Bringing the essence of the kitchen to each table, chefs will serve, describe and answer diner's questions, creating an authentic experience for each customer while placing emphasis on the process behind transitioning food to plate. Similar to dining at a chef's table, diners will be able to connect with the local and global inspiration and experience of each chef and behind every dish, in an upscale, casually elegant atmosphere, complimented by a thoughtful international wine list.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "I opted for the 8 course over the 5 to get the full experience. This was an unfortunate call, because the 3 additional items (scallop, foie gras, and ice cream sandwich) not only lacked quality when compared to the rest of the meal, but were objectively mediocre. Fortunately, the 5 main dishes (eggplant, egg, boulliabase, spare rib, and cake) were excellent. Drinks were hit and miss. Rabbit hole and Mezcal/Chartreuse drinks were the faves Overall service was good, but the spacing between courses was odd--sometimes 3-5 minutes but at one point we had an over 25 minute wait. Sommelier was also overly pushy on drinks, but that likely comes down to personal preference. Ambience was great. Would possibly go back, but only for the 5 course."

  • "The Pass has an innovative menu complete with foam, liquid nitrogen-frozen ingredients, and foods masquerading as other foods. The price paid for that innovation in this case is that the flavor of the dishes do not quite match the level delivered by more traditional peers, or even the best MG-themed establishments. Make no mistake, The Pass food is good- it just isn't great. However, when you consider the very creative menu, beautiful presentation, absolutely great service, excellent wine / cocktail pairings, and a cool atmosphere, it still makes for a good deal overall and is worth a try."

  • "After finally making reservations weeks in advance, it was a bit of a disappointment. Nothing stellar here. The cocktail pairings were delicious, but food itself was just okay. Food presentation was nice though."

  • "We did the 8 course dinner and were just underwhelmed.. Wonderful staff and visual presentation of the food was good. However, we enjoyed eating only 3 of the 8 courses and that was disappointing."

  • "I must have said interesting at least ten times during the evening. The food was Interesting and inventive but delicious was not my first thought. It seems that The Pass is more of a high priced wine bar with tastings of food. The service was good not great. I left the restaurant feeling disappointed and ripped off. I wouldn't recommend this place. There are much better fine dining experiences in Houston."

  • "I knew this was a tasting menu, however, I interpreted the menu a bit differently than intended. In the left column are the #of courses, either 5 or 8. On the right are one word descriptions of each meal, "5/8 - Eggs" and drink pairings listed beneath each description, a/b 10 options. To me this meant select the number of courses and one of the food descriptions, ex., 5 courses, Egg, and you will get 5 courses with Egg as the theme of each dish. I asked the server how this process worked and she did not understand nor answer my question, but carried on the discreet nature of the Pass. After that small annoyance, all was well. Overall, food was interesting, service was great, and I was satisfied by the end."

  • "They made my boyfriend's birthday so special with the special seating and note on the menu. We were blown away by the service and creativity of the food. It was a fantastic evening - worth every penny"

  • "Great menu with rotating flavors, dishes and an experience you will never forget. This is a once-in-a-lifetime type of experience, highly recommended."

  • "Five of us celebrated my mother's 87th birthday earlier this week. We started the 8-course adventure at 6:30pm and we were finally finished at 10:00pm. Never rushed, never felt there were long lags between courses. Extremely inventive presentation and tastes. Quite unusual, and very enjoyable. Every wine was paired perfectly with each course. A great place to celebrate a special event."

  • "table ready at exactly time it was booked for. Nice room with comfortable seats. Menu was 5 or 8 course tasting menu with excellent wine and unusually an option to pair with cocktails instead. Only down was wine tended to arrive some time before food so the temptation was to drink it. Stand out courses for us were the asparagus and the scallop, and husband doesn't even like scallops. The wild garlic cake and tomato was a great dessert, who would have believed it. The cheese course just didn't work - we left ours and so I noticed did the tables on either side. Be prepared to be at the table for abt 3hrs. Tasting option may not suit those looking for more traditional 32 oz steak but we will be back."

  • "We dined at The Pass for our 10th anniversary this week and had the 8-course menu with wine parings. The service was amazing. The food was excellent, too; this is definitely a place for diners who appreciate quality food and unique preparation. The one thing that disappointed me was that even after 8 courses, I was not entirely full. I expected a heartier portion for some of the later courses. The meat course came with two small pieces of pork spare ribs. It was a little disappointing. For most of the courses, I did not have enough food to go with the pour of wine they gave me. The preparation of everything was excellent, I just wanted a little more substance throughout the meal."

  • "My husband and I are foodies, and we have eaten fine meals all over the world. We've also eaten at most of the better restaurants in Houston. This was our third time to eat at the Pass. We continue to maintain that it is the best restaurant in Houston. Creative, delicious food, impeccable service, lovely ambience."

  • "Definitely in top 5 list of fine food restaurants in Houston. Excellent service, good ambiance; very good waiting staff to customer ratio (never waited to be served), yet not intrusive. Impressed with the attention to detail (our menu had a congratulatory comment for the occasion). Atmosphere is good but not intimate in case you want a romantic dinner(you may be heard by your neighbours at the next table, so reserve yourself). Open plan kitchen, greatly organized. Works like a clock. Vegetarian tasting menu available! Notable wine pairing, especially for some courses where wine alone is barely drinkable but when paired with the food - excellent combination. Very good & inexpensive champagne to start the dinner. Very affordable, will be back"

  • "Best, creative, most beautifully appointed in Houston. Servers are incredibly knowledgeable."

  • "Although rather expensive we found the food and presentation excellent. I did the five course ,and my wife the eight course, and we were both pleased with the range of tastes and accompanying explanations. We would certainly return but because of the expense it is more of a "special occasion" type of place in our opinion."

  • "Took my mother for her birthday and had the 8 course tasting with wine pairing. This is hands down the finest dining experience you'll have in Houston. The staff were exceptional as well!"

  • "First visit to The Pass - was not blown away. Had the 8 course menu paired with wine. Two of the dishes were excellent and two were not good at all. The smoked trout was bad in so many ways - texture and flavor profiles were seriously off. Egg yolk course was almost a hit as the advertised truffle flavor was nowhere to be found. Beef and langoustine dish were excellent. Peas and carrots was not good. Service is outstanding. Staff are very passionate and knowledgable. I will give The Pass another try once they change their menu. "

  • "Fantastic! I had very high expectations of The Pass from other reviews I have read and all of the mentions it gets in various press regarding Houston hot spots. From the moment we entered til the moment we left we were taken very good care of. All four of us in my party ordered the 8 course chef's tasting menu with the wine pairings. Everything seemed to be timed perfectly; just enough space between courses to not feel rushed but simultaneously not feel neglected. A couple of my friends found some of the wine pairings too sweet for their liking but I was happy as a clam. I did find the ambiance a bit cold as there were white walls and black furniture and not much else, but the view of the kitchen is neat! "

  • "For the price we were paying for a five course meal with pairings I was expected to be blown away. The wine and service were impeccable but the food left so much to be desired."

  • "I had heard a lot about the Pass previously. We chose the 8 course tasting menu and out of the 8 courses, only 3 really stood out. From the reviews I had read/heard perviously I went in with high expectations. I would definitely go again but I'll wait until the menu changes. The service was outstanding and the wine pairings were fantastic. I've had pairings at other locations that didn't work for me. These worked fantastically."

  • "Took my boyfriend here for his birthday and everything was very special! The staff was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly, all their recommendations on food pairings were off the charts, and the food was just outstanding. The ambiance is romantic but there were also a couple of tables with families. Loved it and can't wait to go back."

  • "Service and style was just perfect again, but I do have to say that the ingenuity and specialness? of the courses seemed to fall short of our first visit. For the level of cost of the dinner, it really needs to be spot on and sad to say, I would put 50 % of the meal at perfect and the other 50% at medium. "

  • "We had high hopes that Pass would be as good as its price promised. The first course was encouraging: an asparagus dish comprising a delicious soup and a piece of asparagus breaded and cooked like a croquette. It was excellent, A+. But alas, the following courses could not keep up the pace. The dessert was especially disappointing. I gave each of my five courses letter grades, ranging from A+ down to C. Good restaurants (and Pass is a good restaurant) sometimes have off nights. Great restaurants do not have off nights. We leave great restaurants smiling no matter the size of the bill. We left Pass smiling, but only because it is impossible not to smile at the friendly staff. "

  • "Definetely great food and great service! The wine pairing it was not up to "pairing"; some wines were too youngs and some were too strong. We choose the 8 courses with wine pairing ... why charging $10 for 2 cups of coffee with the desserts?"
    Dined on 4/29/2014
  • " Excellent service and attention. My wife, son and I had the 8 course meal over a three hour period. Each one except the dessert was absolutely perfect. The dessert was good but compared to the rest I recommend they thing of something else. The wine paring/dish pairing is truly impressive......too bad one can't find them or drink in other places in Houston. "

  • "It is always a pleasure eating at a place that puts efforts into everything about a meal. The ambiance, the food, the wine, the drink and the service. Impeccable! This is a place that I can highly recommend. "

  • "I love food that challenges. I love food that explores. I love precision in beautiful presentation. I love thoughtful pairing of food and wine. So why am I struggling to "ooh and aah" without reservation over The Pass? 2 of us ordered the 5 course meal, 2 the 8 course choice. Cocktails, champagne and a wine pairing were ordered. Most of the courses/pairings were breath taking. Some missed and we were in general agreement about the hits and misses. This is the kind of place I want to love and support without reservations. I believe in this kind of restaurant. The staff is phenomenal, the ambience wonderful. Maybe I am being unrealistic wanting each course to amaze me MORE? Spoiled by the outrageously good stuff? We shall return!"

  • "Recently, I have become a little jaded working my way through Allison Cook's Top 100 list. A lot of good restaurants, but very few that knock the dining experience out of the ballpark. Our visit to The Pass on April 19, 2014, re-energized my love for a fabulous dining experience. The restaurant experience is completely focused on the food -- from the minimalist decor to the white serving dishes. Each course was a work of art -- thoughtful and inspiring and different. There are times when nothing, but good ol' comfort food will do, but The Pass is for those times when you need brain candy and surprising experience for your palate. "

  • "While the service was impeccable, the food tried too hard at times. And there was a bit too much of an Asian influence which wasn't what we thought we'd get based off all the major media reviews (as well as Yelp). A little too much salt in at least half the courses. The service was extraordinary -- perhaps the best I've ever experienced and I've eaten at top restaurants all over the world. Non invasive, but friendly in a charming, gentle and kindly way. I'd like to go back sometime during the winter months and see how the menu would be changed. The Asian influence may have had to do with the near-Easter/Spring time of year."

  • "Definitely worth trying, but if you're looking for the absolute best tasting menu in town, it's gotta be Mark's or Kiran's. The white painted brick walls wasn't my style and the wife specifically said it was not a romantic venue. Expect detailed descriptions of each dish and wine [we both did the wine pairing, celebrating our anniversary] from a very knowledgeable, non-snooty staff. The pastry chef at The Pass knocks it out of the park. I agree with some of the other non-five-star reviews. Many of the components/techniques are unnecessary and seem to be the work of a very ambitious, talented, experimenting young chef. The trouble is coherency is not always present. Will most likely go back, but it will probably be a while."

  • "Had a lovely meal at The Pass but we all found the portions rather small. My son and husband were still hungry after the 5 course tasting menu."

  • "I was excited about going to The Pass. It fulfilled all of my expectations. The atmosphere is just right and the views of the open kitchen added to the experience. The most impressive element was the food and the food pairings. I took the 8 course dinner with wine pairings. It turned out to be a wonderful experience. The food was excellent, surprising, delicate at times and robust at others. My favorites on the day: smoked trout: a perfect blend of flavors and textures each adding to make the whole dish, wonderfully paired with a Sicilian Frappato. Other dishes to remember: Onion, Asparagus and notably the Ricotta with the pairing of the Moscato Chinato. This was superb. I will go back."
