Diner Reviews
  • "Being new to Halifax I asked a few locals for a few suggestions. They don't stear you wrong in Halifax let me tell you - they are serious about their food here. I absolutley loved The Press Gang. The ambience was just right and the food was fantastic. The service was second to none and I'll be back in a heart beat. I just have to get my flight booked!"

  • "Every time I have been at this restaurant (5-6 times) the quality of food, wine, service, attention to detail - well everything really was absolutely excellent!! 10 out of 10 and more!!"

  • "I am hesitant to say it for fear of it being harder to get a table but it is one of my favorite Halifax restaurants. I visit Halifax several times a year and always place the Press Gang on my list of fav spots for dinner. Food and service is excellent."

  • "This is the kind of restaurant that forces me to come back. As a sporadic visitor to Halifax, I always stop here on my travel day for a light meal of fresh oysters and one or two of the excellent appetizers for a light repast. Then I return a day or two later to have one of the stunning main courses. This is the fifth time for this cycle! The menu changes, but the quality of the food and the enchanting combinations of protein, vegetables, sauces and seasonings can be counted upon."

  • "The Press Gang truly is a Halifax gem. The menu reflects the maritime heritage of this historic port. The food is delicious, and the service is perfect. Fantastic bar and bar staff. The weekend house band are brilliant."

  • "Had been to the press gang in August and had been happy with food but not the service. This time everything was great, they have a new menu with some reworked favourites and our party of four enjoyed everything that was ordered. Our server was attentive without being obtrusive. We will go back soon!"

  • "Hey the staff seemed as tired as the timbers and the granite in this little gem of a restaurant. A tired waiter and a down right depressing bus girl had me flat lining on a date at 75.00 per! Char & rack of lamb were fantastic! Music billed as a 7:30 start really didn't happen until 8:30.... 4 piece jazz ensemble had very good vibe. Great scotch choices.... Would drop in again for scotch at the bar but not for dinner!"

  • "We went to Neptune and decided to stay in HFX for dinner. It had been a few years since our last time at Press Gang. My Aunt had never been. We were not disappointed. The food was excellent and service was attentive without being bothersome."

  • "Ordered "The Drill" with meat prepared rare. The main course was Short Ribs, Beef Tenderloin and a cut of Pork I don't recall. The beef and pork were overcooked. We didn't have time to send it back. I expected better for the $150 price tag. Otherwise, a great experience in a near perfect setting."

  • "Location is fantastic and the very old building is a treat! Wine list is disapointing and they were all out of our first three selections. This was unacceptable. Otherwise its a special place to dine."

  • "I went with my wife for dinner. They put us in the basement so we were not able to see the show or hear the music. Our server was professional and on time. We ordered the beet salad, the halibut and the chops dishes. Now I thought the presentation of the beet salad could have been much better. As for my wife's fish plate. She said that the coscous was lumpy, the fish was ok, but that there was something missing. Something to wrap all the tastes together. My chops were ok but I didn't like the mashed sweet potato. Too much butter. In any case, it was an Ok experience. Surely not worth the price. I guess it can be a good option for oyster lovers...."

  • "I have been dining in Halifax for years and love the wide range of restaurant and dining experiences the city offers. The Press Gang has become my new favourite and will remain to be for quite some time."

  • "The service was fantastic with impeccable timing; not too slow and not too fast. A relaxing dining experience. The menu was great. An addition to the advertised fixed price menu was also available and the food was the best part. However, I and one of my table-mates were curious as to whether or not the special was the same price as the rest of the "prix fixe" menu. Although it did not change my decision to chose the special I was surprised at the final bill considering advertised fixed price should have added up to less. Overall my supper and the experience was outsanding and I would recommend this restaurant with the caveat that the bill may be more expensive than expected. Excellent supper, outstanding service, and worth every penny."

  • "My fiancée and I ate here this past weekend. We have no qualms about going out a few of times a year and spending $150-$200 for a nice dinner. The bill here came in around $150 for food and a glass of wine each. The food, while good, isn't something I'd pay that amount for again any time soon. The tenderloin steak was very small, basically a 3-4 bite steak. Winter salad was a tad bland. Presentation was okay, but nothing spectacular. Service was very good, noise level allowed easy conversation, and the atmosphere is good with exposed wooden beams, etc. May give them a second chance some time in the future, but for now, we have other places with which we are happier to spend that amount of money."

  • "We came to the press gang for an early valentine's dinner and we had a wonderful evening. The group close to us were a little boisterous but it was not overwhelming. The only suggestion or disappointment was the lamb on the henry platter....it is too small! The most flavourful item on the platter to be sure but two pieces rather than just one would lead to a world of difference. Overall we had fabulous wine, food and service."

  • "Our window table was warm and cozy suiting the old beamed atmosphere of the interior. The service was friendly and attentive. Our meals were enjoyable , two of us having the cod and two with beef steaks. The cod was slightly too peppery and one steak was perfect and one slightly charred on the outside but overall very good flavors and presentation. Desserts were very delayed but complimentary sparkling wine was offered. When they arrived they were fabulous , a trio of creme brulees. The Press Gang has always been a special place for our family."

  • "We had heard about the press gang for years and when we finally had a night out on the town we headed right there. We were tucked into a little private nook. The waitress was attentive but respectful of space. There were so many amazing things on the menu we decided to go for the let the cook decide your four course meal. Everything was divine and there was so much food it could easily have fed four. The energy in the place was awesome. The staff was so professional and present. I would totally recommend it to anyone seeking a fine dining experience."

  • "Meal was very good (tasty), prepared perfectly and presentation was excellent. OK value for price of the meal but I knew that I was going to a more 'upscale' restaurant. Unfortunately, oysters on the half-shell had a bit more shell in them than I am used to. Overall, very good experience."

You feel very welcome with attentive service that is not over-bearing and the time between servings was spot-on in my opinion. The food is absolutely amazing and the range of dishes superb"

  • "My wife and I have been coming to this restaurant since we first moved to Halifax in 2007. It's not cheap! So be prepared to spend $200 for 2 glasses of wine each, half a dozen delicious Nova Scotia oysters, a shared winter salad, and two mains. I had the wild boar chop which was served with cauliflower au gratin and seasonal veg. My wife had the pan seared halibut with rice and seasonal veg. The boar was as scrumptious as the best T-bone steak. The halibut was moist and firm. There are many excellent desserts on offer, but we opted out as the festive season has left us sweetened out. But we've had the cheesecake and creme brûlée and tiramisu in the past and a neighbouring table of four gushed about their desserts. Can't wait to go back!"

Everyone had different meals and were very satisfied. Our bottle of wine was really enjoyable and our waiter was right there when you needed him and he was very pleasant. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone that enjoys awesome food."

  • "When you first step through the door you know you are in for a unique dinning experience. The wood and stone facade are like being transported back in time. You can almost hear the hustle and bustle of the harbour 100 years ago. The staff are friendly and are there to make sure you have the best dinning experience possible. They are not in your face but have intuitive timing to serve you. Once you bite into your first course you know you have found the gem of Halifax"

  • "Old brick and stone walls with low open beam ceiling make for a warm and inviting atmosphere. The noise level was moderate to low. The service was casual and friendly with good attention to detail. The Malpeque oysters were excellent and the scallops cooked perfectly. The halibut was a touch overdone. We appreciated being able to buy bubbly by the glass and wine by the half bottle. A very pleasant dining experience. We are a mature couple who eat out often in good restaurants in Halifax and while travelling domestically and abroad."
