A word from The Palm Court
Tea has been a long tradition at the Drake Hotel. The Palm Court began serving Tea during the holiday season of 1982 and dignitaries the likes of the late Princess of Wales, Princess Diana, Hilary Clinton have sipped and supped here since. In 1958, Queen Elizabeth joined us for tea at the Drake.

The uniqueness of the beauty of the room centers around a gorgeous limestone fountain with a giant urn as its center motif dating 275 years old, this French bronze by designer David Williams. Most importantly, the ambiance of this afternoon affair is greatly enhanced by the live harp music performed Wednesday through Sunday by our musicians dressed in classical evening gown attire.

  • "Beautiful spot for Afternoon Tea. Harpist was a wonderful bonus to an elegant setting. The staff can accommodate various dietary needs."

  • "We treated a dear friend to afternoon tea at Palm Court. The service was friendly--we never felt rushed. The harpist was playing and took requests for Happy Birthday. Our waiter was from Bosnia and very friendly. We very much enjoyed our first visit to Palm Court."

  • "Mother/daughter tea. Very nice experience. Beautiful venue. My daughter's vegan, they were very accomodating. The food was delicious! Generous tea service. Yum!!! Yum!!! Yum!!! Must make reservation!!!! Pricey, but worth every penny. on the flip side, we had a 4:30 reservation, we had eaten a light lunch to get ready for this, we enjoyed the tea, sandwiches, scones and pastries to the fullest, and we all skipped dinner that evening cause we were still full. So we definitely got our money's worth :)"

  • "A great excuse to utilize one of the treasures of Chicago. Tea was enjoyable but lacking value. At $40 per head that is reserved through Open table, I thought we would get more than a cup of tea and three plates of snack sandwiches. While they are very carefully prepared, the profit margin would be extreme. If this tradition is to continue, an improvement of value is needed to entice more customers. With that being said, the service and setting was second to none. Harp playing in background, very attentive staff, and top shelf amenities."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Palm Court for High Tea. It was our family's first time, and it was a wonderful experience. My 5 year old felt like a princess! Thank you! We hope to visit again in the future."

  • "Reservations were easily available for a Friday afternoon tea. The restaurant was not very crowded and had a cozy atmosphere. We were seated quickly and our waiter was extremely attentive, taking our order quickly and providing us refills as needed. The teas and food were delicious; my girl friend and I left here very happy campers!"

  • "If you want to make memories and traditions with your family this is the perfect setting. I have taken my daughter to tea time at the drake since she was 5 she is now 9 and every time she has a magical experience. The setting is lovely with a beautiful fountain in the middle and to top it off a harpist that plays beautifully. It will be a tradition in my family for years to come"

  • "The upper lobby where Tea is served is quite lovely and if you are lucky enough for a table by the fountain even better. But only 2's were there. A wonderful selection of Teas and for a upcharge liquor is available. The harpist starts 1 hour after they open. And only enhanced the experience. A triple plate holds desserts, mini sandwiches, and tea breads with scones. 1 for each person. But if you request more, they bring it. Eventually. The price is steep, but you are going for the experience. My only complaint was the inability of anyone to remove a dirty dish and the bill had to be handed to someone directly as there was not place to put it on the small table."

  • "I have been to tea at the Drake many times over many years and I was surprised to see how small the portions were. The scones were much smaller than in the past and the dessert pastries did not include any real pastries, sweets but not traditional pastries. The clotted cream and preserves and butter were great as always. The sandwiches were just okay and lacked the visual appeal of the traditional style of tea sandwiches. Perhaps my disappointment comes, in part, from the Drake's efforts to "update" afternoon tea and my desire for it to stay the same! I never thought twice about the $40 in the past but this time, i couldn't help thinking that it was a bit expensive."

  • "Nothing spectacular but a solid afternoon tea. Ambience is nice with the room, the service and the harp, but beware that you only have an hour and a half before they shuffle you out."

  • "Tea at the Palm Court at the Drake Hotel in Chicago is an institution. The harpist strums as the Fountain plays. Seasoned waiters bring tasty treats from a prix fix menue and all one needs to worry about ordering is which kind of tea one prefers. It would be the perfect end to a day of museum visits--or shopping, since it is at the end of Michigan Avenue's chic shopping district. Between the arrangement of the tables and the lovely rich upholstery and carpets, one can have a civil conversation and not hear the conversations going on around you. It is more than just a meal, it is an experience to cherish."

  • "Took my adult daughters for afternoon tea on a recent trip to Chicago. We had come when they were little girls. The atmosphere, the harp music, the bites of wonderful food, and the selection of tea were all excellent. They were having some issues with the powder room on the day we went."

  • "We had a wonderful time. The surroundings were elegant and the food was excellent. Everyone in our party loved all of the food and the tea choices. It was very nice that we were able to take the left overs home as we enjoyed them the next day. I will be back with my daughters."

  • "The Palm Court is a beautiful setting for High Tea. The pear caramel tea was the best. They even accommodate gluten-free guests."
    Dined on 7/7/2014
  • "I heard about high-tea through one of my friends. I was told it was something I should definitely take advantage of living in the city, so I did, and I am very happy I did. Becuase of the price, I figured it would be a good one time kind of activity, but I loved it so much I can see myself returning for another occasion! The whole experience was like no other."

  • "The ambiance of the Palm Court is fantastic; very tastefully done without being overly ostentatious. We came here to celebrate my partner's birthday, and they were very gracious and attentive. They also provided a fantastic birthday cake that was light and rich at the same time -- a rare feat!"

  • "Palm Court for Tea is a tradition in itself. Despite the formal ambience, the service was attentive and friendly, the three-tiered tray of goodies all delicious and the pear-caramel tea a real treat."

  • "Took my niece here for tea a a special treat, choosing the Palm Court because of its status as a Chicago institution. The tea and service were fabulous, but the decor seems to have some dated elements and could use some sensitive restoration."

  • "The atmosphere was wonderful. Very elegant and the harpist added that extra special touch. Well appointed booths and tables surrounded a fountain surrounded by flowers. We arrived a half hour early but we were seated right away. A good selection of teas so there was something for everyone. The finger sandwiches were just ok, but the highlight was the raspberry scones with Devonshire cream and lemon curd. Staff was attentive without being pushy. They request you limit your time to an hour and a half but they continued to fill our teapots until we asked for the check after 2 hours. It was nice to sit and enjoy the harpist, sip our tea and enjoy our company."

  • "Had a wonderful time celebrating my anniversary with my wife in the city that started with high tea at the palm court. Friendly staff, quick service, and they make sure you have a good experience. Highly suggest going when the live harpist is playing as it adds that little bit of class that makes you feel as if you're in a downton abbey episode. Can't wait for my daughter to experience it one day."
    Dined on 6/27/2014
  • "Seatings for afternoon tea were until 4:30, and that's when the harpist left. If it's advertised as afternoon tea with a harpist, then they either shouldn't have seatings at 4:30, or else have the harpist until 5:00. I would have rated the Ambience and Overall higher had this been the case. We had a wobbly table, which was fixed shortly after we commented on it. Service and food were excellent, with seconds and refills offered."

  • "Great experience taking my 16 year old daughter to tea as part of her birthday celebration. I wasn't sure how it was going to go at first because when we arrived there was no one at the hostess station to seat us. We waited for over 5 minutes for someone to appear, even though there were waiters on the floor. One of them could have come over and said someone will be right with us but no one did. A line was forming behind us. But after we were seated the service was wonderful. Our waiter was very attentive and another server kept bringing us more hot water for our tea. The tea sandwiches, though typical were very good. The only exception was that the roast beef sandwich contained a little gristle which was carelessly not cut off."

  • "The service and ambience were excellent, the finger food was good but to much "bun" and sweets, more savory, less sweet and more bread with no crusts would have been perfect.."

  • "The Palm Court is an iconic spot in Chicago. Expect great decor and ambience but not food. Afternoon tea is why everyone comes to the Palm Court, the selection of teas are delicious. However, I feel that the food that comes with the $40pp price was a little disappointing but still worth a try. It is a place to go and see once in a lifetime but I probably will not come back for afternoon tea. For the ladies, you must go into the ladies powder room, it is quite beautiful. "

  • "The food and tea were amazing, as usual. However, the place was really busy and the noise level was quite loud. But, it is wedding season and needless to say that is what one would expect. Regardless of how busy it was, we had excellent service and the ambience and the harpist, as usual, were just lovely. Looking around it was clear that everyone was enjoying themselves, just as much as we were."
