Diner Reviews
  • "The service here is fantastic and the room is quiet and discreet but both the Cobb salad and the chicken salad are very odd. The ingredients aren't chopped up and melded together -- they just lie there separately on the plate, not properly coated with the dressing. It's like the chef quit halfway through making them, and the diner has to finish the job."

  • "This is the second time I ate at this restaurant and it never fails to amaze me. The food is excellent, service is impecable and would come back time and again. I always recommend it to friends and colleagues in the office."

  • "we had a great late afternoon/early dinner outdoor dining experience...food and service was terrific"

  • "I have been here many times for lunch and am pleased every time. The food is always inspired and new things are on the menu all the time. You should ask for descriptions of things because they are often not quite what you think they'll be. For example, they have a burrata with jalepeno dressing and pear that frankly, sounds kind of weird, but it is delicate and delicious. The space is also super quiet and soothing. I value that when I need a real break at lunch and I want to actually talk to my lunch date. This is my go to place for a middle of the day recharge."

  • "Had a Saturday night dinner at Oval Room. Room beautiful (restrooms clean but could use upgrade). Food and wine outstanding. Service was great. Overall great evening. Pasta appetizer shared was wonderful but small for sharing. Rack of Lamb and Poached lobster mains were terrific. Fabulous Gruner Veltliner wine. Nice rhubard dessert."

  • "We bring our guests, special friends and just the two of us for an excellent experience, always consistent menu and service, and a wonderful evening out. We will be back when your refurbishing is done. thanks for always a good time."

  • "We started out with a server that was giving us pretty bad service and we made a small mention to the manager. The next thing we knew, we had a new server, with a great attitude and great service, and even sent out desserts on the house. They went above and beyond to fix the issue and it was much appreciated. Not to mention, that all of the food was delicious!"

  • "Menu was ambitious and executed moderately well. Not enough value for the price both in quality and quantity. Service was excellent. They were very willing to explain everything on the menu but they appeared pretentious if you wanted to order a non-wine beverage. I dropped the car off to valet and when I received my car back the front left tire was flat. The valet service company is different than the restaurant, but the restaurant helped out. The valet service brought a service vehicle to pump air into my tire. So far, 36 hours later, all is well. I'm positive the valet guy messed up my tire but at least they fixed it for now."

  • "Oval Room's $39 prix fixe early evening dinner is a fabulous bargain. Great food in a quiet, comfortable environment, inside or out. "

  • "What a nice surprise to find a delicious pre-theater menu that offered some delicious options in a sophisticated environment. Service was great and staff very welcoming. The regular menu looked great also. "

  • "This is my main "go to" restaurant for dining near the White House. Excellent food at reasonable prices. Also, great service."

  • "I picked The Oval Room because it was on Open Table's "quiet" list -- my 91 year old Dad is very hard of hearing, especially in ambient noise. We had a perfect table. The seasonal menu was delightful. Dad had two appetizers for dinner. I had superbly cooked fish. They made his martini to perfection -- and he is VERY picky about his martini. We had an unhurried lovely meal with attentive, almost European style service. I will be back."

  • "Had Mother's Day lunch at the Oval Room. Overall, it was a good experience. They could have done a few things differently for improvement: (1) shifted the umbrella at this outside table to provide more shade; (2) more moisture in the tres leches cake; (3) find a different mix of flavors for the carrot cake with chocolate and ginger; (4) provide description of sea bream entre"

  • "Awesome food experience for my anniversary! Last minute booking available. I cant believe how great the food was and I could still book a table for dinner one or two days in advance instead of months in advance like Risika. We did the 7 course tasting menu; the food and wine pairing was outstanding. A true gem and hidden secret in DC-a foodies delight for dinner or lunch. Awesome! Mums the word...we are going make this our monthly foodie retreat and we don't want the crowds to follow."

  • "The Oval Room consistently delivers excellent food in a tasteful, elegant environment with attentive service. I like the restaurant for business lunches as it is not too noisy, and its understated excellence sets the right tone."

  • "Came here for lunch with a business associate. I had the Oval Room Cobb; he had the steak sandwich. Both were excellent. We sat outside and soaked up the great weather. Service was excellent. I'll be back."

  • "A creative menu brings lots of powerful surprises that really work like the savory granola on the fabulous foie gras terrine. Most dishes very good - the pasta, the homemade burrata, the lamb although saucing on the duck dish a bit too acidic. Reserved ambience befits the location. Great for business dinner or romantic dinner"

  • "The menu was not expansive. Prices were too high and the atmosphere was stuffy. It was also freezing inside! For the price, you can go to better restaurants in the same neighborhood"

  • "Food and service was wonderful. Sat inside. Outdoor seating was not appealing during the day, too much traffic"

  • "I had burrata as an appetizer. It was excellent, though not the best I've ever had. I had pappardelle with lamb sausage and eggplant. It was exquisitely prepared. Service is very attentive but largely invisible."

  • "I realize salads aren't among a restaurant's priorities, but the Oval Room could make just a little effort with an entree salad. The Oriental chicken salad had a portion is over-cooked chicken breast, fried wontons, and a lot of greens. There was exactly one mandarin orange and about 1/20th of an avocado. I'm used to far better with the other restaurants run by the same owner."

  • "Spent some time reviewing restaurants for a special ending for a short trip to D.C. We were not disappointed - turned out to be a great evening. The entire staff was very friendly yet with the requisite amount of class. Ended the evening with a short walk to view the White House at night."

  • "Second time around we found the Oval Table still delightful. Outstanding flavors, appealing combinations and reasonable portions. It was more noisy this time but conversation was still possible and one did not hear the conversations of other diners."

  • "Oval Room is a very pretty place with food that lives up to the setting. I began with a vodka martini--just a regular one-- and I don't know what they did to it, but it was the tastiest I've had. Our appetizers-tuna sashimi and a shrimp dish--were both tasty. I loved the veal medallions and was fascinated by the coconut grits. Now THAT is inventive, and I don't even like grits. My husband said his pork chop was really tough but flavorable. Our waitress was obviously skilled. I would definitely return."

  • "We were hoping for a nice fancy dinner with our kids as a special treat while visiting DC. We started looking at the menu and couldn't even find anything we liked! When we ordered and asked for some substitutions they were very unaccomodating. The waiter was very stuffy and not helpful. In general this is only a place for foodies without kids!!"

  • "Whether for just my wife and I, with friends or for our recent visit bringing our very best out - of - town friends, The Oval Room has never disappointed us. Every dining experience has always been fantastic and special."

  • "I was very disappointed in the quality of the food at the Oval Room. I ordered the "oven roasted turkey club" for lunch recently. The bread was ciabatta which, to compensate for its dryness, had more mayonnaise than turkey. To add insult to injury, the turkey was not what i had imagined as "oven roasted" but one slice of thin, tasteless deli turkey covered up by lettuce, a little avocado and greasy bacon. I removed the bread and ate what little remained inside; not my idea of a satisfying "club" sandwich."

  • "From the moment I walked in I felt like I had suddenly become famous. The host opened the door with a gracious greeting, another person took my coat and yet another person led me to my table pulled out my chair -- it was all very well coordinated. I never once had to ask for my glass to be refilled because just as I was thinking that I might want a refill, my glass was already being refreshed. My salad was quite good...and my guests enjoyed their selections as well. I will definitely return."

  • "This is the second time my husband and I have dined at the Oval Room- both times we were wowed by the tasing menu. The service is outstanding and the ambiance is wonderful. One in our party said this was the best meal she'd ever had. Outstanding."

  • "Service was friendly but the dishes took forever tone served, and the restaurant doesn't know how to serve wine."

  • "I was having dinner with an old friend and asked for a quiet, private table, which I was given. We took a long time catching up over a drink before ordering and the waiters were great at checking in, but not hurrying us. I usually eat here for lunch, but dinner was wonderful. I ordered the soup to start and he had the tuna sashimi. We followed that with duck for me and salmon for him. The soup is always good, and the duck was delicious in an unusual preparation. The waiter decanted the wine. We spent four hours dining and had a delicious and unhurried experience. I work in the area and the Oval Room is one of my favorite restaurants, but I would go out of my way to dine here."

  • "A friend and I decided to try the tasting menu, either 7 or 8 courses paired with wine, and the number of courses determined by whether or not you choose the lobster. We didn't, and didn't regret it. That course is an additional $20 and really not necessary. The food was outstanding, and 3 of the 7 wines were expertly paired to complement the flavors. Those 3 courses, unfortunately, were the first 2 and the 4th. The others were mildly disappointing. In order to have a great pairing, the wine has to be good on its own, as well as matching the food. The other wines were adequate, but didn't measure up to the quality of the food, which was outstanding. The first wine, a Muscadet, was wonderful. All in all, I'd return in a heartbeat."
