  • "I have eaten at The Pit many times since I move to Raleigh. They have the best BBQ that I have had here. I have tried a few places, but I continue to go back for the great food and polite, responsive service. The brisket is great!"

  • "A tasty treat with extremely large portions. The pumpkin corn bread for a starter was delicious, but it was not needed. They also served a basket full of biscuits and yummy hush puppies while wating on dinner. The briskit meatloaf was delicious, but I did not partticulary care for the mac and cheese (which is one of my favorites most anywhere!). My daughter had the half rack of baby back ribs; also delicious and meaty. My husband had the turkey, and it was good too! Overall, we left there stuffed with really great food. Wish we could have taken the leftovers, but we were staying at a nearby hotel with no means to chill or reheat."

  • "Had lunch with a co-worker and we both got the pulled pork. I got my favorite sides of macaroni and cheese and collard greens with all hushpuppies instead of 50/50 hush puppies and biscuits. I worked it off with a couple hours of yard work when I got home that evening. Well worth it!"

  • "Not too loud, easily accommodated our party of 7. Ample choices on the menu, while staying within the expected pit genre. We'll go back."

  • "We are not from the area, so we make it a point to visit The Pit when we visit Raleigh. It has been great every time we visited. Great chopped barbeque, ribs, pumpkin cornbread and biscuits. Our only disappointment has been that we don't have room for dessert. The portions are huge! Can't wait for our next trip to Raleigh."

  • "We had a reservation for 5, the round tables with booths are great. With 5 we decided on the family style - unbelievable the amount of food, excellent staff, very attentive, and a great time had by all. Will definitely be back....:) Make your reservations, as the lines go out the door..."

  • "I enjoyed the food although I've had better barbecue in the area. The bacon bruschetta was excellent. Ribs needed more time, not quite as flavorful or soft as I like. Chopped barbecue was pretty good, a little on the spicy side. The place was packed on a Sunday night (8 p.m.) with a disturbingly high noise level. Service was friendly and competent although the kitchen seemed to be struggling to keep up."

  • "We were visiting Raleigh from Chicago. The staff at our hotel recommended The Pit. We immediately made a reservation and were not disappointed. The food was delicious. The service was excellent and our food came out quickly."

  • "Superb barbecue with attentive service and pleasant surroundings. Can't beat it for southern cooking..."

  • "This is our go to place for out of town company. Whenever we have company, our first stop is an intro to NC BBQ at The Pit. Never let's us down."
    Dined on 4/10/2014
  • "Awesome barbeque place! Ribs literally FALL OFF the bone."
    Dined on 4/9/2014
  • "First, they say they only serve Eastern NC-style BBQ but have fried chicken, BBQ turkey and Brisket. What's up with that??? Took out of town visitors to The Pit because it had such a good reputation for NC BBQ. The food was good but not great considering the reputation and the chef. The brisket which was fork tender but sauce was tasteless. Another in our party had the fried chicken which was so dark we thought it burned. Service was provided by a continuous round of people so we never really knew who was taking care/watching out for us. Prices were high for the same things you get at any BBQ place. I think the Pit is over-priced and only fair. I've had better NC BBQ at cheaper "joints"."

  • "We brought friends from NYC and they loved the food! We always have a great experience here. It is our place to bring out of town guests!"

  • "This is our special occasions place! We love the rich flavorful food. One of few places that has turkey bbq. Everything is so fresh! Homemade rolls, hush puppies, and bbq sauce. This is one of the best in Raleigh!"

  • "I had been to this restaurant in November and raved about it to everyone until our visit this last Friday night. The service was horrible, the food was disappointing, which I didn't believe could be possible after our first visit. We drove down from Philadelphia for a soccer tournament and this was our first stop in North Carolina. Maybe we expected too much this time but it took forever to get our food and when it came it looked like we got someone's leftovers. Wings were burnt, fires were crumbs and the chicken was dry and looked like it had been sitting somewhere for hours."

  • "We stopped by on our way through town. The Pit was outstanding. We got a table right away, service was on point and the food was out of this world."

  • "The Pit is the best place for North Carolina barbecue in Raleigh. It's great for meeting up with friends or dining with the family. The food is delicious and authentic. I definitely recommend!"

  • "We tried the ribs and barbecue and it was really good !!! My 5yr old twins enjoyed everything as well"

  • "Seated in accord with reservations. Waiter was very knowledgable and helpful. Service was timely given the crowd on Friday night. Food was incredibly tender; sauce was so-so. Greens were good and fried okra was good. Thanks. Looking forward to a return visit, but question the suitability for a rehearsal dinner. Thanks."

  • "After reading several reviews about The Pit I made reservation. The location is in downtown Raleigh, an area of several restaurants and pubs in old warehouses. There is lots of on street parking in the area. I had high hopes and was not disappointed. They have a large and interesting menu and the entrees looked so good . I started with the Pumpkin cornbread( very good and different in a good way) I choose the chopped pork which was excellent Eastern NC Barbecue. Good tender meat and smoke taste; no need to add any sauce. Service was very good, the servers work in teams which provide great service without being in your face.Tip is to make reservations as they get very busy and enjoy."

  • "This was our second visit to The Pit. This is not your typical BBQ joint. The food is wonderful, the service is very good. We had a few drinks from the bar, they were excellent. We live about three hours from the Raleigh area, both of our trips were made due to Dr. appt. in the area. I have another Dr. appt. in six weeks, see ya at The Pit!"

  • "I used to LOVE The Pit. This time, I went before going to a show at PNC. I was disappointed in the food and service. We were a group of four, our water glasses were never refilled. I ordered catfish. When I received my plate I got 4 little catfish nuggets, not a real piece of fish. The mac and cheese was cold and fairly flavorless. Overall, The Pit wasn't terrible, but I won't be back. There are too many other places in town that serve good barbecue and Southern food for The Pit to screw it up."

  • "Love the Pit! Go there every couple weeks! My friend was visiting from out of town and wanted to take her to get great NC BBQ! The ribs were moist, fall off the bone delicious! We also got fried chicken that was unbelievably dry. After telling the waiter he brought us out more chicken which was actually drier than the first! I will never get fried chicken there again. Very disappointing! Everything else was great!"

  • "I had 3 friends visiting from out of town and took them to The Pit for dinner. The multi-server service was great, the menu was extensive, and the food was outstanding. A great time was had by all. If you like bbq and southern cooking, give it a try."

  • "Dined at The Pit with others who had never been before and they were amazed. The selection and quality of the food is top-notch. There are other options on the menu but one must have anything that is BBQ. Love the skillet cornbread as a starter. The pulled pork is amazing and the ribs beyond adequate words. All the sides are southern and classic. Veggie of the day was sautéed brussel sprouts with caramelized onions and a hint of sweetness...just divine. The Pit seats a large amount of people, is very popular and I recommend reservations to avoid a wait. The service was outstanding and the décor is BBQ with an upscale contemporary touch; it is not the typical BBQ joint look. Highly recommend The Pit."

  • "The food was great as usual and the service was perfect."

  • "This is the first place we take all out of town guests and have never been disappointed in the food or the service. The brisket is wonderful, as is the pulled pork. Friends Saturday night tried the meat loaf and said it was amazing - made with brisket. Even the catfish is memorable. You MUST save room for the bourbon ice cream. It is heaven in a cup, and the molasses cookie served with it isn't bad either!"

  • "Other than the a noise from all of the people waiting for a table (because the place is always crowded) there is nothing that should change. If you expanded somehow to alleviate the crowds it may make things a bit better. Also, may help the newbies that did not know to reserve a table in advance."

  • "My daughter and son-in-law just came back from Okinawa after 18 months of duty and stayed wth us for 2 weeks. They were leaving the following day to move to Annapolis, MD. My wfe had suggested we take them out for dinner at at a nearby Italian restaurant. I thought, "Lets give them a choice! Why don't we add "The Pit" in there. Steve loves barbecue". The overwhelming count was for bbq. We were not dissappointed. The food and service was excellent. The atmosphere was lively. We had my 7 month old grandchild with us. He loved looking around the room and smiling at different people. The staff would come over and play with him. It was a delightful event for all of us. It was GREAT and I highly recommend it!"

  • "I was at The Pit with my boss and another department manager. Overall the experience was good. We have very quick service and the restaurant was clean. The food was okay. I had the b-que chicken which was okay, the other manager had the pulled pork sandwhich which was okay, and my boss had the ribs which he really liked. The potato salad and french fries were okay. If your there as a visitor it is a nice place to stop and grab a bit, but I have had better elsewhere."

  • "I love this place. The chicken, BBQ and Mac & cheese are all I ever get because they are so good! Cook just the way I like it. The only problem we ever have when eating here is usually the unpleasant hostess. I would not recommend a group coming UNLESS they have a reservation.... You probably should book at least a week in advance."

  • "This was my very first visit to The Pit - and I was not disappointed! First, I was very pleased to be able to make my reservation through OpenTable. Complimentary valet service was a plus as well. We were greeted and advised there would be 3 servers assisting for our meal (only 3 in our party) and we were a bit skeptical - but it was very smooth transition from one server to the next. Now for the food - great Southern comfort food!!!! The brisket very tender, the pulled pork perfect - and if you are a Mac & Cheese lover - its a must!!!"

  • "The food - great. Probably THE best fried chicken I've ever had! The service - super. Our servers (they use a team concept) we're just smart a** enough to be enjoyable without going overboard. The atmosphere - I think it's a converted factory, so there isn't much atmo, but it isn't Joe's Crab Shack noisy. Parking is a joke. Use free valet if you get there after 5, otherwise you'll drive a few laps before you find a spot."

  • "I have been many times to the Pit....and haling from Eastern North Carolina, never had the "Eastern NC Pork".....this time my crowd was getting ribs and beef briskit.....I stepped out and I must say it was HEAVEN and I will ALWAYS get this " Eastern NC BBQ" this is authentic but just different........oh yeah the mixed drinks are worth every cent....yummy and different as well My standard order from this point forward..... Pimento Cheese Balls, Eastern NC BBQ and hot banana pudding!!!!! You WIll NOT BE DISAPPOINTED......reservation was the trick ....otherwise wait was over an hour.....we did valet parking too!!! Large Business events happen there alot too....so do the reservation!!!"
