ambiance manages to be so relaxing and comfortable with a touch of elegance as well. Whether you're in jeans or evening attire you're going to feel welcomed. We recommend the Red Door to everyone we know and we will continue to frequent it for dinner out. No matter what dish you order you will love it. The food is fresh and perfectly prepared every time. Try it. The Red Door does not disappoint!"

  • "Had a terrific dinner here on Friday night. The staff was very accommodating even after we changed our reservation 3 times. Service was prompt and attentive. Food was delicious. Ambience is fresh and bright, yet cozy and romantic at the same time. We will be back."

  • "Have eaten at this restaurant many times over the last 4 years-always enjoy it. I was a bit disappointed this time because what I originally wanted had just been taken off the menu. Especially like the Happy Hour menu, often suitable for an early dinner."

  • "The food was excellent--try the Fried Green Tomato salad! We also had the mini Banana Cream Pie which was delicious. We had reservations at 7:00 and I found the noise level to be above what I would like--I had trouble hearing my dinner partner who does not have a low voice. There do not appear to be any sound deadening materials in use and it could use a few--especially since the venue is not huge and there are quite a few tables--it doesn't feel crowded, just noisy. We would certainly go back but we would book for earlier."

  • "My husband and I enjoyed our 3-course meal tremendously. The eggplant/artichoke aioli, flatbread, beet gratin, short ribs, burger, and lemon goat cheesecake are all winners!. The ambiance is intimate and conducive for conversation. We will visit again to try other menu items."

  • "Had a wonderful birthday brunch this past Sunday. The table was set and ready for our party to arrive which was excellent (have had trouble in the past at other restaurants that didn't get the table ready until I arrived grrr) David our server was sublime. I ordered the spicy patatas, it had great flavor, but the eggs were very runny and there was maybe a teaspoon of actual chorizo. Everyone else seemed to really enjoy theirs."

  • "after reading all the favorable reviews on yelp and the article by the food editor in the San Diego UT, we made reservations. Our waiter was very knowledgable and made great recommendations on what to order. Appetizers (green bean beignets, fried green tomatoes and stuffed squash blossoms), main dishes (lamb and halibut) and dessert (lemon cheesecake, creme brûlée and chocolate souffle) were all outstanding. We all want to go back...one of the best meals I've had in SD!"

  • "Very good food, small portions and very dark ambiance"

  • "The service was wonderful. I ordered the fish and the red relish/sauce was very tasty -- but the combination of quick fry then bake -- resulted in a tough over-cooked outer shell and slightly raw in the middle (which actually didn't bother me too much). The flavors of the sauce were great but maybe poaching the fish or some other way to prep it would have helped."

  • "We were there for my birthday and it was our first time dining at the Red Door. The appetizer we shared was wonderful "the fried green tomatoes" were great. My wife had the local halibut and I had the burger with sweet potato fries everything was presented well and delicious. Our waiter was charming and was helpful making our selections. The desert small banana cream pie was worth the weight I put on. We will return."

  • "Great service and service recovery. Made a comment about the halibut and server immediately had the kitchen remake the entree, offering to serve a soup or quick substitute so we could all dine together. Food was delicious - nice twists that made a few classics better."

  • "Wife, mature daughter & self were looking for a good lunch location. Lucky find. All 3 main courses excellent. Service very good. Ambience comfortable & friendly. Half price bottle of good wine on Monday didn't hurt either."

  • "A few days before Father's Day we were looking on OpenTable for restaurants with availability. We came across The Red Door, liked the menu and thought we'd give it a try. When we had gone to Starbucks across the street on previous occasions, I remembered seeing the restaurant and thought at the time we should give it a try knowing how we liked the neighborhood. So we went for brunch when they first opened at 10am and we're not disappointed. My wife. And I both got "sweet" breakfast items, pancakes and French toast, and they were excellent. They also had a few egg based omelets and the like on the menu, but most other items were lunch type stuff. So maybe a bit limited in their diversity of breakfast items. Just check menu ahead of time."

  • "From the moment we walked in we knew this experience was going to be great The food was outstanding. Great menu and difficult to choose. Needless to say the short ribs were amazing and hubby had the schnitzel. The service was also outstanding! Thank you Arturo you made our experience even more wonderful. Can't wait to go back for more delicious treats!"

  • "From the outside, THe Red Door looked like it might be an expensive formal restaurant. I was wrong. It is moderately priced, and has a warm, lovely ambience. We went for a late lunch. Since there were not many other diners, our waiter was pretty attentive, but not overly. The food was delicious, and everything on the menu was focused on farm to table - organic and locally grown. High recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for good food and nice ambience in Mission Hills/Hillcrest."

  • "Following my culinary nose hoping to avoid tourist traps in downtown San Diego I discovered the Red Door thanks to OpenTable, partially drawn by the promise of an exceptional wine list. It turned out that the ones served by the glass weren't as "adventurous" as announced - rather, they all nodded to mainstream Cal palates, nothing really elegant or non-oaked. I tried a Santa Barbara Pinot Grigio and found it buttery, disappointing. Food: First I had a beet salad. Now I love beet salad, but does it have to be so huge? Instead of the promised small portion I got an XXL and was full when my burger arrived. The burger was ok but didn't wow me. Best for last: the service was really friendly. I got an extra side of purple potatoes and liked it."

  • "I eat here often and I do enjoy writing a short review in support of The Red Door. Once again, my experience here was amazing. I was able to introduce yet another friend who dined with me Sunday evening and she couldn't stop raving about it. John B, our server was awesome. He offered great suggestions and even though a couple of menu items weren't available, we were still able to find things that made us happy. Justin , the manager, was on the floor a few times as well and brought his sense of humor and relaxing personality. We enjoyed our meals, flank for me and the special of the day, a 10oz rib eye for my date. For dessert we lavished over a chocolate mousse cake and creme brulee. Will I come back, Absolutely! You should give it a try!"

  • "My family and I have had the great fortune to eat at the Red Door a few times now. Each visit has been as delicious as the last. Each plate is beautifully plated with locally grown vegetables and edible flowers. The menu changes with the seasons allowing the chef to take full advantage of whatever is in season. Recently I've enjoyed the vegetable lasagne with noodles made from a Swiss Chard and Kale mixture. It is delicious! Last week I invited a small group to celebrate a birthday - everyone was extremely pleased and pleasantly full when we departed having ordered an array of entrees from the short ribs to macaroni and cheese, to flat iron steak to a rare fish that was out of this world. The desserts are amazing as well!"

  • "Only one grip was the banana cream pie didn't have much flavor in the crust of the whip cream...only when you could find a banana. Otherwise, the service was amazing and my lasagna was spot on! I celebrated my birthday and the server made me feel special the entire meal!"

  • "I love knowing the produce is home grown and other ingredients are from the region. Not only is the food prepared in a delectable, appetizing manner the service is just as great. The fresh fish, beef ribs and vegetable lasagna were all perfectly prepared and enjoyed...The little extra touches of fresh flowers sprinkled into the salad and the way the food is presented on the plates makes the dining experience even more special. The chocolate baked mousse , lemon cheesecake and crème bruele make a perfect way to end the meal!!! "

  • "We had a nice early dinner because later reservations were full. The food was really good farm fresh and hearty. The staff was knowledgable and even let us taste wine before committing to a bottle. I was surprised by how quiet the place was but again it was early and most of the other patrons were seniors."

  • "My friend and I both had the same salad, she with some delicious halibut on top. It was crisp and fresh and full of good flavors. We had a corner table and a nice quiet business conversation. Red Table is great for meeting friends coming from downtown and La Jolla--easy to get to coming from either direction."

  • "We had a wonderful dinner at the Red Door. I took my girlfriend there for her birthday and we were not disappointed. We got to the restaurant early, before the dinner could be served. The server graciously let us in and seated us. We had an appetizer of squash blossoms that were delightful. We both ordered the short ribs, which were also excellent. The food was fresh, well prepared, and beautifully presented. The Red Door is not a pretentious place. It's more like a neighborhood bistro, most suitable for adult dining. I would heartily recommend it."

The music was such an nice surprise they were very good musicians perfect "brunch time songs" . When I am in San Diego again I will come back and try lunch or dinner - it was great!"

  • "This place is a FIND for brunch! While they've a very appetizing lunch/dinner menu, our visit was for Mother's Day Brunch & the food did not disappoint. Overall it was a lovely experience, and I would definitely return. We ordered this sinful "Cinny Bun" for the table that was to die for and two of us had the bottomless seasonal Bellini's (cranberry sage... yum). There were four of us and we ordered different items: Egg White Protein Scramble, Braised Short Rib Benedict, Spicy Patatas Bravas & our vegetarian girl ordered a fresh fruit bowl/vegetable hash. ALL were delicious/unique in flavor. Only downside for us was the service - staff incredibly friendly but not very attentive throughout until the very end. (not crazy busy either)"

  • "Absolutely marvelous! People rave about the lamb meatballs and indeed they are good I was pleasantly surprised however with the spaetzle that comes with it. The beef brisket was very tender and delectable. Mac and cheese is amazing! Very smooth not gooey or powdery. I just had to have the sweet potato chips having seen the pictures on yelp. It did not disappoint. They were thinly cut and fried crisp. Carrot cake bread pudding, huwaaat! So delicious. My husband and I had a great dining experience! I liked that it didn't have an uppity feel to it. We will keep coming back for more. Arturo was an awesome server!"
