A word from The Oxford
The hallmark of a gastropub is an adventurous twist on familiar food made from scratch with honest ingredients. We prefer a straightforward bill of fare that leaves room for experimentation. Its as adventurous as you want to be. Fancy or simple, the dishes are all reasonably priced. We serve a menu having a world beat that is unpretentious and equally inviting to regulars and families with strollers in tow. Gastro pubs are not 'see and be seen' venues but more 'come as you are' places. In short, bridging the gap between traditional Pubs and upscale Restaurants. A Cuisine-conscious tavern, specializing in high-quality food a step above basic 'pub grub' Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Hadn't dined here since shortly after grand opening. The food was so many steps above that experience, we will definitely be back soon. BTW, they did Restaurant Week perfectly. Great selections & appropriate size servings."

  • "So from out of town and used open table, really liked the description British "gastro pub" and the food was good. Arrived at 8pm to find a nearly empty resturant. Only one other table had people in it. Was more shocked to find out it was resturant week, and it was still dead. Granted it was a Tuesday night but still slightly concerned. Service was OK we had a training waiter who was pleasant and curious. Our dinner arrived quickly, but they forgot our app. They apologized and brought it to us quickly and told us it was in the house. Everything I would expect, Just dead! Some reviews stated the quality had declined but it was great food and I would return."

  • "We went on a Monday night for Raleigh Restaurant week. The softshell crab app was too fishy for my wife, I found mine a little fishy but not bd, nothing memorable. She had the Shrimp and Grits - again OK but not memorable. I had the Pork Chop which was decent, the potatoes were tasty but a little dry, the sauce was the high point of the meal. Dessert was Grilled Banana Bread Ice Cream Sandwich. The ice cream was 'homemade' maple vanilla - very tasty but also very icy. Our server was very good, when we considered the beer/win pairing he suggested that since Monday is $2 off NC Beer night that we just let him pair beer with our choices, which was a good move. Not a great start to restaurant week but not a complete fail."

  • "Having eaten here several times we decided to meet friends here for dinner early on a Sat. Night. Service was good but the total lack of herbs and seasoning on 3 of the 4 different main dishes we ordered was disappointing. The batter on the 'fish n chips' was thick and undercooked. The risotto with the salmon special was gummy and flavorless. The salmon was a nice piece but for 'grilled' fish it was very greasy. Short ribs were good and so was the shepards pie, but that was under seasoned. Might come back but wouldn't make a point of doing so."

  • "When we were taken to our table (which we had a reservation for) we were seated in the side room. There was our little table for 4 and then a giant table set for 25 or so (we were set no even an arms reach from the middle of the big table). I asked the hostess then if they were expecting a big group soon and she said not for a while. Well before our food even came in comes in a bachelorette party. The ladies were all very nice, but I don't understand why we were set in that room when there were clearly other tables available. The women were very nice but it was constant butts brushing our table as the couple got up and down to greet arriving guests and take pictures. This experience ended up over shadowing the good of our experience."

  • "If you are going to do anything in downtown Raleigh, this is a great location for dinner. The food is very good pub fare plus some more ambitious dishes and the preparation was excellent. The service was quick, but not rushed. I suspect that the chef is good enough that you should just order what entices you and you will be happy. The prices are reasonable and the portions are ample."

  • "The food was amazing, cooked to perfection. My pineapple upsides down martini was amazing, mixed to perfection. And our server Ken was amazing, just perfect!"

  • "We were celebrating our anniversary so this was a great place to start the day. We had excellent service and many of the servers stopped at our table to wish us a happy anniversary. Food was good, but the service was the best part!"

  • "Nice English pub feel. Traditional dishes with subtle twists. Great place for game time"

  • "I'm usually not a buffet type person, but this one wasn't bad. The only thing I can say was that the roasted meat was a little too seasoned. The pulled pork was too sweet and the beef was way over seasoned. If they just use salt and pepper and let the meat be the flavor would be great. But the omelet was great."

  • "Apparently Memorial Day week is pretty dead for restaurants. I was surprised how empty the place was. Food was good and server was attentive, if not very knowledgeable about menu choices. The fried avocado was light and very good."

  • "The location of The Oxford is perfect for performances at the Memorial Hall area. I had Shepherd's Pie and my wife had fish and chips, both good although I thought mine had a bit too much thyme. The menu is very varied with typical British pub food along with more sophisticated food. We intend to eat here regularly before performances at the nearby theaters. "

  • "We love the Oxford. The staff is very knoedgeable. This last visit we had Josh who was great. He knew the menu inside and out. Gave great suggestions that on a whole we took. One of our favorites is the beef Short Ribs with spinach, shoestring onions and blue cheese mashed potatoes. It is a great restaurant if you have show tickets as it is 2 blocks from The theatre. "

  • "The restaurant has excellent, tasty, well-presented entrees such as the salmon croquettes and butternut soup. Our wait person, Joshua, was helpful and recommended items on the menu. He was conscious of our need to attend the symphony on time and made sure that we were able to meet that time. Parking was easy...just across the street, so we were very happy with our girls' night out and our restaurant choice. "

  • "Perfect for a pre-Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts concert meal (and there's a discount with NC Symphony tickets). Creative, nicely seasoned food (a bit pricey). Very limited wine list. TV screens with various sports events unavoidable (if that's a problem for you)."

  • "A bit loud, like a pub should be. Excellent friendly service. Great selection of beers on tap. English pub standard dishes plus fairly complex entrees; Our "small plate" grass-fed filet was smaller than most appetizers (a single 2-3 oz slice of beef). A bit steep prices for the entrees, but the tastes were outstanding. The pub standards were more reasonably priced."

  • "So apparently, Monday night is the only day of the week they do not offer the "other menu special"; therefore the choices were extremely limited. The staff on Monday was extremely limited as well. Our server was AWESOME! He handled our table as well as the huge office party that showed up. I wasn't impressed with my order or my drink. However, I have been to the Oxford on other occasions and have been very pleased with my meal..... I just know never to return on Mondays due to the limited menu."

  • "We were all Wowed! by the.flavors and accommodations. My burger was extremely perfect. The quesadilla was even better. Sometimes you wonder when something tastes so go that it's too good to be true. Not the case here, that's for sure. We can't wait to go back! Loved the whole experience. We sat outside. It just might be the best prepared and freshest tasting food I've had. My burger looked like it belonged in a magazine. Awesome!!!!!!"

  • "We met some friends at the Oxford before going to see the NC Symphony; we chose the restaurant because they are currently offering a 10% discount on food to Symphony ticket holders. Our waiter was very attentive and knowledgeable, almost a bit too chatty. They have a very good beer selection including some local brews, and everyone's meal was excellent. Entree prices mostly range from $10-25, which was higher than I expected for a restaurant with a pub atmosphere, but my entree (the chicken bangers) was from the low end of the price range and was excellent. The Oxford is an easy walk to both the Duke Energy Performing Arts Center and the Red Hat Amphitheater, so is a good location for a pre-concert or play dinner."

  • "The food and beer selection is outstanding. It can get a little loud and rowdy at times but still works for a good date night option."

  • "British pub-like atmosphere, although the restaurant can hardly be called cozy. Good steaks, reasonable prices. Fayetteville St hotspot. Live music , at least on Friday nights."

  • "Having dined at The Oxford for a previous brunch a few months ago, this recent experience was a huge disappointment. The jazz band is gone, the waffle station is gone, the food selections are reduced and were not replenished. Service was great but that is not enough to return for lackluster food."

  • "I have been going to the Oxford for a long time, they are always updating the menu to keep it fresh and always have amazing food. I took my wife there for Valentine's this year and she loved it. The food is wonderful, you can tell the chef puts a lot of thought into the dishes. They always have the classic dishes but keep it fresh with a rotating menu. Our waiter was very helpful explaining the menu."

  • "The food was a miss for me this time. My boyfriend enjoyed his though. I had gotten the ginnoch with spinach and rabbit sausage. None of it went together and the rabbit wasn't even cooked with the rest of it. Last time I went we both had amazing dishes."

  • "Brunch starts about 10:30, and the place wasn't busy until a little past noon. Great, friendly service from wait staff and carving station/omelet station personnel. Food was fresh, and portion sizes were appropriate (for example, biscuits were refreshingly small so you didn't need to fill your plate in order to do a biscuit and gravy). Prices very reasonable. Try the barbecue - it's incredible!"

  • "I found this "gastropub" a little out of sorts. I walked in and felt like this must have once been a night club, since retrofitted into a restaurant. Space was strange and confused, with over-loud ambiance and decor. Service was not the best I've had for the price points on the menu, but the food was very good. I would return if the space had a make-over!"

  • "The dining scene in downtown Raleigh keeps getting better and The Oxford is one of the very good restaurants downtown. The service was just right and so was the food. Billed as a British gastropub! I expected the usual pub fare but was pleasantly surprised to find it was more than that. I would recommend to my friends and go there again."

  • "A friend and I tried this place for lunch the Friday after Christmas. The restaurant was very quiet throughout lunch (11:30 to 1:30). You could easily have a conversation without yelling; the hostess was very friendly and promptly seated us. The waiter was top notch. He knew the food and could offer meaningful recommendations. We followed his instruction and ordered two of his favorites (the BBQ Short Rib Sandwich on Brioche and the ABC (i.e., BLT w/ Granny Smith) with a side of the Tomato Stilton Bisque. Absolutely delicious. We hardly left anything on the plate. The food was fresh and bright. Very good. We will definitely be going back for lunch, again!"

  • "Calvin was our server and he was great! He was there when we needed something and made great recommendations. Our table location wasn't great - we were in the corner and the next table was just a few feet away. We had to listen to loud, annoying people at the next table - not the fault of The Oxford, of course."
