  • "Made a reservation on line which was great. We were put in the rear of the restaurant which wasn't bad but we didn't get to really enjoy the atmosphere as much as we could have. Server was very good and his knowledge of the menu both food and drinks was very helpful. Ribs were wonderful, chicken also, brisket was not up to either. Sampler appetizer was very good, large too. The bruschetta was very, very good. Local Beer was nice and my wife enjoyed her peace sangria as well. Did not leave hungry that's for sure. Cost was reasonable. All in all worth the trip of about 50 miles. Will certainly go again."

  • "we took some friends to The Pit this past weekend from Tennessee and they loved it! I am not a fan of Eastern NC bbq (grew up eating Lexington bbq) but I love the the turkey bbq at The Pit. our friends from TN of course were very sure of themselves that nothing would beat what they have, but they loved it!!! They were so impressed and we were happy we introduced them to eastern NC bbq. Service wasn't the best, but the food, as usual, was delish!"

  • "My first visit to The Pit was outstanding. I went with friends and we enjoyed the food, atmosphere and service so much that I chose it for the next date night with my wife. Date night did not go so well, and it was not my date. Our table was next to the wine "cellar" so servers were constantly going by our table. We were also near the check-in desk so it was exceptionally loud as well. We couldn't change chairs because of the wine cellar door so we just shouted to each other across the table. We had "tag team" service all night, and while everything was taken care of, we didn't feel cared for. As to the food, I had raved about the pumpkin cornbread, but this time the flavors weren't there. The same with dinner. Everything seemed off."

  • "My girlfriend and I ate at The Pit last Friday and it was a great meal. We got the family style meal: 2 appetizers, 2 meats, 2 sides, and a dessert. In addition to great food, The Pit also has a good selection of bourbon and a pretty good beer list. Service was good too. The staff works in teams so there is always coverage."

  • "I had been to The Pit several years ago. I was looking for a restaurant within walking distance of the Red Hat Amphitheater and remembered The Pit. We made a reservation for dinner before our concert and were very satisfied. Our waiter Keith was very helpful with our selections. The drinks were good and the food was hot, fresh and plentiful. A talked about my meal so much that I stopped back by for lunch two days later and had lunch with my boyfriend. I will definitely be back when I'm in the area again."

  • "Waited too long for the Quality that we received. Pulled pork was dry, fried chicken was ok,not the best we ever had. Very loud atmosphere. It is not the Homeplace in Virginia. I don't care to go back."

  • "On arrival with our OpenTable reservation, we had to wait 20 minutes to be seated. A total of 30 minutes if you count the fact we arrived 10 minutes early. We have been here before and the food was good. This time I ordered the baby back ribs. They were very tough. My fiance ordered to double combo to share with her cousin. The friend chicken she was given was a small wing and drumstick with a very modest scoop of bbq. We wanted to comment to the waiter, but could not get anyone's attention for about 15 minutes and hunger took over. It will be a while before we return."

  • "If a 'Barbecue Joint' could clean itself up and make nice, but still serve great barbecue, it would be The Pit. All of it, especially the sides, is so good that it's hard to decide what to choose from the menu. Everything we tasted was outstanding. Waitstaff knows their job and strikes the right balance."

  • "I have dined here on four occasions and have had a consistently great experience each time. The chopped BBQ is a must-have, and their Carolina rib meat drops right off the bone. The vinegar sauce and beer selection are fantastic, as well. The only thing that leaves a bit to be desired are their sides; I have yet to have any that are above average."

  • "I was extremely happy with the pulled pork! The plates were plentiful, the sides were delicious, and the biscuits and hush puppies were fantastic!The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. One of our waitresses did a fantastic job describing a wine we were not familiar with. My only regret is that we were too full to order dessert. I will be making sure that every time I'm in Raleigh, I will be stopping by the Pit!"

  • "We were so excited to eat at the Pit after hearing so many great reviews. We were disappointed in what we found. They were out of pulled pork and the food that was served was ok but certainly nothing to knock your socks off. All six of our plates were sent back with food on them and only one person wanted to have any boxed. The brisket was on the tough side. Our waitress started out ok but then seemed to just disappear. We ordered drinks. She said it would be a few minutes because the bar was busy. 25 minutes later, not even an update. The manager did comp the beer and wine but by the time it arrived, our meal was over. I doubt we will ever eat there again. I certainly did not find it lived up to even a 1/10 of its reputation."

  • "We were celebrating my husbands birthday and we had been to the Pit about 2 yrs ago and the experience was not good especially the food. So we took another dive in and we totally enjoyed the family syle dinner. It seemed almost like a party game that you eat until ypu are done with your selections and then you move on, but you can't go back and eat something from the last group, great concept. LOVED THE FOOD , SO DELISH.Sammy and his team was great.THANK YOU GUYS for making a revisit the best ever. We will be back and we also have other family planning on another celebration."

  • "My brother and nephew were visiting from NH and of course having BBQ was on their must-have list. I made a reservation - though they thought it was silly to think we needed it for 3:30 on a Saturday. Once we arrived at The Pit, they were glad we had them! We had the appetizer sampler, fried green tomatoes and fried pimento cheese - all were delicious. For entrees, we had the fried chicken, chopped and pulled pork and beef brisket. For dessert, it was banana pudding and pecan pie. Nothing disappointed, but the stars of the day were the brisket and pecan pie. My advice: make a reservation even if you don't think you'll need it and save room for pecan pie!"

  • "The collards were mushy and swimming in vinegar, I could find better fried ocra in the fozen section. The mac'n cheese was mediocre. The bar-b-que itself was really good, the ribs in particular. Fried green tomatoes were not bad. Overall, I was actually rather disappointed. I would get the bar-b-que again, but only if I could provide my own sides. All in all, I guess I would go back, as there are plenty of other menu items I have not tried."

  • " This was our first time visiting the Pit and we were extremely pleased. This was probably the best food and dining experience we have had in a long time. The Food was outstanding..had the babyback ribs, brisket, fried green tomatos, salad, creamed corn. The creamed corn was a little on the sweet side for our taste..but still good. And for desert...that AMAZING carrot cake! Maybe the best cake we have ever had. We were in Raleigh for a day trip and the Pit made it worthwhile! We will defininitely be visiting in the future! Thank you for Great Food and Great service!"

  • "Enjoyed a great lunch with out of town guests - tremendous service in an unhurried atmosphere - we had some time before heading out to the airport and the staff was very attentive throughout our stay - appreciated that the background noise level allowed for table conversation without having to raise our voices to be heard - entrees were super and enjoyed the wide selection of sides and apps. Valet parking is a great benefit since the downtown location has limited public parking - desserts were good but a pecan pie option in a bbq restaurant would be a nice option"

  • "I went with a group from work and we had a great experience. Being with a group allowed us to try just about everything and everything was quite delicious. The only hang-up we had was trying to make a reservation over the phone. However, I was easily able to make one on the way there on my phone, via open table, so it turned out perfect. I'd suggest making a reservation or the wait could be lengthy."

  • "I shared the App Sampler and the Big Boy Meat Combo.The chopped pork was outstanding.Apps were also outstanding-wasn't expecting such a gourmet taste.Onion rings were peppery and the best I've had.The wings were crisp,which I prefer.The bruschetta had goat cheese sprinkled on, another favorite of mine.The best were the BBQ soul rolls-like a spring roll with chopped pork in it.On the down side, excluding the chopped pork, the other meats were ho-hum.The chicken was very juicy, but too much sauce.The beef ribs were good (again too much sauce), pork ribs were dry. The brisket was VERY dry and wasn't masked with all the sauce. If you love lots of sauce, this may be for you.Service was awesome-even got apps for free for it being our 1st time."

  • "The restaurant was super busy when my friend and I arrived a few minutes early for our 8pm reservation on Saturday, July 5th, 2014. We were seated only about 5-10 minutes late but the weather was beautiful so we didn't mind waiting outside briefly. I appreciated that the menu noted Gluten-Free and Vegan options. Our waiter was very efficient but polite. Only once did I have to ask for more water. The complimentary valet parking topped off the vibrant atmosphere and elimated the frustration of finding a parking spot on a weekend evening dowtown. I'm looking forward to bringing my family when they're in town in August."

  • "The food was OK but not up to the hype. It was somewhat hit or miss on what you ordered. Brisket and Mac N Cheese were great but son who is a rib enthusiast was not inpress with the flavor of them. Stew was more like soup and potatoes were bland. Atmosphere was very busy and loud and not handicap friendly. Staff was friendly and attentive which was great. Would go back for the brisket but that is about it."
