Diner Reviews
  • "First time dining here. Good service and good food to enjoy with our friends. We will return."

  • "This is one of my favorite spots in all of Fishtown! Great service and fantastic food perfectly prepared."

  • "Everything was very good. We found a parking spot on the street two doors down but on the sidewalk outside the restarants was trash and a random cheese steak smashed all over the sidewalk, luckily we dodged it ! So initially we were concerned but inside was clean and beautiful ."

  • "Six of us went to TPH for my birthday. We were greeted warmly and shown to our table. It is a small restaurant but you don't feel it. It is a BYOB and the wait staff made sure we had the right glasses for our different wines. The menu is small but just right. I loved my veal breast! I would highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "Atmosphere was great, and food was very creative. But the duck and the steak were too chewy. Good flavor, but the food texture needs to be improved."

  • "Family event, so there were two grandchildren in the group of six. Nice round table in a corner for us. Waiter and staff handled us all really nicely. Dinner was really good with couple of entrees and combinations of soups, salads, and starters taking care of our appetites. This night was at least our fifth dinner at PH - it's right at the top of our list for Philadelphia dining. Went home for family birthday cake."

  • "Those of us who have gone to Bibou over the years have done so strictly for the extraordinary quality of the cooking -- not the ambiance. Now there's a place you can experience equivalent modern bistro fare within a charming, polished and comfortable environment. There were three in our party and each of us would rate every aspect of our experience at the Painted Heron as excellent. Standout dishes included the arctic char gravlax with a pungent olive tapenade, the seared sea bass, the duck confit cavatelli and the beef bourgignon. Desserts were also wonderful, especially the creme brûlée. It's a byob and even the wine glasses were high quality. Highly recommended in all respects -- and very reasonably priced."

  • "Fabulous..we have enjoyed many meals at The Pickled Heron~ Food is always seasonal, creative and delicious. Todd, Daniella and staff truly care about your dinning experience. Make sure Shaun is your server. Foie gras was spectacular (as usual). Venison special was tender, cooked perfectly with perfectly prepared Brussels sprouts. Crème brulee rocked"

  • "Terrific food. Excellent, low-stress environs. Great staff. All good."

  • "Was very excited to try this Resturant. The three of us ordered the crispy duck entre as an appetizer. The crispy duck was served rare. Was not happy. Moved to the $14 grilled calamari and wondered where the rest of the order was. The high point of the meal was the foie gras course. Excellent..!! The jam paired deliciously as our 2001 Sauterne. Our waitress was nice, put up with jesting and had a fun spirit. We then split the steak Bavette and the seared stripped bass. Presentation was really sloppy and the fish was smelly and we three did not eat it. We mentioned this to the waiter, saw him tell the two chefs, but nothing was done about our concerns.....NOTHING. Creme brulet for dessert. No interest in returning."

  • "Got to try an array of duck-based spreads prepared in a way that was entirely new to me. All was delicious. The bass was the perfect temperature and consistency, with delicious fresh kale beneath. Our opera torte was great and the exact right size for two to share. A great dinner for my girlfriend and I, BYOB for a great time."

  • "I've come to the Pickled Heron countless times, and every time and every dish is great. The deserts are probably my favorite post, if I'm to be honest; they make everything from scratch, get as much local as possible, and reply care about their food. It's a great place to go if you're near Fishtown... or even if you aren't."

  • "We had our meeting at the Pickled Heron in their curtained off area and I must say that we were so caught up with the great ambience, food, and service that for a moment we forgot about the snow & ice. What a break it was for our gang to have our meeting there!"

  • "I have never had a bad dinner here as everything is always great. Get away from the chain restaurants and enjoy some fine dining here. It is a BYOB with street parking. We usually get all three courses so it can be a bit expensive but cheeper than a trip to France and they now take Credit Cards! I would like to tell you what is good here but the menu is ever changing due to what is fresh and in season. So don't be afraid to try something new as everything I have tried here has been exceptional. My tip would be to go early (6ish) as it is nice and quiet and you can make sure you get first choice on the menu. Enjoy!"

  • "What a surprise find for us -- The Pickled Heron. I'm glad that it was Restaurant Week and I couldn't get a reservation at any of the BYOBs I usually like in Old City! There was the Pickled Heron with an opening. The restaurant is darling -- from the moment we entered using the beautiful bronze heron door handle. Menu was interesting and had something for everyone in our group. Moules Frites was outstanding, as was the sea bass, duck and little neck clams in fennel stew. Delicious and reasonably priced. Easy parking. Will definitely return."

  • "This has been one of my favorite restaurants and I have brought friends to have the experience. On this occasion we brought 2 food conscious couples. The food and presentation/preparation was as usual wonderful, but the service was very irregular with long gaps between courses. There was a large party which seemed to gather all the service attention. We were worried on arrival when we were not greeted by Sean and it continued throughout long evening. Too bad."

  • "Pickled Heron is one of Philadelphia's secret restaurants. Everyopne who has ever neem here raves about it and comes back, but because it is not in the "Center City District" many people have never heard of it. All I can say is that Pickled Heron is the only restaurant worthy of getting into the car and driving 10 minutes rather than the ordinary course of walking out one's door and being at a restaurant in five minutes. The menu is diverse; the servcice excellent; the food preparation really good. Pickled Heron deserves much success."

  • "Went with high hopes given the positive reviews. Our experience did not match our expectations. The banquette seating was far too low for the table. The average height lady in our party was sat with her bust line level with the table top; far from comfy. Our request for a cushion was received with bemused shock and no cushion. Food was just as uninspiring. Salad drowning in underseasoned dressing, the pate woefully under seasoned. Vetables with both dishes were horribly over cooked general presentation poor. Restaurant was filled with the aroma of old cooking fat: far from appetising. We declined dessert, ordered coffee but got tea! The restaurant was very noisy but even so I find this mistake difficult to understand. We won't be back."

  • "I'd driven by this little, French BYO a few times and never noticed it. Glad I figured it out! The menu is on the small side, but has so many tasty items--like the mussels, foie gras, duck, and venison--that any Francophile will find food they want here. Services is great and It's a small eclectic space with plenty of room for a party of two or five times that. It's cozy, romantic, and BYO--perfect for a first date or a 15th date."

  • "For the first time in decades of enjoying Philly's food finds, I found myself booking my next dinner here before I even left the dining room. This amazing pair of chefs bring flavored together that can only be described as transcendence in your mouth. The pate that is sometimes on the charcuterie plate melts like meat butter on your tongue. The suckling pig special is wonderful, but even more fantastic is the cassoulet. Best cassoulet I've ever had in Philly, and perhaps the homey atmosphere added to the warm comfort of the subtle blending of flavors. The chocolate mousse dessert was so good the first time I had to get it again. I mean "I hope the chef is single" kind of good. Go. Now."

  • "The Pickled Heron was a nice change to the Center City restaurants we frequent - we're always looking for a different BYO to try out and this fit the bill. While I was not blown away by the food, it was very good and worth the night out."

  • "We waiting a really long time for service even though the restaurant wasn't very busy. The food was good though."

  • "The menu is very small, too small for my tastes. I had the beef entry, which was tasty, with polenta and a stuffed pepper on the side. The stuffing in the pepper didn't really work well. I had to play with it in my mouth, trying to figure out what it was. The service and ambiance were excellent, and I will go back another time. Every table was taken, so they have their following. I hope to be one of them someday."

  • "Always pleases but in a fresh an vibrant way. Seasonal changes in menu mean coming back often is always exciting. Service at great bistro food at reasonable prices. I'm glad this isn't on 13th street because I'd never get a table."

  • "Granddaughter and I had a lovely evening. She had just moved into this neighborhood and wanted to try the Heron-I had been there 3 times before and had good memories. Service is friendly, down to earth and not intrusive. The open kitchen makes a homey feel and you can see the chefs from almost anywhere in the restaurant as they begin your apps or dinner from scratch. Food arrives hot from the pan with vibrant flavors and aromas. The Pickled Heron has an unusual swing on flavors that will make your experience unique. A nice French flair with earthy combinations for Fall were very appropriate. From the butter to the coffee you feel that everything has been crafted carefully and especially for you."

  • "Pickled Heron's one of those great little out-of-the-way places where everyone tries soooo hard to make your time with them an amazing experience - & they succeed. Chef-owners Daniela and Todd deserves their success, and Sean makes everyone feel like a regular, even if you're a newbie (which we're not). The house-made charcuterie included an outstanding foie gras crème brûlée (not your everyday appetizer!), the pasta special tonight was carbonara with fabulous bacon, & the moules frites were perfect. My wife's scallops were huge & delicious (as was the pea purée that came with it), & my steak came with a large roasted pepper stuffed with.......steak, along with great polenta. Wonderful meal, wonderful time, wonderful night - it always is!"

  • "Yes it's is French Bistro like in menu, including Foie Gras, but every dish of the four diners, was wanting. My Mouiles Frites was leaking depth of broth flavor, although each mussel was plump, clean and cooked perfectly. The Frites, which I was salivating for, were bland, a little soggy and the dipping sauce tasted like 100% mayonnaise without any subtly. The fish of the day was severed with a coleslaw that seemed out of place with the fish itself. A pleasant evening but we done intend to return. Oh, and they don't babe gluten free bread."

  • "Hidden in an up n coming area of Fishtown, is one of the Gems of the Philly Culinary Scene. Passionate couple , dreamy waitstaff who truly care about your dinning experience. Food is fresh of the day in creative & magnificent preparations. Who would think of an almond pesto for the duck in peach sauce? Foie Gras is the best in the city.. I have tried them all! You will not be disappointed ..but surprised !"
