Food is excellent but the portions are small. Service was the worst. It took them 20 minutes to get me water that I didn't ask for, and 30 minutes to take my order from after we sat down. Our waitress was nowhere to be found. Love the drinks though. Hate to love this place

Parking was there but there was also a rehearsal dinner so we parked om the street. The service was good and our server was friendly and efficient. We ordered the short ribs and the the lingcod and it was well prepared. Our only complaints were the room was too dark and was pricey.

We came here for an anniversary dinner not entirely sure what to expect. You don't always know what you'll get with "American" fare, but everything at The Raymond, from the craft cocktails to small plates, entrees and even the bread, was exceptional. This has quickly become one of our favorite places on the East side and probably all of LA. The menu is creative, seasonal, local and healthy. It's also varied, without being overwhelming. The only difficulty in deciding what to order was that everything looked interesting and worth trying. Dishes are inventive and eclectic - some have Indian, Korean, Spanish or Mediterranean influences - but everything feels like it goes together. The setting in a romantically-lit old Craftsman house is special, an authentic piece of Pasadena history. The bar looks like a great place to just have a drink and a few small plates - we intend to go back for that as well as more meals. The wait staff was very attentive and even started us off with some complementary anniversary bubbly. We can't wait to go back.

n the past it’s been a great place, recently the consistence has is all over the place. I had the salmon that came as two little pieces and was over cook. When I point this to waitress, she asks if I want something else. I said no, I just want the salmon cook right. Her answer was that she needed to get the chief to talk to me, why just cook as med. rare. I finial got after every one at our table was done. At $35 dollars I should not have to hassle to get the food cook right. The other issues have been the amount they give you for the short ribs, $38. Two great restaurants, Lucquc’s and Bistro 45 will give a good portion and theirs is wonderful . Raymond will give you a taste. I won’t be going back, maybe in a year i will return

We had to sit outside where the experience is much more local bistro than fine dining. Our service was all over the place and waitress had no knowledge of food she was serving. She forgot someone's drink and then the food arrived and 3 of the plates were stone cold. Sent food back and rather than remake meal as you expect it was just heated up so plate was boiling hot- not good! Very disappointed

The Raymond is a really good spot. Unfortunately it is a little hidden away, but that is good for those who know about it. It can be a walk for some and a short drive for others in the hood between South Pasadena and Pasadena. The selections are well thought out, portions make sense, and the quality of the food is very good. All in all, a great place to go.

It was my first time at the Raymond. My guest had dined there before and spoke highly of it. Sadly that was not my experience. The server recommended the tapas like shrimp appetizer. Beautiful shrimp but the spice (?) and potato left with it left me very confused; bland on bland. I had the lamb for the entrée. I concede that I am Australian and love flavorful lamb. To the best of my knowledge this had no flavor, or if it did the flavor was totally masked by the charcoal crust. Note to Chef: lamb has fat so will flare up if exposed to an open fire and medium looks pink, not brown at the center (just saying). The accompaniments were purportedly Indian, but largely disappointing, except for the eggplant. Final tip; avoid the coffee!

An charming old place struggle to stay relevant... It is in an old craftsman house, very charming. Chef did a great job on the short rib and also decent on scallop, but fall short on small plates. I ordered three, they are all decent, but did not blow my mind as I expect from such an nice establishment. For the price, I could get much better fair somewhere else.

We've been wanting to try this place for years. Now I know what all the hub-bub is about. Fabulous food prepared beautifully - visually & gastronomically. Portions are small, but that's all we wanted - no leftovers to take home and we didn't feel stuffed. Waitress was very knowledgeable and helpful with dietary needs. It was very busy, but we never felt rushed.

  • Onion rings!
    OpenTable Diner Since 2006
    Dined on 9/21/2014
A dank, converted former private home delivers wonderful food. When I first arrived I thought the air was stuffy and the restaurant overly dark, with dark wooden tables and chairs. Then I got the onion rings as a starter! They were probably the best onion rings I have enter had. Hot, crunchy and served with a heavenly malt vinegar infused aioli. The rest of the dishes (beef cheeks with house made pasta, stone fruit salad with burrata) were not quite as sublime but were all delicious and well prepared. Cheerful, pleasant service was also a plus.

Amazing food and cocktails and the bar menu is also great. A little noisy if sitting outside (traffic noise) but sitting inside is cosy. Service is ok but you don't seem to get a dedicated server, just whoever is closest at the time, they are very attentive though so it's not necessarily a bad thing. Reasonably priced and huge portions... the rack of lamb dish could easily feed two... seriously. Take half home and it's even better in a sandwich the next day

We sat in the 1st dining room....it was VERY dark and gloomy. The rugs and floor were dirty! We arrived at 11:45, so we were among the first seated. It's as though the place wasn't cleaned! My friend called the atmosphere "grim"..... There are no salt & pepper sets on the tables, and also no sugar/sweetener. You have to request both, and no bread was served.... The menu was uninteresting....salads or sandwiches, very little else.

Dinner was most interesting. My companion and I ordered appetizers, 4 of them. All were good and interesting.Problem was most of it was finger food, and we needed those little warm moist washcloths to clean our hands. Would recommend that they offer those. Our waitress was very kind however and got us some napkins which had been moistened in warm water....worked fine. Most delicious was some form of Yellowtail still on the bone in a delicious sauce served with a cucumber salad. We also enjoyed the chicken wings, though difficult to eat as they were large and served intact. Would recommend this restaurant

I periodically go to the Raymond when I need to have a nice meal in a great setting. The ambiance is top notch, and it is fairly quiet and conducive to conversation. As opposed to some of the larger restaurants in town, it has a good vibe. Having a top notch bar attached doesn't hurt. Whether its a dinner for two or for a small group, your privacy is always respected and service is swell. Whether I bring family or VIP clientele, I feel good about the place.

We finally made our way over for a Sunday brunch - reservations made the day before. The cute patio area seemed welcoming but we opted for air-condition and we were seated in the first dining room (where the air-condition is on full-tilt). Our server, Rebecca, was a sweetheart and when she found out it was our first time, offered recommendations and told us about the Raymond being a relaxing place for dinner, drinks and/or dessert. We ended up with German Pancakes, Ahi Sandwich, and an avocado salad - all were fresh and satisfying. Our drinks were constantly refilled and we felt at home in the home-turned-restaurant.

Our dinner experience was just a hair shy of perfect. The food was terrific and the ambiance and service were likewise excellent. I rated the overall experience as four star instead of five is that we told the restaurant it was for our wedding anniversary and asked, in advance, that they recommend and ideal table. The hostess had no idea what we were talking about when she said "where did we want to sit." There are multiple seating areas in the restaurant offering a different ambiance and we hoped they would know which was probably best for a couple on this special occasion.

We were celebrating our 33rd wedding anniversary. Unfortunately, a party of 25 was also celebrating something that night. Our reservation was for 7:30 . . .we ended up leaving at 10:30. I think our main course arrived around 10 pm. To the restaurant's credit, they did comp our appetizers (which arrived swiftly) but when everyone around us got their main courses (and they had come in after us) I finally told the waiter if we didn't get our mains within a 20 minute period we would need the check. The food is great and the specialized drinks at the bar are delicious and unique. If this wasn't a quick walk from our house, don't know if we would consider returning.
