Diner Reviews
  • "A creative menu brings lots of powerful surprises that really work like the savory granola on the fabulous foie gras terrine. Most dishes very good - the pasta, the homemade burrata, the lamb although saucing on the duck dish a bit too acidic. Reserved ambience befits the location. Great for business dinner or romantic dinner"

  • "The menu was not expansive. Prices were too high and the atmosphere was stuffy. It was also freezing inside! For the price, you can go to better restaurants in the same neighborhood"

  • "Food and service was wonderful. Sat inside. Outdoor seating was not appealing during the day, too much traffic"

  • "I had burrata as an appetizer. It was excellent, though not the best I've ever had. I had pappardelle with lamb sausage and eggplant. It was exquisitely prepared. Service is very attentive but largely invisible."

  • "I realize salads aren't among a restaurant's priorities, but the Oval Room could make just a little effort with an entree salad. The Oriental chicken salad had a portion is over-cooked chicken breast, fried wontons, and a lot of greens. There was exactly one mandarin orange and about 1/20th of an avocado. I'm used to far better with the other restaurants run by the same owner."

  • "I took the wife here for our anniversary. I heard good things about the food and I was happy it met my expectations. The staff was pleasant and surprised us with a personalized dessert. The meal was great. I would recommend and will return when I can."

  • "Spent some time reviewing restaurants for a special ending for a short trip to D.C. We were not disappointed - turned out to be a great evening. The entire staff was very friendly yet with the requisite amount of class. Ended the evening with a short walk to view the White House at night."

  • "Oval Room is a very pretty place with food that lives up to the setting. I began with a vodka martini--just a regular one-- and I don't know what they did to it, but it was the tastiest I've had. Our appetizers-tuna sashimi and a shrimp dish--were both tasty. I loved the veal medallions and was fascinated by the coconut grits. Now THAT is inventive, and I don't even like grits. My husband said his pork chop was really tough but flavorable. Our waitress was obviously skilled. I would definitely return."

  • "Second time around we found the Oval Table still delightful. Outstanding flavors, appealing combinations and reasonable portions. It was more noisy this time but conversation was still possible and one did not hear the conversations of other diners."

  • "We were hoping for a nice fancy dinner with our kids as a special treat while visiting DC. We started looking at the menu and couldn't even find anything we liked! When we ordered and asked for some substitutions they were very unaccomodating. The waiter was very stuffy and not helpful. In general this is only a place for foodies without kids!!"

  • "Whether for just my wife and I, with friends or for our recent visit bringing our very best out - of - town friends, The Oval Room has never disappointed us. Every dining experience has always been fantastic and special."

  • "I was very disappointed in the quality of the food at the Oval Room. I ordered the "oven roasted turkey club" for lunch recently. The bread was ciabatta which, to compensate for its dryness, had more mayonnaise than turkey. To add insult to injury, the turkey was not what i had imagined as "oven roasted" but one slice of thin, tasteless deli turkey covered up by lettuce, a little avocado and greasy bacon. I removed the bread and ate what little remained inside; not my idea of a satisfying "club" sandwich."

  • "From the moment I walked in I felt like I had suddenly become famous. The host opened the door with a gracious greeting, another person took my coat and yet another person led me to my table pulled out my chair -- it was all very well coordinated. I never once had to ask for my glass to be refilled because just as I was thinking that I might want a refill, my glass was already being refreshed. My salad was quite good...and my guests enjoyed their selections as well. I will definitely return."

  • "This is the second time my husband and I have dined at the Oval Room- both times we were wowed by the tasing menu. The service is outstanding and the ambiance is wonderful. One in our party said this was the best meal she'd ever had. Outstanding."

  • "Service was friendly but the dishes took forever tone served, and the restaurant doesn't know how to serve wine."

  • "I was having dinner with an old friend and asked for a quiet, private table, which I was given. We took a long time catching up over a drink before ordering and the waiters were great at checking in, but not hurrying us. I usually eat here for lunch, but dinner was wonderful. I ordered the soup to start and he had the tuna sashimi. We followed that with duck for me and salmon for him. The soup is always good, and the duck was delicious in an unusual preparation. The waiter decanted the wine. We spent four hours dining and had a delicious and unhurried experience. I work in the area and the Oval Room is one of my favorite restaurants, but I would go out of my way to dine here."

  • "Party of 4.1 was served raw pork chop. Others ate while pork was cooked. Other entrees-one was very good, others fair. Overpriced for the experience."

  • "A friend and I decided to try the tasting menu, either 7 or 8 courses paired with wine, and the number of courses determined by whether or not you choose the lobster. We didn't, and didn't regret it. That course is an additional $20 and really not necessary. The food was outstanding, and 3 of the 7 wines were expertly paired to complement the flavors. Those 3 courses, unfortunately, were the first 2 and the 4th. The others were mildly disappointing. In order to have a great pairing, the wine has to be good on its own, as well as matching the food. The other wines were adequate, but didn't measure up to the quality of the food, which was outstanding. The first wine, a Muscadet, was wonderful. All in all, I'd return in a heartbeat."

  • "Lovely President's Day lunch at a table by the window. We always love the salad at The Oval Room and as usual, the entrees were interesting and delicious. For perfectly cooked fish, this is a favorite location. And the shared dessert was delightful and very clever. How does anyone make such tiny cookies to accent a beautiful plate? Terrific service!"

  • "Made a last minute reservation for the Oval Room because it was close to my mine and my wife's place of work. I read that politicians and local celebrities dined here, especially at lunch time. The atmosphere is nice, the service good, but the food is not worth the price paid in our opinions. We MIGHT eat lunch here someday, but it won't be at the top of our list given the numerous other good lower price choices."

  • "Booked a last min reservation here in celebration of Valentine's day w. my bf. We ordered their preset 3 course Vday meal paired with wine by the glass for each meal. Food was excellent (my entree: sea bream, carrots, crab dumpling, broth of carrots, green chili, uni butter) and needless to say, it was very well executed: the fish was cooked to perfection (any restaurant that could execute fish the way The Oval Room did is a winner in my book). Service was as good as the food, and we had no complaints. The restaurant setting is by far one of the most intimate, which also added to our satisfaction. Highly recommended, though it is a bit on the pricier side! Ps. The honey lavender panna cotta w. strawberry elderflower sorbet was to die for!"

  • "The food here is stellar. My colleague and I had burrata as an appetizer. It's served with winter vegetables sliced incredibly thin. I had agnolotti stuffed with mushrooms and served in a brown butter sauce; it was terrific. My colleague had strozapetti, about which she raved. My chocolate torte dessert was fabulous- light but flavorful. Service was extremely attentive. Highly recommended."

  • "The meal was among the best I have experienced, innovative and beautiful. Hats off to the chef and applause for best service. Oval Room is well worth going out of your way for a perfect meal. The black truffled pasta appetizer was heavenly."

  • "Excellent service. Well conceived offerings with a diverse selection. The two of us enjoyed excellent soup and truffle pasta starters and salmon and duck (not to be missed) entres. When we wanted a lighter dessert we were offered a pleasing sorbet. Excellent, attentive but not overbearing service. Great place to have a serious conversation without having to shout or strain to hear. Will be back."

  • "My sister and I dined for Restaurant Week, we were not disappointed... The Salmon was made to perfection and the Pork dish was divine, I even loved the brussel sprouts. The service was great, and the atmosphere was warm and cozy, I will definitely be back again."

  • "This is a perfect special occasion spot. We very rarely find a place where we feel like both the food and the service are exceptional. Our server timed everything perfectly and was polite and responsive yet unobtrusive. The salmon was excellent. We were disappointed that the desserts on the three-course menu were not available a la carte; we asked for the cheesecake and my feeling is if they have it in the kitchen they should have come up with an a la carte price and given it to us. There may be a good reason for this policy though, so we weren't too bothered. Other than that everything was perfect."

  • "My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful dinner last night at The Oval Room. The food was outstanding, the service fantastic, and the timing perfect."

  • "The Oval Room is more than very good, if the max. rating is 4 , it deserves a 3.5. The imagination of the chef (kitchen) is outstanding; the food is presented creatively; It's very much a treat to guess how one' s order will be prepared and presented.Even the chocolate mousse does not come as a tasty puddle. It's a great bonus to be able to have a quiet conversation. My miniscule criticism is the vegetable done-ness. My clever brussel sprouts slice, for example, could have been slightly softer, ditto the pleasing beet appetizer."

  • "My wife and I went to the Oval Room during Restaurant Week, and unlike some restaurants who participate in the offering, the Oval Room put out some fantastic dishes to try. We each had different courses and shared - I had the duck confit "tots", scallops, and apple crumb cheesecake (you'll have to look at the menu to see what they are really called!). My wife had the shrimp, steak, and carrot cake. The only complaint was from my wife, who would've preferred my dessert to her own. The decor was outstanding-though muted and calming, as far as colors go, it was comfortable and luxurious. The wait-staff was terrific also, if not just a tad bit stiff - still, very knowledgable and helpful/attentive."

  • "The food was really great, but the portion sizes were small"

  • "The starter of cheese and beets was wonderful. The two main courses were a flat iron steak and a pork chop. Both were tough, with one of the chops being under in the middle and burnt on the outside. The two desserts were a cheesecake and a chocolate tort. The cheesecake was more akin to a cheesecake pudding and not good, let alone misleading. And I can't say this without being harsh so I'll just say it: the chocolate tort reminded me of being a kid and eating a black forest cake sitting out at a golden corral. It was bad. Out of six courses, only two were eaten. It wasn't a great atmosphere either. This was supposed to be a really nice date. Thank God for the company, because the meal was awful."

  • "Had a group of 6 of us and thankfully we didn't have early seating. We started dining at 8:30 and all of us would have really enjoyed doing all 3 courses again. The food really was that good. Between us we covered over 80% of the menu and no one was unsatisfied with their courses or meal. Excellent service."

  • "This place is very classy! The staff is great, outstanding service. The food is also great, the portions look small, but you won't leave disappointed. I would go to this place over and over."

  • "Intimate, elegant and deee-lish! We had lost track of the marvelous Oval Room for DINNER!! Yes--around for years! steady for those "power lunches." Maybe her uber-popularity sent us to the several equally superb sister restaurants? Returning was superb dining. Every course was pure Freshness, expertly prepared, plated and presented. The culinary skills produced divine flavors! Go -- make your reservations & GO!"

  • "Standards were lowered for Restaurant week. My food was not hot, and pork loin was under seasoned. Service was rushed and we where hurried out of the Restaurant. Our server bought out our bill with our deserts still on the table and a half of bottle of wine left. I understand the need to turn tables but our dinning experience was less that 40 mins. My app was taken away while I was still "enjoying" the food."
