A word from The Port - St. James Hotel
The Port is a fine dining restaurant located on the lower level of the historic St. James Hotel built in 1875. There are many original treasures to be found in the restaurant. Among them is the iron-gated wine cellar, once used as the hotel's bank vault. At the Port restaurant we serve Contemporary American and Midwestern food, from regional favorites to reinterpretations of classical dishes; all of our seafood is flown in fresh primarily from Alaska and the west coast. The Port is best known for sourcing the best quality seasonal ingredients available. Our menu changes frequently to reflect the current offerings from our region, delivering the best of our local bounty.

The Port is a Winner of Wine Spectator Award of Excellence 2014.This is the 11th year that The Port has earned this prestigious honor. We are also listed as one of the few restaurants in Minnesota with very reasonable wine prices. www.winespectator.com

Diner Reviews
  • "The restaurant was quiet and intimate and I appreciate that. The service was good as well. I was seated by friendly staff and then was waited on by friendly and helpful server. My biggest gripe is with the food. Both dishes that were ordered lacked seasoning and had a strong flavor presence of char from the grill. Some people may enjoy these flavors, but it just wasn't right for someone who is looking for powerful flavors beyond what steak and potatoes have to offer."

  • "After reading the ratings and reviews we were really excited expecting a meal to really wow us. The presentation was very impressive but the food quality was average and portions very small. The chocolate lava cake was excellent but the fried ice cream average and had a soggy coating. Overall we enjoyed our breakfast in the Veranda the next morning and banquet dinner at the wedding we attended there much more."

  • "Having eaten here many times, This experience was not up to par. We felt rushed by the server even though she knew we were there celebrating an anniversary. My husband ordered halibut which was raw in the middle. I ordered the short rib which was okay, although the sides were cool to cold. Even though there are lots of open tables, a large, loud party was seated right next to us which really put a damper on our dining experience. We would only recommend this to others based on previous visits, not this time."

  • "Scallop was under cooked and noodle were clumped together!"

  • "Had issues with both our entrees. Bison Ribeye was very tough and vegetables undercooked. The Tenderloin portions were very small."

  • "We received outstanding food and service. This was a repeat visit."

  • "We didn't realize that Wednesday was date night. They featured a menu that offered two appetizers, two entrees and a desert to share for $70. For $10 more you could also have two glasses of champagne (or a non-alcoholic beverage) and two glasses of wine. We felt it was a great deal. Mussels and roasted beet salad were our first choices. We both had the tenderloin steak with Dauphinoise potatoes & broccoli. The steaks were tender and done perfectly. The potato wedge absolutely wonderful. The ambiance was very nice and service was good. We would definitely go back again."

  • "Loved the home-made pasta; too bad there was so little pasta in the seafood dish. Specialty cocktails were very weak."

  • "Our party of four was greeted promptly and we had our choice of tables. It was half-price wine night and the selection suggested by our server was spot on! Everyone's food was delicious and beautifully presented. We were treated to a live piano player and perfect music for the evening. We had a lovely evening with great food and drink, impeccable service and music!"

  • "First romantic date night in a long time. The we both had a delightful seafood dish. Appetizer of the Big eye tuna, and creme brûlée for desert. It was all delicious. If your looking for quality it's a great place with just the right size portions."

  • "Our table was ready for us on time. We had noted in our reservation that this was our anniversary and it was acknowledged at our seating and by the manager later. We ordered a cocktail and were given time to enjoy it rather then being rushed through dinner. We tried the pork starter it was not a normal dish for us and it was an awesome combination if flavored. All of our food arrived piping hot and the flavors were amazing. My husband had the halibut with roasted fennel. He did not know what fennel was but loved it! I has the need trenderloin and the chef put a perfect crispy crust on it while the meat was tendr and cooked as ordered. We were offer the option of a complimentary dessert or a bottle of champaign for out room. Thank you!"

  • "This quiet restaurant in the cellar of the St James Hotel is only open a few days a week. Check their web site. We enjoy the excellent service and the care and presentation that is evident in every dish. Interesting and varied menu. The quality of the food not the quantity is the reason to visit the Port of Red Wing Restaurant. Take your time and check out the wine list. "

  • "We needed to be out at a certain time to get to a show. They were great; food was great, too. One thing that was a disappointment was the size of the dessert. It was delicious, but way too small a portion. It was more like a morsel. Otherwise, it was worthwhile."

  • "My wife and I live in Winona, our close friends live in St Paul and we meet at the St James for dinner. The food, service has always be excellent and we have never been disappointed. The "Date Night" promotion on Wednesday evening is an outstanding value we had not expected. We will continue to use the St. James as our place to meet as it has always been a great experience."

  • "We were pleasantly greeted and our reservation was acknowledged by a table near the fireplace with no waiting. Our server was pleasant and helpful with our table's many menu questions resulting from the interesting menu and its unique food combinations. Subsequent service was prompt and non-obtrusive. Soup and main courses were served while the food was still hot. Butterfish with fennel was perfectly cooked and very tasty. The pheasant soup special was excellent. Two at our table had the wrapped chicken breast and both gave it excellent reviews. The volcano cake dessert which tasted great was smaller than expected and might not be quite enough to split for a couple but doesn't require as much time on the treadmill the next day."

  • "Although I have to give The Port high points for an interesting menu, they should probably put a couple of things on the menu that will appeal to palates that are not as evolved as others might be. Most of our group had a difficult time finding something they weren't afraid to order. I found the menu creative and exciting but I'm a bit of a "foodie". We were a table of four and only one of us enjoyed our meal. Also, there is a point when you can take the "char" too far. The steaks, short ribs and even the broccolini were charred beyond the flavor enhancing point."

  • "Dinner was rather enjoyable! The mussels appetizer was wonderful. The Lobster Bisque soup was tasty but didn't taste like Lobster bisque. And the short ribs were cooked perfectly. I will definitely return!"

  • "Try the seafood selection, and you will not be disappointed. The buffalo tenderloin was also very tasteful. Wish they had separated our tables a bit more, but the experience was great."

  • "A limited menu of about a dozen entrees with an equal number of starters provides plenty of choices for a fine meal. I had lamb sliced over wilted greens all over a risotto type dish made of wheat and wild mushrooms. Delicious. Wife had tenderloin steak with broccolini and an interesting layered potato dish. She pronounced it as wonderful. We both started with a lobster soup which was very good. Service was helpful and friendly. All workers are treated to all new menu items when a new menu is produced which makes them able to answer questions about each dish."

  • "We really enjoyed the food, but our server seemed a bit distracted at times. Considering the cost of the meal as my husband put it, service and ambiance were nothing too special, but nothing was bad. Food was fantastic. The food was creative and delicious. We would definitely eat there again especially if we were looking for something different to eat."

  • "Spent our 27th Wedding Anniversary at the St James and dined @ The Port for Dinner. Amazing Hotel with an incredible restaurant to boot. Outstanding wine list only topped by a wonderful dinner!"

  • "The Waygu short ribs were amazing - simply the best quality beef I've had. The wine list is worthy for the area. Service was the right balance of attention and privacy. Nice work."

  • "This was our first time here - we need to try again. The Valentine menu was not the full normal menu - bummer. Our server was miserably un-attentive. However, another table's server was way more energetic and checked in on us several times. For now, I do not recommend this restaurant but will try one more time on a less busy night. Valentine's Day was totally packed all night long - that could have been why we were a litte disappointed. The food did tast great with the exception that my side dish was extremely salty - and I love salt."

  • "EXQUISITE Valentines 5 course meal. Waytu beef was the most amazing meat I ever ate. And the crab bisque was the best soup you could imagine! Thank you so much! Best dining experience I have had in years, mostly because of the food."

  • "My wife and I requested a table at THE PORT of St. James Hotel. We had fairly early reservations at 5pm. A very large wedding was upstairs and the parking ramp was completely full. (had to walk 2 blocks to find a spot) We ordered the Mussels for an appetizer, she had the Kobe Beef fillet, and I had the Bison Rib Eye, both were succulent and well executed. The downs: cold cauliflower on the Kobe Beef (apparently the chef does it this way, we had to ask to make sure) weren't ready for that."

  • "Food is well-composed, good flavors, but heavy-handed on salt. Nice wine list. Salmon had a beautiful crust on it, and beggar's purses make a good vegetarian choice."

  • "Several years ago on a motorcycle trip along the Great River Road up from Chicago we stumbled on this restaurant. We've made it a destination every since, usually getting up there 2-3 times a year. Never a disappointment, the food is also fantastic with impressive specials on the weekends. Their Caesar salad is unique and incredible."

  • "Great Buffalo Steak! We thoroughly enjoyed our experience at The Port. We went there for our anniversary trip and enjoyed the food and ambiance. Only downfall if that the room was extremely cold. Bring a sweater or jacket to stay warm!"

  • "The a la carte menu is quite limited and the prices higher than similar restaurants. We had the sea bass and the salmon. Both were tasty but had too much garnish and sauce. Portions were average. As this was an anniversary dinner (we had to tell the server this even though it was mentioned on the reservation), we were told that dessert was complimentary; however, it consisted of a small creme brulee to share, hardly enough for one person. They were not busy and service was okay. We would have liked the service to be a little less hurried and more attentive."

  • "Overall, the dining experience at The Port was excellent. Service was friendly and very professional and the setting is unique. The food shows the creativity and imagination of the chef, and all four of us enjoyed each starter course and entree. The only criticism we all had was that portion sizes - with the exception of the steak - seemed a bit too small. We are not among those who rank a restaurant by the quantity of food at all. But here the pendulum has swung a bit too far in the opposite direction."
    Dined on 9/19/2013
  • "The dining area at the port is relatively small but very 'Prohibition' era glamorous. If you get the chance sit near the fireplace, especially if your partner forgot a sweater or shawl as it can get chilly. Definitely take the chance to try the more adventurous items on the menu as they change regularly - and there has never been an item we have not enjoyed. Heck the chef even managed to prepare a version of my least favorite food ever (beets!) that I would have gladly asked for second helpings of!"

  • "I guess it's the closest thing to fine dining in Red Wing. I'd try the bar instead."

  • "The food was very good, but for myself-just a little to fancy. It needed to have a good NewYork Strip or a Porterhouse to make it more worth my style."

  • "The menu, food and service were all good. Overall, higher end meal with a reasonbale price. Portions were large."

  • "Our dinner experience was excellent. Extensive selection of wines was good for our group's particular tastes. The King Salmon was superb and I'm not usually a person that orders salmon. Service is great, server had superior knowledge of menu and wine list and answered other off topic questions. We also had two children, one only a year old and they accommodated us with yogurt and granola for the little one and chicken strips for the older. Well worth the price for a special occasion or just to spoil oneself."

  • "Major disappointment, Caesar salad was made with the tough wilted lettuce, bison ribeye tough with a sweet glaze. Do not ask for exceptions as the kitchen staff seems quite rigid. Overall not worth your time."
