A word from The Original
Inspired by diners the 1960s, The Original, Portland's downtown destination for all-day dining, serves up playful variations on classic menu standards.

Made from ingredients seasonal and local, and prepared with classic French techniques, our menu of eclectic American cuisine takes on regional favorites and modifies them with flavors and textures unique to the Pacific Northwest.

Traditional dishes like Chicken Fried Steak and Beef Stroganoff are reimagined, resulting in contemporary meals that are as enjoyable to contemplate as they are gratifying to taste.

In an atmosphere that's stylish, sophisticated, and cool, The Original honors the past as it listens in on the pulse of Portland's evolving tastes.

Diner Reviews
  • "it's not here. Food is classic, but outstanding, diner food. It would be fine for breakfast and lunch, but we went for our last dinner in Portland which was a mistake with so many good, romantic, scenic restaurants in town. My husband had a very good hamburger and I had the seafood gumbo. Both very good. Some outstanding cocktails, but wine list average. Stick to lunch and you'll be delighted."

  • "I started going to The Original shortly after it opened. I liked the menu and the attitude. Years later I am still going there for all the same reasons: the food, the drinks, the laid-back attitude. On this particular occasion I was having happy hour with a friend and his daughter. Partway through the meal the server came to us and said that we should save too, because since I was such a good repeat customer the restaurant was going to comp our desserts! I was really touched by the gesture and needless to say we all enjoyed our desserts."

  • "Lots of over the top reviews...we travel a good bit and brunch is our mainstay meal. It was ok. It's a diner and it met those expectations. Not outstanding ....not bad...just a diner.,."

  • "Sharing dinner with someone special didn't have to mean white linens and stuffy digs. We had delicious food, yummy cocktails, an incredibly delectable tiramisu in a stylish but welcoming booth that was perfect. Thank you to Logan, our Rockstar server who made the night fun and memorable."

  • "We both had the eggs & hash browns dish. The eggs were properly cooked, and I ordered the fried chicken. That is a great way to have fried chicken!"
    Dined on 6/18/2014
  • "Food was delicious! We both had the biscuit sandwich...a large homemade biscuit, scrambled or fried egg, pork belly, and tomatoe. We topped it with the Aardvark Habanero sauce at the table...unbelievable! I'll be back many more times!"

  • "The food her is amazing. Just the scrambled eggs alone blew my mind. Everything is madde from scratch and the quality shows. Bravo! We routinely drive down from Oregon City for breakfast."

  • "My friends & I have been here twice for our post run/ race refueling. The food is really good & there is something for everyone even if you have food restrictions. The first time I had the crab eggs benedict (which I still dream about) the second time the egg white omelet which was also great. Give it a try!"

  • "We had dinner here, and while OK, it was not memorable - I'm writing this review a few weeks later and while my "food memory" is usually quite good, it took me a while to remember this place. OK diner food - that's about what I recall. Not much else."

  • "I had a delicious chocolate peanut butter shake for lunch along with a appetizing salad. Monday is meatless Monday too. Great for vegetarians."

  • "We had a great experience, wonderful food and service. The manager Tim went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect for us, we will definitely be back!!"

  • "Very nice atmosphere, the idea of a dinerant is quite "original." The food was wonderful, reasonable wait time, not too long. The service was quite nice, pretty quick and didn't take very long for anything EXCEPT if you're seated in the very back of the restaurant section."

  • "I love coming here for lunch. The food is amazing, and the service is good. If you are on a tight lunch break, this place will accommodate."

  • "Big selection, great food and plenty of it. Fresh and well presented. Awesome Bloody Marys! We celebrated a birthday and Easter and had a wonderful time with attentive and efficient staff. Thanks!"

  • "We had reservations, but still had to wait about 10 minutes for a table. Not too bad. At least we weren't just wandering in off the street. That would have taken at least 30 minutes. The food was traditional diner with a modern twist. The brioche French Toast had a custard like texture and a sweetness that nearly needed no syrup. They were quite quick to fill your coffee and very attentive, But didn't come back to see if we needed anything until we were finished. Over all, a decent job on the service. The atmosphere is like a diner from the Jetson's; a bit future modern, a bit old fashioned. But the acoustics are like an indoor pool making it OK for a couple to speak but a bit difficult if you have more than four people."

  • "Service was extremely slow and forgetful. I've never had to wait so long for a drink order (that it turns out was never given to the bar). All we got was a "my bad" from our server. Really?"

  • "We visited here several years ago. We enjoyed great food, wonderful beer and really enjoyed the vibe. We return because of that first visit."

  • "This place is a great downtown location for a group lunch. The menu is diverse and the portions are generous! The upper level is great for lunch events too. The atmosphere is cool and hip."

  • "A group of 8 of us came to Portland for a girls weekend and we were staying at the Marriott where The Original was located, mostly for convenience to downtown areas and The Original, which seemed like a great way to start the night with some dinner and cocktails. Our server (didn't catch his name but he has shoulder length hair) was HILARIOUS and so nice, treated us great and recommended delicious drinks and food. Even dealt with our crazy crowd and took pictures for us. It was a great place and I'd recommend it for sure again!"

  • "The Original has a nice varied menu that is great for brunch on a weekend."

  • "This was a quick in and out brunch spot with hot coffee and spicy bloody marys. The mushroom and swiss omelet was great, stuffed full and the mushrooms were a nice mix of varieties, which is a welcome change over simple button mushrooms. The potatoes are shredded which is not always the easiest to find in Portland so that was appreciated. A side of bacon was generous and properly cooked. One friend had a side of fruit which was generous in portion and another the NW logger which was enough food for a logger, truly."

  • "Their fish special changes every day. I order almost every time I go there. The chef is a genius. The pan seared Steelhead over grilled vegetables is one of my favorites. I think their Chicken Cobb Salad is one the best in the city."

  • "Stopped in for breakfast. Had the Original Bloody Mary and Elvis sighting French toast. Great bloody Mary! Just the right amount of spice."

  • "Looked for a spot to take the kids before going to a show downtown. The Original was a great find for early dinner, especially because it was still Happy Hour. Kids had fun shakes and root beer floats. Had fun watching the MAX trains go by. Lots of slider choices - chicken, burgers, meatloaf and fries. Delicious salad and other offerings for the grown-ups. We enjoyed it."

  • "Short walk from the square. Ordered the fried chicken and greens, the order was huge! No room for dessert, will order entree accordingly next time. Very well-priced wine selection, the waiter was attentive and professional. Would recommend for an informal dinner made from quality ingredients."

  • "I had been here once before and was very impressed by their cocktails made with in house syrups. This time I was less impressed by the drinks, though still good there didn't seem to be that many unique ones on the menu. Dinner was over all pretty good. My lamb came out a little cold but was cooked perfectly and paired really well with its side dished. My boyfriend enjoyed his meal as well. We really like the chicken waffle sliders. They were the perfect size for the type of food they were and tasted great. Since the waffles were so good and our hotel was so close we went back for breakfast the next morning. Breakfast was very good, the sausage and bacon were moist and the poached eggs were cooked perfectly. Would go again."

  • "I am always impressed with the service at Original. People are pleasant and seem to be at your table when you want them to be. The food is always solid, particularly the salads. I know it is known for fried chicken & poutine (which remain my favorites), yet the salads and soups are large, well dressed and very tasty."

  • "Our amazing waiter was kind enough to let me try the gravy before I actually ordered it. I love southern food and am quite picky about gravy. The gravy at The Original is worth trying! Portions are well worth the money. A must if downtown for brunch."

  • "Decided to check out the Original for brunch and definitely enjoyed the food. Pricing is a bit of a hit or miss, get the breakfast burrito and you get more than what you paid for, get the french toast with crème brûlée and you will be searching for the rest of the order. Food was good, but not mind blowing. Atmosphere was very loud and made it difficult to have a conversation, so we rushed to finish so we could actually enjoy one another's company. Service seemed almost encouraged to rush customers, which is a big turnoff and when trying to flag down someone to ask where your side dishes that you ordered are, you have to stand or they wont see you while holding water pitchers lurking like vultures Not a bad 1st time, but improvement needed"

  • "I've now eaten here three times and the food is excellent, tasty & "original". The waitresses are super friendly and helpful. I loved the 60's/70's music....which gave it a old time diner feeling."
    Dined on 1/24/2014
  • "The fish special changes everyday. Mine was Seared Steelhead over roasted carrots with a Mushroom Fondue. It was fantastic. The chef is truly a genius coming up with his daily combinations. I hope they continue what they are doing."

  • "A -plus for originality in menu and decor where "traditional, friendly neighborhood diner" melds with hip, modern meeting place! The menu mixes old favorites with seasonal delights. The staff is attentive, the location is a less than 10 minute walk from downtown or The Pearl. Using Open Table for reservations makes it that much simpler."

  • "More diner then fine dining but really nice setting and awesome food choices"

  • "So I had very high hopes for this place when I chose it for my 21st birthday brunch location because I have heard many good things from people about it. Man were they wrong, at least on this occasion anyway. First off, the glass of the mimosa I order was sticky as if someone had spilled something all over it. Secondly, and most irritatingly, the crab eggs benedict that I ordered was COLD. Not just not warm, but cold! And the crab meat that was supposed to be fresh was wet and tasteless. Fortunately, the rest of my party enjoyed themselves, but I definitely will not be coming here again."
    Dined on 12/25/2013
  • "Eggs Benedict probably the best I've ever had. And their biscuits and gravy were like heaven. Service was great, the feel of the place was wonderful. Only things I didn't love were the hashbrowns and eggs. Both seemed very boring/plain. However, I'd guess that they just use super healthy non salted oils/butters to cook them in."

  • "The three of us ordered the pasta special, a turkey burger and the club sandwich. The club sandwich looked good and tasted great. As always, the fries are exceptional."
