  • "They prepared not only the most delicious dinner but also the most lovely table. They have a private area for larger parties to dine. The ten of us enjoyed The Portage. Our waiter was attentive and kind. We've been here a handful of times since they opened. My favorites are the rib eye, Amish fried chicken, duck fat fries, and the Kobe burger. For desert I had the vanilla bean panne cotta which was light and fresh. I had a taste of my sisters sorbet as well which was incredible (mango, cantaloupe, and champagne). Neighborhood gem that we are thrilled to have close by."

  • "Went on Friday night with Aunt from out of town, she was over an hour late but they we so nice and understanding. The drinks were great and they even had local IPAs. Kale salad is difenently recommended and also the scallops. Would go back in a hurry. I can't say enough about the friendly staff!!! They were as nice as good friends. Diner there was the highlight of my weekend."

  • "The service was very efficient, the food was very good, it was served on these oversized dinnerplates and had very small portions. We did not have any appetizers, but had the blueberry cobbler for desert, which was very good. The bar had a nice assortment of wines, but was lacking in some of the more established after dinner drinks. Since we were seated in the "library" the noise level there was not an issue."

  • "The Amish Fried Chicken was juicy and the bacon gravy added to the flavor. The chocolate pretzel bread pudding is a must-try dessert. I'll have to come back when the weather is better to sit down on their great outdoor patio."

  • "A couple things that doesn't make it as great as it could be: to save money, I presume, they have a scallop dish, made with bay scallops. My east coast husband was shocked they would serve those. Second, when it says "pork tenderloin", pork chops should not be served. A tenderloin is, or should be cooked whole to hold in the moisture. We were served dried out pork chops. The service was also poor. It took 25 minutes to get our drinks from when we sat to the time the waiter came back. The desserts were amazing! All in all the food was hit or miss. The service was slow, but the waiter then tried to rush us at points. I would recommend dinner elsewhere, come here for drinks and dessert."

  • "Big crowd but had reservation. Except it didn't seem to matter. Few minutes early and told they expected to seat us on time. Not even close. Seated 20-30 min later while several same size parties arriving as much as 15-20 min after us were seated first. Were they that far behind on reservations? Maybe. Then seated in the "overflow" back room. Ambience killer! Felt we were getting the "not regulars" treatment. Waiter clearly flustered, out of breath - rushed through explanations and service. Positives-good variety on the menu, food was excellent. Ordered fluke, outstanding in a very tasty broth and pork belly with polenta, very good although a couple bites were dry and chewy, overdone. Will try again hopeful that service will match food."

  • "Delicious food, great service. It was smaller and louder than we expected, but we will definitely be back! We had the mac and cheese for an appetizer, it was so creamy and wonderful. The amish chicken is fantastic. We mentioned is was our anniversary in our reservation, they remembered it and gave us a creme brulee for dessert, which was very nice and thoughtful. Our server was very attentive. We were happy overall with the experience."

  • "This is a notable neighborhood restaurant that we frequent often with our friends and neighbors. The staff always goes out of their way to make each guest fell like they are long time customers. Executive Chef Joey Beato and his his staff have elevated the dinning experience, fit for foodies. My favorite dish is the Amish Fried Chicken with mashed potatoes. Reservations are always a good idea."

  • "Start with a great cocktail at a great price point for the city! Crab cakes have more crab than anything else. Entrees are on the smaller side, but so delicious you are very satisfied. Homemade popcorn gelato (yes I said popcorn) is amazing especially if you pair it with their chocolate gelato offering."

  • "My family and I have been going here since it first opened, and we love it! The duck fat fries are a total gem, as is the macaroni and the Amish Chicken. Service can sometimes be a little slow--I know when we went last they had kitchen malfunctions, but it was 25 minutes past ordering our apps that the server told us this. But the Portage makes up for it in delicious food and friendly faces! One note--it can get dim and loud in there, enough so that private conversations are hard."

  • "the only negatives were they weren't aware of our reservation request for a corner table and we had to point that out to them when we got there (but we ended up getting a corner table anyway), and that they closed at 9:00 that night and we felt like we had to leave a bit earlier than we would've liked. i realize this is essentially nitpicking, but feel it's at least somewhat important to note."

  • "As always, the service is fantastic. We've been here multiple times, and the waitstaff is always welcoming and very knowledgeable about the menu. Jesse was our waiter that evening and he was amazingly attentive. I would say if you are concerned about noise, see if you could sit in the back. It is a much more intimate experience, as it is considerably quieter. Food is phenomenal and there are usually specials, which change often."

  • "We were a party of 6 and even though the place is small they had no problem getting us set up relatively close to our reservation time. They didn't want to jam us into a space so they had us a wait just a few minutes so they could get us a spot that was comfortable, very thoughtful. We had no problem waiting a few minutes because the bartender was very friendly and very knowledgeable. She seemed to really enjoy what she was doing, The food was very good. 2 rib eye's, 1 pork shoulder, 2 chicken and a scallop so we had quite a variation and every one was very pleased. The rib eye was tender and well cooked. All in all, a very nice experience."

  • "The food and service were absolutely OUTSTANDING. Innovative dishes, decent wine list, attentive service. The noise level was horrific. Small restaurant, tables VERY close together (you will hear everyone else's conversations), and you have to shout to be heard by your dining companion. It was snowing heavily and the restaurant was absolutely packed with people waiting for tables. Make sure you book reservations."

  • "Saw this place reviewed on Check Please. Decided to try with friend for her birthday. A real surprise in a neighborhood place. Service was great. Food delicious. Had the short ribs and the pork belly--both fantastic. The duck fries were wonderful as was the bread pudding. Will be coming back again and again. Nice to find fine dining outside of downtown Chicago."

Unless you get the Burger and fries, expect to be presented with nouvelle cuisine size portions which you'll finish in less than 5 minutes even if you try to savor your meal."

  • "Hands down the best pork belly you'll have. The serving size may seem a little disappointing at first glance but the first bite will chase all disappointing thoughts away. The pork belly is on top of a bed of creamy polenta and a little onion on the side. My girlfriend got the chicken because it was our first time and she was playing it safe. The chicken, despite it being deep fried, tasted like a fresh bird, but I would forego it next time to try the fish or the pork belly again. The service was great. There was a little bit of a wait at first, despite making a reservation, but it wasn't too long. We talked with the bartender a bit and tried the katz pajama."

  • "Unfortunately, we were disappointed in the food. The new chef must be overwhelmed. He has a heavy hand with some spices and especially truffles. My son's steak was really bad and new date recipe just does not cut it. The place has become so popular, it is jam packed, you can not even get up to go to the restroom without other tables having to move out of the way-do not know how their wait staff does it! Of course we will go back but not until warm weather when the garden is open so it is not so congested."

  • "So my wife and I went there and took another couple for her birthday. We were pleasantly surprised at what we saw when we entered. It's a small place, but decorated well. We get seated right away (get there early) and order the Brussel sprouts appitizer, it was very tasty. Then we order out entrees and to our amazement, we were so stunned, we were all looking at each other and started laughing, where's the food? When we finished eating and joking about the small portions, our waiter (Jessie, who was also as perfect as a waiter can be) asked us how we were doing. I told him jokingly, (but actually serious) everything's good, we are now ready for the entree! A man at the hostess station, may have been the owner, also laughed."
