A word from The Original
Inspired by diners the 1960s, The Original, Portland's downtown destination for all-day dining, serves up playful variations on classic menu standards.

Made from ingredients seasonal and local, and prepared with classic French techniques, our menu of eclectic American cuisine takes on regional favorites and modifies them with flavors and textures unique to the Pacific Northwest.

Traditional dishes like Chicken Fried Steak and Beef Stroganoff are reimagined, resulting in contemporary meals that are as enjoyable to contemplate as they are gratifying to taste.

In an atmosphere that's stylish, sophisticated, and cool, The Original honors the past as it listens in on the pulse of Portland's evolving tastes.

I like coming here: the food is OK and I like the interior of the place. The service is variable. For example the last two times our waiter(tress) was kind of slow and forgetful, but the lady at the reception was very capable and proactive. It is a noisy place but it somehow suits the place and I don't find it disruptive. In general this is a really good place to have lunch and to take friends who are visiting from out of town.

We made reservations on opentable and when we checked in were told it would be a while for our table to be ready. We then watched 3 separate groups walk in without reservations and be seated immediately. What's the point of reserving a table if someone can walk in and be seated before you? Our server rushed us and was not attentive. The French toast was amazing but the side of bacon not good. It was way over cooked and seemed like it was reheated rather than freshly made which is super disappointing.

This was my first time to the Orginial and I absolutely fell in love. The menu is classic diner but exotically different. I had the chicken and waffles which had a savory rosemary syrup. The waffle was light and fluffy, and then chicken was not greasy or slimy. I actually added a little regular syrup as well (I'm not a huge rosemary fan) to add an extra touch of sweetness to the savory. My husband had the shepherd's pie which was amazing. I had a few bites and it had amazing flavor. I definitely want to go back soon!

The Original was the first place I hit on my Portland trip and it didn't disappoint. They have a great brunch with many choices. Personally, I love a traditional two egg breakfast with hashbrowns and bacon - The Original did it well. I would head back next time I am in the area. I was hungry so I played it safe, but their menu has many interesting items. Make sure you try their house made marionberry jam - it's so good.

If you are in the nighborhood and you're craving a delicious breakfast, this is the place to stop! Their hashbrowns, bacon, panckakes, and five dollar mimosas were very good @ a reasonable price. They offer breakfast all day which is very convenient for those who like to sleep-in late.

In Portland for the weekend with husband and son and looked online for brunch reviews. The Original did not disappoint. Staff was really friendly and service was great overall. We all had the eggs benny. Cooked perfect. Great hollandaise (maybe even better than mine) and loved the crispy hash brown squares. Great spot for brunch....we will go back next time we're in Portland.

it's not here. Food is classic, but outstanding, diner food. It would be fine for breakfast and lunch, but we went for our last dinner in Portland which was a mistake with so many good, romantic, scenic restaurants in town. My husband had a very good hamburger and I had the seafood gumbo. Both very good. Some outstanding cocktails, but wine list average. Stick to lunch and you'll be delighted.

I started going to The Original shortly after it opened. I liked the menu and the attitude. Years later I am still going there for all the same reasons: the food, the drinks, the laid-back attitude. On this particular occasion I was having happy hour with a friend and his daughter. Partway through the meal the server came to us and said that we should save too, because since I was such a good repeat customer the restaurant was going to comp our desserts! I was really touched by the gesture and needless to say we all enjoyed our desserts.

    Dined on 4/19/2014
We had reservations, but still had to wait about 10 minutes for a table. Not too bad. At least we weren't just wandering in off the street. That would have taken at least 30 minutes. The food was traditional diner with a modern twist. The brioche French Toast had a custard like texture and a sweetness that nearly needed no syrup. They were quite quick to fill your coffee and very attentive, But didn't come back to see if we needed anything until we were finished. Over all, a decent job on the service. The atmosphere is like a diner from the Jetson's; a bit future modern, a bit old fashioned. But the acoustics are like an indoor pool making it OK for a couple to speak but a bit difficult if you have more than four people.

A group of 8 of us came to Portland for a girls weekend and we were staying at the Marriott where The Original was located, mostly for convenience to downtown areas and The Original, which seemed like a great way to start the night with some dinner and cocktails. Our server (didn't catch his name but he has shoulder length hair) was HILARIOUS and so nice, treated us great and recommended delicious drinks and food. Even dealt with our crazy crowd and took pictures for us. It was a great place and I'd recommend it for sure again!

This was a quick in and out brunch spot with hot coffee and spicy bloody marys. The mushroom and swiss omelet was great, stuffed full and the mushrooms were a nice mix of varieties, which is a welcome change over simple button mushrooms. The potatoes are shredded which is not always the easiest to find in Portland so that was appreciated. A side of bacon was generous and properly cooked. One friend had a side of fruit which was generous in portion and another the NW logger which was enough food for a logger, truly.

Looked for a spot to take the kids before going to a show downtown. The Original was a great find for early dinner, especially because it was still Happy Hour. I had been here once before and was very impressed by their cocktails made with in house syrups. This time I was less impressed by the drinks, though still good there didn't seem to be that many unique ones on the menu. Dinner was over all pretty good. My lamb came out a little cold but was cooked perfectly and paired really well with its side dished. My boyfriend enjoyed his meal as well. We really like the chicken waffle sliders. They were the perfect size for the type of food they were and tasted great. Since the waffles were so good and our hotel was so close we went back for breakfast the next morning. Breakfast was very good, the sausage and bacon were moist and the poached eggs were cooked perfectly. Would go again.
