Diner Reviews
  • "The service was awful, the food came out at a horrible pace. Service was very slow, yet there were dozens of wait staff darting about! Slow to ask for drinks, slow to get drinks…... One of us had her entree come out 10 minutes after two other diners had finished their food! Very loud too."

  • "The Ordinary is a very rare encounter with perfection. The product seafood was prepared perfectly. The pairing of tartare with fried oysters was genius. Unforgettable. The sauces ingenious. I will dream about this place."

  • "The Bar-b-que shrimp appetizer alone is worth another visit. All the food was delicious. Only minor complaint was that the server was not familiar with the wine list. Loved the dining room, especially how they placed the safe. This is a special place!"

  • "The atmosphere welcoming us into the Ordinary was a breath of fresh (cooler) air coming in from the sticky sidewalk. We started with a local brew and a yummy gin and grapefruit cocktail that were both wonderful, as well as the smoked oysters. I cannot say enough about the smoked oysters! Yes, the oyster sliders tasted great, along with my husband's great-value lobster dinner and my grilled swordfish, but those oysters with spiced saltines were the the main highlights of our meal. We also enjoyed the buttermilk panna cotta, along with a nice coastal wine selection. We will definitely be back the next time we are in Charleston!"

  • "took 1/2 hour to get 4 drinks & oysters at 9 pm. left & went to oak room to get meal after this experience. the food may be good, but not good enough to wait so long for dinner after appetizer experience"

  • "The Ordinary was quite ordinary. It is a very cool face, but our food had clearly been sitting for a while before it was brought to us and our waiter was almost nowhere to be found. I'm not sure the restaurant met the glowing reviews. Overall my dining party was quite disappointed."

  • "Great time at The Ordinary..fine company and good food. Hype of this Upper King establishment precedes the experience due to the love of FIG. Extra-long stairway to the tables upstairs is a runway for waitstaff constantly sprinting up and down. Vibe is upbeat and cool oyster bar chic, while fairly simple. Waiter was dramatically impressed with his position, as he partially, arrogantly described the menu. Northeast oysters were good but small.. all tasted the same, while touting distinctive differences. I had to ask many questions. Fish portions- smallest I've ever seen...and I understand gourmet. Fish chowder- excellent flavor. Crab app seasoning overpowered the crab. Parking-under the radar process. Good but overpriced even for Charleston."

  • "Very loud in the restaurant with no buffering on the tables and floors. We sat upstairs where noise might be amplified. The food was awesome and simply prepared. Service was there when needed and not too hurried. The server made good suggestions for our wine picks. Our parking ticket was validated, quite a nice touch."

  • "My wife and I were in town for our 1st Anniversary and we had a great meal. From the oyster sliders, crab Louis, pickled shrimp to the sea bass, grouper and finishing off with the rice pudding, everything was great. We hope to make it back here some day."

  • "The meal and service was excellent. The sea bass was enjoyed by all that ordered the dish. It was cooked correctly and the sauce matched perfectly. The waiter suggested a great wine to pair with our sea bass."

  • "I had the seafood platter. The food was very fresh and quite tasty. A little pricy but worth it"

  • "Ordinary had the best food I have eaten in the worst restaurant ever. The clams were fresh, the skate divine , the black bass heaven and the cobbler unbelievable, but the server was a space cadet. The voices and music noise reached such a crescendo that we were resorting to reading each others lips and there became a pressing need to leave it was so uncomfortable. The music was almost head banging and not compatible with food. 2 days later the experience was so exasperating that John actually didn't remember the extraordinary culinary delights we enjoyed there. Such a shame for the chef."

  • "This place is awesome! Good food, good wine and an excellent waitstaff! We'll go back and try to secure a seat at the very cool bar."

  • "I chose The Ordinary for my birthday dinner and I was not disappointed. We had oysters, shrimp, lobster, fish chowder, and grouper. Everything was fresh and delicious! Dinner ended with a panna cotta with blackberries that was very nice. Our server was attentive and I appreciate that they have redefined the space in this wonderful bank building as their restaurant. Definitely, this is on our list to revisit whenever we are in Charleston."

  • "Delicious food. Great raw bar. Nice price fixed menu: different choice each night of the week. Particularly convenient if you're staying at the Holiday Inn on Meeting st and Woolf."

  • "Restaurant location is a remoldeled bank. Beautiful inside and out. We were seated on a second level. Tables are well spaced. Service was excellent and attentive. Food was extraordinary. A definite must while in Charleston."

  • "I was so excited to eat here and it really did live up to all of the hype. All of the food our table ordered was awesome and our server(can't remember his name!) could not have been better. From start to finish it was the perfect dining experience."

  • "Terrific dining experience! The shellfish tower was delicious. Our fish chowder was scrumptious and flavorful. And, you cannot leave without sampling the okra and shrimp small plate. It's lightly prepared and served with a divine sweet and spicy sauce."

  • "The food here was amazing!! The oysters were very briny and perfect. We definitely got too much food...but still managed to eat almost all of it b/c it was SO delicious! Great spot!"

  • "Nice combination of many flavors. Very loud; not easy to talk and listen. Pricing on the high side but unusual dishes. Servers are very good."

  • "I've eaten there several times. Each time better than the last. Not sure how they do that. If your lucky enough to get a reservation, you won't be disappointed!"

  • "Seventh trip to The Ordinary this week for my wife and me, and we live three hours from Charleston. We have eaten at seafood restaurants all over the U.S. and not a one has been better than Mike and Adam's place. Theirs is just GREAT food, the finest, freshest seafood, simply but elegantly prepared. We could order only the clams mariniere with garlic toast and be happy all evening, but why stop there?"

  • "Few understand that seafood is the perfect food ... The more you do to it, the worse it gets. This place gets it. Flavors are subtly enhanced and the overall effect is sublime. Portions are small, cost appropriate. Wait staff is very well trained and effective. Servers are not. Noise level is high and energetic. Seating is uncomfortable. Clearly, the best seafood in town. Ambiance is suited for friend groups and casual occasions, but not for special occasions. We will return. You should go, appropriately the food is the star."

  • "I had read about The Ordinary in Bon Appetite and I was happy to be able to try it while I was in Charleston. This was my first visit to Charleston and there are many notable restaurants there. Everything about our evening was top notch. Our server was knowledgeable about the menu. She was a bit snobby but I think part of that is the Charleston way!"

  • "we were visiting Charleston and had enjoyed several very good restaurants when we finally made it to the Ordinary - obviously it is anything but ordinary. The food is excellent - fresh, beautifully prepared - everything just right from beginning to end. Our server was knowledgeable and attentive and willing to walk us through a menu that needs a little guidance the first time through. Highly recommended!"

  • "We settled in two stools at the oyster bar. We started with a dozen sampler, and then had another, moved on to some clams. caviar was over the top."

  • "The Ordinary was one of our stops on vacation from NYC. I only rate a restaurant on it's food merits, but with that said the atmosphere here is fantastic. We started oysters and the Jumbo Lumb Blue Crab Toast which we loved. It was the best display of crab on our vacation. Then we shared a breaded baked scallop special which was ok, probably just a bad choice for our palette. And finally we had Mahi Mahi in a light porcini cream sauce, it was fabulous."

  • "We had great service, but the hostesses would not accomodate our group at all for seating, so we had to get three tables. The hostess staff was also a bit rude. Not a great way to start your evening. The food was outstanding."

  • " As a restaurant professional, I typically don't write reviews or pay them much attention. However, 30 days later I can't stop thinking about my experience. The food was perfectly prepared, the atmosphere was awesome , and the menu was simply the perfect east coast seafood selection. Although all aspects of our meal that night were pretty darn good, it was the service that really stood out as exceptional, and as a restaurant manager I can be kinda critical. On the night we ate at Ordinary our service was the highlight and possibly the best I have ever had, the server was knowledable, engaging, and wait....had pesonality!! Stellar job y'all, seriously it was tight, can't wait to get back!!"

  • "The Ordinary is a perfect Charleston dining experience, fun, vibrant, elegant, upscale yet sophistically casual cold raw bar feel with amazing dishes at a really great value for this level of dining experience. "

  • "The service was exceptional. Very knowledgable of the menu. Some of the food was a bit too salty (even for seafood). Oysters are incredible. "

  • "Delicious and unique flavors. Everything is extremely fresh and perfectly seasoned. The descriptions on the menu don't do the food justice. I would highly recommend this as a new favorite. "
