A word from The Picnic House
Located at the crossroads of Portland"s Business and Art Districts, the Picnic House is a excellent place for a quick, great-tasting lunch before heading back to work as well as the perfect place for dinner and drinks before or after seeing a show at one of Portland's theaters. Built out of the lobby of the original 1920's Heathman Hotel, the Picnic House offers a great ambiance of 30-foot vaulted ceilings and fluted wood columns along with Steam Punk touches of a monocled bear in a bowler hat and walls covered in moss and mosaics of copper printing plates. Head chef Jessica Grimmer creates seasonal menus that are familiar and nostalgic yet different and daring enough to peak both your interest and your appetite.Continued

  • "Made a last-minute reservation for a large party for lunch and the staff have everything ready for us within minutes, and they were very accommodating and considerate (some members of the lunch party were a little late...) I've only been here for lunch, but the food has always been consistently good. I always look forward to dining at the Picnic House."

  • "Simple items with sophisticated flavors. Fantastic selections with enough variety to please everyone in our group. YUMM!"

  • "I had gone a couple of weeks ago and was impressed. So, I decided to return with my spouse. We had a really good experience. The service was super friendly, plus they were short one person . . . thus, they get extra points for degree of difficulty. We had a great suggestion for a glass of Pinot Blanc from Alsace; kudos to the server. EVERYTHING on the menu sounds amazing, so one is almost forced to choose the "sampler" portions. The kitchen fulfilled the promise. The mushroom soup was very fresh and perfectly salted. The salads had the right mix of ingredients and the roasted tomato sandwich was full flavored. PS - They are opening a cocktail bar next door - Harlow - so that will make the list too!"

  • "There isn't much to dislike about The Picnic House. Mains/Appetizers that I can vouch for: Duckfat Potatoes with Horseradish Crème, Beet Salad, Cast Iron Chicken Skillet, Pan-Fried Salmon, Stuffed Portobello Mushroom (while the stuffing was a bit on the dry side for me, the flavors were exceptional), Sirloin Coulotte with Parmesan Quinoa Polenta (even better with a dash of the Horseradish Crème on the side), and Cheese Crostini with Honey and Almonds. As far as drinks go, The vodka-based Wallflower was an interesting concoction of rhubarb and tarragon, while the whiskey Gardenhead was particularly refreshing on a hot Portland day. Great prices with a bustling vibe, Picnic House is definitely worth a try if you haven't been."

  • "Picnic House is a good choice for treating yourself, a friend or a small group to delicious hand-made food and beverages. On this occasion, we came here for a special lunch for a party of 8. We made an early (11:30) reservation as we've noticed it can get busy at the usual noon-ish rush. Service was friendly and fast and food was excellent. We like the way the menu is set up so you can choose combinations of lunch offerings if you wish to try more than just one item. The lower level can get a little noisy if there is an especially lively group but overall the noise is a moderate buzz. If you are alone or with 1 or 2 others the bar is a wonderful place to sit for skilled bartender service and often there is no wait even during lunch-rush."

  • "Tomato soup was good, salad good. My corn bread was cold and very dry - not moist as cornbread should be. Our server was very friendly, but he was serving many tables so we didn't see him much as the restaurant got busier. seemed a little shortstaffed. Good place but not great. I was a little disappointed, but i would try it again for lunch"

  • "This is a great spot, with an open, bustling space. We had a wonderful lunch - the roasted tomato sandwich was delicious! I had to go again the following week because I was still thinking about it. And, so cool that they take lunch reservations - even for two!"

  • "We really enjoyed this place. We chose it for it's location but we're surprised by the nice selection and quality of options. We didn't expect salmon and pork chops from a place called the picnic house. The service was quite good. All in all, a good place who dine when downtown."

  • "i can't believe that we haven't been to Picnic House before now. We had company staying over the week of July 4th and took a large group to lunch on our way home after an airport run. We all loved what we ordered. I can't wait to go back to have another BLT. The best bacon EVER!"

  • "A friend wanted to go here for her birthday. I'd never been. While the service was a touch slow for lunch time, it was overall quite good. I would recommend it to anyone, but keep your own eye on the time if you have constraints!"

  • "It is a cute place with great potential... the food is at times inconsistent. Lunch is crowded... beware."

  • "I wasn't impressed. This restaurant came highly recommended. We had cocktails, asparagus appetizer, mushroom soup, sirloin, salad and a dessert. All of it was just okay. I'm not saying it was bad, but there are a lot of other places I'd rather go. The food had no pizzazz - like no spices were really used. It was just...food."

  • "The food was very good Lots of interesting entrees, cocktails and appetizers. The restaurant was very noisy. It was hard to carry on a conversation. "

  • "two of the salads our group chose were not available, they had run out. However, we were not informed of this until our selection was made. The server even came back after we chose our second selection to say that salad had run out too. he was very nice and apologetic, but it would have been nice to know at the get-go what they had run out of."

  • "I'll keep this short and sweet. Great food, great ambience, and great service. Not too loud, but there's a fun energy here. This is a great place to take a date. The food is reasonably priced yet prepared to a very high standard. "

  • "My group of friends and I had dinner here before a night out downtown and everything about the picnic house was wonderful! Great drinks, tasty food, super friendly service, and a fantastic ambiance. I will definitely be back."

  • "The server was very busy with other tables and made it apparent that she had more important things to do than answer questions, etc. She was in such a hurry I felt like I was imposing to even place my order. "

  • "I have had lunch here twice. Once with a large party for a weekday lunch and most recently a Saturday lunch for two (me and my 7 year old daughter). While there is no specific children's menu, the staff is more than accommodating on making suggestions on what kids might like (plain grilled cheese, or plain turkey sandwich). My half wedge salad, cup of wild mushroom soup and small shrimp salad sandwich were all amazing. We shared a s'more pudding dessert; very good. I was expecting a quick bite to eat, but due to several large parties and not enough waitstaff, it was more like 1.25 hours. It was almost 10 minutes after we were seated before our waitress acknowledged we were there. And then we saw little of her after that. "

  • "The food was great, very creative. The restaurant itself is really nice and different. Why does it take so long to get seated? Even when you have made a reservation. I have been a couple of times to this restaurant and every time they have kept us waiting for at least ten minutes, reservation or not. And this, while the table they would eventually seat us all this time was already set. Very annoying and for me the reason not to visit again, despite the really great food and ambiance. One more thing, on hot days, please put the air conditioning on. "

  • "The Picnic House was an absolutely wonderful surprise to find as I was looking to take my mom out to lunch for a belated Mother's Day celebration. Fun, kind of quirky, atmosphere. This is a salad, sandwich, soup place at lunch and we enjoyed all three by getting a three combo where you get to pick a half of each and a cup of soup. We each picked two different salads, sandwiches and soups so we could try everything. The mushroom soup was fantastic, as well as the tomato one. We loved the salads. She got the berry salad and I the brown rice (which was incredible). The sandwiches left a little to be desired. I think they need to work on developing their flavors better. We got the prosciutto sandwich and the shaved chicken. "

  • "The picnic house has a great vibe with picnic tables and murals on the wall. It is unique fits Portland dinning wonderfully. My whole family loved the meal but I would have to say the berry salad was the best I've ever had. The tofu polenta in a mushroom was also superb. I recommend this restaurant to families or any group of adults going out to relax and enjoy Portland cuisine. "

  • "This is a great little find for lunch in Portland. The shaved chicken sandwich, mushroom soup and berry salad were all excellent and the service ensure that we maximized our lunch time. Glad I found this place as it will provide a new option for lunch"

  • "We stopped in here for a quick business lunch and found the atmosphere to be quirky and fun, the waitstaff to be friendly, welcoming, helpful and (oddly enough) very supportive, and the food to be just fantastic. The portion sizes are perfect so you don't have to pick between sandwich, soup or salad you can have all three, and everything tasted just right, the blend of flavors is spot on. I will definitely be going back on my next trip to PDX."

  • "Quick food and fast food can be very different, that's the case here. Located across the street from symphony hall they must have their fair share of people with "places to be", since they served up our delicious soups and salads right in the heels if a terrific cocktail and fast follow with the main course. We skipped desert, despite how good it looked just to avoid snoozing off in our seats! The place was comfortable, the service friendly and appropriately rushed...nice all around."

  • "Came to Portland for a work conference. Went to the Picnic House for dinner on a Saturday night with a group of friends/colleagues. Great food (favorites were the mushroom soup, duckfat roasted potatoes, grilled cheese sandwich, and maple brined pork chop), great service, fun atmosphere, and great prices (most of the top rated restaurants in this area were quite pricey; the Picnic House is moderately priced with many entrees under $20 and the entrees all came with sides, such as truffle mashed potatoes and asparagus). Casual dress and within walking distance of our hotel. Would definitely recommend and plan to come back the next time I'm in Portland."

  • "We were a little concerned as it sounded like some people had horrible experiences and we didn't know anything about Picnic House, but everything was perfect for us--everything! Plus the location being right across from the theatres made it a perfect pre-show dinner place. Mushroom soup (divine), short ribs and grilled cheese were excellent, and to also give props to the "Moulin Rouge" cocktail that was so refreshing - even though it was pouring rain and cold outside. Prices were very reasonable too, which is refreshing in and of itself. Highly recommend. "

  • "Came in before a meeting, server wanted to have me order a drink right away, I asked for the mushroom soup while I was looking over the drink menu. Soup came out quickly but was cool! Then waiter disappeared and NEVER returned to the table or even looked over. Finally the hostess who was paying attention came over and I told her I had a meeting and needed the check. Server came to say that he thought I was waiting..I was for him..They missed out on a dinner and a glass of wine order and a Very annoyed customer! He did comp the soup but too little too late! Server's please check with your guests, and Do not put on ignore!"

  • "I've had great experiences at The Picnic House so far. I appreciate the vegetarian options, especially the delicious soups. The service has been great. My husband and daughter stopped in for lunch yesterday, however (4/10/14) and were very frustrated. 2/3 of the tables in the restaurant were open and they and another party stood and stood in the entryway waiting to be seated and were ignored. They ultimately left and went elsewhere Word to the staff: Get people seated, or at least acknolwedge them, and they will be happy! It's unacceptable to be left standing around in a lobby when tables are open all over the restaurant."

  • "We made 6pm reservations for a Wednesday evening as we were going to a show across the street that started at 7:30. We were not sat until 6:15. We ordered an appetizer and two entrees. The appetizer came in reasonable time and tasted fantastic. Or entrees still had not arrived by 7:00. We had to track down our waitress and she said she would go check on them. She promptly brought them out...signifying that they had been sitting around. We ordered the short-ribs and the pork chop. Both were very dry - again signifying that they had been sitting around way too long. We had to rush to eat the few bites we could manage and then had to get up from our table to find our waitress to pay the bill. Bad food, bad service, bad experience."
