Diner Reviews
  • "I shared the App Sampler and the Big Boy Meat Combo. The chopped pork was outstanding.Apps were also outstanding-wasn't expecting such a gourmet taste.Onion rings were peppery and the best I've had.The wings were crisp, which I prefer. The bruschetta had goat cheese sprinkled on, another favorite of mine. The best were the BBQ soul rolls-like a spring roll with chopped pork in it.On the down side, excluding the chopped pork, the other meats were ho-hum.The chicken was very juicy, but too much sauce. The beef ribs were good (again too much sauce), pork ribs were dry. The brisket was VERY dry and wasn't masked with all the sauce. If you love lots of sauce, this may be for you.Service was awesome-even got apps for free for it being our 1st time."

  • "The restaurant was super busy when my friend and I arrived a few minutes early for our 8pm reservation on Saturday, July 5th, 2014. We were seated only about 5-10 minutes late but the weather was beautiful so we didn't mind waiting outside briefly. I appreciated that the menu noted Gluten-Free and Vegan options. Our waiter was very efficient but polite. Only once did I have to ask for more water. The complimentary valet parking topped off the vibrant atmosphere and elimated the frustration of finding a parking spot on a weekend evening dowtown. I'm looking forward to bringing my family when they're in town in August."

  • "We discovered THE PIT online and decided to give it a try. WOW... what a great find. Everything about it was fantastic. We will definitely go again until we try everything on the menu !!!"

  • "Good place for BBQ, esp the ribs. Skip the fried chicken as it's overcooked."

  • "I brought 2 Brazilian visitors, from the land of the steaks, so I was not sure how they'd react to the NC BBQ. But what the heck, life is about trying new things. We shared 3 main dishes and several typical NC sides (deep firied breaded okra, collards etc.). The main dishes came with the eastern NC and the western NC sauce. It was all scrumptious. I'll bring the family for a next special treat. Oh yes - the one Brazilian and I ate till all was gone. The other, not so much. Both know what NC BBQ is all about. :)"

  • "The food was OK but not up to the hype. It was somewhat hit or miss on what you ordered. Brisket and Mac N Cheese were great but son who is a rib enthusiast was not inpress with the flavor of them. Stew was more like soup and potatoes were bland. Atmosphere was very busy and loud and not handicap friendly. Staff was friendly and attentive which was great. Would go back for the brisket but that is about it."

  • "This was my first time being there, I had reserved a table online which I totally recommend. The restaurant is usually crowded. The offer valet parking and of course the food and drinks are great."

  • "The food was delicious, as usual, and we enjoyed the experience. We did, however, feel a bit rushed. We wanted to relax and enjoy our dinner a little more. Also, having three servers was a bit annoying/confusing."

  • "The BBQ is truly wonderful. Sides are always good and fresh. Service is outstanding. I think it is the best lunch deal in Raleigh. But please don't go because I don't want it so crowded that I cannot get in! :-)"

  • "The food was tasty but the temperature could have been warmer. The service was superb, including the free valet parking."

  • "First time over there. I loved the experience. The food was in such quantity that the appetizer itself had us almost half-filled or so. The food was well cooked and we had enough to take with us home. Keep up the good work."

  • "If you have out-of-towners - especially those from up North - this is a great introduction to North Carolina Barbecue! The waiter was very helpful explaining all of the different options and the portions are generous!"

  • "Abit disappointed with the chopped and pulled pork. Was expecting fresh, hot off the butt-when ordered inside/outside typical of top NC BBQ joints, but our serving obviously been sitting on steam table for some time, as it had picked up the pallid, grey look and stale taste. Maybe asking too much for a fancy/more upscale establishment, as opposed to the best "shacks". Fried chicken was hot, fresh, well crusted and juicy however. A good sign of a true top BBQ joint though is that they just stick to the BBQ."

  • "Overall the food was really good. We started with the Fried Pimento Cheese, which was outstanding! I had the chopped pork BBQ and brisket, which were both really good. The mac n cheese was tasty and the cole slaw was just ok, I didn't eat much of it because it was my least favorite. We got the banana pudding and it was good, but not as good as we were hoping for a BBQ place."

  • "We always take our out-of-town guests to The Pit so that they can enjoy the region's best bbq. This time we had guests and we were celebrating a friend's birthday. Our waiter juggled all 8 of our orders perfectly, and even surprised one of our friends with a sample of one of the dishes. One of our guests ordered ribs and spent the rest of the night in awe at how amazing they were and that they just fell off the bone. Fantastic service and dinner. Only downside is that it is always difficult to have a conversation. There is poor soundproofing/noise control. The food is worth shouting though. (We recently ate at the Durham location, which was very disappointing. It was nice to be back in Raleigh where each dish is perfect.)"

  • "Loved The Pit the first time for lunch a month ago but last Wednesday night, the chicken was so greasy. We were so surprised! The crowd was very large and may have caused problems in the kitchen. The rest of the food was just ok.We may go back but not take important business guests as we did last Wednesday."

  • "We always stop here as we pass Asheville, NC on Rt 40. Very friendly, really good BBQ with a variety of sauces. Even though the ownership went to U of Alabama, we still stop there. That's how good it is..."

  • "Best Eastern NC BBQ in the Triangle. Sides and breads are great as well, very good beer selection. Reservation almost always needed!"

  • "The menu wasn't long - but it didn't need to be. Plenty of delicious slow-cooked meat options. The beef brisket and the pork BBQ were the best tasting. (Ribs were dry, chicken was ordinary.) The side dish options were fantastic- especially the fried okra. Perfectly hot and crunchy."

  • "Was on the road with my son visiting colleges. Decided we wanted something other than fast food and found this gem on your web site. Booked the reservation on my phone and thank goodness we did. When we arrived the line was out the door. When we finally got to the reception desk the group in front of us were told an 1 and 1/2 hour wait. We went to the desk told them we had a reservation and our name and were seated right away. Thanks. Good food, good service, good night!"

  • "Service is usually very good. This time not so much. Food took quite awhile and there were times we seemed to be forgotten about. Meatloaf was Ok, but not out of the park as compared to other items on the menus. Deviled eggs were bland, not in keeping with the quality of other appetizers."

  • "The staff was very professional and personable. Anyone of them was ready to answer any questions you had and help in any way. The food was very good. My party of 3 each had something different and from the hush puppies and biscuit to the entrée everyone liked all the food delivered. I would highly recommend this establishment to anyone who loves BBQ. I had a beef brisket that was superb. The meat was so tender that it fell apart when the fork touched it. I swear it was like the food itself was making easier to be eaten. If you are in Raleigh, NC for more than a couple of hours this is the place to go eat at least once while you are there. I would recommend getting a reservation before hand or you may have to wait a bit to be seated."

  • "Make a reservation! Walk-in wait time on Friday night...1.5 hrs. We had as appetizers the Pumpkin Cornbread(GREAT!) and the Fried Pimento Cheese (not bad). I had the Chopped BBQ plate with mac and cheese and coleslaw. I thought the BBQ was a little mushy. Adding the vinegar-based sauce made it better. My friend had the BBQ chicken which was better than my entree. Overall we had a good dining experience. Tip #1: if you have to wait, the buzzer can reach you from Crank Arm! Tip #2: Order the off-menu Moonshine Mojito muddled w/Basil cocktail! You won't be disappointed! I'm from Greenville, NC and we know pig! The BBQ was average at best. Great service though!"

  • "I am from upstate New York and make it a point to go to the Pit when I come to the Raleigh Durham area. The barbecue is excellent and the selection is very good. Our waiter was not the most attentive this time and the place can be very noisy. So if you are looking for a nice quiet place for dinner this isn't the place for you. But if you are looking for some excellent southern barbecue then this is the place to come."

  • "We were disappointed with the baby back ribs and the fried chicken. They were too dry. The brisket was very good. We did not see a wine on the wine list we wanted so did not order any. Need summer white wine selections. Beer options were good. Everything in the bread basket was dry as well. Barbeque sauce was too sweet, light on spice. The cucumber and tomato side dish was too sweet. Could not taste any vinegar flavor at all. The appetizer sample platter was good."

  • "Once again The Pit did not dissapoint me and my hubby. The Ribs are fall off the bone and the Hand Cut Fries are perfect. Hubby says meatloaf was better seasoned for his Father's Day experience and he was disspointed about the Fresh Green Beans are not apart of the everyday menu. Overall we left satisfied and full."

  • "This was our first visit to the popular Pit restaurant. The unfortunate part was the pulled pork wasn't ready for our early Sunday lunch. I suppose you can't rush those things. We all ended up getting the Carolina combo which included fried chicken and chopped BBQ. The fried chicken was excellent! The chicken breast was tender and juicy. My family enjoyed to chopped BBQ. The sides we had were delicious. The banana pudding was a prize find! When we arrived at 11:15 we were one of the first guest. Our food arrived within minutes of ordering. When we left the surprisingly large restaurant was full and they were on a wait. You should make a reservation if you want to eat at The Pit."

  • "Our experience was a disappointment . We were a party of 7. We were seated at a table facing a window where the sun streaming in was so disruptive that several of our party could not even read the menus. Noone came by to see if we wanted to change our table (there were other large ones empty nearby). Drink and appetizer orders were taken and delivered promptly. After that servers were hard to come by. We finally ordered our meals. Six of the seven were delivered at the same time. We had to flag down 2 people in order to get the 7th meal delivered which was well after most were finished. Food portions were small for the high price. Only redeeming feature - what little food you got was tasty."

  • "I am never disappointed at The Pit BBQ, have been going to this restaurant since moving to Raleigh, seven years ago. When family or friends visit, The Pit is the first place they want to go. The food is consistenly good. My favorite is the ribs, and favorite side is creamed corn, although the battered onion rings we ordered last week were disapointing (too, too much batter).Desserts are good also, if you have any room left in your tummy, you won't be sorry. Staff is always friendly and helpful. I have learned to always make a reservation, especially on the weekend. This place is hopping, every day of the week!"

  • "This was our first time, and the food was really good. It was a lot of food, so bring your appetite. The service was attentive, and timely, but not overbearing. The group I was a part of, all had different dishes, and everyone loved everything the had. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the dishes."
