Diner Reviews
  • "Took my Mom & Dad to The Pit to celebrate Mommy's birthday. I'm biased but my Mommy is the best soul food cook around & she, well we all were extremely impressed by the food atmosphere & service. My husband & I were frequent visitors to The Pit but stopped going so often after Ed Mitchell left based on some not so good visits. I am now pleased to say that The Pit has gotten its "MoJo" back & we will definitely be back soon."

  • "I live out of town, but every time I come to Raleigh, I head to The Pit. This time, though, was disappointing. The food was spectacular, but the service was lacking. Our waitress was rude - on the verge of arrogant, and the four of us ordered four different drinks. She came back-- on a Saturday night, mind you, and said that they did not have the liquor to make three of us drinks. They ran out of liquor??? really? Poor planning if you ask me. "

  • "I've yet to be disappointed in any of their food. In fact for Eastern Carolina barbecue is my favorite in town! When northern friends come to visit this is the spot on most often take them, along with the Farmers Market restaurant, and they never cease to be impressed. Ifyou have a family member that dislikes noise this just might not be the best place to because it's a very vibrant dining scene."

  • "My family lives in NY and always wants to get Barbecue when they come to Raleigh. This was the first spot I took them and they always want to come back when they are in town. This is all fine and great, except that I'm vegan! The addition of the Barbecue tofu was really awesome. I had heard that it was on the menu (probably almost a year ago?), but just haven't been back to try it. Well it was delicious and of course the rest of the family enjoyed their meals as well. "

  • "We take our out-of-town relatives to The Pit to show them authentic North Carolina BBQ, but it is pricey. It is always busy; we love the valet parking, but the sticker shock always gets us afterwards. I recommend it as a place to see, but I can't afford to go often."

  • "The food was fantastic. We made reservations and were so glad to not have to wait at all. The service was a bit slow. Took a long time to get our drinks, same for getting our food. And same for getting drink refills. But the waitstaff was very friendly. I would def go again, but hopefully the service would be a bit quicker. "

  • "I have heard good things about the Pit but until I ate there I did not know. They had the best Ribs I have had in my life. They were amazing, quick and everyone was very friendly and helpful. Get a reservation if you go because it was filling up quick and I was there at 11:30 on a saturday morning. "

  • "I have eaten there several times of the past few years and quality of the food has really dropped. I used to recommend it but no more."

  • "I enjoyed bringing my family from NY to a real BBQ restaurant. It was a great experience and the wait staff was exceptionally welcoming. I suggest the BBQ fries as an appetizer!! Yummm!!"

  • "As a foodie I love to try different avenues of great food. I first saw this restaurant view on Bobby Flays "Throwdown". Mr. Ed Mitchell crushes Bobby Flay in this competition of BBQ ribs! I'm from the south, so this was a no brainer to travel to Raleigh, NC to try some great classic dishes just like what I was raised up on. I had the baby back ribs, collard greens, red beans and rice, Mac n cheese, and for dessert the banana pudding! Everything was on point just like my grandmother cooking! In closing I definitely recommend "The Pit" to all who enjoys great southern cooking!"

  • "The food was delicious as always, but unlike other places with great food the portions are big and the prices are low. Should've taken home leftovers, but figured why wait."

  • "I really enjoyed my dinner at the Pit. The Mac and cheese tasted just like mine. Don't find that to often. The fried chicken was moist and crispy and well seasoned. Ribs were tender and just the right amount of sauce . Great overall meal . Visiting from New York stopped in after seeing a man versus food.I definitely want to go back again"

  • "Wonderful service and terrific food, as usual. It is a crowded and noisy place to dine, with families with young children mixed in with younger folks and couples on a date. Noticed the sanitation rating was a 90 though and wonder what's up with that."

  • "I made reservations for a table of 4 at 8pm. I could see that there were plenty of open tables, but they said that the computer system was down so they were a little behind, so I accepted my pager and stood waiting with the other people in my party. 30 minutes later, we were the last ones to be seated, and even then only afterm I went up to ask why we weren't already seated when there were so many open tables. After that, service was extremely slow, especially since they pride themselves on "team service". We were a table of 4 surrounded by 4 or 5 tables of 6+, and it was clear that we did not have any sort of priority. We didn't leave the restaurant until almost 10pm. Food was great, service is usually much better."

  • "We went on Thursday night. Busy as usual. We were a table of 5 with reservations; still had 15+ min wait. Our server was visibly overwhelmed with his group tables. He forgot drinks and refills throughout the night, spilled things, put in wrong orders, blamed the chef when food came out wrong, removed them after 5 minutes of them sitting with us (probability of him re-serving them to correct table seemed high, not good if so since one of the plates had already been touched), so had half the table eating and half waiting for correct food, gave us incorrect bill (contained incorrect orders...that's how we found out it was not chef's fault). He apologized at the end of our meal for the 'wait'...nothing else. Food was great as usual though. "

  • "Brought out of town family here for some authentic BBQ and it did not disappoint. We had two youngsters with us(6 and 2) and it worked out fine. They were pretty busy, but our OpenTable reservation helped us get seated as soon as we got to the hostess stand. I love the BBQ, but forced myself to get the Fried Chicken and was very glad I did. Our server even brought out a sample of Eastern BBQ for my Mom and Sister to try after they were scared by the concept of "vinegar based sauce". Yankees..."

  • "I have eaten at The Pit many times since I move to Raleigh. They have the best BBQ that I have had here. I have tried a few places, but I continue to go back for the great food and polite, responsive service. The brisket is great!"

  • "A tasty treat with extremely large portions. The pumpkin corn bread for a starter was delicious, but it was not needed. They also served a basket full of biscuits and yummy hush puppies while wating on dinner. The briskit meatloaf was delicious, but I did not partticulary care for the mac and cheese (which is one of my favorites most anywhere!). My daughter had the half rack of baby back ribs; also delicious and meaty. My husband had the turkey, and it was good too! Overall, we left there stuffed with really great food. Wish we could have taken the leftovers, but we were staying at a nearby hotel with no means to chill or reheat."

  • "Had lunch with a co-worker and we both got the pulled pork. I got my favorite sides of macaroni and cheese and collard greens with all hushpuppies instead of 50/50 hush puppies and biscuits. I worked it off with a couple hours of yard work when I got home that evening. Well worth it!"

  • "We are not from the area, so we make it a point to visit The Pit when we visit Raleigh. It has been great every time we visited. Great chopped barbeque, ribs, pumpkin cornbread and biscuits. Our only disappointment has been that we don't have room for dessert. The portions are huge! Can't wait for our next trip to Raleigh."

  • "We had a reservation for 5, the round tables with booths are great. With 5 we decided on the family style - unbelievable the amount of food, excellent staff, very attentive, and a great time had by all. Will definitely be back....:) Make your reservations, as the lines go out the door..."

  • "I enjoyed the food although I've had better barbecue in the area. The bacon bruschetta was excellent. Ribs needed more time, not quite as flavorful or soft as I like. Chopped barbecue was pretty good, a little on the spicy side. The place was packed on a Sunday night (8 p.m.) with a disturbingly high noise level. Service was friendly and competent although the kitchen seemed to be struggling to keep up."

  • "First, they say they only serve Eastern NC-style BBQ but have fried chicken, BBQ turkey and Brisket. What's up with that??? Took out of town visitors to The Pit because it had such a good reputation for NC BBQ. The food was good but not great considering the reputation and the chef. The brisket which was fork tender but sauce was tasteless. Another in our party had the fried chicken which was so dark we thought it burned. Service was provided by a continuous round of people so we never really knew who was taking care/watching out for us. Prices were high for the same things you get at any BBQ place. I think the Pit is over-priced and only fair. I've had better NC BBQ at cheaper "joints"."

  • "I had been to this restaurant in November and raved about it to everyone until our visit this last Friday night. The service was horrible, the food was disappointing, which I didn't believe could be possible after our first visit. We drove down from Philadelphia for a soccer tournament and this was our first stop in North Carolina. Maybe we expected too much this time but it took forever to get our food and when it came it looked like we got someone's leftovers. Wings were burnt, fires were crumbs and the chicken was dry and looked like it had been sitting somewhere for hours."

  • "Seated in accord with reservations. Waiter was very knowledgable and helpful. Service was timely given the crowd on Friday night. Food was incredibly tender; sauce was so-so. Greens were good and fried okra was good. Thanks. Looking forward to a return visit, but question the suitability for a rehearsal dinner. Thanks."

  • "After reading several reviews about The Pit I made reservation. The location is in downtown Raleigh, an area of several restaurants and pubs in old warehouses. There is lots of on street parking in the area. I had high hopes and was not disappointed. They have a large and interesting menu and the entrees looked so good . I started with the Pumpkin cornbread( very good and different in a good way) I choose the chopped pork which was excellent Eastern NC Barbecue. Good tender meat and smoke taste; no need to add any sauce. Service was very good, the servers work in teams which provide great service without being in your face.Tip is to make reservations as they get very busy and enjoy."

  • "This was our second visit to The Pit. This is not your typical BBQ joint. The food is wonderful, the service is very good. We had a few drinks from the bar, they were excellent. We live about three hours from the Raleigh area, both of our trips were made due to Dr. appt. in the area. I have another Dr. appt. in six weeks, see ya at The Pit!"
