Diner Reviews
  • "My wife and I eat dinner here often and are never disappointed. The food is as good here as many restaurants in DC that are much more expensive."

  • "Always a wonderful meal/night out. Never disappointed."

  • "Tom is always great at preparing special requests and providing a consistent dinner at quite reasonable prices. Everything was prepared very well and looked great. Can't say anything bad whatsoever and we've been coming here for over 10 years. Consistent, high quality food."

  • "Very nice brunch with breakfast and lunch items. Everything was well prepared and tasty. Will go back again!"

  • "Brunch menu is diverse and they also have specials too! Portions are a little smaller than average but are priced accordingly - it's actually kind of nice because you don't fill up on the entrée and have room for dessert or an additional side. I checked the "scenic view" box on recommendations but this really refers to the area - great area for driving. The Rail Stop does have a patio but I have not eaten outside yet; the little town they're in is definitely scenic."

  • "A clear and better difference from the suburban mega-restaurant experience. Located in the heart of The Plains. Personal service, great food, and good wine. Recommend it for a quiet dinner for 2 or a small group."

  • "Tried The Rail Stop on a whim. I heard some good things and was able to get a reservation on new years eve. The food was excellent. The Filet was cooked perfectly and had exceptional flavor. The Lamb rago on fresh pasta was equally delicious. This is one of those neighbor places that is serving upscale food but in down home fashion. Very cozy romantic feel particularly (we went in the evening). This is must if you are in the area."

  • "Made a reservation for brunch on Sunday after Christmas. Reservation was unnecessary since there were only 3 other tables occupied at noon. Service was friendly although not real attentive (no refill of water glasses). About 8 choices of breakfast type entrees for brunch and a couple lunch selections. They make their own sausage and the bacon was good. The potatoes (big hunks of potatoes) were good. But no bread with breakfast. We had to order the toast after being served and they charged $1.50 for two slices. For $10 a plate you would think a piece of toast would come with it."

  • "This is a great little restaurant that has been around for years. It is a great local establishment with friendly staff. The night we went it was very busy and they accommodated our last minute larger party. The food was great and they have an excellent wine selection."

  • "My wife and I have eaten at the Rail Stop many times and have never been disappointed. This last dinner was no exception. The Flounder special was great and the mushroom appetizer made a great meal as well. But the highlight was the ginger bread pudding cake with lemon creme. Very well done."

  • "Lunch was fine, not very crowded, good service. Food was okay, I would not drive out of my way to find the restaurant. We had brunch everyone ordered something different and it was just okay, nothing special but the place is cute. Chairs were hard wooden seats but very casual and fun. Train wasn't running but when we asked they turned it on."

  • "Waitress was lovely, very positive about the restaurant in general and raved over the food...I ordered a wilted spincah sald with scallops - came out cold/oily and scallops were dry and overcooked little hocky pucks/no flavor. My guest ordered the special pulled pork sandwich - that came out WITHOUT any pork! The waitress came embarrassed to our table and brought the pulled pork on the side. Would not return."

  • "On Sunday, I enjoyed a yummy omelette (cheese and FRESH spinanch), crispy potatoes. For dessert, divine pecan bread pudding with Creme Anglaise (the dense dark bread is made onsite). Delicious food, charming decor and ambiance. Servers were pleasant and did their level best but service was slow. I think they were slammed and/or short-handed. It won't stop us from returning."

  • "If the cozy village of The Plains only had one restaurant, the one you would invent in your imagination would be The Rail Stop. From the moment you enter via the front porch until you give in to the temptations offered for dessert, the varied dishes and top notch preparations and unobtrusive service seem the perfect match to your conversation and satisfaction over having selected well. The only thing to question while dining there is when to come back."

  • "We had to make a last minute reservation. Our group consisted of two couples, we each had a child (ages 4 & 5). The food was excellent. very high end and unexpected. No children's menu which was a little disappointing, but they worked with us."

  • "The Rail Stop has been a family favorite for many years now. This past Saturday we made reservations for 5:30 p.m. - good thing, too, since it was busier than we've seen in a while, and we saw at least a few parties turned away because they had not made reservations. Our waiter was prompt, friendly and just attentive enough to take care of our needs without making us feel rushed or intruded upon. The vodka martinis were perfect - as usual, and the meal was fabulous. The steamed mussels with vermouth, parsely and butter were delicious. We each had the Petite Prime Angus NY Strip - cooked perfectly. We'll be back!"

  • "On our way to Middleburg, VA, we decided to take a slight detour to The Plains, VA for brunch. The Rail Stop is a charming, small country restaurant with delicious brunch. I had the open faced tomato basil omelet and my husband ordered the chorizo hash with poached eggs. Both dishes were excellent! The basil and tomato were very fresh and aromatic and the chorizo hash tasty and spicy. The service was excellent and we were seated across from the open kitchen where we could watch the ballet of the two chefs preparing both brunch and lunch dishes. Everything looks so good we were tempted to order more! I will definitely be back here!!"
