My favorite restaurant in Washington. The best food in DC - absolutely amazing. As a vegetarian it is a pleasure to have options on the regular menu that are every bit as thought out and refined as the rest of the menu. Ed, our usual server, is charming and delightful. I regularly recommend The Oval Room to all of my friends.

It was a very good dining experience. The service was great and the food was delicious. Wine was good too, and then we got to walk past the White House afterwards. I would definitely go back again and recommend it to my friends.

This was a fancy, high end, sort of high dollar restaurant that served this special occasion well. The food and service was excellent. We ate outside since the weather was warm and breezy. My niece visited me from Colorado and she enjoyed the location since she loves politics! Afterward, we took a stroll to the White House and around Lafayette Square.

They started us off with a two part amuse bouche: a mixture of pureed beets, cilantro and seaweed over which a sea urchin reduction was poured (not so high on that since I’m not a beet fan) and a shot of potato soup with cheese (much better). I had a sauteed shrimp appetizer with rhubarb and olive powder (interesting combination that worked well) while my wife had a crab salad where the crab was pressed into a slab and served with blood orange pieces and some blood orange sorbet (salty but good). I ordered a honeydew martini and our entrees arrived: a pork tenderloin with smoky potato, broccoli rabe and ancho chili sauce for her, and roasted chicken with pumpkin risotto and egg for me (both scrumptious). The coconut cream tart was good.

I was impressed by the ambiance but disappointed with the service as well as food. There was only one unappealing choice of beef, so all at our table had different types of fish, each of which was undercooked and without flavor. The (side-ordered) potatoes seemed like they had been sitting for a while and re-heated for our table. We frequently had to wait to draw attention from the serving staff.

I was pleased we were seated immediately on arrival. The last time I was there (not through Open Table), we were told our table was not ready and to have a drink at the bar. Throughout the evening, although there were plenty of fempty tables, guests all came in with drinks in their hands, suggesting to me they were deliberately delayed in order to get them to order drinks. The food is good and the service is good and not obtrusive; I chose the restaurant because it is one of the few that is not too noisy. One can usually hear one's dining companions, something all too rare in Washington now.

Memorable meal because of venue, food, and companionship. We reached our tables at about 7:10pm, and only one or two other inside tables had guests. Still took our very friendly waiter many (8 - 10?) minutes to greet us and than a long time to return. Fortunately, we were not in a 'hurry.' I believe he was serving outside tables also. Menu very interesting, and presentation of meals wonderful to behold as we each ordered something different. Recommend for those in search of a memorable meal.

the wait staff could be more attentive to the basics. for instance, our table had to ask for water 4-5 times. and we were sent to the bar to wait for our table, but there was no bar tender. eventually, the hostess stepped behind the bar to help, but she was clearly struggling in that roll. We had a wonderful night of al fresco dining (only outdoors has moderate noise). The service was attentive, but never imposing. They were helpful but not pushy with choice of wine from their extensive wine list. The explanations of the dishes as we got them was detailed but not overwhelming. The gnocchi were the best we have had outside of Italy. The duck was done to a turn. The vacherin of orange sorbet and fennel ice cream was an explosive delight to finish the evening.

Also, the menu was very inviting and our entrees were excellent--the waiter gave great explanations about how the food was prepared and special ingredients. The coffee was also an excellent house blend. Further, our waiter handled our valet parking ticket ensuring that the car was available when we departed. I will definately return to this restaurant.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2005VIP
    Dined on 4/4/2008
I decided to try The Oval Room on a recommendation. I chose the tasting menu with wine pairings. Of the seven courses, two were enjoyable, but the remainder fell flat or failed. The chef's attempts to play with flavors did not succeed for the most part, seeming to experiment for the sake of doing so -- for instance, using licorice with striped bass. Many flavors that should have been complementary were too strong and overpowered the main ingredient. Despite getting the wine pairings, I did not interact with the sommelier at all, being brought my glass by my server. My server, who was new, was attentive and knowledgeable of the courses. However, at the end of the night, the staff seemed to disappear, forcing me to get my jacket myself.

I have been dining at the Oval Room on and off for many years but lately it has become one of my favorite restaurants. The food is invariably excellent and the service superior without being obsequious. Given that more often than not I dine there for lunch, I have not had an opportunity to explore the wine list, although I expect it is also excellent. The Oval Room is one of very few restaurants in the area with an excellent outdoor area which makes for pleasurable early evening dining in the summer months.

Food is outstanding. Location is outstanding - across from the White House. Not kid friendly. Brought my 5 year old and no accomadations could be made regarding food choices. Charlie Palmer's has mini-hamburgers (not on the menu), DC Coast, Butterfield 9 have done a crab cake or simple fish dish. Bombay Club across the street did a simple tandori dish. I understand most people would not bring young children but on special occasions (Easter, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day), better accomadations could be provided. Price was not a factor in this response.

The Foie Gras Dumplings were succulent and tempting. Juiciest Pork I ever had and the Duck was moist with great crispy searing. Dessert were light and refreshingly tasty, especially blood orange sorbet with fennel cookie and charred pineapple. Flavors were divine. Portions are reasonable, service is immaculate with great attention to detail, patience and eagerness to help us journey through dining experience.
