Diner Reviews
  • "Very very tasty and delicious food and drinks. Also, very good service. It was the best dinner we had in Hawaii. The only negative, it is hard to find. It is part of the mall inside Macy's. We will definately go back!"

  • "We had lunch here. Both of us ordered the ahi sandwich which was very good."

  • "Service is outstanding. Lunch and dinner menus were great. Especially liked to salmon with orzo, and for lunch, the "bento" and the bruchetta. Love the bruchetta!"

  • "Exceptional service & outstanding food! I appreciated they didn't rush us, as some places do at lunch time. I had a business lunch, waiter gave excellent recommendations. The Wailua chocolate crunch dessert has been modified, who would have thought that could ever be improved!"

  • "Great food, great wine pairings, great chocolate desserts. Service is good, but was marred by one mistake during my last two visits (both were missed drinks). Highly recommended!"

  • "Great place to have lunch with 'da girls'. Even better in your birthday. They add a special personalize touch to the experience. Delicious food and service so pleasant."

  • "I love to go to the Pineapple Room for lunch. My go-to favorite is the antibiotic free New Zealand Salmon Ochazuke. The salmon is always perfect, crisp on the outside, moist and tender on the inside. Paired with creamy risotto, green tea and crunchy picked veggies, this dish is heaven!"

  • "Every time we go we see groups of local residents enjoying the restaurant, which speaks highly of the restaurant. The drinks are great, and lots of fun. The menu seems limited, and there are not many things that look appetizing to me, but the few things I have ordered are very good; not very innovative, but solid and reliable, and always enjoyable."

  • "We (2) had only an hour for lunch....we had excellent service & a GREAT waiter. Food was great & all the staff were very pleasant!! Mahalo!!"

  • "Took a group of clients for lunch. Ordered the special of the day "Corned Beef and cabbage" as it was St. Patricks Day. My food arrived last and the corned beef was tough and the cabbage was way under cooked. Didn't enjoy it and it was very disappointing. The dessert I ordered, bread pudding brulee` was fabulous. Our waiter/bus person Josh was great. He came by our table and filled our water glasses. Very professional."

  • "Been hearing about their breakfast and was finally able to try it. It met all of my expectations and some."

  • "If you need to take your guest from out of state to shopping at the Ala Moana Shopping Center then to lunch, Alan Wong's Pineapple Room is sure to please all palates from a burger to a Hawaii Regional cuisine dish. A very impressive wine menu and service from staff will make this experience memorable."

  • "Great for Saturday brunch. I had a good time with my friend."

  • "...for a restaurant in a department store. Its a little hard to reconcile the quality of the food with the casualness of the setting and the mall patrons. The prices limit the appeal. A comment in the OpenTable reservation about the birthday we were celebrating brought a thoughtful (and tasty) acknowledgment from the restaurant. Thankfully, it wasn't a staff sing-a-long. Appetizers and entrees were very good, desserts were a little over-sweet, drinks were a little too expensive. Service was pleasant, helpful, but a little thin for such a large space. Too expensive for a regular mall-day destination, but we would probably return for an occasion."

  • "Very small portions. Food quality very good. Pricey...$70/person with 1 drink...too much in my opinion"
    Dined on 3/6/2014
  • "I changed the reservation to party of 5 and the changes did not go through. I treated the ladies in my office to lunch for Girl's Day. Waited almost 30 mins to be seated cause they couldn't add one more chair to a table even though there were others with 5 to a table. They said it all depends if the waiter can handle the load... It was just one more person. So after the long wait we were seated at the counter and had so-so service. Not a good experience."

  • "The menus is wonderful and especially the fish. Their breadpuding is outstanding. Every time we are in Waikiki we go to tht Pineapple Room for lunch."

  • "I brought my friend visiting from WI for breakfast and she thoroughly enjoyed it."

  • "The Pineapple Room's menu has been diminished in options - it used to be a great place, but the food was not very good, the service was spotty at best, and the noise level made it quite difficult to hear the person who I was sitting next to - I didn't sit across the table because the noise level challenged the ability to hear my lunch companion. Overall, it was a disappointing experience."

  • "Our waiter was excellent, he gave us outstanding recommendations and cared about our dining experience, we will return often!"

  • "I appreciate this reliable gem on Macy's top floor. It is accessible, inviting and hospitable. I love Wong's food mastery and enjoyed his popular bento with butter fish, karate and chiraishi. It was a busy noon day crowd and the greeting desk seemed pressured and confused. We were shown to two different tables and the wait staff were slow and inattentive."
    Dined on 2/26/2014
  • "It wasn't bad considering it was the one in the Macy's. Still they tried and the service and staff were professional. A friend brought us here."
    Dined on 2/25/2014
  • "Exceptional quality, excellent service and nice atmosphere given the Macy's location. A good place for a business lunch with business lunch prices considering two people plus tip was over $50. My guest had the overpriced hamburger, but enjoyed it nonetheless."

  • "The Pineapple Room was enthusiastically recommended indirectly via someone who eats there frequently. We were expecting very good food and were not disappointed in that regard. The environment - right off (nearly in) a department store - caught us by surprise. The overall environment inside and nearby was more casual than we would have expected for the prices (as high as any relatively high end restaurant in the area), though the food quality itself (and the service) was up to the prices. If the restaurant could just isolate itself a bit more from the department store, and slightly notch up its physical environment to match its food and prices, ti would be a 4-star (at least) for certain. All said, we did enjoy the evening and may return."

  • "If Alan Wong's on King Street looks too fancy and too expensive, try the Alan Wong's at Ala Moana Macy's (2nd floor mauka side or if entering through the first floor, just off the women's department). Don't let "The Pineapple Room" name mislead you - this is Alan Wong quality and cooking at a MUCH MORE affordable price and a less MUCH LESS formal atmosphere. My husband actually prefers this Alan Wong's over the King Street one because of the more laid-back atmosphere and roomier table seatings and I'd have to agree. Just make sure to make reservations though because this secret gem is losing its secrecy status fast!"

  • "Expect good things with the Alan Wong name attached as far as the menu and wine list goes. Was a little disappointed with the ambience because it's located on the top floor of Macy's at the mall. They could've done a better job (in my opinion) of closing themselves off separately from the store."

  • "we ordered the bento lunch and was disappointed that first we were told that the miso butterfish was out and we could substitute salmon. Then the waitress came back to tell us the chirashi rice was out and we could substitute white rice or fried rice. I opted for the plain white rice which was also a disappointment from the anticipated chirashi. The meal did not seem as special as the original menu."

  • "The food has always been consistently great here! But the service left a bit to be desired. The wait staff brought the entree before the salad plates were removed. Twice, the bus boy removed my plate, while my fiancee was still eating. The check was delivered in front of me while my fiancee was still eating dessert. A few ofther errors as well...."

  • "The food was very good, but the price point for dinner is a little high for the shopping atmosphere of Macy's. We were seated and left without any service for longer than was appropriate, but the evening was saved by the executive chef noticing our lack of service and coming over himself to take our wine order and then bringing over an appetizer. What could have been a reason for not returning to the restaurant turned into a positive. Our dinner entrees were excellent and wines were reasonably priced."

  • "I wanted a romantic nice dinner for me and my husband and I made the reservations, hoping for a nice dinner. And the food was over priced for OK food, the best thing was the fish in the 5 course meal everything especially the ribs were not good they tasted like pot roast. And the dessert was 1 note and that was over powering chocolate. Also, I don't know if the slowness between meals was on purpose but it wasn't that busy and the turn around time was just sad. The noise was so loud it was very UNROMANTIC!!!"

  • "Pineapple Room has become my favorite restaurant in Hawaii. The food is outstanding, with some very unique dishes that you can find anywhere else (like the halo halo dessert). In addition, the service has improved tremendously over the past year. The servers are highly knowledgeable, helpful, and personable. The assistants are hard-working and attentive. I really love this place!"

  • "Made reservations on open table assuming it was going to be one of Honolulus got spots but was absolutely the oppiste it's located inside a Macy's which doesn't make it special at all and the food wasn't as amazing as expected from chef Alen Wong! He is supposedly an amazing chef but the pineapple room was second rate and nothing special I woulnt recomend it to any one that is going to Hawaii"

  • "I would rather pay a little bit more for consistent food and great service and Pineapple Room has both. I really appreciate that the staff are always nice, knowledgeable, consistent and take their job seriously. The only thing that I feel that could be improved on is the maintenance of the restaurant. The tops of the chair backs are sticky and black, the floors are scuffed, there's always thick dust on the lighting and light bulbs are constantly burned out. These details tell me a lot about the priorities of the owner/manager, and possibly even the kitchen. If these maintenance issues were taken care of on a regular basis, I would give this place 5 stars and wouldn't mind as much paying the high price on Da Poi Cup or Chazuke."
