I visit the Pit often. I had a family member come from out of town and she wanted to try the Pit. Her food was good but the sweet potato fries she ordered were a little hard. She didn't complain, just mentioned it at the end of the meal.

I will not go back to that place again nor would I recommend it to anyone. Horrible hostess, manager and servers. Food was salty and greasy. I made a reservation for 12 people way ahead of time and confirmed on the phone same day. On arrival, we were told we will not be shown to our table until everyone arrives. After complaining to the manager we were told they will give us a table since we were not informed of their policy. Even after that we we had to wait for 30 minute to sit. When our for arrived, it was left at the end of the table and we had to figure out who ordered what. Our plates were removed without being asked if we are done. Despite all that we had an amazing time and ended up going to Buku for Deseret

I have been there twice. The first was not a horrible experience. Just extremely crowded (Sunday midday) and a long wait. The food was just ok the first time (big boy meat combo and fried green tomatoes) but the plate was piled with meat. The second time was a Saturday with reservations for 4:45. Place was empty but was packed by 5:30 when we left. Big boy meat combo again but not as good and not nearly as much food. Gnats flying around everywhere at our booth by the kitchen. Bacon bruschetta barely had any bacon and sauce was horrible and cold. Wait staff was extremely nice though.

We knew that from before when we dined we needed reservations, so we made them for a Saturday mid afternoon. The Pit was busy. We waited quite a while for a waiter and then our order was taken. Food came out hot and great, until dessert. We ordered the banana pudding, not great. The bananas were rubbery and nasty, just plain yuck. Everything else was great.

The food was great as always. We had a party of 6, and they sat us in the back, in a room with two other larger tables, and we could not hear each other talk, and almost had to scream at each other. Other than a bad table, everything else was good. The server was great.

I'm a BBQ loving fiend. I have had Texas, and Kansas City and St. Louis while visiting all of those cities and love them all. I have never had NC BBQ in NC until last week. Add another version of Q to my list of favorites. And The Pit does it great. Even though I knew I would never finish the 3 meat combo, I had to get it to sample their offerings. Tender succulent ribs, chopped pork with just the right amount of vinegar (what sets NC BBQ apart from the others) and melt in your mouth smoky brisket. Awesome. Beer offerings to wash it all down are very thoughtfully selected. We sat at the bar and watched TNF on the TV's and our bartender was a great guide to all The Pit has to offer. If you're in Raleigh, you gotta go.

After having lived in Greenville, NC and being spoiled with the likes of B's BBQ, and the Skylight (in Ayden), I was anxious to give the Pit a try. I had seen a report covering The Pit on Carolina Weekend on PBS, and from the looks of the food in that report, I was really excited to give it a try. The service, food and atmosphere were all excellent. I ordered the chopped plate with macaroni and cheese, and onion rings. My boyfriend also had the chopped plate, and had mashed potatoes with gravy, and pinto beans as his side. He also started with a cup of Brunswick Stew as an appetizer. All I can say is "WOW!!" The BBQ was some of the best I've had since moving west of I-95. The sides were just as good! We'll definitely be back!

On September 10, 2014 we visited The Pit for lunch. I always enjoy the food and atmosphere, so this is not a reflection entirely on The Pit's quality and service. However, the waitress we had on this particular day delivered extremely poor service. Right in the middle of one of our party guests deciding on what to order, the waitress rudely stated that she needed to go to another table and take their order until we decided what to order. There were 3 of us in our party, and the waitress could have easily moved to another person in our party to take an order. Instead, she walked away from our table to go to another table to take their order. This was the most horrific service I've received from a waitress.

Recently moved to Raleigh and kept hearing great things about The Pit. Honestly, the service was phenomenal and we enjoyed the atmosphere. Our food came out very quickly, but definitely wasn't the best NC BBQ I've had. It was okay. Not good, not bad, and not worth the price tag. Overall average experience that unfortunately didn't live up to its reputation.

The service was wonderful. With reservations you feel like VIP walking in and going straight to your table passing the long line of folks that are waiting to get a table. The menu options were amazing and I wanted to try 1 of every appetizer. The food was just ok after hearing all the hype of how great it was my expectations were very high. By no means was it bad food and it did have good flavors and good portion sizes. I plan to go back to try many more menu items in the future.

We have been to The Pit several times. It is a great place for ribs. Normally, I would rate the food "very good"; but my catfish sandwich was pitiful this visit. Usually, it is a huge piece of fish hanging off the bun; but this trip it was three very tiny pieces on the bun. It was not good. However, the ribs were excellent as always. I like my fried okra a bit crispier; but it had a good taste. Family and group friendly; casual fun place for lunch. We will go again. Recommend reservations for weekend lunches; especially if there is an event downtown/school ceremonies, etc.

We enjoyed the choice of different kinds of meats and marinade. The biscuits and hush puppies at the start were also yummy. There were seven of us and were put on a large round table, which was nice except the loud ambient noise made it hard to hear one another speak. Most of our party found it difficult to finish their plates.

We brought some relatives that came from out of the country, had never been to NC & we wanted them to experience southern barbeque. We (7) were crammed into a table at the very far end of the restaurant in what looked like a back room with minimal decor. The restaurant was practically empty and even when we left there were plenty of places we could have been seated that were still empty. Our waiter although nice would disappear for long periods of time. We would have stayed longer, had dessert and more drinks if we had been better accommodated and had better service. Instead we went to another restaurant to enjoy dessert and drinks. On a positive note the food was good, the barbeque was a hit and the white peach sangria was a delight.

My parents visited and wanted to try out the Pit since we talked about it so much. The food was great and the servers too great care of us. But my father commented on his trip to the bathrooms - no soap, dirty floors, trash overflowing. So I had to check it out for myself. Sure enough he was right. Food and service can be great but toss in a dirty restroom and it leaves a bad vibe for the whole night.

For a number of reasons, I won't be going back to this restaurant. The bbq was by far the worst I've had in the area- the seasoning on the meat and the sauces were subpar. The wait staff was horrid. 3 waiters were supposed to be attending to our table (a table of only 3 people mind you, NOT a giant party), yet two of us sat there for over 5 minutes on two separate occasions with empty glasses. And even then, it was because we waived down the waiters. The bread came out well after our appetizer (not a huge problem, but just shows how inattentive waiters were to not realize that 20 minutes after being seated we still didn't have the bread that I was waiting on). The prices were way too high for the quality of food and service.
