A word from The Plough and the Stars
At the Plough & the Stars the owners are determined to bring the true taste of Ireland to Philadelphia, our food is described as Western European with a strong Irish influence. We were awarded by Citysearch as Philadelphia's Best Brunch. We have been featured numerous times on the Food Network and have cooked at the James Beard House in New York. Enjoy our famous Mussells Veloute, Striped Bass with Potato Crusted Scales or Guinness Casserole. Or if you prefer you can dine on our casual bar fare. We have installed the most sophisticated beer system in the US, imported directly from Ireland and installed by Guinness technicians. Each pint of the 12 beers on tap is perfect. The atmosphere created by the simple, yet powerful decor and fills a visitor to the Plough & the Stars, with an overwhelming feeling of awe and inspiration.   • "My husband chose The Plough & the Stars for his informal birthday dinner. We love it here and were not disappointed! Our server was very nice and attentive. The food was excellent, as always. I highly recommend the braised chicken, yum! Guinness pot roast, pork tenderloins got high marks, too. Very casual, artsy vibe, historic architecture, a fireplace, and big screen tv. We will definitely be back ;-)"

  • "Lovely brunch here- menu has good choices of traditional brunch items with Irish twists to some. There is some outside seating on high tops. They also have Iridh music sometimes, tho not when we were there. We have eaten here several times and the quality is quite consistent."

  • "I booked a reservation based on the menu selections listed on Open Table. This menu, meant to be helpful in selecting a restaurant, was nonexistent in the restaurant. Hoping for some inspired fare, the menu was ho-hum: burgers, fish and chips, stews, pubby food that while good wasn't great. Very disappointing for a graduation luncheon. The restaurant isn't actually on Chestnut Street ... it's on 2nd street, mid-block. No way to know that until spending 20 minutes looking for it. Our server was very efficient and friendly; she was the best part of our entire experience. Sorry to say I would not recommend Plough and The Stars to anyone; I'd be too embarrassed."

  • "We came here because they just started carrying the Scottish beer, Tennents. Met up wih another couple and were seated on the upper level almost directly above singer/guitar player. While he was good, it was absolutely impossible to hold a con ersation. We went elsewhere for coffee. Hostess/manager stopped me pn the way out and I complained about it and all she could say was "I asked him to turn it down". Who is in charge - management or entertainers? I think, since the bar was hopping with people singing along, drinkers are more profitable than diners so the choice was made."

  • "The Food was outstanding, but the food service not so much...timing of the meals all getting to the table was about five min apart...often we were waiting for someone to help us with drinks and are food server tried to take our order (party of seven) without paper then soon realized she needed something to take the orders with...not a big deal, just starts off the meal poor. as I said the food was really great, the music was fun and drinks were well prepared. "

  • "Good place to go for beer and pub food. We were there for a birthday party which was a bar only event. Got there early enough to have some food. I ordered the Plough Tapas plate which was very good. Nice amount of roasted peppers, olives, hummus, mozzarella (fresh), and smoked salmon. I had an order of their buffalo wings and wasn't very impressed. They were heavily breaded with sauce poured over. Not a big fan of breaded wings. My son had the shepherds pie which he said was very good. Nicely done crust and excellent savory flavor inside."

  • "Great irish pub year round! sundays irish session music the best , celtic football viewing. From the bar menu I had fish and chips on a saint Paddy's weekend, Unfortunately they were very greasy, but the fish inside the fried breading was good. The beer was good! We also had curry chicken which was pretty tasty. A fun time and staff very friendly."

  • "we expect pretty food comfort food at an Irish bar, but this exceeds expectation. The tomato soup is the best I have had, and the dinners are amazing - guiness roast with potatoes and braised chicken - outstanding. An Irish band sits at a table and plays which is great without being so loud you cannot have a conversation. The building is an old bank, so high ceilings and a great Old Philadelphia look with an Irish flare. The only "hoky" part was the giant screen with a loop of Irish scenery - took away from the old world charm of the place a bit for me. We are planning to come back - it is really a great find."

This time was no exception - the Guinness Casserole was great as usual and my guest loved the Sesame Tuna Loin the potato hash and balsamic reducition were perfect. For dessert we tried the flourless chocolate cake and the philadelphia style ice cream - both very good. If you're looking for a place to enjoy great food in a relaxed environment you can't go wrong with The Plough and Stars."
