  • "The squid char broiled in its own ink was amazing. A hand made pasta with wild fungi, spinach lemon was equally incredible. Some bites were very salty however so if your trying to watch your sodium intake I eould tell the staff in advance. The micro brewed beer selection is unparalleled. "

  • "They are certainly trying. I have no problem dropping some money for a good meal, but the dishes were just not worth it. They were confusing. There are too many components shoved into almost every dish. You could never get a full taste experience Lettuces and fish flakes: yuck, but maybe that's just me. The dressing was bland. Carrotts: Too much going on. Pickled apples= not good. Could never figure out what should go on my fork Oysters: Not bad. Bread: good. but feels cheap being charged $6 for bread. Wasn't THAT good. Squid: black ink sauce was AMAZING. rest of dish was eh. There were three pieces of squid. Steak: two pieces of unevenly cut meat. and gristly. Overall too expensive and not enough continuity."

You get an amuse bouche and a digestif, nice touches and the food is very interesting, but over priced for the out of the way location and folding chairs or bench seating."

  • "I love the food here - it is always surprising, ambitious, and imaginative. Not every dish hits the mark - but with a menu that changes every day and this level of ambition that is part of the adventure. And while the plates are small, they are reasonably priced. Unfortunately, The Pines is subject to the kind of ridiculous bar price inflation that has made drinking in New York so unpleasant. Just an example - I like a place that serves a modest sized martini, but with a $3 up charge on top of premium liquor prices, a small $15 martini feels more like I'm clubbing than eating at neighborhood place. The food draws me back but the wine and liquor tab make this more of a special occasion."
