A word from The Peerless Restaurant
Located in the heart of Ashland’s Historic Railroad & Gallery District, The Peerless is a lively neighborhood restaurant, wine and cocktail bar, just a garden apart from our historic boutique hotel THE PEERLESS HOTEL.

Our dinner menu features an array of small plates, as well as steaks, and seafood that capture the flavors of the seasons and essence of the Pacific Northwest. Our amazing executive Chef Ketner previously worked as Executive Chef of the highly acclaimed “Hilo Bay Café” on the Big Island of Hawaii, where for over 10 years he helped bring traditional Hawaiian cuisine and Pacific Rim fusion to new heights, earning it the “Hale ‘Aina Award” for “Best Big Island Restaurant” four times. Ketner has also generated national media attention in magazines such as Food and Wine, Gourmet, and Sunset Magazine and is included in the 2013 edition of Best Chefs America.

Cheers,

Diner Reviews
  • "We have been fans of The Peerless for years, and until now, have never been disappointed. We chose to dine here for our anniversary for that reason. The food was not up to the Peerless' standards, perhaps the result of a change in chefs. The wait times between courses was very long. Our waiter was great, and looked professional, but some of the staff looked disheveled."

  • "We were asked by our waitress if we were celebrating a special occasion. We were pleasantly surprised to be asked. We replied it was one of our birthdays. We anticipated some recognition. None appeared."

  • "Elegant and efficient! The ambience of the garden dinning is wonderful."

  • "The food and dining room were wonderful. Our waitress was a bit odd and we had annoying flies pestering us throughout our meal and we were seated inside.... but I would definitely dine and stay at this location again in the future."

  • "We so enjoyed our dinner at The Peerless. They accommodated our desire to be seated outside and even offered to adjust the umbrella to keep the sun out of one of our parties eyes. The food choices were interesting and prepared well. The French Onion soup was outstanding! A very nice evening. We didn't go back towards the bar but I would like to another time. Plus, we loved the small plates."

  • "We dine one evening at the Peerless when we come to Ashland each year and it's lovely to sit in the garden with its strings of lights and gentle fountain on a summer evening. My husband was very happy with the halibut, and the strawberry rhubarb pie was yummy. The servers are cordial and helpful and it's always a relaxing, enjoyable time. We have also eaten there pre-theatre and that works too - the staff are prepared for both."

  • "We arrived and thought we could sit outdoors. This was not possible. The host put us inside, ok with this. However his rude behavior at seating us was not expected. We will not go back."
    Dined on 8/15/2014
  • "There's a new chef from Hawaii, and the food hasn't come together. The crab cakes were mushy and nob crab-full (too much filler); the ono was slightly overcooked and the sauce didn't quite go; and the dessert with mascarpone instead of whipped cream was cloying. Staff was a bit too much in your face."

  • "Wonderful ambiance and interesting menu full of unique dishes. Fun to find something new to try. Great combinations of flavors in food and drink. The soup is an amazing treat. The salads are delicious. The small plates are clever. Wonderful service! I truly enjoyed my meal and time spent there."

  • "We all gathered before our play on Saturday evening. We had an early reservation. By the time our waitress took our order, the special fish had sold out. The waitress justified the news by telling us that she had to tell 2 additional tables that they had run out of the item. Later, an incorrect item was brought to the table, but our other diner did not make a fuss. We traditionally dine at this restaurant 3-4 times a season, when we come up to attend plays. The rest of our meal was tasty. We will be back for another visit."

  • "The food at Peerless is always wonderful and adventurous. The wine delighted the group and the desserts were a fitting conclusion."
    Dined on 8/8/2014
  • "Food was very good, service was good, but couple of requests got slow response. We had the window table on a hot evening, evidently not a good idea. They did make the effort to get us out in time for our play!"
    Dined on 8/2/2014
  • "I found the decor and food to be excellent. They offer a little something for all palates. I had the watermelon and arugula salad. It was great. Had the sampler plate and strawberry rhubarb pie for dessert. It was all great, service was excellent. Definitely a place to revisit on the next trip to Ashland."

  • "New chef from Hawaii. Excellent food with a Hawaiian flair. Sampler plate with chicken wings, sliders, and hummus with pita bread excellent. Short ribs excellent. Very busy Happy Hour Bar in restaurant with lots of noise that carries over into the restaurant. Decor is straight out of the 1980's."

  • "I commend the good service, the new chef, and the quiet atmosphere. Two good places to eat: the Peerless and Coquina."

  • "My husband and I had dinner at the peerless before heading off to the play. The food was outstanding, the atmosphere was great and service was impecable. It was a great beginning to a wonderful evening. Gourmet food at its best. It a "must-do" restaurant!Magical"

  • "We had a lovely dinner in the garden. We had a very nice table with a view of the flower topped fountain. The service was great. The spicy prawn appetizer was excellent as was the eggplant Parmesan. The only weak item was the bland rubbard pie."

  • "Consistently great food & service, wonderful ambience, great gardens."

  • "This was our first visit to the Peerless restaurant. The outdoor dining area looks very appealing but we opted for the cool and quiet interior dining area due to the afternoon heat. The service was first-rate; the staff kept in mind that we had a theater date to make and attended our order with that in mind. The fish dish was the best my companions could remember ever having. The seasoning and sauces were perfect. My steak was perfect. Dessert was another treat. All in all the Peerless will make your dining experience something to remember."

  • "A new chef but as good as ever... with added Hawaiian touches. Small plates and appetizers add a bright flair. Thoughtfully assembled wine list... almost reasonably priced."

  • "We drive I-5 from Seattle to Southern California about six times a year and we found The Peerless Restaurant online and tried it out. WE LOVED IT and decided that Ashland and The Peerless would be a stop for us when we could do it. We never had a bad experience until last Saturday night. The service and food were not good at all. This was the first time this had happened. We will probably try again in hopes that this was just something that happened once and that the quality is still up there."

  • "The food here is great and the service staff, as well. However, I liked the menu better when there were more small plates. I'm not usually going to come to a place like this for a burger....drop them. I'd prefer more small plates and more entree choices...perhaps leave the regular entrees alone but have more specials."

  • "We have been here for dinner on a number of occasions but thought we'd try their happy hour. We were not disappointed. It was just as good as their full course dinners, and the service was outstanding."

  • "We have eaten at Peerless every time we are in Ashland, either for happy hour or full dinner. This time we did both on consecutive days and enjoyed it greatly. I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone."

  • "Some in our party had hearty while others had light. Always consistently good. Waitress was attentive to our time constraints. Nice outdoors but because it was so hot we ate in the pleasant indoor area."

  • "We love coming here with other couples as they have such a wide variety of dining options on their menu. You can do a small plate up to a full entree with whatever delectable sides appeal. We shared the crispy kale with our entrees, all the vegetable sides are delicious. I really like the range of options, big appetite satisfied as well as the not so hungry. Our server was so nice, always a great dining experience."

  • "We come to Ashland each year for the plays and to go to Peerless. Wonderful food, a great bar, and friendly staff make this a " must-go" each time we are in town. I can't wait to go back next year."

  • "This restaurant has been a gem for years. Our largest visit was wonderful as usual."

  • "The highlight of our dinner was the broccoli cheddar soup. It came with a generous portion of toasted cheddar floating on top. Truly spectacular."

  • "Dinner on Tuesday was outstanding, so I ordered the same items. Unfortunately, my rare lamb was overcooked this time. They did redo it for me, so all was well. Just not consistent."
    Dined on 6/14/2014
  • "Oysters on the half shell were very tasty. I tried the small rack of lamb. Delicious, and cooked to perfection, (rare). Fillet of beef very good. Beet salad very tasty. Service was excellent and the server was knowledgeable."
    Dined on 6/10/2014
  • "There was a lot of great choices on the small plate menu. I ended up with the sampler of the night along with Lamb meatballs and calamari that were both 10's. "

  • "This little Ashland gem is always on our list of must do restaurants in Ashland where we attend OSF. Adjacent to the charming and timeless Peerless Hotel, this restaurant stays in front of the changes in the culinary arts and presents well designed and well balanced offerings, reasonable portions, an excellent but not overpowering wine list and pleasant efficient service. "

  • "Food, when it arrived, was fantastic. Had to wait half an hour for bread! Had to wait half an hour for someone to take the dessert order. We were consistently ignored or neglected by our waiter. I would recommend it - with the proviso that the food is wonderful, and the service might be terrible. Maybe it was just our waiter. I sure hope so, for the sake of the restaurant and the chef."

  • "We returned to Peerless for the third year in a row on our annual Shakespeare Festival week and were disappointed that the quality of the food had declined. The hamburger was overcooked, the mac'ncheese with pork was heavy and had a strange flavor and the fish was not up to par and served with broccolini that had turned yellow. Our previous meals there had been delicious, so we were very surprised at this."
    Dined on 5/28/2014
  • "We've eaten at Peerless numerous times while at Ashland's Shakespeare Festival and have been through several changes in ownership and chefs. While the quality of the food and ambience was excellent, we (seniors) felt the restaurant might benefit by a return to the many appetizer portions the menu had in the past (for us smaller eaters). The quality of the food was superb, but found us only ordering an appetizer or two for the four of us and three entrees. The wine selection is excellent and fairly priced and spirits are ample pours and very good selection. We were too full for dessert."

  • "pleasant dinner. darkly decorated in a calm style & chairs are comfortable. Its on the pricy side, ex entree for $17 scallops: 2 "pretty good!" large scallops, in a little sauce, on a little plate. Veggies very yummy, not overdone $5 more. All pieces of the meal are more $, unless you get a casserole like Mushroom risotto (mine made vegan), good but way greasy $25. Fancy tacos "alright, nothing special" The 7" mushroom pizza "very good" Crusty pan fried chicken (? name) "tender, moist & very good". The water is not filtered (it often is in Ashland, even in inexpensive restaurants ). So 2 hours, 5 meals and 1 glass of wine for $140.oo Two of us said they would come back and check out the happy hour some day. We were all glad we went."

  • "My wife, a good friend, and I enjoyed a very fine meal at The Peerless. All three of us agreed that the food was outstanding (My NY steak was terrific -- tender, flavorful, and done perfectly!) Other dishes we particularly enjoyed included the duck confit, butternut gnocchi, flash-fried kale, and asparagus bisque. The interior of the restaurant is subtly rustic and quiet; we could easily hear each other without raising our voices. Our server was attentive without hovering, which we appreciated. The Peerless has a well-deserved reputation in Ashland, and we are looking forward to more visits, particularly as the weather warms and the terrace is open for dining. I would definitely recommend this place to others -- foodies particularly!"
