A word from The Palm Court
Tea has been a long tradition at the Drake Hotel. The Palm Court began serving Tea during the holiday season of 1982 and dignitaries the likes of the late Princess of Wales, Princess Diana, Hilary Clinton have sipped and supped here since. In 1958, Queen Elizabeth joined us for tea at the Drake.

The uniqueness of the beauty of the room centers around a gorgeous limestone fountain with a giant urn as its center motif dating 275 years old, this French bronze by designer David Williams. Most importantly, the ambiance of this afternoon affair is greatly enhanced by the live harp music performed Wednesday through Sunday by our musicians dressed in classical evening gown attire.

Diner Reviews
  • "Took my adult daughters for afternoon tea on a recent trip to Chicago. We had come when they were little girls. The atmosphere, the harp music, the bites of wonderful food, and the selection of tea were all excellent. They were having some issues with the powder room on the day we went."

  • "Afternoon tea at the Palm was excellent. My sister and I went together and it was so much fun to get dressed up and take a break from everything. I highly recommend it!"

  • "We had a wonderful time. The surroundings were elegant and the food was excellent. Everyone in our party loved all of the food and the tea choices. It was very nice that we were able to take the left overs home as we enjoyed them the next day. I will be back with my daughters."

  • "The Palm Court is a beautiful setting for High Tea. The pear caramel tea was the best. They even accommodate gluten-free guests."

  • "I heard about high-tea through one of my friends. I was told it was something I should definitely take advantage of living in the city, so I did, and I am very happy I did. Becuase of the price, I figured it would be a good one time kind of activity, but I loved it so much I can see myself returning for another occasion! The whole experience was like no other."

  • "The ambiance of the Palm Court is fantastic; very tastefully done without being overly ostentatious. We came here to celebrate my partner's birthday, and they were very gracious and attentive. They also provided a fantastic birthday cake that was light and rich at the same time -- a rare feat!"

  • "We had a delicious tea in a lovely environment! We would recumbent this to anyone!"

  • "Palm Court for Tea is a tradition in itself. Despite the formal ambience, the service was attentive and friendly, the three-tiered tray of goodies all delicious and the pear-caramel tea a real treat."

  • "Took my niece here for tea a a special treat, choosing the Palm Court because of its status as a Chicago institution. The tea and service were fabulous, but the decor seems to have some dated elements and could use some sensitive restoration."

  • "The atmosphere was wonderful. Very elegant and the harpist added that extra special touch. Well appointed booths and tables surrounded a fountain surrounded by flowers. We arrived a half hour early but we were seated right away. A good selection of teas so there was something for everyone. The finger sandwiches were just ok, but the highlight was the raspberry scones with Devonshire cream and lemon curd. Staff was attentive without being pushy. They request you limit your time to an hour and a half but they continued to fill our teapots until we asked for the check after 2 hours. It was nice to sit and enjoy the harpist, sip our tea and enjoy our company."

  • "Had a wonderful time celebrating my anniversary with my wife in the city that started with high tea at the palm court. Friendly staff, quick service, and they make sure you have a good experience. Highly suggest going when the live harpist is playing as it adds that little bit of class that makes you feel as if you're in a downton abbey episode. Can't wait for my daughter to experience it one day."

  • "Seatings for afternoon tea were until 4:30, and that's when the harpist left. If it's advertised as afternoon tea with a harpist, then they either shouldn't have seatings at 4:30, or else have the harpist until 5:00. I would have rated the Ambience and Overall higher had this been the case. We had a wobbly table, which was fixed shortly after we commented on it. Service and food were excellent, with seconds and refills offered."

  • "Great experience taking my 16 year old daughter to tea as part of her birthday celebration. I wasn't sure how it was going to go at first because when we arrived there was no one at the hostess station to seat us. We waited for over 5 minutes for someone to appear, even though there were waiters on the floor. One of them could have come over and said someone will be right with us but no one did. A line was forming behind us. But after we were seated the service was wonderful. Our waiter was very attentive and another server kept bringing us more hot water for our tea. The tea sandwiches, though typical were very good. The only exception was that the roast beef sandwich contained a little gristle which was carelessly not cut off."

  • "The Drake is the place to have High Tea. The food was outstanding, especially the cranberry scones (with cream and lemon curd). The service was impeccable. It was truly a memorable time. "

  • "The service and ambience were excellent, the finger food was good but to much "bun" and sweets, more savory, less sweet and more bread with no crusts would have been perfect.."

  • "It's a great experience to have high tea at Palm court. It was a nice place with delicious food. Tea was great, and has various choices. I would recommend it to everyone I know."

  • "The Palm Court is an iconic spot in Chicago. Expect great decor and ambience but not food. Afternoon tea is why everyone comes to the Palm Court, the selection of teas are delicious. However, I feel that the food that comes with the $40pp price was a little disappointing but still worth a try. It is a place to go and see once in a lifetime but I probably will not come back for afternoon tea. For the ladies, you must go into the ladies powder room, it is quite beautiful. "

  • "The food and tea were amazing, as usual. However, the place was really busy and the noise level was quite loud. But, it is wedding season and needless to say that is what one would expect. Regardless of how busy it was, we had excellent service and the ambience and the harpist, as usual, were just lovely. Looking around it was clear that everyone was enjoying themselves, just as much as we were."

  • "I enjoyed a wonderful tea with my two daughters thanks to Palm Court. We were there the day after Mother's Day, and the servers are always the most courteous and friendly."

  • "We had a great experience from the booking through the OpenTable and the the seating. After that though, everything was pretty mediocre, with the exception of the tea. The food was too pricy for the quality and presentation. Our server, by the end of our meal, brought containers and left them on the table next to us so we could box our own leftover food. It was very inelegant, especially given the nature of the establishment. I would rather go to the Peninsula (again). You pay a little more, but the food and experience are priceless."

  • "I went to the Palm Court for Mother's Day tea with my mom, sister and niece. They had a rose and a small gift for all the mother's in our group and then seated us very quickly. Our server came by very quickly as well and explained the format (same food for everyone - we just pick the tea we want). The food and tea came very quickly and everything was delicious, especially the sandwiches (cucumber/tomato, lobster roll, steak). They had a very nice "Princess Tea" for my young niece. The flowers were gorgeous and they had a harp player which really added to the elegant ambience. Tea was quite expensive ($40 per adult and $20 per child), but it is a once a year (or less) event and we really enjoyed it."

  • "I brought my mom to The Drake for the second year in a row and this year was even better than last. We sat by the fountain and enjoyed Mother's Day tea and snacks. The ambiance was perfect and we both had a wonderful time. A great Mother's Day activity! "

  • "What a lovely place to come in from the damp, windy weather and enjoy a hot pot of tea and finger foods. We happened to be there during an afternoon when a harpist was playing. Great place to spend an afternoon catching up with a girlfriend."

  • "I took my mother here for afternoon tea as an early mother's day treat. We had an absolutely amazing time. Just from walking in, the setting was tranquil and beautiful, immediately putting us at ease and in a good mood. Our server was fantastic, he made sure we had everything we needed. The food and teas were delicious. We sat for almost two hours without even realizing it. I will definitely be repeating a visit to the Palm Court for afternoon tea and will be recommending it to all my friends. "

  • "The Palm Court at the Drake Hotel lends itself to afternoon tea, the room is lavishly furnished and decorated with a delightful ambience. The food is plentiful, beautifully presented and very professionally served. Not cheap at $40 per person (+ tax + tip) but definitely worth it for that special occasion."
    Dined on 4/23/2014
  • "This was my first visit to The Palm Court, and it was everything I expected. The decor was ethereal, the harpist was wonderful, and it was a quiet and relaxing place to have tea. The tea itself was very tasty; the china was beautiful. The only thing I wasn't wowed by was the food, but after reading other reviews, I knew to expect average fare, and it truly was average. The bland little roast beef sandwiches and soggy cucumber sandwiches both had the texture of being made at least a day before; very ordinary tiny pastries. But all in all, I had a wonderful time thanks to my dining companions and a lot of Champagne."
