Diner Reviews
  • "My wife and I have dined there several times over the last few years. Always top notch service and the ambiance cannot be beat. The food? Superb!"

  • "The main reason I went to the Ranch House was to listen to Alan Thornhill.. I have been a follower of Alan for years. I loved the outdoor dining. Would love to come back."

  • "The garden setting is so beautiful and inviting, perfect for a romantic dinner -- we celebrated our wedding anniversary dinner here. We started with the crab cakes, which were very tasty. The rack of lamb was delicious and be sure to save room for dessert. The lime cheesecake and the guava/mango gelato were both good choices as they are not super sweet desserts. The only thing missing on this night was some nice background music."

  • "It has been a while since we were last there and were disappointed that the much-loved chicken liver pate has been replaced with a nondescript pork pate. Still, the entrees were excellent and deserts very good. Service was only fair considering the prices here but the place was packed so it is still doing a good job."

  • "*Reviewed prior to ownership change The four of us enjoyed a wonderful final supper with The Ranch House as we've known it all these years, complete with salads, diver scallops, steak, dessert and two bottles of wine hand-picked by the best sommelier ever, Michael Denney. Thank you for years of delicious memories. Best of luck to all of you."

  • "This is my third time to the Ranch House and it favorite date night place, it has a unique decor that is so impressive, we enjoyed our dinner by a little stream with plants all around us, absolutely beautiful. We look forward to our next visit."

  • "I can't think of a more romantic restaurant, sitting beneath the twinkling lights, bamboo and full moon. What an amazing experience- not to be missed on a trip to Ojai."

  • "We were here on the last night of the entertainment with Alan Thornhill. This restaurant is closing and hopefully the new owners will update this tired menu. The wine steward is unpleasant, hopefully he will be replaced. The appetizers were cold, and not cooked completely. The sides served on the plates were cold, asparagus with a glob of ice cold hollandaise sauce. After plates were delivered, never saw the server again. This will be the last time we go to this restaurant."

  • "The Wild Mushroom Strudel appetizer was out of this world. I had the crab cakes and my man had the beef tournedos and they were delicious. My salad was fresh and crisp with a nice light vinaigrette. The food was some of the best we have ever had. The ambiance of the bamboo forrest was magical. It is pricey but certainly worth it."

  • "I had heard about the The Ranch House over 30 years ago, but never found the opportunity to go. Wow, have I been missing out on some incredible food, great service and beautiful ambience! I took my fiance on Sunday night for a special dinner, and we both became enchanted with the place the moment we walked in the door. We felt we had returned to Costa Rica on vacation, with all the plants and water features. To then be served one of the best meals in memory was a fantastic experience. Can't say enough about The Ranch House. Steve & Dawn"

  • "Enjoyed the garden setting and homey atmosphere. Four of us came for the brunch and lunch dishes. The Mushroom Strudel was light and filled with wild mushrooms on a creamy mushroom sauce. My girlfriend enjoyed the Seared Duck Breast in a cherry sauce and thought the portion was generous. My husband enjoyed the Westridge Sausages for Brunch. The brunch dishes include a nice fruit platter and a colorful potato hash. We were impressed with the food and service."

  • "Food was great and they were really good about my wife's egg allergy. Scallops were great, NY steak was a little tough, pureed pumpkin was the best side dish, bread fresh with a nice crust."

  • "The setting was really nice, but for the price the food was sub par."

  • "you might expect THE RANCH HOUSE to be the name of a restaurant specializing only in slabs of beef but in this case be prepared to be pleasantly surprised: the menu features interesting and balanced vegetarian, fish and fowl complements to the likewise well-prepared lamb, pork and requisite steaks. i had a rosemary rack of new zealand lamb with great sides of butternut squash, greenbeans, potatoes and a lingberry compote that had me finishing my dinner v...e...r...y slowly so i could savor the experience. the layout of the restaurant is charming and ranges from the 'clubhouse' atmosphere of the main dining room to the balcony overlooking the garden to initimate dining areas for 2 or 4 nestled in bamboo groves."

  • "Visited on Saturday night and it was beautiful. If you love outdoors and twinkling lights, with an awesome pond then it is one of the prettiest restaurants. The entire staff was great. The bread was stale. I ordered the scallops which were supposed to have won an award but they were not great at all and only came with three. The sides that came with it were very small portions-they could have at least added more squash and mashed potatoes. I was not even full when leaving I had to go get a snack, and I am a 120 pound woman. I could only imagine a full grown man. Too pricey to not have great quality everything and get an adult decently full. Besides my meal, my date got a steak and loved it."

  • "I've wanted to dine here for many years but my 73rd Birthday brought everyone together for a very special meal. It was a magical setting outside with an attentive wait staff. Our waitress was very helpful suggesting and describing items. There were many non-gluten items for my friend. Our table ordered an assortment of items: champagne cocktail, spinach soup, mushroom in filo, shrimp remoulade [French not Louisiana sauce], lobster and citrus, salad, pork chops, flat iron steak, scallop, Louisiana praline dessert and chocolate raspberry cake. We shared bites and thought they were all above average."

  • "Very pretty out door area with lots of trees and hanging plants. Wine and beer Only no hard liquor. Food presentation was very pretty. Orderd Mushroom appetizer, salad,.entree and desert. All the shoots was Prepared nicely but think the chef forgot to season everything. All the food was bland. Probably won't go back"

  • "We waited over 30 min for a table even though we had a reservation. Our waitress was sweet but did not seem to know what she was doing. The food was well executed but everything had dairy. One person in our group cannot eat dairy and they did end up accommodating her dietary need but it wasn't easy nor were the results that tasty. Overall we had a great time. It's a beautiful restaurant and setting. Just a bit rigid and unprepared."

  • "The food was exceptional and cooked to perfection as well as beautifully presented. I had the rack of pork which I worried my be too dry but it was cooked but moist and seasoned nicely. It came with mashed sweet potatoes, fettucine and asparagus with a nice, light sauce topped with chopped pecans. It was excellent! My friend had the rack of lamb which was also excellent. The wine was also very good. The atmosphere adds to the whole experience as you feel like you are eating in an English garden with twinkling lights. We were very lucky to have been there on a lovely March evening after an 80 degree day and it was the best you could hope for. Service was exceptional, to say the least. I would highly recommend the Ranch House!"

  • "The food and the servers were very good. It took a long time to get our food. I felt sorry for the servers. The table location was poor. We were the only table of 4 that they put us next to the front entrance inside the restaurant. The layout of the inside room was bad for a table of 4. All the food and workers kept going by our table."

  • "I have been hearing rave reviews for The Ranch House for years, made reservations for a special occasion dinner. The resaurant is pretty and romantic. The menu is smallish, but has a bit of variety. The food was great, but we don't drink beer or wine and they don't have a bar, which was a bit disappointing. Because it's so pretty and the food was good, will come back and try brunch. The service was not very good though, which doesn't seem right for the high prices."

  • "A great place to celebrate something special. The Koi pond table was absolutely stunning. I would highly recommend The Ranch House for a beautiful, tranquil and romantic must go place. The staff was wonderful. Always checking on us, but not to the extent we felt bothered. Great dining experience!"

  • "My boyfriend and I purchased a groupon for two for dinner at the Ranch House. We arrived an hour earlier than our 6:30 reservation to explore, and we were actually seated right away, which was very nice. The outdoor seating is absolutely beautiful: think tea lit garden with a variety of plants and a small stream along the dining area. The waitress was new, but she did a great job and was very attentive to detail. The food was beyond 5 stars - absolutely exceptional. I had the tornadoes of beef, a beef tenderloin with mushrooms in a wine sauce, and my boyfriend had the duck breast special in a cranberry-cherry glaze. Phenomenal. We'll be back."

  • "Dined at the Ranch House the day after Valentine's Day to avoid the crush. As usual, the food and service were outstanding. I was planning on having a New York steak, but when our server told us about the"specials" one of which was Duck Breast-she had me. The portion size was amazing and it was cooked absolutely perfectly and served on a bed of dark cherry reduction. If I could have consumed two, believe me I would have."

  • "I have been dining at the ranch house since the early nineties. I am a loyal fan. I usually dont take the time to write reviews. however, due to my loyalty I will. I also hope that it will be helpfull. I think you folks have not kept up with the times. The food is just average. My point of reference is a small cafe in Santa Paula, It is called Hozy's Cafe. It is on lemonwood drive. In the middle of an industrial park. The food is great. I believe the owner regularly brings in chefs from around the country to work with his staff. I believe this keeps the menu current and tasty. It just seems like the passion from management is no longer present. I will keep on dining at the ranch house, however, I cannot really recommed."

  • "We had a lovely time at the Ranch House. I wasn't sure if I was going to be warm enough since I had read that most tables were outside. The temp and atmosphere was perfect. There were about 6 tables inside but everyone was outside. There is an herb garden to walk through, a wine deck, and bridge over koi pond...a truly unique setting. We ordered a chicken entree with a cranberry glaze and the primo steak...both were delicious. For a special night out when you want to spend a little bit more, this is the place to go...try to arrive just at sunset so that you can see the beautiful herb garden."

  • "We went for brunch mainly for ambiance and the garden needed attention, and the 6inch rail was full of dust. For the price you just expect more upkeep. The service was good, but ordered pasta with salmon and wasn't expecting lox type salmon, would have preferred hearty chunks. My friend ordered the pork which was overcooked, should have sent back, but too hungry. We also asked for a table they claimed to have reservations for, but no one was ever sat there after 90 minutes. Don't plan on returning..."
