Diner Reviews
  • "Loved the ambience. We had an early dinner rez. and were seated right away. It however took about 10 mins. before we were acknowledged. Our waiter was nice but the service and flow was just poor. We were five at the table and basically mix reviews about the food. I had the Salmon and it was good."

  • "While the Penthouse's view is quite beautiful, the waiters courteous, and the curtained dining booths very pretty (albeit limited...not everyone gets one of those), I cannot say I had a positive dining experience here. Our 3-course lunch took 2.5 hours altogether, and restaurant was not particularly bustling while we were there. Portions were small, prices were high, and they had the nerve to add a 20% gratuity to our receipt (for a party of 5?!). I was excited to try this place for DineLA and I really wanted to have a wonderful experience here, but alas, this will probably be my last time in this restaurant."

  • "My boyfriend and I went here for DineLA this past weekend. The fixed price menu was tasty and the service was great throughout the meal. The restaurant was kind of loud and the tables are packed very close together. It definitely started to feel more like a bar than a restaurant as it got later."

  • "Came here during Dine in LA week. Lunch was great-three course meal! Hd never been and would definitely return. The ambience and views are amazing."

  • "I guess that is how youg people have fun, with loud "music", yelling and getting drunk, so if you waynt to enjoy your dinner, ask for a table the farthest from the young scene at the bar zone, or better, go to the brunch on sunday"
    Dined on 7/25/2014
  • "The food and view are excellent, but be prepared to a deal with a waitstaff who are unattentive and management that doesn't care. Waited an hour and fifteen minutes to order the main course."
    Dined on 7/25/2014
  • "This is an edgy, hip, gorgeous place, with spectacular views of the surrounding area from almost all seats. But the decor is not skin-deep; the food is just as cutting edge. Do not--repeat, do not--miss the pappardelle main dish. There is no way to make a more perfect pasta dish. The sauce: incredible; the ingredients: fresh; the pasta: the textbook definition of "al dente." I've been thinking about it for days afterward. Appetizers, main dishes & desserts are varied & extremely well prepared, with beautiful presentation. There are some excellent values on the wine list--e.g., the Luigi Bosca Malbec. Service is professional, with the waiters knowledgeable & articulate (esp. Ashley). But the young, very noisy crowd does inhibit conversation."

  • "Great view!!! Majority of the customers are young people and most likely singles. Great place for hang out."

  • "Love the beauty of this place. Great staff and food is always fresh. Perfect to escape above the ocean and treat yourself."

  • "coffee was cold, could not get hot coffee, service poor"

  • "I am a regular, and I am a Santa Monica resident. Go have a drink, food is good, and ask for a booth! If you don't want to be on top of other people, don't go during the "rush hour" lunch period or at prime dinner hours. And if you do, and you want to be able to hear each other speak, ask for a booth away from the loud humans. The 360 degree view of Santa Monica and the Los Angeles area is PERFECT. Enjoy!!! The Hotel has been through many renovations over the many years, and it's now a very hip, modern, "cool", trendy place to hang-out."

  • "Loved this place for lunch! Stunning views, the dine LA menu was perfect for lunch and the food was very good along with the service. Thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience and cant wait to go back. I look forward to dining in the early evening to enjoy the views and bar scene."

  • "the hostess who took us to the table was very unfriendly. I had asked from the reservation through Open Table for a table by the window. But here they knew nothing about? And the hostess also did not help here? But the food is really good and the other waiters where very friendly!! we had a great evening!!"

  • "one year anniversary and no special treatment... service was slow.. took about 15 minutes to bring dessert out after they took away our entree plates"

  • "Food is average for the price. View is fantastic and thats the only reason I go."

  • "Top of a beautiful boutique hotel. Table with a perfect view of the ocean. Dishes beyond generous and cooked to perfection. An unbelievable price for a DineLA lunch. We enjoyed the crab cake, and the vine ripened gazpacho for our appetizers and the linguini pomodoro and crispy skin salmon for our entrees. The crispy skin salmon is featured as an entree on their dinner menu. Absolutely perfect. For dessert we had the profiteroles, chocolate lava cake and creme brûlée. Divine. We had an 11:15 reservation and it did get very busy. They were short of chefs in the kitchen so we had to wait a little for our dessert. Our waiter was very apologetic and overall the service was excellent."

  • "Food, and service was good and well presented. The view was fantastic. The noise level was something else. Heavy and loud thumping all the time. It wasn't a good dining experience and we wouldn't go back. I guess you have to be "cool and young" to enjoy that kind of environment."

  • "The restaurant has a great view of the Santa Monica Beach and it's a great place for dates. The food is good but nothing superb or special. The one turnoff is the automatic 20% gratitutde added to my bill. I don't mind tipping 15% - 20% but I want to be the one who decides not restaurant."

  • "Went for DineLA lunch. Good menu which included dessert so got a good sampling of the restaurants menu, very good; crabcake was all crab, no fillers; salmon cook perfectly.Service exceptional; accomodations were made to one w/food allergy.Great lunch w/amazing views."

  • "It was a little disappointing that we had to wait over 20 minutes for our table even though we had a reservation. But other than that we had a great experience. The food was delicious and well cooked. The ambiance is lovely and the ocean views are amazing."

  • "I had lunch here during restaurant week. The food is slipping a bit. Perhaps there is a new chef. Otherwise, everything else is excellent, as usual."

  • "There were 5 of us on Sunday evening at 6pm. Made a reservation online. Host was really sweet. Was seated at a nice booth with curtains and a pretty view. Food was good. Not too crowded or loud. A nice way to end the weekend with friends in a pleasant atmosphere."

  • "Excellent cocktails and the food is delicious. I'm particularly fond of the appetizers and sides: the beet salad, macaroni and cheese, mushrooms, kale with poached egg. Great places with great ambiance. It's definitely on my list of places for special occasions."

  • "Can't go wrong with the tables by the window, the starters with the Maine Scallops. The service is excellent and the focus is on the customer's experience from the moment you enter the restaurant. Enjoy the sunset and the atmosphere because it doesn't get any better than The Penthouse!!!"

  • "Reception was friendly, table was voice with a view. Service was good.Food was fair. Ordered duck which mist have been a mallard, Hard, dry tasteless. Scallops not very interesting. Service, good and friendly, expensive wine but good. Will not go back, as there are better tasting restaurants for the money level."

  • "I have been going to this location since it was "Toppers" then the "Gate of Spain" and now" The Penthouse". How can you turn a million dollar view on a spectacular beach day into a 2 bit lunch is beyond my comprehension."

  • "What can I say - the food was excellent - great service with a smile - knowledgeable, very positive, wonderful view, ideal setting-- definitely one of the top hot spots! This is a true GEM."

  • "Excellent food. Ordered the blueberry muffin french toast and the salmon flatbread. They were both delicious, but the french toast was AMAZING. Nice view of the beach from where you're sitting. Valet is very reasonable. $6 for 3 hours that you can have stamped after your meal. I would definitely go back to The Penthouse Restaurant!"

Vibrant Bar scene with DJ - stunning sunset views and scenic north, south, west photo opportunities. Service was attentive. Menu had something for everyone. Outstanding flavors. Ate in a private booth with sheer curtains separating the tables. White Leather accents."

  • "I'll keep this short... We booked a table through Open Table for 8:30. On arrival at 8:30 we were told there would be a small delay, maybe 20 minutes. Two hours later, after approaching the desk 7 times to hear the same feeble excuses that other folk had arrived late so everything was running late, we finally got a table - that's 10:30pm when we were supposed to be at our next location!! There was little apology other than comp'd drinks (which were offered after 90 mins and several complaints but took 3 reminders to actually appear!). The food was average. Don't bother coming here for dinner - just use the bar to access the great views."
