Diner Reviews
  • "This was our best dining experience at The Prune in our decades of visiting this wonderful restaurant. The food, our waiter, the ambience, the wine advice, all were top-notch. In fact, when asking about wine, our waiter/sommelier told us that there was a wine not on the wine list that would be perfect for what we ordered, and it indeed was. It was also the last bottle they had of this particular wine! All in all, a perfect and perfectly wonderful evening."

  • "My wife and I had a great three-course prix fixe dinner at Prune. Our server was attentive and our courses arrived at regular, unhurried intervals. The food was outstanding and we will return when we are in Stratford next."

  • "The attention to food is fabulous at the Prune, The use of local foodstuffs is great. The meal overall first rate."

  • "Although the atmosphere at the Prune was lovely and the service perfect, the meal was not without its disappointments. We were ready for the portions to be modest/small, as is customary at some of the finer restaurants. But the rolls were just a step above hamburger bun quality- white puffs, little texture or taste, no butter. Two of us had risotto which we found chewy, not creamy, like a scoop of rice with veggies. The polenta was excellent, as was the bass, which all 3 of us chose. The main course is served almost alone on the plate and vegetables are extra. Desserts were good (chocolate bread pudding ) but very small portions. All in all we had a nice meal but not unforgettable. We'd try another place before we returned there."

  • "We went to The Prune to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. I noted this in our reservation with Open Table, and all of the serving staff congratulated us. Simply put, the food was divine and the service exemplary."

  • "Lots of really great things on the menu, all carefully planned, beautifully presented, and delicious. I had the beet salad, risotto, the salmon entree, and chocolate bread pudding. My dinner companions had the soup, hangar steak and potatoes, chicken and chard, strawberry dessert, and apple cake dessert. Everyone enjoyed their meals. We had dinner after a matinee performance. It was a really pleasant and relaxed meal. Great service. We all agreed, the chocolate bread pudding was our favorite part of the meal."

  • "The food was delicious. Without a doubt the Cod was cooked to perfection with a Thai flavor to it. And the sweet pea soup had a wonderful, light flavor to it. The risotto was a let down, rather bland (there is no salt or pepper on the table) and way to many peas in it. If there are only 2 of you, beware of where they seat you. It's an old house made into a restaurant. Very cozy and eclectic in atmosphere, but don't get the table that stares into the kitchen, is squished into a corner, and is the main path where all the waiters rush by on there way to the dining room."

  • "A favorite Stratford restaurant. Excellent service; great staff. Our party of 4 enjoyed the full meal with wine. Great attention to detail; answered all questions about the menu items with specific information. Support staff was excellent making sure our dining experience was excellent. A definite return visit will be planned. We also went to the new restaurant, The Bruce. The Prune is competitive to The Bruce and even better for some in our group."

  • "The Prune is a favourite spot of ours in Stratford. Every time we come to Stratford we enjoy a delicious meal here. We can count on attentive service and are never disappointed with the food."

  • "Once again a great meal at a comfortable table with a perfectly trained and informed staff. The seared tuna was done the way it needed to be. The wine list provided the necessary choices. Dessert and tea ended the meal with perfection."

  • "We started with a glass of sparkling wine to celebrate Canada Day. Appetizers were an heirloom beet salad, house cured salmon and their take on oysters Rockefeller which featured Caribou oysters with a miso-flavoured crumb on top that was lightly broiled (delicious). Two of us had the roast chicken with foraged mushrooms (morels - yum) and the others enjoyed the stuffed poblano pepper entree and slow-cooked salmon. Our waiter suggested a Cabernet Franc from Pearl Morissette Winery that was not on their wine list. It was our introduction to the wines of this Niagara-based vineyard and it was a perfect choice. The service was perfect (well-informed, helpful, unobtrusive), the food and wine were delicious and we will be back!"

  • "One of the things that we enjoy most about going out for dinner is having choices on the menu of items we wouldn't or couldn't prepare ourselves. The dessert we had from this menu was not only delicious, it sparked our interest and was totally different from what we ever could have imagined. It was a real treat to go to this restaurant!"

  • "We had been to The Prune in the past and found the service and food not the best. This time we had the best service and amazing food. So far the best dinner in Stratford"

  • "While the ambience and service at The Prune were excellent, the kitchen tries too hard to be gastronomically cutting-edge. If a chef wants to do molecular, please be easy on the foam. Please cook the lobster completely. And please, please stay away from parsnip ice cream and rhubarb jelly. That dessert dish was tortured out of all resemblance to its original elements. The pea and asparagus soup was lovely. Should have stuck with that alone. It didn't need that meat ball in it. I applaud the locavore efforts...but if going that way, then trust the ingredients themselves and stay out of the way! Let them shine -- don't pummel them into submission to the chef's whims...."

  • "Staff was not engaged and bordered on snobby when it came to ordering our meal. We came to celebrate a special occasion and it felt as though the staff could've cared less. Food was well prepared, but uninspired. Ambience was in line with a "modern" retirement home."

  • "This was a wonderful find. We were in Stratford for an evening show. We wanted dinner beforehand. Decided to try The Prune. We were not disappointed. High rates on all counts. Portions were perfect. Food excellent. The service impressive. Very nice atmosphere. Everything was what a fine dining experience should be."

  • "The Prune has always been a very good restaurant but they have upped their game so that it is much better with a new menu and wine list that is even more imaginative and of high quality. All four of us enjoyed dinner immensely and agreed it was the best restaurant in Stratford. The presence of the Chef in the dining room was a very nice touch and always a treat to see the genius behind the excellent food. Service is very efficient and friendly due to their well trained staff. The wine list is composed of a great assortment of well priced local and international wines proving that excellent value and high quality wine can actually happen simultaneously. Many restaurants could learn from the Prune. Kudos from discriminating diners."

  • "For the higher price point the food was good but the service wasn't. Staff was fine but the entee didn't show up for over an hour after ordering. Forced to jam dinner, desert & coffee into 20 minutes to make theater on time."

  • "I cannot express how incredible the evening was. It was for a graduation dinner and it was made very memorable by the awesome staff and wonderful food. The little extras, appetizers and desert offering, were just the icing on the cake. My guests were impressed!! The interesting coincidence was the honoree of this dinner had just graduated from Fanshawe where she was a student of hospitality management!! This is the type of place that she would dearly love to work. Thank you again for making this a night to truly remember."

  • "We have spent many weekends in Stratford and somehow missed this restaurant!!! From the minute we entered the restaurant we knew we would experience a culinary delight. The food was spectacular with a mix of ingredients which fused together perfectly. The ambience was great and the service impeccable. A special thank you to Jen who's service was faultless. We will be back."

  • "The Prune is without a doubt the very best place to dine in Stratford. We eat there at every visit to the Festival, and have never been disappointed. The food, the ambience, and the service are all world class. Can't wait for our next visit!"

  • "Good price to value Prix fixe menu with appreciated 2-3-4 course option with few add-ons. Service was a balance of friendliness, attentiveness and yet non-intrusive. Began with a nice bon mot, refreshing, slightly sip of spicy cucumber soup. I had their signature liver pate with cognac prunes. My wife loved her Terrine of smoked quail & foie gras. Shared a perfectly cooked angus rib steak, served with fabulous onion rings and roasted celery root (wow!). One friend had the buttered whole lobster ($10 supplement) that was phenomenal (and I pride myself on cooking lobster), the other had the chicken, a bit reluctantly because it was white (not dark) meat. She loved it. Great coffee. Presentation through out was elegant."

  • "The service was attentive and impeccable. The flavours were fresh and unusual and I had a great meal. The use of Miso to enhance the black cod was inspired and my hanger steak was cooked to perfection and the vegetables served with it perfect. We found no fault and had a fantastic meal. "

  • "We selected the Prune for a pre-theater anniversary dinner. We were greeted at the door warmly. From appetizer through dessert was a special dining experience. The plated presentation was exquisite! Our server "James" was excellent. Flavors and ambiance will not disappoint!!"

  • "Dear Bryan, Joel and Staff, when driving home on Saturday night after a wonderful evening at The Prune - Lars and I both agreed it reminded us of the movie Babette's Feast. It reminded us also that 20 years ago our daughter was with us for dinner and how we loved everything about The Prune especially the food. And this night, May 24/14, we were with our daughter and had the same experience. Thank you. Memories make it special."

  • "There've been changes. Food remains outstanding, although the eggplant with my tuna dish was perhaps bland and not particularly interesting. My risotto starter and very creative ice cream dessert were delightful. Service is, as ever, attentive, knowledgeable, gracious, and interested. The revamped basic decor is now perhaps a bit sere/bland while the hung art is 'nice.' (Not a Good Thing.) Music struck me as sort of easy listening rock: tedious, to my taste, and not suitable to the quality of the food/wine/service. And it's too loud, at least if you're seated under/near one of the speakers. Price point has been lowered, with a view to widening customer base. That's fine -- but I'd rather dine without a backbeat."

  • "Even though Open Table sent us the correct date & time when we made our reservation, on the day of he reservation, Open Table sent us a reminder with the WRONG DAY AND TIME: i.e. Friday at 6:30 instead of Thursday at 7:30. Luckily the Prune could accomadate us, no thanks to the Open table system"

  • "We hadn't eaten here in a few years on our annual pilgrimage to Stratford, but even though there is new ownership (or management at least) it's lost none of it's charm or good tastes. All of our choices were scrumptious, and it was nice to have a vegetarian option as well as a 2,3, or 4 course prix-fixe choice. We chose 3, and we're glad we did, as the desserts were wonderful."

  • "We loved our trip to the Prune. I had been there many years ago when it was called The Old Prune. I checked your online menu and decided we could afford the Chef school 3 course, so I booked, Alas, the pork had not come in so we chose the 2 course selections. which were outstanding and quite enough. I have hearing issues and appreciated the quite atmosphere where we could actually carry on a conversation without shouting or repeating. I will return with my husband one day. Many thanks for a special memorable meal. Eleanor Huber"

  • "Even if you are stuffed from the very generous portion of the main course, don't pass up the dark chocolate pate with red beet ice cream. The combo may sound odd, but it is the perfect match!"
