Diner Reviews
  • "Everything we had was fantastic! Truly an exceptional meal. Highly recommend the fish pate and pickled veggies. Baked and raw oysters were delectable. Will return again and again. Order a basil vodka gimlet too!"

  • "We have been to The Ordinary numerous times, but this was one of the best. Jennifer was our server, and was by far, the most knowledgeable server I have ever had at any restaurant. And not only did she know her stuff, but she was passionate about it. We love The Ordinary and the food speaks for itself, but it's those little details that make it more than just a good meal. Can't wait until next time."

  • "Wow what a meal! Fantastic service and perfect lobster and oysters. They're trying a bit too hard with the Caesar salad and beer list...slightly more conventional wouldn't hurt. Definitely will go back"

  • "Great seafood, very good old world wine list (a huge plus), excellent service. Price at $3 per oyster over the top especially when they are not in season; otherwise prices compatible to the quality. Waaaaaay to noisy, but that's today's style to support the hearing impaired industry and destroy all conversation!!!"

  • "Great food and great service. Very professional staff."

  • "The Ordinary is located in a great space that combines modern design with the tradition of Charleston. The seafood & vegetables are local, fresh & prepared to enhance that freshness. The menu is simple with choices updated daily. The heirloom tomato salad was outstanding as were the grouper and lobster roll. The rice pudding with fresh peaches & blueberries sounds like a simple dessert but is so tasty. Service is top notch. The Ordinary is definitely worthy of of the accolades it has been receiving as one of Charleston's best new restaurants."

  • "Food was great, but required a lot of explanation from the server. If you don't ask questions you could miss a delicious dish!"

  • "Very small menu, but the food is wonderful! The service and atmosphere was perfect."

  • "Our family enjoyed dinner at The Ordinary for the first time on July 22, 2014. For adults, the food is exceptional. However, we did not find the restaurant to be kid friendly. After calling ahead prior to our reservations to inquire about a children's menu, we were told that they offered fried shrimp. Upon arrival at the restaurant, they said that was not an option. Our young son was highly disappointed and our evening was somewhat soured. One of the managers tried to make it right with some complimentary desserts, but it was amazing that they refused to make a young child a simple fried shrimp dinner. I enjoyed the smoked wahoo pâté-amazing flavor, an oyster slider and grilled swordfish. My wife enjoyed a nice steak. Overall, great food."

  • "Seafood tower was delicious. Fresh seafood that included lobster, shrimp, clams, oysters and a great crab salad. Definately would go back. My husband thought it was the best seafood he ever had. The appetizer was amazing as well. Crab, shrimp abd sausage spring roll. Amazing"

  • "I made this my last dinner in Charleston and was very pleased. The Seafood Platter was fresh and filling, the Grouper was delicately cooked, and the panache was my favorite dessert. It was promised to be "life changing" and lived up to that assessment. Our service was perfect along with the night."

  • "I've been wanting to go to The Ordinary for about a year now. Highly anticipated and had always heard good reviews. Service was great, wine was good, RICE PUDDING WAS FABULOUS but the rest of the meal left quite a bit to be desired. Buttermilk salad was SO SALTY it was hard to get through, fried seafood platter was good but nothing to write home about, and summer veggies were also super salty. All in all not what I was hoping for nor what I expected for a $50/person meal. With all the great places to go in Charleston, I'd suggest spending this kind of money elsewhere."

  • "We loved everything we ordered from the raw section of the menu and are sparkling rose was amazing. However, the dishes from the hot section were nothing special - clearly The Ordinary's specialty is what they do with shellfish. Service was perfect and the restaurant is beautiful."

  • "Very noisy! Terrific service. Lobster special (Friday) was excellent with one exception. Salad was very nice. Dessert, panna cotta, was superb. Oysters were very special. Great place for a special occasion."

  • "The noise level was too high and made conversation very difficult. Service was great, the waitress was friendly and knowledgeable. The food was good, but not as outstanding as we had expected from the reviews. Perhaps we'll try it again during oyster season."

  • "Would not recommend or return. Food was very poor on two different dinner occasions - the first one was bad, the second one worse (we hoped things would improve). Although the service is friendly, the atmosphere is average at best, with EXTREMELY loud background noise, blaring sound system music, and an Applebee's-like staff. We guess it's Ok for an after-work drink or a seafood snack, but we would not return for fine dining, or recommend as destination restaurant."

  • "Had not been to Charleston in a decade. Traveled all over the US / Caribbean/ Hawaii last 14 months. Been to many exceptional Restaurants. The Ordinary is the 1st truly world class meal I can ever remember . No other way to describe the food."

  • "The ordinary is anything but. We had simply a wonderful dining experience. From the drinks at the bar to the sublime meal we had it was a truly great gastronomic experience. The menu may make you think otherwise, but the actual food is extraordinary."

  • "One of the best meals I've had. Razor clams appetizer was expertly prepared"

  • "We loved eating at The Ordinary. The old bank building was a very interesting setting but the high ceilings and open plan made for a very noisy dining experience. We could hardly hear the specials! Our waitress was extremely well versed in the menu and made great recommendations for us. The oyster slider was not to be missed! The seafood tower was amazing with best oysters I've had in a lllooonnngggg time!"

  • "The seafood was perfect-there is no other way to describe it. It was truly like catching it yourself. and for the daughter that did not like seafood, steak and fries (not listed on the menu) was immediately offered by Salena. I also like that they accommodated us even thought I had mis-understood when the reservation was-I had it stuck in my mind that it was at 7 pm, not 6:15. Delightful and will go again soon."

  • "We had the prefixe dinner for Tuesday, NE fish chowder, Lobster Roll and fries, dessert. The lobster filling was full of very big pieces of lobster claws and can be In the traditional mayo dressing which my husband got or in a lemon butter dressing which I got. They were both delicious. The fries was regular but the ketchup is home made with some ginger spice (ok but I prefer reg ketchup) and a mayo type condiment. The STAR of the meal was the dessert, a pana cotta with blueberries and basil oil. The basil oil was just a hint and added a mystery. The pana cotta itself was sooo good, my husband who is not easily impressed was still talking about it . All these deliciousness for $35 for dinner! And they added a candle to celebrate an occasion."

  • "Great service, great service and great service. And really great food. The Tuesday Prix Fixe is a generous cup of clam chowder (more like a fish chowder, a warm lobster roll (or cold if you want, but why?) that is better than one in Maine and a panna cotta for dessert. For $35 it was a great bargain. Will make all of my visits to Charleston on Tuesday for this special."

  • "Another very delicious and enjoyable dinner. Everything is fresh and creatively prepared. The wait staff is helpful an friendly. Love being in the old well-adapted old bank."

  • "The service was awful, the food came out at a horrible pace. Service was very slow, yet there were dozens of wait staff darting about! Slow to ask for drinks, slow to get drinks…... One of us had her entree come out 10 minutes after two other diners had finished their food! Very loud too."

  • "The Ordinary is a very rare encounter with perfection. The product seafood was prepared perfectly. The pairing of tartare with fried oysters was genius. Unforgettable. The sauces ingenious. I will dream about this place."

  • "The Bar-b-que shrimp appetizer alone is worth another visit. All the food was delicious. Only minor complaint was that the server was not familiar with the wine list. Loved the dining room, especially how they placed the safe. This is a special place!"

  • "I enjoyed my dinner at The Ordinary, but wasn't blown away. Not sure what the hype is about. I've been to better raw bars. Love the location, great building. But I didn't experience anything so special as to justify all the fuss."

  • "took 1/2 hour to get 4 drinks & oysters at 9 pm. left & went to oak room to get meal after this experience. the food may be good, but not good enough to wait so long for dinner after appetizer experience"

  • "The Ordinary was quite ordinary. It is a very cool face, but our food had clearly been sitting for a while before it was brought to us and our waiter was almost nowhere to be found. I'm not sure the restaurant met the glowing reviews. Overall my dining party was quite disappointed."

  • "Our server was just awesome, she helped with the wine selection, she gave us half glasses to go with our own version of a tasting menu that my husband and I shared. Everything was perfect. From the raw to the cooked and everything in between, house made Fresno chili sauce a must. It is noisy, it was an old bank so the high ceilings carry the noise, but we were not bothered by it at all. We shared 7 courses and were completely stuffed. The portions are just right and the prices as well. We can't wait to go back!"

  • "Very loud in the restaurant with no buffering on the tables and floors. We sat upstairs where noise might be amplified. The food was awesome and simply prepared. Service was there when needed and not too hurried. The server made good suggestions for our wine picks. Our parking ticket was validated, quite a nice touch."

  • "Great time at The Ordinary..fine company and good food. Hype of this Upper King establishment precedes the experience due to the love of FIG. Extra-long stairway to the tables upstairs is a runway for waitstaff constantly sprinting up and down. Vibe is upbeat and cool oyster bar chic, while fairly simple. Waiter was dramatically impressed with his position, as he partially, arrogantly described the menu. Northeast oysters were good but small.. all tasted the same, while touting distinctive differences. I had to ask many questions. Fish portions- smallest I've ever seen...and I understand gourmet. Fish chowder- excellent flavor. Crab app seasoning overpowered the crab. Parking-under the radar process. Good but overpriced even for Charleston."

  • "Service was pretty cold until it came time to tip. Then he suddenly became friendly. Heirloom tomato with romesco verde, and razor clam ceviche appetizers were so good I now make them at home."

  • "My wife and I were in town for our 1st Anniversary and we had a great meal. From the oyster sliders, crab Louis, pickled shrimp to the sea bass, grouper and finishing off with the rice pudding, everything was great. We hope to make it back here some day."

  • "The meal and service was excellent. The sea bass was enjoyed by all that ordered the dish. It was cooked correctly and the sauce matched perfectly. The waiter suggested a great wine to pair with our sea bass."

  • "Ordinary had the best food I have eaten in the worst restaurant ever. The clams were fresh, the skate divine , the black bass heaven and the cobbler unbelievable, but the server was a space cadet. The voices and music noise reached such a crescendo that we were resorting to reading each others lips and there became a pressing need to leave it was so uncomfortable. The music was almost head banging and not compatible with food. 2 days later the experience was so exasperating that John actually didn't remember the extraordinary culinary delights we enjoyed there. Such a shame for the chef."
