A word from The Palm Court
Tea has been a long tradition at the Drake Hotel. The Palm Court began serving Tea during the holiday season of 1982 and dignitaries the likes of the late Princess of Wales, Princess Diana, Hilary Clinton have sipped and supped here since. In 1958, Queen Elizabeth joined us for tea at the Drake.

The uniqueness of the beauty of the room centers around a gorgeous limestone fountain with a giant urn as its center motif dating 275 years old, this French bronze by designer David Williams. Most importantly, the ambiance of this afternoon affair is greatly enhanced by the live harp music performed Wednesday through Sunday by our musicians dressed in classical evening gown attire.

It was nearly perfect but for two things: it was very crowded (tables are seated extremely close together) and it was VERY loud. In my mind, I had pictured something more intimate and quiet. Our tea sweets and tea were excellent, as was the service. It would have been nice to have been served ice water along with our tea (we noticed it on other tables). OpenTable did a great job of changing my reservation when I needed to.

The service and ambiance was wonderful but the food served for the afternoon tea wasn't good. For the price I expected much better. Much better experience at the Russian Tea Room because food was tastier with more variety.

I took my 6-year old daughter for Afternoon Tea and she really enjoyed the experience. She loved having real tea in real china cups. The tea selection is nice and there are a couple of kid-friendly, caffeine-free options, like the chocolate mint tea. The service was good and they do a nice job with selections of petite sandwiches and pastries for the kids. Overall, we enjoyed the experience and would go back again.

Having enjoyed Afternoon Tea at the Prince of Wales Hotel in Niagara-on-the-Lake, the Empress Hotel in Victoria B.C., and the Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City, we were very disappointed with Afternoon Tea at the Drake. The "tea" itself was delicious, the scones, sandwiches and little cakes, however, were a huge disappointment. Too many small cakes, the scones were terribly small, and the sandwiches scanty. You provided lots of clotted cream and fruit preserves, but nothing to put it on.

My friend and I love to catch up and visit here, as your reservation is for an hour and a half, but if they are not busy you can sit as long as you would like. This venue is a great place to visit, since it is fairly quiet, and you are not sitting on top of the table next to you (not to mention glamming up a bit for tea which is always fun). The food is pretty spectacular, albeit on the pastry side, but you can always request additional sandwiches if you'd like to take it easy on the petit-fours. Service is great-always making sure your tea is full and if you need anything else. They also asked if we would like them to take a picture (which is great, because who wants to be caught in a fancy place with a selfie stick - kidding!)

While the Drake is still the best place for formal afternoon tea, it seems like they need to step up their game. The service was not what I am used to at the Drake, and the food isn't either. While the service was okay, it could have been better and the food was good, the pastries and dessert wasn't as good as usual.

As someone who has been fortunate to take Tea at some hallowed haunts in London and Hong Kong for this wonderful afternoon ritual, The Palm Court was a wonderful find. The setting was elegant, the sandwiches and pastries delicious and the service attentive and friendly. Our daughter wanted Tea to be part of her 18th birthday celebration. We happened to be in Chicago at the time and were thrilled with our experience at The Palm Court.

I've been taking my granddaughter to the Palm Court for years for her birthday as a very special occasion. We have always loved the tradition, the ambiance and the service. The food was never "great" - but the whole experience was wonderful overall. This year we were not only disappointed in the service but mostly the food, which, I have to say, was completely forgettable and some of it inedible. I am sad that I will be changing this very special tradition for her next birthday so that we can go somewhere that will be remarkable and memorable. We also forgot her umbrella and after several calls with no response had to return downtown to try and claim it.

Have been to the Drake for Afternoon Tea many, many times. It never disappoints. This time I was accompanied by a very special friend who had never had this treat before. It was delightful. The service is impeccable, the scones, sandwiches and treats are carefully prepared, tasty and beautifully presented. Enjoying them along with our choice of tea, with the beautiful music provided by the harpist, made for a perfect afternoon. This is a treat for anyone! Wonderful for any afternoon but also terrific for special occasions and do NOT miss it in December when it is in its holiday glory!

Thank you Drake Palm Court for continuing the tradition of afternoon tea. It is a lovely experience. It is a wonderfully quiet and peaceful environment. The staff were positive and attentive. The room is nice. The teas offered are are okay, but not as full of a selection as I would like to see, and can be found elsewhere. The tea sweets and sandwiches presentation is stingy, especially for the price. However, they will bring more if you ask, but it does not create a feeling of abundance of selection when it is brought out. You can get a full afternoon tea at Russian Tea Time for much less, and richer and fuller stocked 3-tier tray. The food is better there, and their tea selection is the best I have seen so far in this country.

We had afternoon tea at the Palm Court and it was sensational. The service was impeccable and the surroundings quite elegant. We loved the food which was very imaginative and there were many different teas from which to choose. Best of all, they offered extra sandwiches and pastries at no extra cost. The price was only $40 - much lower than a comparable place in Toronto which would be about another $25 at least.

To celebrate a birthday, four of us met for a classic tea in the Palm Court at the Drake. Sandwiches, cake, scones and pastries were beautifully presented with a special plate for a gluten-free guest (order 24 hours ahead) and extra sandwiches for the hungry. When our waiter noted presents, he inquired about the occasion and soon enough the harpist played "Happy Birthday" as he presented a candle-bedecked brownie to the honoree. The Drake does not disappoint!

Mother/daughter tea. Very nice experience. Beautiful venue. My daughter's vegan, they were very accomodating. The food was delicious! Generous tea service. Yum!!! Yum!!! Yum!!! Must make reservation!!!! Pricey, but worth every penny. on the flip side, we had a 4:30 reservation, we had eaten a light lunch to get ready for this, we enjoyed the tea, sandwiches, scones and pastries to the fullest, and we all skipped dinner that evening cause we were still full. So we definitely got our money's worth :)

    Dined on 8/13/2014
A great excuse to utilize one of the treasures of Chicago. Tea was enjoyable but lacking value. At $40 per head that is reserved through Open table, I thought we would get more than a cup of tea and three plates of snack sandwiches. While they are very carefully prepared, the profit margin would be extreme. If this tradition is to continue, an improvement of value is needed to entice more customers. With that being said, the service and setting was second to none. Harp playing in background, very attentive staff, and top shelf amenities.

The upper lobby where Tea is served is quite lovely and if you are lucky enough for a table by the fountain even better. But only 2's were there. A wonderful selection of Teas and for a upcharge liquor is available. The harpist starts 1 hour after they open. And only enhanced the experience. A triple plate holds desserts, mini sandwiches, and tea breads with scones. 1 for each person. But if you request more, they bring it. Eventually. The price is steep, but you are going for the experience. My only complaint was the inability of anyone to remove a dirty dish and the bill had to be handed to someone directly as there was not place to put it on the small table.

I have been to tea at the Drake many times over many years and I was surprised to see how small the portions were. The scones were much smaller than in the past and the dessert pastries did not include any real pastries, sweets but not traditional pastries. The clotted cream and preserves and butter were great as always. The sandwiches were just okay and lacked the visual appeal of the traditional style of tea sandwiches. Perhaps my disappointment comes, in part, from the Drake's efforts to "update" afternoon tea and my desire for it to stay the same! I never thought twice about the $40 in the past but this time, i couldn't help thinking that it was a bit expensive.

Tea at the Palm Court at the Drake Hotel in Chicago is an institution. The harpist strums as the Fountain plays. Seasoned waiters bring tasty treats from a prix fix menue and all one needs to worry about ordering is which kind of tea one prefers. It would be the perfect end to a day of museum visits--or shopping, since it is at the end of Michigan Avenue's chic shopping district. Between the arrangement of the tables and the lovely rich upholstery and carpets, one can have a civil conversation and not hear the conversations going on around you. It is more than just a meal, it is an experience to cherish.
