Diner Reviews
  • "Wonderful dinner, outstanding service. Jazz trio a very entertaining addition to the experience without being too loud. Lobster was nicely presented, sweet & tender. Will return on our next visit to Halifax"

  • "This restaurant went beyond our expectations. We expected to have a wonderful experience, but this place was unbelievable. The staff made us feel right at home. The food and drink selections that our server recommended were excellent. Although we only make it to Halifax every three or four years, we will make it a point to have a fantastic dining experience each time at The Press Gang."

  • "Coming from Vancouver with loads of hot spots and expensive restaurants this restaurant is world class. The buttered lobster was amazing. Spent our 2nd anniversary there. Great find!!"

  • "Food was very good. So was the service. However it is very loud. The decor is great, stone pillars, feels like a cave or wine cellar from 1800's, but acoustics not good. Good for girls night or boys night, but not a romantic dining place. Just too darn loud"

  • "Great cocktails! Food was amazing. Baked mussels and pork belly were amazing. Tuna steak and beef tenderloin were cooked perfectly!"

  • "It was such an awesome dining experience . We had an amazing night for our 25 anniversary"

  • "I always look forward to my trips to Halifax so that I can include a visit to the Press Gang, one of my all-time favourite restaurants, but this time I left disappointed. Food is always exceptional, and the atmosphere is wonderful; this time was no exception - oysters to start, then the pork and scallop main; I would have also liked to order desert, a glass of ice wine, and a cappuccino, but my server was so inattentive that after 30 minutes of waiting with an empty plate, empty wine glass, and empty water glass, I was so disappointed and sad, that I just asked for my bill. I left not feeling full or happy; it’s a shame when service ruins what would have otherwise been a fantastic experience."

  • "My wife and I were in Halifax for the weekend and wanted a romantic date night restaurant. A friend strongly recommended The Press Gang, and it did not disappoint. We ordered The Drill (only request was to hold any oysters that may be included). Each of the 13 items that we were then fed was perfectly prepared and presented. Our servers were very attentive. This meal was a treat and it delivered on all accounts."

  • "We dined at the bar on August 8th and experienced one of the best cocktail and worst kitchen performances of the year. Our bartender was friendly, engaging, skilled and a great salesman. Knowing our expectations, he steered us away from dishes that would truly disappoint, but what we did land eating was still bad. Dry, tasteless Duck Confit, salty Beef entrees and boring Desserts. The worst part of our experience was that the kitchen was completely buried. Everyone's food took an embarrassingly long time to be served. Management bought a lot of drinks, while running around the dining room apologizing versus going into the kitchen and help get the food out. The live music was OUTSTANDING ! If you go, sit at the bar and eat oysters."

  • "While in Halifax we used Open Table to find a near by restaurant. We were pleasantly suprised by the unique dining experience in this historic location. The wine list was extensive, the scotch flights were interesting and well paired. The food was very good and the wait staff was friendly, prompt and efficient. Will definitely return!"

  • "From the follow-up call to confirm our reservation through to the desert our meal was the perfect experience. Our server was fantastic quickly taking care of our requests. The food quality and presentation was superb."

  • "Really nice setting, great service and the food was outstanding... Had the deconstructed caesar salad to start which was decent - heavy garlic in the dressing which I did enjoy. For a main I had the special - scallops on a bed of curried jasmine rice - outstanding. The scallops were seared to perfection. It was dressed with some microgreens which it could have done without but outstanding nonetheless."

  • "Our food was good, service was outstanding. Our knowledgable server gave us a history lesson on the building, and a quick tour of the dining room. Her wine recommendations with our food was spot on., and was quite entertaining throughout our meal. We had the beef tenderloin and thee halibut which were both good."

  • "Vacationing in Nova Scotia, we were delighted to have The Press Gang recommended to us by our son. Our table was quiet and private, but we still met some engaging people nearby and that added to our experience. The Tuscan Mussel appetizer was beyond delicious, and out two entrees, Medallions of Pork Tenderloin with Pan Seared Scallops, and Fresh Nova Scotia Halibut, were beautiful in presentation and in taste and quality. We also benefited from tastings of a small batch Irish whiskey and a limited Canadian whiskey. That was an added and very welcome bonus, presented by a gentleman who was charming and engaging."

  • "I brought clients in for dinner, and we were all very impressed with both our meals and the service. Will be coming back on Tuesdays for its Whisky Tuesday night, and given samples of whisky to try. Tried the feature scallop dis with the lobster risotto which was amazing. I highly recommend The Press Gang over other restaurants in this city for the food, and prompt, knowledgable service."

  • "Press Gang is in one of the oldest buildings in Halifax, very cool decor and ambiance. But what a disappointment the food was! My husnband liked his oysters on the half shell, but that was about it. I had a forgettable salad, then we struggled to find anything appealing in the ordinary looking entrees. The cooking was mediocre. The wine choices by the glass were way overpriced (and I know this because the selections were all too familiar and competely unimaginative). We spent near $200 for a filling but unsatisfyingmeal. We think the place is coasting on it's location and long established name recognition. Better places to eat in Halifax!"

  • "This place has it all....built in 1757 so the history and ambience is excellent. The food is superb and well priced for what is presented and described within their menu ! The Jazz trio on Thurs-Sat is some of the best Jazz that I have heard and I've been to my share of Jazz places in Toronto! These guys will not disappoint...promise :) Great wine selection, bartenders know their craft and the service we received was very courteous and prompt !"

  • "We booked this restaurant after reading great reviews. Unfortunately, the food was not up to our standards.Crab cakes were terrible (tasted like from a frozen food box) Oysters were okay, needed spicier cocktail sauce or horse radish. Scallops were good. Lamb was alright, a bit overcooked. Salmon and Halibut were pretty good but the side dishes were horrible. Desserts were unimaginative and not very tasty. Overall, the price was outrageously high. I wouldn't go back. However, I have to say we are accustomed to cooking our own delicious meals so someone else might find the food better than we did. In the end, we were very disappointed because we don't eat out often and when we do, we try to pick a restaurant that has superior reviews. :-("

  • "My wife and I took a weekend away. I chose this restaurant for our anniversary dinner and they made it special. Appetizers (crab cakes; mussels in blue cheese/leek) main (halibut;lobster in truffle butter) were prepared with great skill with excellent sauces and garnishes. Our server was funny friendly knowledgeable... everything you could hope for. We moved down to the main floor to finish our wine and some dessert while listening to some good music. A memorable evening."

  • "Food was excellent. Service and ambience was less than it should be for the price. We were in the very back of the restaurant in a cornet which was not appealing at all. Felt rushed."

  • "While visiting Halifax we had the pleasure of eating at the Press Gang twice. The first time we were a group of 6 people and we all enjoyed an appetizer, main course and dessert plus some fabulous wine. The second time was a romantic dinner with just my husband and myself. We enjoyed "The Drill". We were not disappointed with any of it. The service was fantastic, the meal was fabulous and the wine was delicious. Overall it was an excellent, romantic experience."

  • "We enjoy getting out! The food was delicious and our service was terrific! We are the type to chat with friends about our experience and believe me we will spread the word. Our steaks were cooked to perfection. Thanks again and see you soon."

  • "Yummy mussels and steak :) Our waiter added to our experience - he was very friendly and funny. I also like the teamwork of servers to bring your food and clear your plates - it seemed really efficient (something that I normally don't think of, but I appreciated the service of all the staff). Couple the dining with the Neptune tickets and we had an excellent night out!"

  • "The atmosphere was fantastic live music was playing, but there were quieter rooms as well. The service was fantastic, they weren't in your face but managed to be there exactly when you wanted them. Vegetarian options were limited, the one vegetarian main was a seared tofu on rice noodles. Flavours were good, the tofu could have been a marinated a little more, but everything else was so flavourful, I didn't mind the tofu itself being a little bland. My friend's fish seemed to be cooked perfectly. Desserts were delicious, but all of them seemed very heavy/rich, we would have liked to see a lighter option. Overall a great experience, it would be a great place for a lot of different occasions. "
