Diner Reviews
  • "Food was very mediocre and there was no one in the restaurant. Server tried very hard so we'll give her good marks but the food was not special at all."

  • "It's summertime, so enjoy the back patio at this Santa Fe institution. Good entrees, trout and sea bass, and a delicious sautéed shrimp app made for a nice meal. The bar has a separate 'bar menu' and can get raucous, but enjoy the renewed patio and the reasonably priced drinks or win list with your dinner!"

  • "Interesting how the price of one item can affect the overall experience of a restaurant. In this instance it was the beet salad. I nice dinner salad but priced at $ 11.00. Fresh with good flavors but, in my judgment, tremendously overpriced."

  • "We sat in the interior courtyard. It was lovely, secluded and romantic. The tapas were great. We had the squash blossoms stuffed with ricotta, wonderful. The speedini was tender and tasty . The caprese was ordinary too bready. The calamari tender with nice dipping sauce . The highlight was the creme brûlée scented with lavender. Wow it was good. Service was great."

  • "Our waitress was on the rude side. The food was good. The hostess was nice. The bar area was very loud and when we arrived some very rude patrons were leaving and were very obnixious . The restaurant was very dark making it hard to see ."

  • "This has not been my first visit to the Palace. Despite not being able to read the menu nor see all that I was eating due to the ultra-subdued lighting, I would return to dine again without hesitation."

  • "Shrimp in the cocktail were old and mealy, strangely fishy crap cakes, undersized ceasar with chicken, and a buffalo burger that may have been a from a moccasin."

  • "Our server was knowledgeable and efficient. The meal (Atlantic halibut) was delicious"

  • "On 10 Scale - Appetizers were 7; Mojito was 3; Dessert was 6; Coffees were 8."

  • "We enjoyed the tapas. Four tapas per couple was plenty for us and a shared dessert topped it all off."

  • "Went on Valentine's Day. The poor hostess was bussing tables so I assume that the kitchen was also shorthanded. We had good service and the appetizers and salad were good, then we waited and waited and waited for dinner. When it came the pasta was undercooked (not Al Dente, but still starchy) and the sauce overcooked, like it had been held and then reheated in a microwave, the steak and potatoes were also odd the potatoes undercooked and steak overcooked. I knew that there was going to be a band at 10 pm (we had 7:30 reservations) but I didn't think that they should be setting up right next to us while we were eating. Maybe the business needs to decide between being a night spot and fine dining."

  • "Inconsistent is the best description for the food. The barbeque beef sandwich was about 60% fat and 40% beef. Also, the bbq sauce was too sweet. The wait staff was gracious about this and let me order another selection, fish tacos, which were quite good. The dessert was wonderful."

  • "I love a dark restaurant for lunch and the Palace is, but not so dark that you can't see your menu. I go here every time I'm in Santa Fe. Marni generally waits on us, and she is wonderful. The food is very good, lots of options, and the drinks are great. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "Hadn't been to The Palace in Santa February for 30 years! Thought it would be fun even tho we had heard it had "changed " several times. The bar was hopping but we chose to eat in the dining room. The food was very good, the service was excellent, and we had a fun night of nostalgia!"

  • "Winter is not the best time for restaurants in Santa Fe. The Palace is no different. It has the atmosphere of an old bordello with good food. The Cioppino we shared was good. The wine on sale was good too. The service was attentive, but then we were the only people eating in the dining area. We will we return? Probably not, other than to have a snack at the bar which seemed to be quite lively."

  • "My husband and I went there to celebrate our anniversary on Friday night at 6:30. There were only a few other tables full. The staff was very attentive and quick to bring out orders. The drinks were delicious and the food was fabulous. We had the polenta fries, sweet potato soup, mushroom bruschetta, ricotta gnocchi, clams, and brussels sprouts off the ciccheti menu. All were amazing except we were not fond of the brussels sprouts. They were cooked perfectly but the maple syrup was just not balanced out by the rest of the toppings. Maybe that is just a personal preference. Otherwise, everything was amazing and we will definitely be dining there again. If you go later at night they have live music, karaoke and other entertainments."

  • "Marni is often our waitress and she is very good. The food for lunch is always very good. I usually have the BLT and either salad or soup. Didn't get pickles this time, which I missed. The bar makes very good drinks. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "Service was poor. Food was poor. Two of our party sent theirs back. Another wanted to send back but felt it impolite to reject so many meals from one table. Yes, it was New Year's Eve and yes they were busy. That is not an excuse for the quality of the experience offered in dining there. We would not recommend this restaurant."

  • "We live here and had not been to the Palace yet. So when trying to get a reservation apparently they had a cancellation during the busy week of Christmas and we got in. The food was very good and the variety was wonderful. So when in a bind while in Santa Fe try The Palace!"

  • "So glad to see the Palace in business after a period of passing through owners that did not work out in the long-term. While I had heard of it over the years, I never had visited until Thanksgiving day 2013 for their buffet; & our party left completely satisfied. The service from reservation reminder phone call to reception to departure was exceptional, attentive & courteous. All of the food was delicious (as other diners also commented) & well-balanced, & not an item was distasteful or problematic. Although a bit noisy at times in the dining room, ambiance was unique, pleasant & rustically elegant; missing were flowers & real candles on some tables; & hooks present on which to hang tasteful artwork were empty. Price was fair. Recommended."

  • "The Palace Restaurant has had such an historic presence in Santa Fe, that I was afraid it might have lost some of it's charm when it changed hands. Fortunately, it still has that fabulous Victorian elegance (in a bawdy sort of way)! Unfortunately, I had some food restrictions to contend with, but the waiter was extremely accommodating -- offering to make any changes that were necessary to any of the dishes on the menu. I especially enjoyed the fresh tasting slaw that came with my fish tacos, and my sister loved her BLT to which they added guacamole on sourdough bread. Everything on the menu seemed to have something distinctive to set it apart from the ordinary. I will definitely be back to try more after I'm through with my food challenge!"

  • "Service was outstanding! Seems to be popular with the locals. Generous pours on the drinks."

  • "We ordered appetizers/ salads and wine. The waiter recommended a good wine by the glass. So far so good. The appetizers arrived. The tuna was delicious. Three small pieces -- wish there were more. The calamari was okay, but not memorable. The two sauces served with the calamari were both good. The polenta fries had a lovely presentation and were excellent -- again two interesting sauces. The salads were over dressed -- practically swimming in it. Too bad because the combination of flavors and choice of ingredients could have made for two tasty salads. The soup, billed as tomato with basil, tasted like a tomato pasta sauce -- inedible. Nice outdoor patio in the back of the restaurant for summer evening dining. Probably won't go back."

  • "The way the trout was prepared made taking the skin off difficult. I was told to eat the skin; really! I don't think so! Then they made saffron rice with the trout. Yuck! It wasn't worth the price and trouble."

  • "All was very good except the rice was dry and apeared to have been reheated."

  • "One of us remembers dining here years ago and feels the ambience and food have declined a bit. The staff were attentive, friendly, and cooperative with our need to get to a talk. But the food sounded better than it tasted -- e.g., the "curry beef stew" had only the slightest hint of curry taste. And the salmon salad ordered with dressing on the side (because one of us eats only low-fat salad dressing) arrived with dressing applied. (That was corrected pretty quickly.) Definitely a good meal, but not the special, pre-opera treat we were expecting. We may try the Palace again, in case our choice of entrees (influenced by need to avoid long preparation time) was unrepresentative, but can't yet recommend it as a special night-out treat."

  • "The décor is a combination of bordello and 1940's jazz club, with the red wallpaper and banquettes. I have no idea what their concept is. The food was a mixed bag -- a weird clam/vermouth soup that did taste a little like vermouth but was mostly bad tasting. The Caesar salad was worse than ordinary, barely dressed and too full of croutons. The salad came with one anchovy, but for a price, the server nicely accommodated us with more. The apple salad appeared satisfactory to the diner. The trout seemed mediocre. A surprisingly bad experience, except for the excellent service, particularly given the location."

  • "Filet au pivor was to die for! Order the onion rings even if you don't see them on menu. Everything we ordered was wonderful! Our reservation were for 8pm, the place was pretty empty but people started coming in and it turned into a real party place with dance band that had a huge group of fans. Great food and party place!"

  • "We were there for a late lunch. I may have had the best onion rings ever. My wife had the fish tacos. We had the feeling that it was the same fish that would be used on the fish and chips. Good but not great. It looks like it is a dinner place set up for live music. We will try it again then"

  • "My fiance and I wanted to celebrate a few exciting things in our lives with a fancy dinner, and we couldn't have picked a better place. Our waitress was wonderful and entertained all of our naive questions about wine, and everything we had was DELICIOUS. And we had wine, appetizers, entrees, and a dessert, so we sampled quite a bit of their menu. Definitely on the pricy side, but if you wanna spring for a nice meal, this place is well worth it. I would recommend looking over everything on line just to know what you're getting yourself into - and it's a great way to start salivating about your upcoming meal!"

  • "Joseph Wrede isn't executive chef here anymore, and his signature mixing of unexpected flavors is missing. However, the food was VERY good, if more standard than before. We sat in the bar, just for a change of scene, and the bartender was also taking care of us, and she was amazing! Attentive, competent, good with suggestions, excellent with cocktails."

  • "We went here on a Friday night at 7pm and the restaurant was about 1/3 full...but I have no idea why! The food was excellent, as was the service. If you're looking for a restaurant in Santa Fe at the last minute, I'd definitely recommend checking this one out. You won't be disappointed."

  • "Just had a wonderful lunch at the Palace which is a short walk from the Plaza (about a block West). Had a magnificent/killer drink from the bar, and the BLT which came with FRESH salad and a blue cheese dressing with more flavor than ever! Husband had cobb salad with HUGE pieces of blue cheese! Oddly the pickles on the BLT are wonderful! Nice surprise. Will come again for lunch!"

  • "I requested a reservation in the bar area and received an e-mail confirmation. When we arrived the hostess told us they do not take reservations in the bar. When we entered the bar area there was a table for six I believe, with a "Reserved" sign on it. I asked if that was our table and was told it was not. She offered to move two small tables together to accommodate our party of four. But we opted to sit at a table for six or eight. There were flashlights clipped to the menus so that we could read them as its very dark in the bar. The noise level made it difficult to carry on a conversation. I would try to dining room if I ever return as it was quieter. Much confusion re the reservation."
