  • "Dining room is comfortably but elegantly modern, in soft muted colours. Service is attentive but not overbearing - a perfect blend. But the highlight is the food. An excellent beet salad, a tasty risotto and a tiny complimentary amuse-bouche began the meal. However it was the main dish which set this restaurant apart. Salmon poached perfectly in a light fennel broth so that the bottom was lightly cooked and the top was almost raw. Beside it were ribbons of zucchini resting on a gently sweet tomato marmalade - would love that recipe. My friend and I ordered the three course option for $59 and had a couple of glasses of wine. With tax and tip, my half of the bill was $93, incredibly reasonable for the quality of the food."

The quiet-old-neighbourhood like exterior belies a surprisingly contemporary interior. The atmosphere is a nice balance of comfortably formal ambiance and relaxed unpretentious yet professional personal attention. The service was enhanced by the exceptional knowledge of the menu items and wine list suggestions offered by our server. From the absolutely delicious buns put down at the outset, our meals were exquisite. Big portion lovers might balk, but we liked that we could have four reasonably sized high quality courses and still not feel uncomfortable. FABULOUS."

  • "The Prune (formerly The Old Prune) features an eclectic prix fixe menu with a choice of a 2-course, 3-course, or 4-course selections. The highlights of our meal were the risotto and the black cod. Both were served at the exactly perfect state of done-ness, were beautifully presented, and heavenly tasting.The service was impeccable, but not stuffy. It's been many years since we went to the Old Prune, but we will visit the Prune more often. It's worth the 3-hour drive from Detroit even if we weren't seeing a play. And like most Stratford restaurants, they fully understand the need to get you served on time so you can get to the theater without a problem."

  • "This restaurant is fine dining but not pretentious. My husband had the oysters rockefeller and thought they were the best he's ever had. I had an extremely flavorful beet salad with candied walnuts. My issue was with the salmon that was very under-cooked, my portion was really really rare looked like sashimi on the top 3/4's. Slightly pink on top would have been fine, they did take it back but it came back overcooked, however coupled with shredded zucchini and tomato marmalade the flavors were very tasty. The desserts were fantastic, blueberry panna cotta that was very light. I would highly recommend, the service was fantastic!"

  • "Simply wonderful. The prix fixe menu offers only good choices, and presentation receives careful attention. I ate a beautiful salad of varicolored beets, perfectly cooked fish, and a light (but not innocent!) confection of blueberries, panna cotta and meringue. Servers were both friendly and efficient, conveying a care for the food they served and the enjoyment of diners. I called to ask about adding friends to my OpenTable reservation; despite their limited tables and a pre-theatre rush, they were eager to accommodate us. This restaurant has excellent word-of-mouth in its new incarnation. It deserves its reputation!"

Every appetizer(soup, pate,smoked salmon) was a happy dance in the mouth. Every main was delicious. Service was beyond amazing--friendly, attentive (but not too attentive) mannerly, and full of wine paring expertise. The restaurant was very busy, so would suggest reservations and ask for the garden room. We will go again and tell everyone it was well worth the expense."

  • "We dine at The Prune once each summer, when we make our annual visit to the Stratford Festival, and always have a fine experience. This year we began with smoked salmon with deviled quail eggs and wonderful velvety chicken liver mousse, after the amuse bouche. I had delicious black cod in an Asian preparation and my wife enjoyed a lovely pieced of salmon, complemented by glasses of Malbec. Chocolate bread pudding provided a grand ending to the meal. Service was very professional and we appreciated the new price points of the prix fixe menu. Wish we could dine here more often."

  • "The (Old) Prune has been a longstanding favorite when visiting Stratford. This past weekend we found the service and food up to its typical high standard. The menu has changed a bit and you now have a choice of a mid-dinner course. Our table had the cod, chicken and baked pepper (vegetarian) entrees and all were exceptional. Try the chicken-liver mousse as an appetizer and don't miss the deserts which were just the right finish and incredibly tasty. We shared the cherry pie which had the lightest crust, along with the lavender pannacotta which is a must. We found a great wine value with a spanish rioja. Many thanks to the incredibly talented kitchen and wait staff for a memorable evening."

The wine selection is unique and outstanding. The food was matched by the incredible service. I had requested a quiet table to celebrate our anniversary and we were accommodated. What's more several of the staff offered their congratulations - they had done their homework. The exemplary service continued all night. Our server (Alex) was the best, professional, friendly - he was very knowledgeable about the food - able to answer all questions. In fact his description of the black cod made it sound so good that I decided to have that instead of what I had chosen, it was cooked to perfection and it lived up to his description. The hanger steak excellent also. Not a place for people who are looking for large volumes of food, but for those who want to savor each bite. The service was a little slow, but it allowed us time to savour the excellent wine while waiting . If dining before theatre, allow lots of time for a nice relaxing meal."

In fact, when asking about wine, our waiter/sommelier told us that there was a wine not on the wine list that would be perfect for what we ordered, and it indeed was.   • "Although the atmosphere at the Prune was lovely and the service perfect, the meal was not without its disappointments. We were ready for the portions to be modest/small, as is customary at some of the finer restaurants. But the rolls were just a step above hamburger bun quality- white puffs, little texture or taste, no butter. Two of us had risotto which we found chewy, not creamy, like a scoop of rice with veggies. The polenta was excellent, as was the bass, which all 3 of us chose. The main course is served almost alone on the plate and vegetables are extra. Desserts were good (chocolate bread pudding ) but very small portions. All in all we had a nice meal but not unforgettable. We'd try another place before we returned there."

  • "The food was delicious. Without a doubt the Cod was cooked to perfection with a Thai flavor to it. And the sweet pea soup had a wonderful, light flavor to it. The risotto was a let down, rather bland (there is no salt or pepper on the table) and way to many peas in it. If there are only 2 of you, beware of where they seat you. It's an old house made into a restaurant. Very cozy and eclectic in atmosphere, but don't get the table that stares into the kitchen, is squished into a corner, and is the main path where all the waiters rush by on there way to the dining room."
